Butterfly Garden K2 Field Trip
On January 27th and 29th, the K2 students waved goodbye to their moms and dads and, for the very first time, boarded a bus for their inaugural Concordian field trip. Their destination was Chatuchak Park, home to the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium.
As part of their third Unit of Inquiry, “Sharing the Planet,” the K2 students study bugs and insects, including their life cycles and the important roles they play in our world. The Butterfly Garden offers a unique opportunity for students to see these life cycles up close. Children were able to observe eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalises, gently hold leaves containing different stages of development, and even release newly emerged butterflies into their garden habitat. They also explored the park to discover insects living in their natural environments, all under careful supervision.
The day began with a cool pleasant walk from the bus drop‑off point to their field trip destination. Students enjoyed an outdoor snack on the park benches before entering the Butterfly Garden for their presentation. After watching a short video about the connection between humans and the natural world, a butterfly expert guided them through each stage of the butterfly life cycle. Students observed every detail up close, and many courageous volunteers even held butterflies at various stages of development. They then released newly hatched butterflies into the garden before heading out to explore the surrounding area in search of more insects.
Following their exploration, the students enjoyed a relaxing outdoor lunch before boarding the bus back to Concordian. The ride home was noticeably quieter, evidence of a full and exciting day.
This memorable experience marked the first of many field trips the students will enjoy throughout their years at Concordian. Not only did they learn about butterflies and their life cycles, but they also discovered the joy of learning outside the classroom and sharing new adventures with their classmates and teachers.
