ood day to you my dears, Oscar Fingal O'Fiahertie Wills Wilde here with nothing to declare except my genius. Bosie and I have been perusing a rather fine publication known as Concrete and are particularly fond of this entertaining journal within . The Event is a most entertaining guide which any member of society should read, lest he should be outcast Heaven forbid. To be uninformed on the occasional gig is a folly but it is simply careless to be ignorant about the latest escapades on the Norwich circuit, truly the finest society outside London.

All musical tastes are catered for with the latest offerings reviewed by some delightful little children from primary schooL The moving pictures section reviews Smilla 's Feeling For Snow. In addition, and far more importantly, is mention of Wilde, a wonderful little piece about my good self. lt shows that there is one thing worse than being talked about and that is not being talked about in the Event.

Lovers of computer games will enjoy the Worms feature, Bosie hasn't stopped playing it all week. More information about the information superhighway can be found on the inter@ctive page, this week about looking for jobs - too hideous a notion for me to possibly contemplate. The arts pages provide essential insight into the latest books and plays, none of which are half as good as I could manage. Still, it is admirable that they make the effort.

This is a rather wonderful Event which I shall be sure to show to all my friends in London society.

erhaps ifs because it is November, or that it's really cold now, but there's plenty of stuff out there worthy of the attention of the Diner Toast award this fortnight The first candidate, and maybe the most obvious, is temperature and its nasty habit of dipping furiously at this time of year particularly at night. The whole ritual of going to sleep in a student house has now become something of a survival technique. Extremities are covered with layers of socks, gloves, hats, balaclavas whilst the rest of the body has to make do with the bewildering weight of every single article of clothing in your student wardrobe, constricting breathing and general movement, and just to put your ailing physical frame under more pressure you lie under two duvets, and three blankets. Once decked out for the night you lie motionless watching your breath condense above your head ignoring your buried bladder's cries for draining .... But if life at night weren't hard enough there's the toastworthy aspects of the day to bother about. You often find that there are not a lot of things available just when you need them: parking spaces; flapjacks; computers when everyone on campus is simultaneously trying to write essays (and the guy in front is editing a 20,000 word project). All these things are pretty good contenders for our diner toast award, but the winner this week has to be something that's always there when you DON'T need it. Red lights and traffic jams: a deadly combination. Imagine the scenario: you're having a quiet drive on a Sunday to find a nice pub tor lunch, it's sunny, the roads are clear, not a junction in sight. As soon as you slam down the accelerator, as it by magic a tractor appears in front of you. When you eventually get past the tractor you instantly run into 6 consecutive sets of red lights, and the ones you decide to jump always have a policeman cunningly tucked away behind them waiting to book you. Of course, once you've missed lunch and are driving home there's not another vehicle or obstacle in sight so to the dual winners of tractors and traffic lights, the toast's in the post.

Interviewing Monkey Mafia is an unnerving experience. lt takes place backstage at the Waterfront, where they're supporting Rani Size's Reprazent.

I'm here to ask questions, but the band are more interested in breakdancing, raiding Reprazent's booze stores, and cracking various jokes unsuitable for a family publication.

So Jon, was the Social a key influence on the musical landscape of nineties Britain?

"Naah! lt was more about a group of mates getting f** *ed out of our heads and playing records. This whole legend's grown up around it, but it was just a laugh really."

What's more, according to popular legend, Jon blagged a DJ slot after being discovered unconscious under someone's kitchen sink, something which he's unwilling to admit to now.

So what are Monkey Mafia all about?

The beats are large, but there's a lot more to them than just chemical copyists. Dub-heavy rhythms, fearsome ragga chatting, and the obligatory air-raid sirens. An album has been recorded, for release "sometime - God knows when!"

So what's it like? "lt's a great album. lt's the type of record that'll chat you up, take you home, shag you slily, and then get up in the morning to make you a cuppa.

You'll love it."

And with that, the band disappear in search of a quick burger or three, pausing only to purloin the last remnants of alcohol from Rani Size's dressing

Jon Carter, founding father of Big Beat, has gathered a new group together and is venturing forth once more. Stuart Dredge gets the low-down on Monkey Mafia ... ot too long ago, undoubtedly the coolest club in London was the Heavenly Social. Starting as a regular party held in the back of a pub, it mutated into the founding father of Big Beat. The DJs played whatever they wanted to, mixing up old-school hip-hop, eighties electro, blistering punk rock, and on one memorable occasion, The Birdie Song. In short, it rocked.

aithless are an organic hybrid of dance, hip hop and traditional songwriters who began working together in 1995. Rollo is a prolific DJ and producer who, as well as releasing his own material, has worked with U2, Bjork and The Pet Shop Boys.

Sister Bliss is from the same dance DJ I producer background, as is hip hop and forme r pi rate radio DJ Maxi Jazz.

His work led to prestigiou s stints working with Jamiroqua1 and Soul 11 Soul amongst others.

The final member of the group is Jamie Catto, former singer with The Big Truth Band and drummer for Gabrielle Roth .

A ''traditional" singer/songwriter who doesn't listen to club music, his involvement with the group is perhaps the most unusual, but one that provides depth and diversity to the Faithless sound.

With the huge international success of the first two singles Insomnia and Salve Mia, Faithless seemed to have set their stall out as a dance band of the usual (dare I say) Sash variety.

However Jamie states , "We're not a dance band , we've just had a lot of success with a couple of dance singles ... People were really convinced we were a dance outfit; it was a battle in the beginning to make them see otherwise but now with the success of the album people generally understand ."

Jam1e attributes the band's diversity to each member's different musical background and the way the group was formed, but also points out that the staleness of the cu rrent musical climate has led to exaggeration when describing their sound .

"I don't think it is as diverse as people say. If you took the house tracks away it's not that diverse ... it's a sign of the times that an album like ours (Reverence) is considered to be eclectic and diverse. it's not, it's just the music industry has made everything so homogenised."

The new single Don 't Leave is included on, and recently released to coincide with , the launch of the new Ewan MacGregor I Cameron Diaz film A Life Less Ordinary.

Made by the team that brought us Shallow Grave and Trainspotting the band are excited about their inclusion and the exposure it will bring.

Was it a mad scramble to get on with what will probably be another hugely successful soundtrack?

With summer festivals, studio time and another American tour already planned, the band's current schedule has them working non-stop until nex1 Christmas but Jamie is excited at the prospect of taking their music to new audiences.

"We're really hoping the [Japan] tour comes off, it's another world . Can you imagine just turning up with your guitar and playing? Brilliant!"

Never ones to rest on their laurels, there are many individual projects which are keeping the band busy.

Rollo is producing other artists , Sister Bliss DJing at club nights across the country and Jamie , under the title of Worlds Collide (with Duncan Bridgeman) has been commissioned to write the score and titles for the Columbia film Dan Eldman, the new project from the writer of Shme.

With a gold album , a host of international number one hits and sales in excess of three million already under their belt, th e future looks decidedly rosy for Faithless.

Plans for the fu ture are already underway, and there doesn't look to be any chance of the current success disappearing.

Their refreshing musical mix will undoubtedly continue to excite audiences across the world.

For a fresh young opinion on the pop world Paul Stokes spends some time in the school playground to find out what's hot and what's not. All is not well in the land of kiss-chase ••• n deepest, darkest Hampstead there are at this minute tribes of bohemians drinking frothy coffee, stroking their goatee beards and discussing music. The classics, "Oh, clearly Lennon is the post modernist antichrist; and today's hits, "The Spice Girls' existentalist persona is clearly represented in their single Spice Up Your Life." Confused? We were, so in search of a simpler, uncomplicated outlook on life, music and finger painting, The Event put on its indoor shoes, hung up its coat and went back to school.

The Event was accepted as honorary members of two classes of children aged nine and ten at South Harford Middle School. We played them records and they told us what they thought, non nonsense, no packdrill. Children today are not going to be fobbed off.

They know where it's at, and they know what they like. We started on safe ground with Oasis.

Everyone liked Do Yer Know What I Mean?, although there was a suggestion that the beginning was a bit scary.

Chumbawamba's summer hit Tubthumping is next on the curriculum. This was a clear favourite and had the children singing along. Next of the chart hits is the Verve's epic Bitter Sweet Symphony. The class seemed to like this one too, as it had a "peaceful" feel, although it took a while to get going. The last song on the hit list was Texas' smash Halo. This generated a mixed reaction, some of them liked the fact that it's nice and loud, others complained that it never fully got going, and one girl thought it sounded like her Mum singing and so was unimpressed. Finally we had to check their credentials before we let them lose on this week's releases and the all time classics: Spice Girls or Oasis. The classes firmly plumped for all things spice, and Emma "Baby Spice" was voted the most popular of the five (obviously she's the one

they can all relate to; Sporty Spice, poor girl, was described as a being "a bit yucky").

s everything seemed to be in order we moved on to this week's releases. If you turn over the page to Inspected you can find out what UEA's finest thought of this week's releases, while back in the classroom the children also put their young, critical ears to work to find out exactly what the students have been talking about. First up Teenage Fanclub's single Start Again.

The Teenies didn't fare too well ; it was too slow and uninspiring according to most of the class, though they thought it

could do with a second listen. Northern Uproar with their single Goodbye caused everyone to break into fits of laughter, "He sounds squeaky," exclaimed one boy "a bit like an old fogey!!"

Goodbye was to be honest quite dire, and the only positive thing anybody could say about it was, well it was so bad it made them laugh.

The next offering from this issue was Moby's LP I Like to Score and particularly the remix of the James Bond theme (for the soundtrack of the new film Tomorrow Never Dies). Bond proved to be very popular: several of the boys at the back were playing funky air guitar. "lt would be fun for parties," one girl suggested, though another girl was unconvinced, "I don't like it, it sounded like an alien!" she explained. "But aliens can't sing I" replied someone with an air of authority. When The Event inquired whether she had ever seen an alien, she thought for a minute

and replied, "Er. .. No." Still, with all the CIA, MI5, X-file cover ups the average alien probably can't find the time to practise.

So today's and tomorrow's hits threw up no problems for The Event's latest recruits, but how did they find the classics? Of the greats that we played them, the newest one was Panic by the Smiths which was released over ten years ago, before most of today's reviewers were even born .

the biggest band of all time. "My dad really likes the Beatles though," one girl offered by way of apology. The Smiths do relatively better under the microscope, their anthem Panic (hang the DJ, hang the DJ) was liked by half the class as they can "lose themselves in the music" whilst the others found it a bit on the dull side. Bob Dylan suffered from the worst critical beating. Like a Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited, despite the fact one

boy decided to conduct it from his seat, was universally slated. "He sounds like a dog, no no, he sounds my grandad singing in the bath," one boy shouted from the back. This caused the class to burst into laughter, and from then on Dylan was compared to almost everyone's elderly relations.

Clearly Bob Dylan should think about covering a few children's favourites in order to boost his standing in the pre-teen market, Dylan plays Mr Blobby's greatest hits?

Perhaps not.

So how did The Event do? Well we were OK on times tables, but hand writing will most definitely' have to improve.

Bob Marley, reggae king and Fugees sample material was first into the ring with No Woman No Cry. First blow, "it's a bit too slow," said a boy at the back of the class. "lt puts you to sleep; offered someone else and Marley was knocked to the canvas. The next contender was the Beatles.

After explaining the difference in spelling between the band and the insect variety With a Little Help From My Friends was released on the unsuspecting pre-teens. Ringo's singing came under some fire (I guess they would walk out on him for singing out of tune), and after a tense vote the class came down 16: 12, against (yes against)

Just remember: it's only music ...

Moby I Like to Score Moby's musical career has shown more directrons then a gyrating compass.

Few artist have worked with Heather Nova and the Butthole Surfers, have the chance of doing something with Gun's N Roses, and still hold the title of "Techno's First Star." it is therefore difficul t to know what to expect from a new Moby album. The wryly titled I Like to Score offers a compilation of film music old and new, illustrating Moby's diverse range of musical tastes and influences.

Not many record s can boast th e inclusion of house, trance and rock, but is that something to boast about? Brilliant, classic house is evident on Go, but we are faced with many unsatisfying tracks, with the mixing failing to improve. Th e taste is good but you're left craving a bigger, better bite.

Th is album may be good background or post club come-down music, but the individual tracks generally eith er propel you into musical heaven, or drag you into a bog of monotony.

Th e emotive cover of New Dawn Fades shows that this album has more than just specialist appeal ,but at times it has th e feel of free sampler disc to it.

Such an electric album is refreshing to find , bL t you 'll have to endure some near misses before getting to Moby's sweetest goals.

The Cure Galore: The Singles

For Britpop dinosaurs like Echobelly the problem is a simple one: adapt or die.

Faced with younger, more complex species, some of the old guard have wrestled heroically with their musical direction to drag themselves into 1997.

Sadly, Echobelly have chosen to hide their inadequacies behind cumbersome string arrangements and odd chord changes.

Intended to sound epic, these only succeed in weighing down this normally upbeat band throughout lumbering Lustra.

Far from three minute pop gems like King of the Kerb, these offerings seem like ideas that don't belong to the same song, carelessly bolted together over flacc1d beats and topped off w1th some vocal gymnastics.

Even Sonya Madan's lyrics have progressed from sharp observation to introspective pop star rambl ings about boys and drugs. Everyone Knows Better sounds like The Eagles, and Paradise manages to lose the plot in two and a half minutes. it's a great shame for a band who used to want to do great things, which is only emphasized by the one or two half-decent offerings to be found on this album.

A band who have half a brain and can still play guitar? Surely not 1 Indeed, but then the only predictable thmg about this band is they continue to make bloody good records. Northern Uproar Goodbye Goodbye IS pretty terrible, although it probably represents a career high for Northern Uproar. If a combination of caveman vocals and cheesy hom solos warm your cockles then it's passable. If not. and you want a hint of intelligence and feeling in your ballads then you can kiss Goodbye goodbye.

Unfortunately i1. fails to live up to any expectations you may have.The various mixes on the CD are rem1n1scent of many things including the Kinks. nage Fanclub Galore: everything you ever wanted and more from The Cure .

Class1c hits like Friday I'm in Love and Close to Me are just two of the great singles on th is album that The Cure have released in the last decade.

We're also given a taste of what's to come: Wrong Number is their latest offering and if it is indicative of the new album , which should be released some time in 1998, then Cure fans are in for a treat.

Although thiS IS a great album and will be loved by hard core fans and Cure virgins alike, some may feel that there are some great album tracks, like In-between Days, that have been overlooked.

If you 're in need of a quick fix of th e Cure before the next album , then Galore does the trick, but remember there's no need to buy if it you have Debbi Marco already got all the singles.

8 Heads In a Duffel Bag Released November 28 Joe Pesci stars as an ItalianAmerican gangster (no typecasting then) who has to deliver a very unusual package to his superiors. And it's a comedy.

Alien: Resurrection Released November 28 Sigoumey Weaver does the monster mash in another movie with the acid-veined thing from space.

Also starring Winona Ryder and a load of extras.

Nothing to Lose Released November 21 nm Robbins (Shawshank Redemption) and Martin Lawrence (of Bad Boys fame) become unlikely partners in this road comedy. No doubt they'll be friends at the end of it all.

his film has to live up to a lot of expectations. Oscar Wilde was one the greatest wits of his time, and Stephen Fry is one of the greatest of ours, so as an audience, we're expecting a witty plot. Wilde is also one of the English language's finest writers, so you might think the film would recognise that fact. Secondly, as the first film of Oscar Wilde's life since the prudish 50s (when to show two men holding hands was considered immoral), you may expect this film to be sexually liberated. Wilde does nc.t really

meet these expectations - except on the sex front where there's precious little else for the first 20 minutes.

And Wit, though creating a few comic moments, only makes a cameo appearance, leaving you wondering what is was Wilde actually did, as his writings make fleeting visits to the story.

Nonetheless we do see how Wilde is consumed and ultimately destroyed by his passion: Lord Bosie Douglas. Bosie, excellently portrayed by Jude Law, is a character who one minute you pity due to his violent father and family disasters, and

the next you want to poke in the eye.

He is a selfish, self-centred individual who is unworthy of Wilde's attention and affection. Fry portrays Wilde as a vulnerable, tender man who never intended to hurt anyone, but due to his own failings ends up harming many.

This is a sad, moving film of one man's fall from grace. it's just a shame that Wilde's wit was not given greater exposure, as this would have firmly propelled it from the world of BBC costume drama into that of a film classic.

Excess Baggage Released November 28 Alicia Silverstone arranges for herself to be kidnapped and held to ransom in order to get more attention from her father Christopher Walken. The things people do, eh?

vin Smith's third movie represents his most mature effort to date, and something f a return to grace after Mal/rats.

Ben Affleck plays a hapless comic book writer who comes to leam that the woman he loves is a lesbian, in a movie that explores in a funny, profound way our perception of ourselves as sexual beings.

Smith's true gift is for dialogue, so it's good to see him doing what he does best: creating scenes for people he is familiar with. You'll recognise both faces from and references to Clerks and Mal/rats.

Much of the movie is funny, but most impressive are the a{fecting performances of the two leads, who avoid descending into cliche.

In fact, at the risk of sounding like every other critic on the planet, this is a romantic comedy for those of you who don't usually like that sort of thing.

Writer I director Smith's subject matter is realistic because he writes about what he knows, which is New Jersey. He could have set it in New York, but the point of the story would be lost. How Ben Affleck's comic book writer comes to terms with the object of his desire is not the reaction of a New Yorker but that of a suburban New Jerseyite.

Any Sleepless in Seatt/e-esque scene at the top of the Empire State Building would be out of place here; Smith instead leaves us with that rarest of things, a thought-provoking romance.

Isn't that what we all need?

Reason why? Arrives on the doorstep of a wealthy and sophisticated New York couple claimi ng to have been mugged , and con vinces them that he is a friend of their children , and the son of Sydney Poitier.

Consequences! Manages to dupe his way into various wealthy homes, where he eats their food and sleeps in their beds.

Success? 7/10. The titl e of the film traces the belief that anybody can form a connection by friendship or acquaintance to any other person , involving no more than six intermediary links . Everyone is thus joined by a maximum of six degrees of separation to everyone else . Fasci nating.

n the world of books and film, 50s 1..os Angeles is only ever portrayed as a hotbed of sin and vice. At first glance, LA Confidentials story of porn, hookers, sleazy journalists and bent cops seems to be nothing out of the ordinary, so it's a surprise that this is a film without a dull moment. In fact it's chock-a-block with thrills. The cast is perhaps one of the most peculiar ever assembled.

Kevin Spacey (Seven, The Usual Suspects) acts alongside Danny DeVito, Guy Pearce (Priscilla: Queen of the Desert) and James Cromwell (Farmer Hoggett in Babe). That such an ensemble comes across as actually believable is a testament to a fantastically acted and directed film .

Ed Exley (Guy Pearce) is the son of an LA cop who died on duty, and Junior's career is rocketing ahead. The only problem is, he's got morals, and therefore considers that a bunch of colleagues duffing up a bunch of Mexicans in the police cells isn't really acceptable.The press agree with him

and Exley gets a promotion for snitching on his workmates.

Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) is the ultimate celebrity cop, a consultant on a telly show, and appears in journalist Danny DeVito's scandal rag Hush-Hush when the two fit up unsuspecting crooks. A shooting in an all-night cafe throws Spacey, Pearce and colleague, Russell Crowe, all around the weird and twisted elements of Los Angeles (the feelgood factor barely gets a look in), as they slowly work out just what the hell is going on.

Though cop films are two a penny and this particular genre is expected to be contrived and dense. The film never falls into cliche, largely thanks to its leading actors.

The most amazing performances come from the Australian, Russell Crowe, as the ever-so-slightly naive young gun, and from James Cromwell as the Irish police chief. As for Kevin Spacey, he's the slightly disreputable charmer we've all come to expect. Refusing to simplify James Ellroy's original novel, the bleak plot doesn't wallow in misery like !he recent Nil By Mouth, but positively relishes character and situation. If you fancy something that ain't crash-boom-bang, you can't do much John Spacey better than this.

Still think computer games are for socially inadequate people with no matest Worms 2 is the game that'll change your mind. Bungeeeeeel t's fair to say that there hasn't been much copy. Back in 1995, Worms rivalled the LCR In room for worms In the history of computer causing bleary-eyed students, missed essay games, compared to other animals. After deadlines, and even mass brawls on a feY11 notable all, we've had turbo-charged hedgehogs, occasions in Waveney Terrace.

Over the last couple of years, various updates suicidal lemmings, road-crossing frogs, and even the odd ninja turtle, all clamouring for have been produced, adding extra options. the attention on console and computer alike. But not facility to play over a network, and suchlike. many worms. Of course there was Earthworm However, the core gameplay remained Jim a couple of years ago, but he wasn't much fundamentally the same, eventually meani1g that hardened wormers just got too good at it. Games cop. Not only did he need the protection of a spacesuit, but he also ruined his computer cred could (and sometimes did) go on for days, with wily pros standing each other off with their by appearing in a terrible eponymous cartoon show. Any others? Well, not that spring to mind, complex tactics. Garners wanted a new challenge, although there was once a game based around so Team17 decided to give it to them by producing the animated series Trapdoor, in which one of an official sequel. Okay, so the fact that they knew the tasks involved finding some squiggly things they could make potloads of cash probably had something to do with it too, but nevertheless, the to feed 'im upstairs. But I digress...

Back in the early nineties, a young man by the last year has been spent producing a sequel name of Andy Davidson decided that the lack of (called, surprisingly, Worms 2) that would have invertebrates in electronic entertainment had to something new for previous fans, yet would also be rectified. He designed a game for the Amiga attract those who hadn't yet fallen under its spell. (remember that kids?) which would feature Well, that sequel is now ready to be unleashed on the world, firstly on the PC but soon after on the worms in an orgy of violence and destruction.

Why? No-one's sure, but chances are it was major consoles too. In anticipation of the student demand for Worms 2, we managed to down to an unpleasant childhood experience.

Anyway, he took his idea along to a .........11!~·-.. blag a copy early, just so we software publishers conference, and could tell you all about it. The convinced a company called worms are back, and with Team17 to develop the idea and the game comirg out next week you'd better produce a fully fledged game.

That game, entitled simply get your coursawork Worms, came out in 1995 initially out of the way pretty sharpishl on the Am/ga and PC formats.

Its combination of gleeful violence and fiendish strategy won it critical praise, but In the months following its release it acquired an increasingly large cult following amongst gamesplayers all over the world. The reason was its multiplayer capability.

Now, with .-""!::........_ beefed up graphics all round, Worms and jump (the spacebar) 21ooks gorgeous yet hasn't to get into position for sacrificed any of the gameplay. I'll that perfect shot. You put my neck on the line here, and say that this is weapons by calling small icon bar, before one of those rarest things: a game that makes and firing using the you laugh out loud at regular intervals. it's the little touches that do it - for example each weapon has keyboard. Not that all you can do is attack - these worms its own animation. When you select the baseball bat weapon, your worm slips on a backwards are veritable action worms, baseball cap to go with it. Well, I guess you able to swing on ropes, bungee jump off cliff edges, ---... had to be there... and even teleport around the Ifs the multiplayer aspect screen! that is going to make

Worms 2 such a huge smash though. With six players playing at once it's a riot, often literally when you push off a cliff your mate's worm that he's named after his girlfriend. Of course, his girlfriend may be actually playing too, and kicking his arse most likely, as this is one game suited to both sexes.

The strategic aspects and wicked humour mean that Worms 2 1acks the testosterone overload that blights too many games. As with Worms, if you buy this game news will spread like wildfire ...._ around the University, resulting in complete strangers turning up at your door in the early hours on the off-chance that you might fancy a game. The difference is that now, with six players, you can make even more new friends! Of course, if you're rich enough to have your own interne! connection at home, you can hook up with opponents all around the world.

The game's easy to get into, and looks like having a phenomenal litespan once you start developing your own cunning tactics. it's rumoured that you can even start designing your own weapons, although it wasn't possible on the version we played. Be warned, buying Worms 2 may pose serious questions on your commitment to your studies, such is its addictiveness. A good or bad point? That's for you to decide, but don't blame me when your lecturer won't accept that assignment two weeks late!

Are there bad points? Well, it's hard to say, seeing as the version we played wasn't completely final. We didn't get to play the one-player version, which Team17 claim has

been significantly improved.

Then again, you shouldn't really be playing this on your own, unless it's to brush up on devious tactics to annihilate your mates later on! The weapon firing system is a little cumbersome at first, meaning that your grenades will probably be landing several miles wide until you get the hang of it.

Sometimes the background can look a little cluttered, making it hard to see exactly where you are and where you can go. All of these are minor niggles really - I honestly can't find any glaring cock-ups in the game at all!

Basically, in plain language, Worms 2 rocks. On a scale of nought to Guns 'n' Roses, it kicks Axl Rose's butt from here to California!

he funniest thing about Rowan Atkinson is that he's so ugly. His rotund face and plasticine expressions provide him with an immediate headstart over most of his contemporaries he can carry off scenes that in a lesser comedian's hands would inspire ridicule.

Visual humour is not an easy technique to perfect.

Effective emotional expression must sit alongside a genuinely funny situation. With Mr Bean, Atkinson has created a character who has almost become a national celebrity.

The first complete episode, The Return of Mr Bean, emphasises Atkinson's comic genius.

Incorporating the classic restaurant scene in which he employs his "I'm driving" catchphrase, the episode highlights the strengths of the Mr Bean concept. Incidental characters exist as mere props for the absurdly improbable situations Bean manages to find himself in. Interestingly though, the humour is less successful when there is greater involvement of other characters.

In Bean Goes To Town, his face twists and creases throughout to make scenarios all the more hilarious.

But some unimaginative material occasionally proves that not even Atkinson can save the horribly slack set-pieces that litter the weak Mr Bean in Room 426. There are signs that the writing team - one of whom is Atkinson - are running out of ideas as scenes plod along and begin to sink into cringe-inducing, laborious wit. If Room 426 is the shape of things to come, perhaps it may be time to call it all a day.

hough £//en has not had the commercial success of Friends, or for that matter received as much critical acclaim as Frasier, it had found its niche as a reliable primetime comedy. However, moving into the fourth series this was all to change and from a formulaic start one of the boldest plotlines ever used in an American show emerged. After rumours and gossip fuelled by the press Ell en De Generes 'came ouf, a move echoed by her character Ellen Morgan.

Having a primetime lesbian star was an monumental step for gay rights.

De Generes' increased influence on the content of the show made a storyline possible that most TV executives would have run a mile from .

The plot developed using a sequence of hints throughout the series: lines such as "Oh, I was just in the closetl" were written into the script. All of this was building up to the Innocuously entitled, "Puppy Episode".

The episode was an hour long, special guest eXtravaganza. Making a statement was definitely top of the agenda and each situation was confronted head on. When Ellen meets a gay

woman (played by Laura Dem) she is confused by the obvious attraction she feels.

Ellen is forced to come to terms with an issue she has been since infant school.

Winfrey plays Ellen's therapist, and helps her interprei a very surreal dream sequence involving Cindy Crawford, Demi Moore, a supermarket with lesbian discounts. This is followed by a trip to a coffee house to meet kd fang, where Audrey asks, · so what do lesbians drink?" Kd fang's reply is "Iced Tea"l Taking such a bold stance thrust the show into the spotlight. The show avoids the 'all is well with the world now' cliches that Ellen has come out.

Encountering prejudice is Inevitable and especially hard when Ellen's parents and her best friend Paige find themselves unable to deal with the situation. But remember, this is Hollywood and a crisis can't really last more than two episodes.

Nevertheless, the show does well to avoid painting an idyllic picture. This emerges as one of the strongest comedies of the moment, witty, wellscripted and with some perceptive commentary.

This show makes you laugh and think In equal proportion, and proves itself as essential viewing.

ou don't often find a film that captures your attention from start to finish. The Shawshank Redemption is a rare example of this type of high quality film. Nominated for seven Academy Awards back in 1995, it failed to win anything, for reasons known only to the Oscar panel. The film is an extraordinary tale of hope, friendship and survival inside a maximum security prison. With its gripping characterisation and an excellent overview of several decades, the audience is drawn in from the very first minute.

Tim Robbins plays city banker Andy Dufrense,

depicts Ancly's life in the ..,.,... confines of the state prison, and as his friendship with Red grows, so does his popularity with the warden and prison guards.

Dufrense uses his banking experience to help the corrupt officials amass personal fortunes.

But, as always, life does not stay sweet, and in a final twist Andy finds that he has two choices, to "get busy living or get busy dying."

This Impressive and dramatic film is a testament to what can be accomplished when Hollywood use their mass of talent to make a cracking film instead of their usual beat 'em ups or saccharine sweet sentimental tales.

When the judge of Louise Woodward's trial decided to reveal his verdict online, many were outraged. Stuart Dredge wonders why.

n Monday, the judge in the Louise Woodward murder trial was due to make his decision known as to whether he would overrule the jury's verdict. So, while at the time Concrete went to press the situation was still hanging in the balance, by the time you read this the world will know whether the British teenager is to spend the next fifteen years behind bars.

Whatever Judge Hiller Zobel decides, the case will go down in legal history as the first ever in which the judge's decision was initially revea led on the Internet. Judge Zobel announced his intention to do this last Monday, provoking tabloid outrage both here and in Am erica, as well as attracting accusations of callousness, and unprofessional cond uct. The Sun labelled him an 'lnternut' who was ducking out of his responsibilities, and found a legal expert who described the decision as "beyond extraordinary and into the realms of the bizarre."

So what was he th inking of? Am idst the media storm, it was difficult to get a full picture of what had actually been decided , so the facts are these: Judge Zobel announced to the court that he would first publish his verdict on the we b pages of an American legal journal called Lawyers Weekly.

Naturally, by the next day so many Internet users had tried to log on to the site that it crashed, and wouldn't let anyone on! Therefore , cou rt official s decided to distribute the decision to 11 other web

sites, including those operated by th e Boston Globe newspaper, the major television networks, and the Press Association of Great Britain . Although there was speculation that the decision would come last Wednesday, most observers expected it to come this Monday.

So why take this apparently eccentric decision? Ordinarily, Judge Zobel would file his decision on paper with the clerk at the Massachusetts courthouse, after which it would then be copied fo r waiting journalists.

However, the intense interest in Louise's case world-wide means that there are just too many reporters for the small courthouse to deal with, meaning that releasing the verdict under normal means would at best be chaotic, and at worst a complete travesty. The judge also hinted that he believed releasing the decision onto the Internet would make it immediately available for anyone who was interested.

Publishing such decisions on the 'net is not unusual, despite the tabloids' claims to the contrary. The Lawyers Weekly site has been carrying reports such as this for years. However, they have usually not been posted on the Web until a few weeks after the event, to be consulted by lawyers, other judges and students. Although

some other courts have their own websites that publish transcripts of old rulings , the move to publish online first is completely unprecedented.

So, good or bad idea? Well, publishing the transcript of Judge Zobel 's decision in full on the 'net will undoubtedly be a good thing for anyone who wishes to read it themselves.

American institutions don't have the best record for openness, so moves such as this can only be applauded. Also, particularly in the legal profession, in which so much importance is placed upon its system of precedence, it is invaluable for lawyers all over the world to be able to consult and refer to decisions taken thousands of miles away at the click of a button.

However, Judge Zobel will probably be disappointed in his intention to make the decision public more quickly. After all, the verdict could come at any time in the next three weeks, so unless we stay logged on to the relevant sites 24 hours a day, we'll be extremely lucky if we read the decision as soon as it's posted. Within minutes, it'll be all over radio stations and television broadcasts worldwide, not noticeably faster than if he'd followed the more traditiona l methods. Don't forget either that if he decides to overrule the jury, then Louise Woodward will be summoned to the court to learn her fate in person. She won't have to get online to find out what's been decided, which is probab ly just as well considering the lack of Internet facilities in American jails.

f you're in the second year, at some point this year you'll hear from the Careers Centre urging you to start thinking about life after UEA. Your first reaction will probably be to throw it in the bin. But maybe you shouldn't - hundreds of worried third-years are spending their time wishing

they hadn't. Life may seem sweet now, but as you progress through university, the question of what to do when you get out will become more important.

So why the sermon? Well, whether you're a finalyear student tearing your hair out because you

haven't started looking yet, or just someone who'd like to start, the Internet could help you. As well as an increasing number of Internet sites that are devoted to matching graduates to jobs, there's an event that could very well answer many of your questions on the subject.

Its a 'virtual careers fair' , which is taking place on Wednesday November 26. It'll allow you to chat to various industry bigwigs and ask their advice online, as well as get information on how to prepare for interviews. What happens is that loads of recruiters get together in a cyber-cafe in London , and you log-on to ask them questions.

Sounds useful? You may even be able to blag a job, which someone did last year.

The fair starts at 10.30am, and lasts till 4pm. All you need to do is log on to the Gradunet website at www.gradunet.co.uk. The Gradunet site is one of the main job sites on the net, with details of vacancies and graduate training schemes. You can register now at the site, which will mean you'll be sent information on the companies that are taking part beforehand.

irst things first- as I write this column, I'm assuming that Judge Zobel's verdict will have been published by the time you read this. The now infamous Lawyers Weekly site (www.lawyersweekly.com) will have the full transcript of his decision, assuming that you can log on that is!

There are reputedly over 160 sites offering information and opinion on the case, so I can only pick out a few of them. Town Onllne (www.townonllne.com) will also carry the transcript, but as well as that has pages of coverage, features and background information. Last week it hosted an online interview with Middlesex County D.A. Tom Reilly, discussing the case.

Other news organisations that are covering the case are: the BBC (www.news.bbc.co.uk}.

CNN (www.cnn.com) and Sky News (www.sky.eo.uk/louise). The BBC site is going to be one of the first sites to get the verdict.

There are already lots of sites that have been set up to support Louise, including the official Campaign for Justice at www.louisewoodward.com. This was set up from her home village of Elton, and has already been visited more than 50,000 times.

You can sign an email petition, get the tax address of Judge Zobel to protest, or even send an email to Louise in prison (they'll get printed out and delivered to her). The other main support site is located in Boston, at www.masscomm.net/nanny.

As yet, there aren't any antiLouise pages, although I'm sure they will spring up gradually.

However. such is the overwhelming feeling of support both here and in America, they probably won 't attract many surfers.

TAKE THE GARY RHODES THEATRE ROYAL

he Rhodes on the Road tour rolled into the Norwich Theatre Royal , ready to entertain an audience of wannabe television chefs. The undoubted star of television cookery took to the stage in his standard costume of chessboard trousers, Bart Simpson hair and souffle personality. His aim was, it seems, to enthuse a purple-rinsed and aged audience with five simple but attractive dishes.

He succeeded with this to a point, but at times his natural charisma and motormouth obscured the food . This was more than a little ironic considering how he constantly reminded us that the food was of paramount importance.

On to the food in question. He cooked Pea and Scallop Paella Risotto, Reinvented Irish stew with Loin of Lamb, Open Steamed Salmon with Stirfried Thai Salad, Caramelised Plum Pizza (fruit tart) and Chargrilled Vegetables with two dressings.

The dishes were put together with style and panache and served up with some amusing anecdotes from his new television series.

Rhodes' plum tart and grilled (burnt) vegetables lacked a certain individuality though, even for the

dribbling and none too choosy students among the audience. Compared to this his first dish now seemed innovative in the extreme. Rhodes had served us up a concoction which was, unusually, both a risotto and a paella. And although he did make an attempt to justify this paradox we were still left none the wiser as to his aims.

Despite the somewhat flat reception to some of his food , Rhodes did made a concerted effort to involve the audience in his show and this was an overall success. it resulted in several humorous moments, notably when a leggy young blonde questioned him regarding a good stuffing. lt has been written in the press recently that cookery is the new rock and roll and the chefs are its stars. Unfortunately for us Rhodes took this to heart as we were subjected to his renditions of Love me Tender, I Love You Love and Leader of the Pack in his cheesy crooning style. Ultimately though his attempts to make these classic songs his own failed to hide the fact that much of his food had not been fantastically received by the audience called up to give their opinion. Sadly, Gary Rhodes was not hot enough to be fondue .

sauces were quite appetising, but the meal suffered because of the fact that there was not nearly enough of either of these two sauces.

Instead, there was a much larger proportion of pasta, which smothered a lot of the flavour. Once again, the overriding problem with this meal was the fact that it was not very big and left wanting more.

CO-OP LASAGNE 99P On the whole, I was very disappointed with this meal. On first appearance, it looked very small and not at all appetising. After trying a piece, my suspicions were confirmed. it tasted very bland, and there was very little to recommend it. The meat was in short supply, and the dish consisted mainly of pasta and what was supposed to be cheese sauce. The meal was practically finished after a few mouthfuls, but it didn't leave me wanting more.

ICELAND TAGLIATELLE 99P This meal was one of the best that I tried. lt involved a different manner of preparation than the other four meals. Instead of being heated in a small plastic pot, the pasta and sauce were heated separately in plastic bags and then combined on the plate. Both the pasta and the sauce were very tasty, although there was not a great deal of meat in the sauce.

This was also the largest meal that I tried, and was the only one that really filled me up.

removing this from e microwave, I was not at all impressed. lt ~-""""resembled a large brown "" ""' "'" mess and did not look at all appetising. I pressed on and discovered that it didn't taste at all bad.

The potatoes were a bit dry, and the meat was rather fatty but it was rather tasty. The sauce that the meat was in was also quite flavoursome, although it was a bit too thick. However, this dish was again let down by the fact that it was too small. As this was the most expensive meal, one ~~~~~路 would expect a little more for your money.

Of all these meals, I would recommend the Iceland Tagliatelle: it was certainly the largest of the five varieties and one of the tastiest and cheapest. Though the others tasted quite nice, they were all too small to really qualify as meals in Dsve Roberts their own right.

GREG PROOPS THEATRE ROYAL

enowned for his crude and offensive witticisms and made notorious for a recent deportation , we were expecting big things from the controversial Greg Proops. Unfortuanately, he opened his show with predictable and worn out jokes which really struggled to squeeze a laugh from a non-plussed audience. Luckily for us he swiftly moved on from mocking Norwich's cou ntrified position and filled the next hour with some hilariously perceptive remarks on the cultural divide between the Americans and the English. He glided with ease through a vast amount of material, from America's love of the shallow and superficial to the unashamed drinking habits of the English. Proops scored points with the audience with his references to projectile vomiting and illegal drinking, given all the 'embryos in wonder-bras' now dominating the Saturday night pub scene. He used stereotypes very well, and his cynical (though possibly all too true) representation of the English with the all too familiar quote - "I'm not cynical , I'm realistic; if it's shit, it's shit." received lots of laughs.

After the interval Proops jested that the theatre felt like a ghost town. This, unfortunately, was followed by an almost complete lack of response from the audience for the last half of the show.

Each new sketch fell on more awkward silences, especially after a determined effort to make Gloria Estefan and her suicidal wallaby collection amusing. Most of the audience found themsleves cringing at one point when he lost any sense of style or momentum , stumbling over words and repeating material.

In a contrived attempt to uphold his reputation as we neared the end, Proops launched himself into the difficult territory of religion and racism. Unfortunately, images of God with his white beard and Jesus being cool simply weren't funny .

Keeping true to his reputation , Proops certainly left the audience with a lasting impression . However, given the wooden jokes and unsophisticated approach in the latter half, Proops was far from the master of cutting comment we had believed him Sam Jackson to be.

ike most people, tutus are normally what springs to mind when ballet is mentioned to me. However, this new interpretation of the romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet by the Northern Ballet Theatre breaks away completely from ballet as we know it.

The emphasis was placed as much on acting and plot as it was on dance. The performance had all the gracefulness and precision of classical ballet, but the movement was entwined with a clear storyline that was completely faithful to Shakespeare's text. I was curious about exactly how the play's aggression and fighting would be portrayed in this format, but there was plenty of contact between the dancers, with the kicks and

punches looking almost convincing. Careful timing maintained the elegance and served to remind the audience that they were really watching a ballet.

Both Romeo (Denis Malinkire) and Juliet (Jane Regan) put on shining acts, being technically accurate and completely in tune with each other.

The set captured the tense Verona atmosphere, as did the costumes, whilst the orchestra's stirring performance of Prokofiev's famous score added to the overall quality of the performance.

This reworked show is far more accessible to people than previous performances by the National Ballet Theatre. lt ·is certainly worth a viewing - even if traditional ballet doesn't exactly Sarah Moore have you drooling in anticipation!

LORCA EXHIBITION SAINSBURY CENTRE

T

here is another dead artist's exhibition on at the Sainsbury Centre that you should see. Were you one of those pubescent teenagers that searched for the meaning of life by doodling for hours in the back of your Maths book?

Well, Lorca's work might just bring you back to the mothership of your soul. His art, however. is not strikingly beautiful.

1t is more a collection of carefully placed lines and scribbles which combine to create something quite disturbing within you . But although the young Lorca was indeed disturbed, the scarf clad critic whom I was shown around by assured me he was not insane.

He was however, obsessed by death, fish, Saint Sebastian, clowns, Lucifer and the male organ represented by fish . One of his works depicts a headless and armless woman with the usual chunky hips. Between the woman 's legs is a turf of pubic hair like feed ing tentacles. The critic enthused how it depicted the Freudian effect that occurs when the son first sees her mother naked; he feels he has been castrated . I have to admit I winced at the sight of the picture.

His other works such as 'THE SO[N OF A BITCH?]' and 'SHIT' are equal psychobabble too.

But even if you just see 'Shit, exhibit no. 23' it is still a great excuse to pretend you are in the PompJdou Centre, Paris!

r Raj Persaud is a man who thinks he knows a lot. We've all seen him sitting on the sofa with Richard and Judy, helping everyone from housewives with herpes to bachelors with boils. And now he wants to keep us all in tip top mental condition with his brand new book, Staying Sane the essential guidebook for avoiding those mental potholes we could all fall into at any time.

Raj is qualified in psychiatry as well as having the normal doctorate In medecine and so is better placed than most other TV doctors to have an opinion on something as serious as mental health.

In these stressful times there are an ever spiralling number of counsellors ready to sort out your problems. yet Raj implores us to remember that having friends who are willing to listen is worth an ark of these professionals.

We should work at making an effort with friendships and enjoy the good times with each other, as well as helping one another through the hard times. Our brains need to be exercised. Apparently we should avoid living in a world dominated by duvet slumberland and television. They can become oppressive and claustrophobic - and Raj should know. Perhaps he's getting ready to take his own advice and jump the good ship Richard and Judy.

Students are singled out by Raj as particularly at risk since these are the years when many of us could face serious pressure or failure for the first time. Raj tells us not to bottle it up and make sure we use some good friendships to keep us mentally healthy and to stay sane. Not very radical suggestions. but good advice anyway.

WithStaying Sane Dr Raj may not offer the most innovative solutions but he has written a very worthwhile book which could be the one to reach for when life gets hard to bear.

o share or not to share? (accommodation that is). Definitely not it seems, at least according to this new book. That is, unless it's on a purely experimental basis whilst you try and make it to the shores of affluence and choice.

Long gone, it seems, are the times when communes and communal sharing worked, and people stole food and slept with other people's boy/girlfriends.

Nowadays you've got to slope off to your room , hungry or emotionally devastated, in a blind stew and COPE. Or MOVE OUT. John Birmingham's book does give you a few tips to give you confidence and help you get your sense of humour back. Uke men definitely need women to live with.

And don't live with junkies. But watch out, you can't always spot them. They can creep in all innocent-like, but they can creep out just as innocently too, only this time with all your gear. My recommendation? A snifter dog as standard for the house pet.

Last tip. Notes apparently cost lives. Or at least reputations. So, once you've been reduced to leaving notes for flatmates, move.

How can anyone find it in them to share with 89 flatmates in just one lifetime? His narrative is interesting, but his facts flit around too .,. much, with time and chronology meaning nothing. By his own admission though, much of it was a 'narcotic blur'. He also repeats himself too many times. How often do we need to know that magic mushrooms grew in the garden?

Still, it's a mad, recognisable world that includes girls with "biro tatts" and parties with "cheap vile, generic brand tequila, the sort with a dead plastic scorpion bumping around down the bottom of the bottle.• And there are flatmates to do your head in, "until your head falls into pieces, like a chocolate orange." Sound familiar?!
