CONDORS HITTING STRIDE DOWN STRETCH ryan Holt | bakersfield condors
Nowhere is that more evident than on the rotating cast of contributors on the Condors blue line this season. Veteran Jason Demers has been a steadying influence on a young group that has proven to be effective 5on5, contributed to a surging power play, and a backbone of the team’s penalty kill.
Every American Hockey League season has peaks and valleys. Some are more pronounced than others, but on the whole, you want to be hitting your peak around March and April as the intensity of the Calder Cup Playoffs chase heats up. Condors assistant coach, Keith McCambridge, knows that feeling all too well. As a former head coach in the AHL in St. John’s, Winnipeg, and most recently, Hartford, the veteran behind the bench has taken teams to the conference and Calder Cup Finals. “Every year in the AHL you lean on your veteran group early on in the season, because the guys coming out of college and junior need time adjusting to the pro game,” he said. “Then, the hope is, by the time you hit the second half of the year, the young guys have figured out the pro game and found ways to contribute to the team as a whole. When you look at our group, we seem to have that with the young guys pushing up the lineup and the veteran players leading the way.”
there. And we still celebrate Michael Kesselring, knowing that it’s nice to have played a small part on his development curve as he reached the NHL this year.” With chances more limited in the postseason and opportunities tightening, the Condors can be confident their group of d-men and goaltending can provide a chance to win each and every night.
“We have different ingredients back there,” McCambridge said. “Yanni Kaldis doesn’t get enough credit for his overall two-way game. Cam Dineen has come in and been hard to play against and elevated our power play. J-D has that experience that you can’t teach. Phil Kemp is the ultimate glue guy who does everything back
