It feels good to be inside the friendly confines of Mechanics Bank Arena. After all, the Condors have not been able to say that much this season. In fact, the team has basically been on the road for the past 2.5 months.

Since November 17, the Condors have played just four games at home. Let that sink in. Four home games since Mid-November and the first Friday home game this weekend against Colorado … OF THE SEASON.

The road to get home for the Condors was not always freshly paved, but the team battled through to put themselves in a solid position in the Pacific Division to begin the month of February.

In fact, the team has lost just once in regulation over their last 15 games, a run which has seen the team vault from 9th in the Pacific to fourth since the team was swept in Colorado in Mid-December.

This weekend begins a big stretch for the team in Condorstown as they embark on a seven-game homestand, their longest of the season.

“We want to make this place a difficult place to play and we have,” Condors Head Coach Jay Woodcroft mentioned. “For visitors, we want them to know that when they come here they are going to be in for one.”

FEATURE STORY With the calendar flipping to 2022, the Condors play on the ice solidified buoyed by some key additions, solid goaltending, and depth scoring leading to one of the hottest runs in the AHL. January saw the team go 8-1-3, collecting 19 of a possible 23 points.

Colorado comes to town playing just as good as anyone in the AHL, with points in 13 straight. They’re led by a high-flying offense including Dylan Sikura who had a hat trick on Wednesday in San Diego.

“This a great group of guys and a pleasure to play with,” said first-round pick Dylan Holloway, who joined the team two weeks ago.

“It’s a fun group that cares about winning.”

So in a year where nothing has been guaranteed and where the Condors hit the midway point in February, the team looks to continue their strong January against a surging Eagles team, with a little retribution for December’s sweep on their minds.

Holloway has been an offensive spark for the Condors with five points in five games, including his first pro goal in Tucson last Friday. His addition gives the Condors the last two first-round picks from the Oilers on the roster as Philip Broberg is expected to return this weekend.

The mantra for the team all season has been whichever team got through the last couple months the best would be the teams playing meaningful games come April and May. Bakersfield’s run has given the team a foundation to make a push, in a place they haven’t been much this year --- at home!

CONDORS LEADERSHIP MATTHEW RILEY Team President Riley is responsible for the growth and development of KG (US) Oilers Corp. and the Bakersfield Condors, the organization he has guided since its inception in 1998. Riley serves on the AHL’s Board of Governors, and various league committees. He was previously the vice chairman for the ECHL Board of Governors, and served on the league’s Executive Committee.

He was instrumental in negotiations in the January 2014 purchase of the Condors by the Edmonton Oilers and the team’s elevation to the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2015-16. Now in their seventh AHL season, Riley joined the organization late in 1997, when they were known as the Bakersfield Fog, to execute the transition from the Bakersfield Convention Center to Bakersfield Centennial Garden (now known as Mechanics Bank Arena). With a new name and a new arena in 1998, the Condors were named the West Coast Hockey League Organization of the Year.

The Keokuk, Iowa, native previously served as the Executive Director of the Mobile (AL) BayBears Baseball Club, the classAA Southern League affiliate of the San Diego Padres, and was integral in the construction of Hank Aaron Stadium.

Riley is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University with a degree in communications.

He earned a master’s degree in sport management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama.

JAY WOODCROFT Head coach Led the Condors to their second Pacific Division title in three seasons in 2020-21 as the team went 24-14-1 in the regular season and won two playoff series en route to the division crown. Two Condors (Ryan McLeod, Stuart Skinner) made their NHL debuts, part of nine Condors who have made their NHL debuts in the past three seasons.

In his first season (2018-19) behind the bench in Bakersfield, Woodcroft led the team to its first-ever AHL Pacific Division title, regular season Western Conference title, AHL Calder Cup Playoffs berth, and Calder Cup Playoffs series victory. The team’s 42 wins were the most-ever for the Condors organization. During the season, the team won 17 consecutive games, all in regulation or overtime, tied for the second longest streak in AHL history.

Under his tutelage, five Condors made their NHL debuts with Edmonton in 2018-19 along with Tyler Benson (All-Rookie, Second All-Star) and Shane Starrett (All-Rookie, Second All-Star) receiving league accolades following the season.

Prior to joining the Condors, Woodcroft served as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers for three seasons and the San Jose Sharks for seven seasons.

He also spent three seasons as a member of the Detroit Red Wings coaching staff (2005-08), including their 2008 Stanley Cup Championship season.

Assistant coach

Dave Manson was announced as an assistant coach with the Condors on June 4, 2018.

Helped the Condors penalty kill to the top ranking in 2020-21 as the team captured their second division title in three seasons.

In his first season with the Condors, he helped develop the career of Caleb Jones, who played 17 games in Edmonton, including making his NHL debut. The Condors were also one of the top teams defensively in the AHL, ranking fourth in goals against per game at 2.68.

Manson worked with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2011-18 as both an assistant and associate coach. It was his second stint with the Raiders after being an assistant coach with the team from 2002-09. During his most recent time with the Raiders he helped develop first-round NHL selections C Leon Draisaitl (#3, EDM, 2014), D Josh Morrissey (#13, WPG, 2013), and C Mark McNeill (#18, CHI, 2011). In his first stint in Prince Albert, he helped develop first-round selection C Kyle Chipchura (#18, MTL, 2004).

CHAULK

Assistant coach

Colin Chaulk was named an assistant coach on September 3, 2021 and primarily works with the team’s forwards.

Chaulk, 44, was most recently in the American Hockey League (AHL) as an assistant coach with the Belleville Senators in 2019-20. Prior to that season, he was head coach of the Brampton Beast (2015-19), and an assistant coach with the Kalamazoo Wings (2013-15) and Fort Wayne Komets (2012-13).

The 2019-20 season for the Senators was their most successful in team history with a .643 points percentage and captured their first division title. Chaulk led the Beast to two playoff appearances including a 40-win season in 2016-17.

RODRIGUE

Goaltending Coach

Sylvain Rodrigue began working on a full-time basis with Condors goaltenders in 2018-19, but has been with the Oilers organization for the past nine seasons.

In 2020-21 under his guidance, Stuart Skinner made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers and led the AHL in victories with 20.

He helped develop rookie goaltender Shane Starrett, who was named AHL Goaltender of the Month in February and received All-Rookie and Second All-Star Team selections from the AHL in 2018-19.

Rodrigue served as a Goaltending Consultant for the DEL’s Berlin Eisbären, a member of Germany’s top elite league and Fribourg Gotteron of the Swiss Elite League prior to joining the Oilers. He won the DEL championship with Berlin in 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13. He was also a member of Berlin’s European trophy championship team in 2010-11.

Noah joined the Condors in February 2021 as the team’s video coordinator. In his role, the Los Gatos, California native will be responsible for video breakdown and analysis as well as team services including coordinating team travel.

Segall joined the Condors from the American Hockey League’s Charlotte Checkers where he served in a similar capacity during the 2019-20 season.

Colby Cave Memorial Fund The Cave Family and the Edmonton Oilers have created the Colby Cave Memorial Fund to carry on the memory and legacy of Oilers forward Colby Cave who passed away suddenly and tragically on April 11, 2020.

Proceeds from the fund will go toward community programs with an emphasis on mental health initiatives and providing access to sports for underprivileged children.

Cave made a lasting impact both on and off the ice with the Edmonton Oilers and the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, and before that with the Boston Bruins organization and the WHL's Swift Current Broncos. Cave was a consummate professional, well-respected by teammates and opponents alike. He was also a committed and positive member of the communities in which he played, eagerly volunteering for charitable initiatives and always stopping to say hi to fans.
