The graduates we are honouring today have already shown tremendous perseverance and dedication to excellence amid uncertainty. The past two years have been challenging, and our graduates have proven that they are prepared to rise to any occasion, no matter the circumstances. It gives me great pride to recognize their achievements, and celebrate both their time at CUE and their next chapter. We do things differently at CUE, offering an educational experience

that goes further. We prioritize the needs of our students and are dedicated to their personal and academic success. CUE is a boutique university—small enough that every student is essential yet large enough to maintain a global outlook. In and out of our classrooms and halls, we translate what we learn into extraordinary hands-on experiences, and we have grown into a community of scholars from around the world, committed to making a difference and being leaders in the community. To our graduates, your time at CUE has given you the skills and tools that you need to make a difference—our world needs you and we cannot wait to see what you accomplish. OUR HISTORY Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) is more than an academic institution— we are a community of scholars, dreamers, and doers; people who aren’t afraid to lend a hand, to ask questions, to be bold, to make a difference. For more than 100 years, we have gathered in the heart of Edmonton’s Highlands community and committed ourselves to creating independent thinkers, ethical leaders, and citizens for the common good. Founded in 1921 as Concordia College by Lutherans from the Americanbased Missouri Synod, the college became a degree-granting institution in 1987 before changing its name to Concordia University College of Alberta in 1995. In 2015, Concordia University College of Alberta became CUE—a secular post-secondary institution that offers an exceptional

learning environment, world-class research centres and facilities, and a premier student experience. Today, CUE is a vibrant and forwardthinking university. We offer more than 50 undergraduate majors, concentrations and minors, 4 master’s degree programs, and 1 doctorate degree program, in addition to several afterdegree programs, graduate and undergraduate certificates and diplomas, and continuing education programs. We are known for our commitment to academic excellence in teaching and research, and we proudly welcome more than 3,500 students annually from across Canada and around the world.

ACADEMIC REGALIA Academic regalia dates back to that which was worn by academics and clergy in European universities of the Middle Ages. The various components of academic regalia have come to symbolize levels of academic scholarship. Variations in sleeves, colours, and decorations represent degree levels and the particular preferences of individual universities. Faculty and guests with doctoral-level degrees participating in Concordia’s graduation ceremonies wear the distinctive academic gown, hood, and cap of the institution from which they graduated. Hoods are granted to students who have earned University Degrees. The hoods for Concordia’s graduates are lined with blue and white, CUE’s official colours. The colour of the velvet edging indicates the academic discipline in which the degree has been earned: ARTS

CEREMONIAL MACE The mace is a symbolic artifact that has been used throughout human history. From an emblem used to lead knights into war, to other regal purposes, the mace is now used by post-secondary institutions as a symbol of the organization’s governing authority. The mace-bearer leads the processional as all authorities gather for the most central ceremony of the institution – convocation. The mace, unique in design to embody CUE, rests on its stand throughout the ceremony, as our students are recognized for their earned degrees, diplomas, or certificates.

EAGLE STAFF An Eagle Staff is a sacred item prepared with prayer and eagle feathers as a ceremonial display of leadership. Eagle feathers, when gifted, are considered the highest honour given by the Indigenous community. The eagle flies the highest, making it the closest being to Creator. When an eagle gifts us its feathers we use them to acknowledge a major contribution or achievement. Each eagle feather on a staff holds significance and tells a story. The CUE eagle staff was created by our Elders Council with many feathers from four communities across Turtle Island. Our Elders Council determines the carrier of the staff, and the CUE President is given the responsibility to keep and display our staff as a reminder to model leadership and to maintain good relations within the Indigenous community.

HONOUR SONG The Honour Song is a prayer drum song to honour all graduates and the work they have completed while at CUE. It also honours those recipients who have demonstrated a commitment to their community. It is an Indigenous way of celebrating and sending wishes of health and happiness to those who are moving on to their next journeys. 4

2022 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT AUDREY POITRAS Originally from the community of Elk Point, Alberta, Ms. Poitras is the longest serving and first female President of the Métis Nation of Alberta. Throughout her more than 25 years of leadership, she has inspired many by her unwavering commitment to advancing Métis rights and improving the well-being of Métis citizens in Alberta and Canada. As an ardent advocate of education, President Poitras successfully built partnerships with 17 post-secondary institutions across Alberta to create an endowment fund of over 30 million dollars for Métis students. She played a key role in the creation of the Rupertsland Institute Métis Centre of Excellence, the non-profit organization that administers endowment partnerships, including the one with Concordia University of Edmonton. As an important step towards reconciliation, President Poitras continues to secure groundbreaking political agreements that solidify the Métis Nation of Alberta’s right to participate and collaborate on decisions that impact the well-being of its members. She negotiated the first ever Métis Government Recognition and SelfGovernment Agreement with the Government of Canada and the most comprehensive Provincial Framework Agreement in the Métis Nation of Alberta’s history.

President Poitras is deeply committed to building a better economic future for the Métis Nation. She has been instrumental in developing business relationships and opening doors for Indigenous people’s involvement in the natural resource sector. In 2016, the Alberta Chamber of Resources recognized her efforts and named President Poitras as the Indigenous Leader of the Year. As a passionate supporter of preserving Métis culture, history and language, President Poitras helped create Métis Crossing, a multi-million dollar interpretive site near Smoky Lake, Alberta, and the province’s premiere Métis cultural centre. President Poitras has been honoured with numerous awards and achievements including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Women in Politics and she is in the Circle of Honour from the Institute For Advancement of Aboriginal Women. Audrey Poitras is a truly remarkable leader and an exemplary role model for all. GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC GOLD MEDAL ADEOLA ADETOKUNBO AYANDEYI Adeola Adetokunbo Ayandeyi, a graduate of the Master of Science in Information Technology program, is the 2022 Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal recipient. Originally from Ikeja, Nigeria, Adeola says she has always been intrigued by technology and how it could be used to solve problems in business, healthcare and the world at large. After earning an undergraduate degree in computer engineering, she thought “I knew that I could have a

great impact on people’s lives if only I could take the bold step to learn and research more.”

Her passion led Adeola to CUE. She credits the inclusive environment and supportive classmates for her positive student experience. While research was initially out of her comfort zone, Adeola says her professors helped her to make it one of her greatest strengths. Her research earned her multiple awards throughout her studies,

Now living in Nigeria, Adeola says she strives to be one of the best data engineers, helping businesses make good decisions through data analytics and having a positive impact on her industry. Although her studies are complete, Adeola is a dedicated life-long learner. “I ensure I learn something new daily, making me better than the day before.”

GOVERNOR GENERAL’S ACADEMIC SILVER MEDAL SHANNON ROSS This year’s Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal recipient is Shannon Ross, a graduate from the Bachelor of Science program with a major in biology and a minor in psychology. After graduating in a class of thirty students in her hometown of Ponoka, Shannon was drawn to CUE for the small classes and strong sense of community. She played an active role in the CUE community, serving as a

peer coach and as the vice president of marketing for the Concordia Science Union. “As someone who started university quite shy, these roles helped me come out of my shell and contributed to me leaving university as a more confident, outgoing individual.” Shannon says she was always a “big science kid” growing up. After volunteering in a hospital in high school, Shannon knew she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare.

Her goal is to become a physician and she is currently applying to medical school. As she enters the next chapter, Shannon has some advice for current students: “Remember to take care of yourself. As a student, it is often too easy to sacrifice your well-being in the name of academic achievement,” she says. “Surround yourself with people who support you and help you to be healthy.” 37
