Director’s Note

Richard II is a complex political drama displaying the fight for rule of England between the current king, Richard II, and his cousin Henry Bolingbroke. Chronologically, this is the first of a series of Shakespeare’s Histories detailing the trials and tribulations of Richard II, Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VI, and Richard III (often referred to as the Henriad). If you are a fan of shows like Game of Thrones or The West Wing, you will find similar intrigue and shifting allegiances throughout Shakespeare’s Histories.
Edward III was the father of York, Gaunt (father of Henry Bolingbroke), Gloucester, and Edward the Black Prince (father of Richard II). When the Black Prince dies, Richard II is made king (at 10 years old!!). A major complaint of Richard’s rule is over-taxation and wasteful spending. Just prior to the start of the show, Gloucester was killed by Thomas Mowbray under the secret order of Richard II. In the opening scene, Henry is accusing Mowbray of the death of his uncle Gloucester and demands a trial by combat.
We are so thrilled to be back for more outdoor Shakespeare! It has been a truly wonderful experience working with both new and returning members of this troupe. We hope in the coming years to continue to unfold the saga of Shakespeare’s Henriad. Thank you so much for coming and we hope you enjoy the show!
