WELCOME

Welcome, graduates, family, friends and honoured guests
On behalf of the entire Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) community, I am honoured to welcome you to our annual convocation celebration. We gather today to celebrate the great achievements of our graduating class of 2024: the young people for whom our institution exists; the ethos of why we do what we do here at CUE.
CUE is located on Treaty 6 territory and respects the histories, languages, and cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada, whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant community. We are committed to furthering reconciliation efforts as we learn about our true and living history, and challenge ourselves to implement what we have learned to create better outcomes for Indigenous students and our greater CUE community. Our graduates have shown courage, resilience, and excellence during their time here at CUE. The post-
secondary environment provides a variety of new challenges for students—not only academically— and our graduates have persevered! This adaptability will serve them well as they go on to do great things in their careers and their communities. Here at CUE, being successful means more than just doing well in your studies. We are dedicated to inspiring good citizens, people who are community builders and ethical leaders for the common good. On our campus, what you do matters as much as how you do it. And it is the connections to the people we meet along the way that make that journey worth it.
Graduates, I am so proud of you. Today you convocate from CUE and join the elite ranks of our alumni! We are so excited to see the places you go and the things you will accomplish. You’ll always have a place to belong here in our CUE community and we hope you stay in touch with us. Congratulations!
Dr. Tim Loreman President and Vice-ChancellorOUR HISTORY
Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) is more than an academic institution—we are a community of scholars, dreamers, and doers; people who aren’t afraid to lend a hand, to ask questions, to be bold, to make a difference. For more than 100 years, we have gathered in the heart of Edmonton’s Highlands community and committed ourselves to creating independent thinkers, ethical leaders, and citizens for the common good.
Founded in 1921 as Concordia College by Lutherans from the Americanbased Missouri Synod, the college became a degree-granting institution in 1987 before changing its name to Concordia University College of Alberta in 1995. In 2015, Concordia University College of Alberta became CUE—a secular post-secondary institution that offers an exceptional
learning environment, world-class research centres and facilities, and a premier student experience.
Today, CUE is a vibrant and forwardthinking university. We offer more than 50 undergraduate majors, concentrations and minors, 4 master’s degree programs, and 1 doctorate degree program, in addition to several afterdegree programs, graduate and undergraduate certificates and diplomas, and continuing education programs. We are known for our commitment to academic excellence in teaching and research, and we proudly welcome more than 3,500 students annually from across Canada and around the world.
From humble beginnings, CUE has evolved into a place of spirit,

connection, and excellence, and has entered our next century with momentum as we strive to fulfill our promise of being Canada’s preeminent small university.
No matter what lies ahead for CUE, we will continue to nurture the century-old spirit of community present on our campus, and we will take pride in the stories that are passed down through generations of our students.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
Academic regalia dates back to that which was worn by academics and clergy in European universities of the Middle Ages. The various components of academic regalia have come to symbolize levels of academic scholarship. Variations in sleeves, colours, and decorations represent degree levels and the particular preferences of individual universities. Faculty and guests with doctoral-level degrees participating in Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE)’s graduation ceremonies wear the distinctive academic gown, hood, and cap of the institution from which they graduated.
Hoods are granted to students who have earned university degrees. The hoods for CUE’s graduates are lined with blue and white, CUE’s official colours. The colour of the velvet edging indicates the academic discipline in which the degree has been earned:
ARTS White SCIENCE Gold
MANAGEMENT
Drab
EDUCATION Blue
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH Salmon
DOCTOR OF LAWS Purple
The gold cord indicates a degree earned with distinction or with high distinction.

CEREMONIAL SYMBOLS
CEREMONIAL MACE
The mace is a symbolic artifact that has been used throughout human history. From an emblem used to lead knights into war, to other regal purposes, the mace is now used by post-secondary institutions as a symbol of the organization’s governing authority. The mace-bearer leads the processional as all authorities gather for the most central ceremony of the institution—convocation. The mace, unique in design to embody CUE, rests on its stand throughout the ceremony, as our students are recognized for their earned degrees, diplomas, or certificates.
EAGLE STAFF
An Eagle Staff is a sacred item prepared with prayer and eagle feathers as a ceremonial display of leadership. Eagle feathers, when gifted, are considered the highest honour given by the Indigenous community. The eagle flies the highest, making it the closest being to Creator. When an eagle gifts us its feathers we use them to acknowledge a major contribution or achievement. Each eagle feather on a staff holds significance and tells a story. The CUE Eagle Staff was created by our Elders Council with many feathers from four communities across Turtle Island. Our Elders Council determines the carrier of the staff, and the CUE President is given the responsibility to keep and display our staff as a reminder to model leadership and to maintain good relations within the Indigenous community.
HONOUR SONG
The Honour Song is a prayer drum song to honour all graduates and the work they have completed while at CUE. It also honours those recipients who have demonstrated a commitment to their community. It is an Indigenous way of celebrating and sending wishes of health and happiness to those who are moving on to their next journeys.

MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER OF ALBERTA

On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to send greetings to the Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Class of 2024.
For more than a century, CUE has been part of our capital city and our province’s post-secondary education landscape. It has changed and grown, becoming a landmark on Ada Boulevard and a vibrant, welcoming and world-class degree granting institution. But this celebration is not about the university. While CUE has played an important role in your life and your future opportunities, this moment is all about you.
It takes courage and determination to choose a path and follow it to the end. It takes a lot of creativity, hard work, long hours and sacrifice to complete the requirements for the credentials you have earned, and I hope you enjoy this time to pat yourself on the back. No matter where you go from here, I have no doubt you will excel and become a vital part of your community.
Congratulations on this incredible milestone, and thank you for being part of Alberta’s story. Please accept my very best wishes for continued success.

Honourable Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta

2024 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

DR. LEONARD RATZLAFF
Since 1981, Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff has served as a mentor to students and professionals alike and has taken his directorial talents to prominent local, national and international stages to help curate a strong community of choral talent across all ages in and around the city of Edmonton.
Through nearly four decades at the University of Alberta, he co-founded and later directed the master’s and doctoral choral conducting programs and directed the award-winning University of Alberta Madrigal Singers. His graduate teaching helped develop
the talents and foster the passions of local choral conductors. As of fall 2021, every choral director at an Edmonton post-secondary institution was a product of his graduate program. His alumni can be found across Canada and also span the globe, from the Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary, to The Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, Netherlands.
Dr. Ratzlaff made an effort to include young musicians in his works and provide experiences that were previously thought unattainable to children’s and youth choirs. He consistently programmed music to create opportunities for previously unexposed groups to gain access to valuable experiences. He also commissioned and premiered numerous choral works by Canadian composers.
He was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Golden, Diamond and Platinum Jubilee medals for his contributions to his community and to Canada. He was named to the City of Edmonton Arts & Culture Hall of Fame, the Alberta Order of Excellence, and was inducted as a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Ratzlaff was named as a member of the Order of Canada in 2004.
Colleagues, alumni, and friends speak to his encouragement, humour, and passion, and to his lasting legacy. Please join Concordia University of Edmonton in congratulating Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff on his honorary degree.
2024 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

TERESA SPINELLI
Teresa Spinelli is a staple of inner city Edmonton and Little Italy, providing leadership, vision, and selflessness in an effort to better the lives of those who cross her path–even indirectly.
Spinelli stepped in to lead the Italian Centre Shop in 2000, guiding the family business through growth, but never forgetting the community and sense of belonging that brought the company success through its previous 40+ years. Today, the Italian Centre serves as a valuable European goods importer and distributor, and has expanded through Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and
Calgary. Despite the growth, Spinelli’s locations remain important social hubs serving their communities.
While her businesses grow, Spinelli remains personally committed to the inner city communities. She has dedicated her time and energy outside of the Centre to organizations like the McCauley Boys and Girls Club, she was a founding member of the Avenue of Nations business revitalization zone, and served as a member of the Boyle Renaissance Advisory Committee for the City of Edmonton. Spinelli has also led key renovations for Giovanni Caboto Park, across from the Italian Centre’s Little Italy location.
Spinelli has been recognized for her numerous contributions and commitments to her local and global communities and has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Women Entrepreneurs and named a Global News Woman of Vision.
She has received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for Community Involvement, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for Alberta, and the Ordine Della Stella D’Italia Onorificenza di Cavaliere Award (Order of the Star of Italy) from the Italian government, to recognize Italians abroad who have best assisted in the reconstruction of Italy.
Please join Concordia University of Edmonton in congratulating Teresa Spinelli on her honorary degree.
GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC SILVER MEDAL
MORGAN SMITH
Graduate Morgan Smith was honoured with the Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal. Morgan is a graduate of the Bachelor of Science program with a major in mathematics and a minor in biology.
Morgan began her program planning to major in biology. In her second year, her academic advisor recommended she pursue a math minor—a move that would eventually lead to her new major.
“It caused me to take more math classes and I found that I truly enjoyed math and wanted to major in math instead of biology,” she said.
Beyond her bachelor’s degree, she hopes to further study mathematics, eager to see where the field leads her.
Morgan was drawn to the smaller scale of CUE, where she could get to know her classmates and professors. Her parents, both CUE alumni, also recommended the university.
Through her time at CUE, Morgan has been able to benefit from the smaller community, citing the friendships

she’s developed and the research projects she has been a part of as highlights of her time here.
Morgan would offer the same advice she was given: to try different classes and keep an open mind. You never know when your next passion will be uncovered.
GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC GOLD MEDAL
ERIN BOMBINI
Graduate Erin Bombini was honoured with the Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal. Erin is a graduate of the Master of Education in Educational Leadership program.
As a current educator, Erin felt that further pursuing studies through the Master of Education in Educational Leadership program would better support her through her career. She plans to take the knowledge gained from her master’s program to help strengthen her teaching methods and help her encourage her students to embrace art and augmented reality technologies across subject areas.
“I look forward to continuing to serve upcoming students in creative and innovative ways that embrace each student’s individual gifts and talents,” she says.
Erin completed her Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education (After Degree), and Master of Education degrees all at Concordia University of Edmonton.
“The smaller class sizes initially drew me to the university; however, returning for my education degree, getting to know the faculty, and completing the program further inspired me to pursue the Master of Education in Educational Leadership,” she says.

For students currently on the path to their degree, Erin says that it’s important to find ways to incorporate your passions into your studies.
“When I was able to integrate my love of art and interest in discovering educational technologies to support student learning into my final project, the work was much more meaningful, exciting, and relevant,” she says.
