Tia White has been a carer since she was seven, when her father suffered a brain stem stroke in front of her, leaving him fully paralysed. Her mother’s health has also declined due to serious arthritis.

“When I'm home, my identity is as a ‘carer’, not Tia.”

UEA Residential Life staff are warning students about the risks of mixing drugs, alcohol and prescription medication, saying some may not fully understand what they are taking.

Staff member Daryl Sharpe told Concrete that fear of getting into trouble can prevent students from seeking help, while new social situations can create pressure to drink or take drugs.

Sharpe said

“You are never the expert that you think you are on what you’re putting into your body if you’re not completely aware of what that is."

Residential Life staff are urging students to seek help quickly if someone is in serious distress.

Three years ago, I arrived at UEA wondering if I had made a mistake.

I remember missing my family, worrying about the money and wondering why I had moved my entire life to Norwich. Everyone tells you university will be the best years of your life, but nobody really tells you what happens when it doesn’t feel like that at first.

I didn’t find my people in first year. I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I spent far too much time worrying about how I was perceived and whether I was doing university “right”.

Then, slowly, things changed.

I found friends. I found things I cared about. I became more

comfortable being myself. I started saying yes to opportunities I would once have talked myself out of.

Now, heading into my final year, I can see that I was never supposed to arrive at university as the finished version of myself.

Neither are you.

You will change your mind. You will make mistakes. Some people will stay, others won’t. You’ll have brilliant days and days when you question everything. That’s all part of it.

So don’t worry about making these three years perfect. Just make them yours.

University calls for unofficial event caution Jamie Mann News Editor

Both the UEA and its Student Union (SU) have urged incoming first-years to be wary of phoney gatherings at the beginning of term.

Guidance on how to spot a ‘fake event’ was linked to the 2026 Welcome Week page of the UEA website, which said that: “unofficial events are not necessarily legal, safe, exclusively for students, or even real.”

The SU has also provided information on spotting the difference between official and unofficial events via a post on the @ueasu_events Instagram account.

The official undergraduate UEA ‘Welcome Week’ is taking place from 14 to 18 September, with the longer SU ‘Welcome Festival’ running from 12 to 27 September.

NEWS New anatomy suite has opened Lilia Colledge News Editor

Work has finished on a new anatomy suite extension at UEA’s Edith Cavell Building.

The university says the facility will expand anatomy teaching and surgical education, allowing up to 120 medical students to be taught in a single session for the first time.

UEA said the development will provide students and healthcare professionals with access to real human anatomy alongside new educational technology.

Kerry Barr and her daughter Jodie Cloud both completed a Master’s in Advanced Social Work this summer.

Speaking to UEA’s Communications team, Jodie said she was “incredibly proud” of her mum.

“Sharing the day with my mum to celebrate her achievement too, and the support from each other and our wider families and friends is invaluable.”

Kerry said graduating alongside her daughter “meant everything”.

“To celebrate such a significant achievement together is something I will cherish forever.”

SCI-TECH Get your geek on: The Sci-Tech Societies to join Sam Phillips and Pia Subong Described in detail by the Daily Mail’s 2027 University Guide, UEA ranks in the top 25 across our different schools of science and technology, in the UK. Meaning that we have no shortage of societies for you to meet like-minded and friendly people, and to keep you up to speed with your studies!

Winners of the SU’s Society of the Month in October 2025, Biochemistry society has all the best socials to bring biochemists, biologists and chemists together.

Their infamous annual Lab Coat Bar Crawl donated over £1,000 for Breast Cancer Now, raising awareness for the charity while raising shot glasses.

For £3 for the whole year, you can get access to discounted tickets for every social and a space to properly meet people you see every week in the labs.

UEA’s Psychology society is another example of a thriving society at UEA, hosting collaborations with other societies, like the collaboration last May with the Burlesque society on body positivity and chronic illness awareness. They also managed to raise over £500 for The Matthew Project, a local charity supporting people affected by substance misuse and mental health charities.

The largest student-led society UEA have to offer is none other than Medsoc. Winners of Student Society of the year 2026, by the SU, Medsoc endeavors to give members exclusive revision materials and support to ensure their success.

This year, Medsoc are providing fresher’s and refresher’s exclusive welcome week events and activities to meet other medics, all with a single wristband.

Equating to £12 a year, Medsoc offer a £60 membership which lasts the whole duration of the 5 year-long course at UEA medical school.

Makes: 10 cookies | Cost: £5.72 a batch (57p each) Serves: 2 | Time: 25–30 minutes | Cost: £6.70 per serving

Ingredients · 125g salted butter · 210g caster sugar · 1 large egg · 1 tsp vanilla extract · 35g cocoa powder · 215g plain flour · ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda · ½ tsp baking powder · 100g each white, milk and dark chocolate Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Soften the butter in the microwave for 15 seconds.

2. Mix butter, sugar, egg and vanilla until creamy. Sieve in the flour and cocoa powder, then add the bicarbonate of soda and baking powder.

3. Chop the three chocolates into chunks and shavings, then mix into the dough.

4. Roll into 10 balls (around 63g each) and place five per lined or greased tray.

5. Bake for 10–12 minutes. They should still look soft when they come out.

6. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then dig in!

The liver pick-me-up

Method 1. Cook your spaghetti in salted water. Before draining, save some of the pasta water.

2. While the pasta cooks, prepare the mushrooms, garlic and parsley. Whisk the sour cream and eggs together in a bowl, then add Parmesan, salt and pepper.

3. Fry the mushrooms in olive oil over medium heat until golden. Add the garlic and fry for another minute or two. Turn off the heat and stir through the parsley.

4. Return the pasta to its warm pot and quickly stir through the egg mixture. Do this off the heat to avoid scrambling the eggs.

5. If the sauce is too thick, add pasta water one tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.

6. Serve immediately and top with the mushrooms, extra Parmesan, parsley and plenty of black pepper.

EDITORIAL Letter from the editor Dear reader, Here is my very first editor's letter. I feel like Carrie Bradshaw but without the obsession with Big or the Manolol Blahniks…although I would love some. As many of you face new chapters I can confirm you are in good company as we all move forward to our next steps. If you are feeling major imposter syndrome then know that you are not alone; I too am confused where the summer went and how I will navigate the big new responsibilities I have. Yet I am a big believer in nothing good ever being easy, so am welcoming in the challenge. Fresh starts come with a lot of questions. Despite now going into my second year I still found myself scrambling to buy more plates and picking out new bedding. There is a lot of decision fatigue floating around as we all gather to start the next part of our lives, whether that is the big leap of beginning university or the even bigger leap of preparing ourselves for what we do afterwards. Our Venue team are no stranger to the changes of life themselves and have compiled the best fashion tips, music bites, film watches and book reads to get you through this new season.

As we cool down from one of the hottest summers ever on record I have to confess I have been eyeing up all my jackets and I am craving a night dancing in the city before getting welcomed home by the rain as we leave the bar. As much as I think it is important to take a break, I fear it gets boring after a while. So here we all are, back in the swing of academia trying to balance our lives around it. But what about its source text, the book? The original text, written in 1999, follows 15-year-old Charlie as he begins a new chapter of his life, as a freshman in high school. In a series of letters to an unnamed addressee, we see him struggle to make friends, fall in love for the first time, and navigate his life following the death of his aunt Helen and the suicide of his childhood best friend. With themes of unrequited friendship, grief, and killer needle drops every other chapter, The Perks of Being a Wallflower has made sure I am never alone in everything I feel and experience. Though we are no longer 15, and it is 2026, we have a lot we can learn from Charlie at this new stage in our lives: “This moment will just be another story someday.”

FILM + TV La La Land Review by Elliott Lecointe 10 years ago, Damien Chazelle gifted us a one-ofa-kind movie, a film which celebrated the ones who dream, La Land Land.

Here, with one of the most swooning soundtracks in cinema; Stone & Gosling portray one of the most yearnful and true romances we have seen on screen. A wonderful homage to golden-age of Hollywood, where Chazelle directs us through a city of stars. Released again to commemorate its anniversary, despite some critics sowing seeds of it being “overrated”, the film has only grown more sentimental to us ‘dreamers’.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma Review by Edie Davies Jane Schoenbrun's newest feature film is a visually stunning, well-acted, and thematically layered examination of how our identities are shaped by the media we consume. Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson put in show stopping lead performances; the couple's exploration of the sexually taboo and horrific feels honest and beautiful, inviting audiences to experience pleasure without judgement. The standout element of this film is of course the iconic slasher villain, Little Death.

Jack Haven delivers a stellar non-speaking performance that addresses the trope of the transgender villain expertly. Schoenbrun’s direction of Little Death’s first appearance may be the standout cinematic moment of 2026. Overall, queer horror fans will adore the campy gore, honest sexuality, and surreal commentary. Jane Schoenbrun has once again proved that she belongs in the pantheon of modern horror greats.

All The Trimmings : Tony Review by Ben Heiss Cig-in-mouth and lobster-stained hands in some stylish slacks, Dominic Sessa grumpily strides Matt Johnson’s new film into intense but intimate territory. Tony is as emotionally bloody as a rare steak, but also just as raw - offering a thrilling portrait of young adulthood and all its mishaps, misdirections and ugly trimmings. Concerned with how the myth of the ill-fated artist distorts legacy, Tony sharply cuts through the trite characterisation of cultural “coolness” that Bourdain carries, offering something more human. Although at times the indie-minded filmmaking is too meandering for a portrait that should be as rapidly cut as the garlic on a busy night in the kitchen.

Can music be found in a world of literature?

‘Everything will be just fine, everything’s gonna be alright’ I have this 2000s pop punk hit on repeat whenever going through any kind of change. I remember driving to UEA on first year move-in day and playing this upbeat track to calm my nerves. Not only can you jump and dance around listening to the song, but the lyrics are why I find it so important to listen to in times of anxiety and self-doubt. Moving away from home and leaving friends behind can be nerve-wracking but university is a great opportunity, and music can help you get through it.

NOT TiGHT by DOMI and JD Beck Review by Elliott Lecointe Need an album to study to? For my recommendation, I would suggest one of my favourite albums I have come across in my late-night studies, “NOT TiGHT” from DOMI & JD Beck.

Not only a showcase in immense musical talent from these prodigies, but also a demonstration of how jazz is still evolving, with some complex yet lo-fi sounds which sonically put you in a sense of focus. With some strong showings from Thundercat, Mac DeMarco, Anderson.

Paak, the album is quality, especially when in comparison to their sophomore album, which lacked that extraordinary, complimentarily weird edge that NOT TiGHT has.

Pressure to Party by Julia Jacklin Review by Aparna Manoj Back in 2019, Pressure to Party by Julia Jacklin dominated my headphones. The pop beats fascinated me as they create a facade of somebody partying while dreading to leave their dark room. The song felt like a balm for the soul as it validated all the pressure I felt: the pressure to move on quickly, make conversation when I didn't feel like it, and not say something that might turn people off. Most of all, it encouraged me to bide my own time, move forward as I saw fit and try to love again soon.

By the time you are hit with the brilliant idea of mastering an instrument and becoming a music enthusiast, there is already a child, not 3 years out of the womb, who has a 15-year head start on you. So, where would you go to learn and immerse yourself in music? Surely not a town such as Norwich, that champions creativity through literacy?

The anonymous ‘they’ always tell you to start young; that to master something, you need 10,000 hours practice, and it is easier to pick up skills as a child. For all the people telling you that it is too late, there are others that understand that artistic and creative desire can visit us at various stages in our lives. Whether you are 5, 50, or even rekindling your relationship at 25, music does not discriminate based on age. You just have to find where it is accessible.

For university students, the UEA Music Centre is a perfect starting point. If you own an instrument already but have nowhere to play, or would like to improve your craft, visit one of the many bookable practice rooms, available from 8am to 10pm every day. The rooms include a piano for any aspiring pianists, as well as music stands.

Offering multiple student-led opportunities, learning about music never felt more attainable at UEA. With the UEA Music Society,

students can join groups like: The Big Band, Grooves, String Ensemble and more to socialise through music. As well as this, there are societies like UEA choir and Musical Theatre society, dedicated to the instrument we are all born with – our voices!

If you are a beginner and have no experience with music at all, there are external companies that offer one-to-one lessons in Norwich. Cookes guitar shop in the centre of town offers a range of tutors for a wide selection of instruments (guitar, bass, clarinet, piano etc). A great online source to check out is the Norfolk & Suffolk Music Hub website, where societies, clubs and experiences in the area are advertised. They offer a variety of entry level workshops for those who want to practice with likeminded people, making music a less daunting feat.

Some may be deterred from the musical potential of Norwich since it has such intrinsic ties with writing. As the city of literature, Norwich is of course characterised by creative writing. However, when one art is present, the others follow. Music blooms here. It is even present in the student bands have been created at UEA like The Aide and Decorum Zing. There are so many ways to get involved in music. It is one of the most accepting mediums in which we can all connect; therefore, it should be limited for no one.

In Norwich, music is certainly for everyone.

Dead Wax is relatively new to Norwich, opening December last year but it has already left its mark.

We discovered it one wet January night during one of their DJ events. They often have events that are free to attend which makes it great for students. There is a large offering of styles from hyperpop to DNB nights as well as the substantial array of poetry readings and pub quizzes. Lit by red lighting and split over two floors with a sizeable garden including wooden heated shelters, it truly offers a bit of everything. Whether you want to sit downstairs and chat or head upstairs and dance, you can do it all.

Our love for Space Studios was found thanks to me (Erin) dragging everyone along to an event I was photographing. It was such a fast fan favourite amongst my friends that instead of asking “When do lectures start again?” it was “When can we go back to Space?” Positioned in the heart of Norwich's lanes, downstairs is a VERY sweaty venue showcasing everything from energetic indie gigs under the glitterball, to live DJ sets, there is something for everyone. But the magic of Space does not end there, if you head up the stairs, a rooftop bar is revealed with an amazing view of the Norwich skyline. For chill nights

For nights when the crowds are overwhelming or you would like to imagine you live in Stars Hollow, The Holloway is a fabulous spot. Championing true grassroots musicians in its cosy basement den shrouded by fairy lights, it feels about

as close as I feel you can get to a nineties garage band performance. The space evokes an intimacy with your fellow concergoers and the band themselves as it is all one level, leaving a quite literal even playing field. It is a venue that views music as a shared experience in the truest form of the word and it is wonderful.

Tucked out of the way down one of Norwich’s greatest roads and a bustling bookshop and cafe in the day, it is the ultimate spot for those who appreciate a tight knit community.

Just off Prince of Wales Road, The Last Pub Standing evokes a nice, relaxing alternative to the hustle and bustle of this famous clubbing road in Norwich. Its schedule is jam packed with interesting events.

The LCR is always there to return to, and our second-year selves are already dreaming of sports nights tickets. Whilst the LCR remains an important part of a UEA students' education, do not miss the magic that awaits in the rest of Norwich. It is the home of so much creativity ingenuity, so go get exploring.

FASHION How to be a cool kid Violette Douglas Venue Editor As you frantically unpack your bags trying to work out the best way to fit thirty coats on the two pegs on the back of your bedroom door; let me offer some humble advice on dressing cool.

There is a never-ending pressure to appear cool, to dress in a way that garners the public appeal.

Yet, the coolest people I know have never been trying to fit in. The desire to conform to standards some algorithms set once is palpable, and sometimes when I stand at the train station in my tiny hometown… it still gets me. However, as I enter my second year at university, I find such a pride in my ever-evolving style, because it finally feels like me. My many, many, many bangles that seem to grow in collection quicker than the storage space does, to my obsession with wearing a scarf as anything but a scarf are all part of the balance I have created.

It takes time to find yourself and maybe longer to

find your style. In reality, I think you never even do find it because like everything good, it should remain changing. Nothing great was ever set in stone. However, I am not suggesting you move through your wardrobe items faster than the last melting ice cream in the freezer. The true strength of any fashionista is knowing how to make old things new. A skill that only grows in importance as we cement ourselves in an era where conscious fashion consumption is no longer the overly empathetic choice, it is the only one. More clothes are not the answer, ingenuity is.

Shopping second hand is everywhere these days including online with the likes of Vinted. Luckily there are even more ways to shop sustainably; for example, my current love affair of fashion - an inherited wardrobe.

My mother is an infinite muse of mine;

one who still frequently offers me golden nuggets of her awesome nineties clothing. The most recent being a complete robbery of her vintage belt selection. It makes her happy to see her old clothes being given new life and it gives me a joy to know that not only am I wearing history, but I am continuing hers.

So perhaps being a cool kid is not about knowing it all but knowing when to admit borrowing fashion tips from the past is your greatest asset.

Perhaps you do not need to be so afraid of not being cool when no one else really is either, including those fashion influencers you follow. I bet their floors are covered in clothes, and they doubt whether their newest outfit will be well received.

Yet they are still getting dressed every morning.

The best of our wardrobes is sometimes found in the bottom of a pile.

So, go have a dig. Enjoy this opportunity to dress for you, whether you are new to Norwich or in your final year, every day is a new one. Every day is a great day to be a cool kid.

When packing up my life a week before starting at UEA, I had a million questions running through my mind. What is the dress code for club nights?

How much effort is too much effort for lecture outfits? What are other people wearing? Is there an unwritten rule everyone else knows that I don’t? Am I going to have to buy a whole new wardrobe?

It can be quite a daunting task transitioning from the comfort of sixth form, where there may have been a uniform, or if not, you knew enough people to work out the type of attire you wanted before the first day.

Before starting university, it can be quite difficult to grasp the same information, and instead it’s a guessing game with endless hours of doomscrolling

Now after two years at UEA, I can confirm that any doubtful notions need to get out of your head! There are so many changes attached to coming to university, and most of them are completely unexpected. Coming to a new place knowing no one can be intimidating, especially because you have no idea what you’re walking into.

But I’ve learnt that’s the fun part of it! In the first few weeks it is normal to feel as though you should change your style so that you can fit the style that everyone else has —except that’s impossible.

It's impossible because university is full of so many styles that are all so different from each other. University isn’t about changing to suit other people and match what everyone seems to be wearing, it’s about changing to reflect who you are as an individual! This is the perfect time to experiment with different styles and learn more about fashion!

Top five fashion must haves Grace Mahon Fashion Editor While it may seem that you have numerous outfits to wear in the first couple of weeks as a first-year student, take my word for it when I say you will be scrambling for something to wear

by Christmas.

Everything seems overworn now, or you still haven’t purchased a top to go with the skirt you’ve been dying to wear. Luckily this problem can easily be alleviated with a few essentials!

This list provides a recommendation of the top five basic clothing staples needed in a university wardrobe to make any outfit look effortlessly put together: 1) Vest tops—in as many colours as possible. Easy to pair, easy to match, easy to wear when it seems like nothing will go with the trousers. A vest top is incredibly versatile for layering or pairing on its own and will not let you down!

2) A good pair of jeans—they don’t have to be pricey, either! Jeans are a great investment and worth the money as you will reach for them more than you initially think. Before university, I relied on my leggings for everything.

Then I bought an amazing pair from

Hollister, and I don’t mean to be dramatic but I’m not sure how I ever lived without them.

3) Your favourite cozy jumper—for when the weather begins to chill and the library sessions become more frequent. A cozy jumper will quickly become a go-to lecture outfit for more people the closer it gets to autumn.

4) A pair of fun trainers—these are an essential for any occasion! They’re nice to wear around campus, explore the city of Norwich in, or even wearing to the LCR, because if you’re like me, I cannot work out how people are wearing heels on nights out. A pair of trainers are always handy to have.

5) A little black dress— a little black dress is perfect for any occasion. The black dress is the base of an outfit and can be a real statement piece. Only requiring minimal accessorising and a gorgeous pair of shoes (or white trainers!), this can save last minute panics when finally deciding to go out and having nothing to wear. There are several different ways to wear a little black dress—whether at the races, an LCR event, exploring Norwich, or running late for a seminar, the adaptability of a black dress means you can dress it up or dress it down. Perfect for evening or day!

Welcome to Concrete, lovely readers, both old and new; I am so proud to be writing for Advice this year as your Agony Aunt.

Every year at uni, you’ll face challenges and life experiences that sometimes you can’t always go to your peers for, so my role is to advise and support you in these moments. Through your questions and my responses, we can also help students going through similar problems. But— Freshers—right now you’re probably just wanting to know how to tackle ‘uni life.’

Of course, the new academic year can bring a lot to tackle, especially when you are moving to a whole new campus and way of life. I have responded to a couple of your kindly given questions, and I’m excited to respond to many more in the coming months!

How exciting! And how normal to be nervous too. Although it’s true that it can be awkward for your texting relationship to graduate to a real-life connection, what you need is an activity—a medium—for you to both focus on together. This will remove pressure from the daunting ‘meeting each other’ aspect, as you have something to do. And thankfully there’s plenty to do around Norwich. If you want to stay on campus, perhaps suggest a game of pool at the SU bar (sometimes even funnier if you’re both not good at it!) or get the bus into the city and explore the market food

stalls together, or the beautiful independent shops and lanes of Norwich. Be kind to yourself and take it easy—make it a fun experience!

“How do I cope with making friends at uni and experiencing loneliness, especially when they are busy?”

We are all itching to make good friends and spend time with them to build a good connection. If you find yourself with friends who aren’t making time for you, or really are too busy, please don’t feel like they are the be all and end all!

If I’ve learned anything from making friends at uni, it’s that friendship is a two-way street. It’s great to be a forthcoming person and make plans with people—don’t ever lose that part of yourself—but learn to recognise when your efforts are not reciprocated. An amazing part of uni is that you can make friends throughout the year, not just within your first week, so it’s not a crime to decide you want to let some people go. In fact, it can be a really smart decision to make.

But if you’re feeling lonely, seek comfort; call your home friends or take a day for yourself to do something you enjoy.

Sometimes all you need is a reset.

Venue’s Ultimate Guide to Welcome Week with new flatmates, friends, and potential crushes.

Edie Davies Events Editor Welcome Week is back and, courtesy of the Student Union, has arrived with a line-up of brandnew events. This year, UEA’s general administration have transferred authority over Freshers events to the SU, who have now revealed over a fortnight’s worth of daytime activities and LCR club nights between the 12th – 30th of September.

For returning students, it will not be surprising to hear the names of classic LCR club nights in this year’s schedule. Events like the Welcome Party, Silent Disco, Glow Party, and Traffic Light Party are essential for Freshers who want to dance their way into the first term

Alongside old faithful’s, themed music nights have taken centre stage of Welcome Week this year.

R&B club night “No Scrubs” launches the series on the 18th of September, followed by Pop, Indie, and Latin events stretching until the 26th of September, making it easy to find a night that suits your tastes.

Those who don’t mind what’s coming through the speakers at the LCR can also find fun in a Fancy Dress event. Don’t worry, there’s no need to spend your Student Loan on costumes; the LCR are hosting a Slumber Party on the 15th of September and an “Anything But Clothes” Club Night on the 29th of September, where you can build an outfit out of what you already have!

If the club seems a little overwhelming for your first week at university, or you simply prefer an afternoon sweet-treat or a cozy night, feel free to take part in plenty of slower-paced events run by the SU! Sober socials like Game Nights, Crafting Sessions, Mini-Golf, and Film Screenings will run during afternoons between the 9th-13th of September.

However, what is sure to be an action-packed month of events may come with uncertainty for first years.

Many off-campus clubs also advertise Freshers events, despite not being associated with UEA’s Student Union.

Luckily, there are ways to recognise a university-based Welcome Week party.

If you’re scrolling social media for Freshers Week inspiration, always look for the LCR and SU stamp of approval on the bottom of posts. These will be published by @ueasu_events on In- stagram, the official hub for on-campus events.

The best way to know if an event is legitimate is to check the Student Union website, where a complete events schedule is posted, and you can buy tickets for Welcome Week before they inevitably sell out.
