It was a big end to the road trip for a quartet of Condors who all signed NHL contracts, keeping them in the organization. On Wednesday it was announced that d-man Dmitri Samorukov signed a oneyear contract extension. Also, d-man Vinny Desharnais and forward James Hamblin inked two-year NHL contracts, their first NHL contracts of their careers. On Thursday, veteran Seth Griffith signed on for two more years as well.

“I’m just so grateful for the people that have gotten me to this point and thankful,” Hamblin said. “I’ve had to earn everything and for guys like myself and Vinny who were roommates last year just trying to help the team, to sign the same day, is pretty special.”

Desharnais was drafted by the Oilers in the 7th round, but was on an AHL contract the last three seasons. After spending significant time in the ECHL and in and out of the Bakersfield lineup, he has become a dominating force on a surging Condors blue line. Organizationally, he has become of the poster boys for the team’s belief in “playing who’s playing well” and not necessarily just playing those on specific contract statuses.

The latter of the Wednesday three, Hamblin was undrafted when he signed a two-year AHL contract before the pandemic shortened 2020-21 season. He went on to lead all Condors rookies in goals with seven and celebrated his new NHL contract Wednesday with two goals to give him 14 this year.

FEATURE STORY Samorukov was in the final year of his entry level contract and made his NHL debut in St. Louis earlier in the year. His game has come on strong in the second half of this season after a myriad of injuries plagued his first half. Condors General Manager General Manager Keith Gretzky has been pleased with the growth of the agile d-man.

The 29-year old Griffith came to Condorstown last season, already one of the AHL’s most prolific scorers. He ranks second in scoring since 2013 and his two-year, two-way contract ensures the organization will have a proven voice in the dressing room to accompany a host of talented offensive prospects. It also shows the belief in the organization in the culture and foundation of the team’s success moving forward with proven quality veteran players leading the way.

“He’s taken huge strides. The biggest thing is he’s moving his feet. And when you move your feet, you’re not going to get yourself into trouble, you don’t box yourself in. Since Niemelainen and Broberg have gone up, he’s been a guy we’ve really counted on. I think he logs about 23, 24 minutes a game… With Dmitri I’m very happy. Not to knock him, he was struggling… but the last two months he’s been phenomenal and a real big part of our shutdown with Vinny Desharnais.”

CONDORS LEADERSHIP MATTHEW RILEY Team President Riley is responsible for the growth and development of KG (US) Oilers Corp. and the Bakersfield Condors, the organization he has guided since its inception in 1998. Riley serves on the AHL’s Board of Governors, and various league committees. He was previously the vice chairman for the ECHL Board of Governors, and served on the league’s Executive Committee.

He was instrumental in negotiations in the January 2014 purchase of the Condors by the Edmonton Oilers and the team’s elevation to the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2015-16. Now in their seventh AHL season, Riley joined the organization late in 1997, when they were known as the Bakersfield Fog, to execute the transition from the Bakersfield Convention Center to Bakersfield Centennial Garden (now known as Mechanics Bank Arena). With a new name and a new arena in 1998, the Condors were named the West Coast Hockey League Organization of the Year.

The Keokuk, Iowa, native previously served as the Executive Director of the Mobile (AL) BayBears Baseball Club, the classAA Southern League affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and was integral in the construction of Hank Aaron Stadium.

Riley is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University with a degree in communications.

He earned a master’s degree in sport management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama.

COLIN CHAULK interm Head coach Colin Chaulk was named interm head coach of the condors on february 11, 2022. Prior to being named as interm head coach Chaulk was named the condors assistant coach on September 3, 2021.

Chaulk, 44, was most recently in the American Hockey League (AHL) as an assistant coach with the Belleville Senators in 2019-20. Prior to that season, he was head coach of the Brampton Beast (2015-19), and an assistant coach with the Kalamazoo Wings (2013-15) and Fort Wayne Komets (2012-13).

The 2019-20 season for the Senators was their most successful in team history with a .643 points percentage and captured their first division title. Chaulk led the Beast to two playoff appearances including a 40-win season in 2016-17.

ANDERSON

Assistant coach

Anderson, 64, was head coach of the Chicago Wolves from 1997-2008 and in that time led the team to four league titles - two International Hockey League Turner Cups (1998, 2000) and two AHL Calder Cups (2002, 2008). He went to on to serve as head coach of the Atlanta Thrashers for two seasons and an assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes for two seasons, before returning to lead the Wolves in 2013 to capture another division title in 2013-14. His last coaching position was as an assistant with the Minnesota Wild from 2016-18.

Overall, Anderson ranks fifth in AHL history with 424 victories and is seventh with 788 games behind the bench over 10 seasons in the AHL as a head coach. In addition to the two Calder Cups, he also won three division titles, had seven 40-win campaigns, and four 100-point seasons in addition to coaching two AHL All-Star Classics. He was inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame in 2019.

As a player, Anderson spent 12 seasons in the NHL (1977-1989) with Toronto, Quebec, and Hartford.

RODRIGUE

Goaltending Coach

Sylvain Rodrigue began working on a full-time basis with Condors goaltenders in 2018-19, but has been with the Oilers organization for the past nine seasons.

In 2020-21 under his guidance, Stuart Skinner made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers and led the AHL in victories with 20.

He helped develop rookie goaltender Shane Starrett, who was named AHL Goaltender of the Month in February and received All-Rookie and Second All-Star Team selections from the AHL in 2018-19.

Rodrigue served as a Goaltending Consultant for the DEL’s Berlin Eisbären, a member of Germany’s top elite league and Fribourg Gotteron of the Swiss Elite League prior to joining the Oilers. He won the DEL championship with Berlin in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13. He was also a member of Berlin’s European trophy championship team in 2010-11.

Noah joined the Condors in February 2021 as the team’s video coordinator. In his role, the Los Gatos, California native will be responsible for video breakdown and analysis as well as team services including coordinating team travel.

Segall joined the Condors from the American Hockey League’s Charlotte Checkers where he served in a similar capacity during the 2019-20 season.

Colby Cave Memorial Fund The Cave Family and the Edmonton Oilers have created the Colby Cave Memorial Fund to carry on the memory and legacy of Oilers forward Colby Cave who passed away suddenly and tragically on April 11, 2020.

Proceeds from the fund will go toward community programs with an emphasis on mental health initiatives and providing access to sports for underprivileged children.

Cave made a lasting impact both on and off the ice with the Edmonton Oilers and the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, and before that with the Boston Bruins organization and the WHL's Swift Current Broncos. Cave was a consummate professional, well-respected by teammates and opponents alike. He was also a committed and positive member of the communities in which he played, eagerly volunteering for charitable initiatives and always stopping to say hi to fans.
