NOTE Dear Impact Reader,

It is a great pleasure and an honour for me to address you in this 32nd issue of Impact Magazine. Since taking over my role from Ms. Megan just over five months ago, I have felt welcomed and supported by the Concordian community, and incredibly proud to be a part of it.

In this issue, we re-introduce some of our management team in their new roles: Ms. Ariel and Mr. Tim are taking over as Elementary Principals, while Ms. Sally, Ms. Min and Mr. Bill commence their tenure as Secondary Principals; the esteemed Dr. Tresa continues in her role as Director of College Counseling, DP Counselor and Emotional Counseling Advisor.

We take a look at some of the events that took place at the end of our previous academic year, such as the PYP Exhibition, Grade 5 Art Exhibition and Chinese Language Festival, as well as what activities have been happening over the summer with some of our student clubs. We also examine the online learning provision at the Elementary School and some of the campus facilities upgrades that too place over the summer. On the Secondary side, we learn more about what’s in store for our students’ service projects this year.

Compassion is a central pillar of Concordian's mission and vision and this extends beyond our student body. In this issue, we also find out more about donations made by our PTA as well as by our school staff. Some of our lovely Concordian families have provided testimonials about their experiences at the school and we will proudly feature them in this issue as well as the upcoming issues this academic year. We also share the Hello Magazine interview with Khun Varnnee, our Founding Director, and Mr. Laurent, Head of School. Finally, we meet the 24 talented and dedicated professionals who have joined us this year as new Concordians in their roles as teachers and teaching assistants.

On a final note, we have learned the true meaning of resilience in the past year and a half, and Concordian as a school has set a worthy example on how to maintain composure and persevere in the face of ever-changing circumstances. Our recent campus reopening has been executed with precision and attention to detail, taking every precaution to keep the safety and well-being of our community as our central focus.

Message from Our 20 Inspirational Years:

First of all, I would like to say that I am so grateful to every parent, every student who

has trusted in what drives Concordian from day one. I am grateful to all who started out with me, and those who are joining along the way and standing strong as important pillars supporting Concordian’s Mission and Vision today.

So has my mission in the past 20 years changed?

Let us look at Concordian’s original mission statement from 20 years ago, when the school was founded vs. today’s mission statement with the vision statement, what are the differences?

Old mission statement: Concordian International School promotes academic excellence while nurturing young people to become responsible, moral and intellectual leaders, people of dignity, integrity and compassion, who want to make a difference in the world.

Mission: Concordian fosters academic excellence while nurturing moral and responsible young leaders with dignity, integrity, and compassion, who want to make a difference in the world.

Vision: Concordians will be compassionate, moral and visionary leaders who strive for excellence.

To me personally, my mission has not changed: an updated vision statement only makes all of us see more clearly what we want to achieve. One of the most important discoveries over the past 20 years is that this mission could be most achievable only when our parents also have belief in the same vision, so that together with our committed and caring administrators, teachers, assistants and all staff, we could achieve our mission through our students.

I did not found Concordian International School to be just another school. I founded this school in the hope of fostering a type of World Citizen. The kind that is courageous, compassionate and responsible.

An inspirational leader who perseveres and works toward a positive change in humanity.

Although the world is going through a disruptive change in society, economics and technology, we are ready to face the new reality. An example is the global move towards the use of AI, however, I believe that AI will never replace human compassion and integrity. We will prepare the next generation of leaders to not only use AI efficiently, but also ethically.

Everything else changes in our environment and many things become obsolete, but the kind of leaders Concordian continues to foster are very much needed and will never be obsolete. We will always progress and adapt to our ever changing world and work hard to achieve and sustain our mission.

Thank you all for the past 20 Inspirational Years, and welcome all to join on Concordian’s journey into the most disruptive, yet most opportunitative years to come.

Welcome Back from Our

Head of School Dear Concordian community,

Welcome back to another school year!

We would like to express our gratitude for your continued support and cooperation during the ongoing Covid-19 situation. We recognize the tremendous amount of challenges that the current crisis has brought to our community and we believe that, as a school, we must continue to focus on what we do best -- providing a cutting-edge education in a safe and secure environment.

After consultations with the Samut Prakan Health Department, the school made the decision to reopen in a phase-by-phase hybrid format, allowing us to open in stages. The decision was not taken lightly as the health and safety of our students remain our top priority. All policies and reopening procedures were developed keeping one main goal in sight: making sure our students are able to return to campus in the safest way possible.

Even though the Concordian Online Learning program has provided excellent opportunities for ongoing education, we firmly believe that on-site education, including the current hybrid format, truly offers the most balanced approach in terms of the social and academic needs of our students and the safety of our community.

We understand that some families have personal reasons that may make on-site learning difficult at this time, and we can assure you that the school has put in place programs that address the needs of all of the students within the IB framework and strict Child protection guidelines.

Our promise to the community is to continue to evaluate the situation on a daily basis, to adapt and stay flexible regarding all upcoming challenges and to keep the safety of our students at the top of our agenda. Finding the right balance between safety and educational needs is not an easy task, but it is what our teams are focusing their attention on, and will continue to do so for as long as necessary.

Meet the Concordian PTA President and

1. Please introduce yourself and your link to Concordian.

My name is Gilbert Lim and I am the Executive Vice-President of Sahamongkolfilm International. I am currently the President of the Concordian Parents and Teachers Association. My only daughter is a student in Grade 5 in Concordian.

2. Why is serving on the Board of Trustees important to you?

I take a very strong interest in the education of my child and as such have been extremely involved in Concordian's activities, both as a Class Parent but also as a member of the PTA. It was only natural for me to consider the board as an extension of my role in Concordian to help maintain and possibly improve the welfare of our community. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I feel that it is also very important to be representative of this part of our community.

3. What professional expertise do you bring to your role?

Having worked with people for a very long time and knowing what my strengths and weaknesses are, I am very good in my communication skills as well as management ability. I believe that as a leader one should be able to handle all situations and look for different solutions for each problem.

4. What makes Concordian's Mission and Vision powerful for you?

The Mission and Vision statements are our guiding light to show us our way and goals. We always refer to them when making a decision for the school.

5. What would you like the Concordian community to know about the Board of Trustees?

Many in the community may not realize what an important part the Board of Trustees is to the school. We help steer the school in the direction that is guided by the Mission and Vision and I hope that our community will acknowledge this and also be actively involved in helping build our school into one of the top schools in the world.

Elementary School Principal Management Team Dear Concordian Community,

A new school year is now upon us and I would like to welcome all of our new and returning students, parents and teachers!

The new school year definitely has a different start with online learning. Classrooms and hallways are beautifully decorated as usual, yet waiting for students with their joyful faces and laughter; students and teachers meet each other for the first time through a screen; old friends give virtual hugs; classroom essential agreements are created online...

As the world continues to navigate the Covid pandemic, we have all had to overcome challenges, adapt and innovate, and do everything we can to ensure that students can continue their learning. Thank you to all parents, students and teachers for your continuous support and effort to make the start of the year as smooth as it has been.

Adaptation shows the ability to make changes and innovation results from the spirit to create. These are two important qualities to have. Concordian has experienced short-term school closures many times due to various crises in the past years such

as floods, landfill smoke, PM2.5, etc., but we’ve never had a closure as long as this one due to Covid. Without the ability to adapt and the mindset to innovate, we would not have been able to conduct a successful online learning for this long.

Concordian has always been a family for me. I am entering my 17th year working at Concordian this year. I started my journey here as an Early Years teacher. It was an absolutely heartfelt moment to witness my first year kindergarten students graduate from our school 2 years ago. I also worked as a Grade 1 homeroom teacher for more than ten years. I have been the Head of Chinese since 2008 and became PYP Vice Principal of Teaching and Learning in 2018. This year, I am very honored to take the role of Elementary School Principal, overseeing the overall academic curriculum and teaching & learning in the PYP. My Concordian journey of course has been full of adaptations and innovations. With the support of a team of professional educators, every step I take and everything I do is and will continue to ensure we are doing the best we can to bring our mission and vision statements to life.

Students, this new academic year may bring you new challenges and opportunities. I hope you will be confident to overcome the challenges and seize the opportunities to adapt and to innovate.

Group Zoom Sessions (mandatory) are provided daily to increase the interaction between teachers and students, to build rapport and to foster relationships. They are arranged in small groups in order to promote and reinforce student’s oral language development and for teachers to facilitate effective discussion and sharing among students. Q&A Zoom sessions (optional) allow primary students to take agency to clarify questions of their task completion.

At Concordian we care about the needs of all learners whether during on-campus learning or online learning. We continue to provide language support (ELS, CLS, TLS) as well as learning inclusion support to students daily through individual Zoom sessions. Our guidance counselors continue to work with students through a few check-ins and individual Zoom sessions every week to ensure social and emotional wellbeing of the students.

We use both Seesaw and Zoom as platforms to conduct online learning. Every morning learning assignments are posted on Seesaw including unit of inquiry learning, Chinese/ English/Thai language learning, Mathematics learning and Single subject lessons of the day such as PE, Music, Visual Arts and ICT. A summary of daily tasks are be sent to students and parents by 8am via Seesaw Announcement to help students self check and become responsible learners to complete all assignments.

Communication is always the key to everything. Everyday teachers communicate with students through ongoing feedback and feedforward to their submitted work on Seesaw; teachers collaborate among grade level teams in terms of daily planning and lesson preparation; coordinators check daily assignments to acknowledge teachers’ diligence and endeavor as well as to provide direction for further improvement; parents and teachers reach out to each other and work together to ensure the best learning result of their child(ren).

Every learning assignment posted on Seesaw contains a teaching video for students to watch and a task to complete afterwards. The teaching video delivers curriculum content. It teaches, reviews a concept or models a skill through various examples. Sometimes it also goes through a step-by-step demonstration of how to complete a task in order to reinforce curriculum content. Our professional and talented teachers strive to provide the best quality teaching videos, not just to deliver teaching content clearly, but also to promote deep understanding and critical thinking. They utilize dramatic acting, creativity and technology effectively to attract students' interests and attention, which is extremely important for young learners.

"It takes a village to raise a child" is an African proverb that means that an entire community of people must provide for and interact positively with children for those children to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment. This indeed seems to be especially true during the pandemic period with online learning. We are incredibly grateful to our teachers, our parents and the whole community for everything you have done to ensure the learning continues for our children and we truly appreciate your continuous trust in Concordian. It is worth celebrating our accomplishments in making Concordian the extraordinary learning community that it is.

Elementary Principal Management Team Dear Concordian Community,

W elcome Back! I hope everyone has had a

wonderful summer break despite the current circumstances we have all been going through.

I also hope everyone is now relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new school year.

By this October, I would have completed my 20th year here at Concordian. I could not have imagined spending these wonderful 20 years anywhere else other than right here at Concordian! I am honored to also have my new role this school year as one of the Elementary School Principals. I look forward to what lies ahead this academic year and also look forward to having many opportunities of meeting all of the wonderful families of our Concordian community. I am delighted that you are part of our wonderful learning community. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and look forward to working with you and your children this academic year.

Facilities Update If you drove past the school this summer, you may have noticed numerous maintenance and construction projects. First, we added two new parking lot areas to better meet the needs of our growing student population and to make parking as convenient for our community as possible.

Having additional parking should help with the traffic flow and also help with removing some of the traffic congestion once the school reopens.

In addition the PYP Dome area has had the floor completely redone and the floor is padded once again to ensure the safety of our students as they enjoy participating in their physical activities.

The PY Playground has also been expanded, adding a new exciting piece of play equipment for our PY students. The students love to climb and this new piece of equipment will provide them with a fun climbing experience. There are also swings included which the students will enjoy.

The new stainless steel fencing also looks so much better and helps to make the play area much safer for our students.

These are just a few of the many construction projects and additions that have been completed around the school. The campus truly looks amazing!

March 26th, 2021

Back in the month of March, the Student Council (STUCO) team

launched an event called “Earth Day – Art and Design Contest.”

Earth day is a day that reminds us to continue to do the little things such as turning off the lights, planting trees, recycling, reducing, and reusing to help protect and save our environment.

During this event, the STUCO team asked all participants to create a piece of art or design an invention using recycled goods. We invited our most beloved PYP Art Teacher Ms. Lisa and MYP Art Teacher Ms. Katarina to be our judges for this event. This contest was judged according to the rubrics created

by STUCO Team.

The STUCO team started to promote the event on March 26 by making announcements on flag-raising morning.

Many students were really excited and could not wait to participate in this event. The STUCO team received 28 pieces of amazing artwork from 28 participants throughout the whole PY community. The art work submitted was very creative and fun. It was clear that the participants truly put a lot of effort into creating their submissions.

Unfortunately, due to online learning taking place from April until the last day of school, the STUCO team weren’t able to celebrate the event properly. However, STUCO advisors have created a video showcasing and acknowledging all participants and their hard work towards this event. The PYP Exhibition is an opportunity for students to showcase

WEEK 2: WRITING THE CENTRAL IDEA AND LINES OF INQUIRY - Students were matched up with like minded students to explore further into their topics of interest. They wrote central ideas and lines of inquiry. They also made Action Plans which they would work on over the course of the unit. In this week, students were assigned mentors which they would organise to have weekly meetings with. Mentors are staff members who offer support and guidance to the students in their groups.

It is not just a small task that is done at the end of a 6-week unit, but a crosscurricular project that includes Learner Profile Attributes, Approaches to Learning and Key Concepts. The students at Concordian International School incorporate Chinese, Thai and English Language in the process of learning. They take meaningful Action and collaborate with their groups. The end result was a Zoom sharing and website, but leading up to that, there WEEK 3 - 5: LINES OF INQUIRY RESEARCH - Each week the were a whole lot of twists and turns. students became experts on each of their 3 lines of inquiry. They WEEK 1: UNPACKING THE THEME - The students started by wrote research questions and gathered information. At the end being introduced to the transdisciplinary theme, How We of each week, they gave mini presentations about their lines of Express Ourselves. They delved into the meaning of this theme and inquiry. As well as researching, they also worked on their Action selected topics of interest that were related to How We Express Plan, wrote songs related to their topic, created a movement to Ourselves. They set up their digital process journal using Google express themselves and made a video trailer.

Slides and explored Learner Profile attributes, Key Concepts and Approaches to Learning. On top of this, they wrote essential WEEK 6: THE SCRIPTS - This was the week where the students organised their 5 weeks of research into scripts for 20 agreements for the 8 week journey. minute speeches. This was a challenging task as groups had over 100 slides to convert to a 20 minute speech. The students were amazed with how much work they had built up in their process journals over the 6 weeks. All scripts were complete and everyone was ready to spend the next two weeks practising their speeches, until we had a spanner in the works.

WEEK 7-8: SPANNER IN THE WORKS: an event, person, or thing that prevents the smooth or successful implemetation of a plan; a drawback or impediment. Our spanner in the works was a school lockdown due to Government regulations regarding Covid. The live presentations ended up being Zoom Presentations. Although it was disappointing to not be able to present to a full house in the Grand Theatre, we all learned how to deal with unexpected changes that were out of our control. The resilience from all involved was amazing.

We are so proud of the achievements from all the groups. Over the course of the 8 weeks, the students clearly demonstrated that they are definitely ready for the MYP. They were able to overcome so many challenges along the way to produce an amazing website.

The students grew so much during the 8 weeks. There were many hurdles, but each person jumped over every hurdle like they were running in the Olympic Final. This Exhibition will be one that the students will never forget.

I t was 6 years ago when I met the graduating Grade 5 class of 2021. As their PYP Visual Art teacher all that time, I was very fortunate to share their journey and process as developing young artists. At the culmination of their art career, Grade 5 students created an art piece representative of what they learned in art throughout their time in the PYP.

Through this publication we celebrate their learning and recognize their talent in these drawings of portraiture, identity and selfexpression. Students applied a variety of drawing and shading techniques demonstrating their technical skill alongside a conceptual representation of themselves.

Meet Our

Secondary Principals & Director of College Counseling - Management Team Dear Concordian Community,

Starting the school year online was a big challenge for all and it wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without the collective effort from everyone in the community. This is my first year in the new role of Secondary Principal and, as always, I have been so touched to witness how Concordians excel in innovative ways when facing seemingly insurmountable restrictions.

The unique attributes and qualities of Concordians manifest through how we respond and take action in this unprecedented context. We develop transferable understand-

With the powerful tools and service minds, many of us have been working as active change agents, ensuring that we hold each other accountable and continue to have engaging and meaningful learning experiences, whether it’s online or on campus. Some of us have also been reaching out to support friends, families and communities that are less fortunate as we navigate together through this constantly changing time.

The pandemic has made it more evident and pressing that we need to step out of our comfort zone to embrace change at all times, not only to survive but also to adapt and thrive. As I Ching illustrates, any circumstance hitting a limit will begin to change.

Welcome to the 21/22 School Year. Although we started off the year with online

learning, we were fortunate to be able to transition to a Hybrid teaching model.

While implementing this model posed many challenges for the day-to-day operations of the school and created a lot of extra work for our teachers, we felt it was worth it to have our students back on campus for their social and emotional wellbeing, as well as receiving academic support that just can’t be done online. It also hopefully means that we are on our way to being able to have our students on campus full time.

As the safety of our community is always a top priority, we worked with hospitals, government health officials, local governments, and other schools to ensure we exceeded the safety procedures mandated by our national and local governments to restrict the spread of Covid-19. We also registered with the MOE and CCSA so community members had access to vaccines as they became available. Plus, we provided ATK test kits on a weekly basis to our staff and students to help ensure that everyone on campus is Covid-free.

Even though we are starting the school year online, it is still nice being able to connect and work with you this year. I know these past two years have proved challenging, yet our students have stepped up to meet those challenges successfully. Our recent Graduates received many offers to universities around the world. They headed off to 10 different countries, studying in more than 14 different programs. For a small class of 33 that says so much about Concordian International School and the opportunities available to every student. Yet those opportunities require diligence and hard work.

Recently, reading an article on Cornell’s web page, it talks about how to be academically successful. I would like to share a few of those tips with you, as a way to start our school year. The first tip talks about attending class as the essential step for success. Why? It points to a commitment to learn, which leads into several other tips, of being serious about academic work and showing a willingness to put in the effort and time to learn. Yet, also enjoying that experience and viewing it as an opportunity. There is a future waiting, so grab hold of the opportunities. One tip, I really like, talks about students taking themselves seriously as a student. Not just any student, but a Concordian student. Recognizing that as a student, there are certain expectations and responsibilities that come with the title and also being proud to be called a Concordian student. Each year our seniors graduate and go to university with a 100% success rate. Our Alumni have studied at many great schools around the world and later, they have entered the workforce as successful young employees, while some have even started their own businesses, as entrepreneurs. So being a Concordian student carries many positive connotations.

We have a great team of support for students to be successful ranging from teachers, assistants, counselors, language and learning support and the Administration itself. Indirectly, she has been helping us for many years, but I think for her to officially list this as part of her title, clearly indicates how much students are valued at Concordian. Dear Concordian Community,

It is with such great appreciation that we said our farewell and “Happy Retirement”

to Dr. James Leung at the end of last academic year. The ceremony was small and limited to our faculty and staff but did represent how much we owe to Dr. James in terms of Concordian’s tremendous success!

Even though Dr. James will stay on as our consultant, it was an emotional time to see our beloved High School Principal and DP Coordinator saying his goodbye to the community after 14-years of outstanding commitment to the school.

Dr. James came to Concordian in 2007 and helped build our amazingly successful DP program! He worked tirelessly with 12 graduating classes to prepare them for the prestigious IB Diploma. Alongside Dr. Tresa, our Director of College Counseling, our students’ future has been brighter than ever, and all of them have attended or are now attending outstanding universities around the world.

There is no doubt that the school would not have been as successful as it is now without the help, guidance, experience, and wisdom of our Dr. James!

Mr. Markus Mattila, DP Coordinator Impact: Please tell us about yourself.

Markus Mattila: Hello everyone, my name is Markus Mattila and I come from the lovely city of Helsinki in Finland. As a teenager I used to spend most of my time playing football, until an injury from a slide-tackle forced me to stay away from the field. Since I couldn’t play football anymore, I suddenly had a lot of extra time on my hands. I used much of this newly-gained spare time to explore both Math and Physics. This later led me to study Theoretical Physics (B.Sc.) and Physics Education (M.Ed.) at University of Helsinki. After teaching in Finland for a while, I decided to pursue a career internationally which eventually brought me here to Thailand. It’s funny to think about the impact of the little things in life. Had the outcome of that slide-tackle been different for the 17-year-old me, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today – teaching at Concordian.

Impact: Why did you choose Thailand for your international career and what are some aspects that you enjoy most about living here?

Markus Mattila: During my tertiary education I did a six-month-long exchange program in Bangkok at Kasetsart University.

During this time, I got to know the city, the culture, and the people a bit better.

This was over 10 years ago and I still appreciate the wide variety that Bangkok has to offer. Nowadays, the aspects I appreciate the most are the general ease of living, the regular daytime period of 12 hours, and the people.

Even though Finland is far away, you’d be surprised how similar Finns and Thais are in some aspects!

Impact: How has being at Concordian made you a better person and a better teacher?

Markus Mattila: At Concordian, I’ve had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of courses and the school has always been very generous with professional development. For this I’m very grateful. I’m surrounded by terrific colleagues from different backgrounds, all experts in their own fields. Learning from them has benefitted me a lot. There is great support for the teachers from both staff and admin. We are trusted to try new strategies in our classes to see what works and what doesn’t. Success can only come through a series of failures and allowing teachers this freedom to develop their classes is important.

Impact: Please share some insights about Concordian’s DP results this year.

Markus Mattila: Concordian's DP results were outstanding this year, as usual. As no exams were taken in Thailand in 2021, the scores were based on a mix of predicted grades and components that were externally marked by the IB. The world average this year landed at around 33 points, while Concordian scored way above the world average with 37 points.

This is very much in line with previous years as Concordian has always been ahead of the world average by several points even though we have a nonselective DP programme.* Furthermore, we had excellent TOK results and our EE results were also very good. * In a non-selective programme, all students are encouraged to take the full IB DP ccourse load and examinations.

Outstanding Results from the 1st International Chinese Language Festival 2020/2021 The first International Chinese Festival 2020/2021 was an online inter-

national Chinese competition organized by ESF Hong Kong, Education University of Hong Kong and China International Education; and coorganized by schools and education organizations worldwide. The competition was divided into two main groups: native and non-native groups. Participants’ entries could be submitted in various forms including writing, calligraphy, Chinese painting, singing, storytelling, etc.

3621 contestants from 450 schools all over the world participated in this competition. Concordian, as one of the co-organizers, sent a total of 55 secondary school students to participate and out of which, 33 students won prizes, including 7 champions, 2 runners-up, 10 third-placers and 14 certificate winners. Concordian International School has also been awarded the overall Outstanding Participation Award.

Melody G9: I am so glad to receive this award. I still remember the day I sent the first draft to the teacher.

It was already very late in the night, but the teacher quickly gave me suggestions for revision. Finally, I received the runner-up certificate of writing. This activity made me interested in writing, and I hope I will have the opportunity to participate in such competitions in the future. I am very thankful to be chosen for the award! 这次活动让我对写作产生了兴 趣，希望以后还能有机会参加。真的非常 感谢，也非常荣幸获得这个奖项！！ Anna G11: I was ecstatic when I heard that I got first place in the Chinese calligraphy competition. It was great practice for me and we had lots of fun doing it in the class. I want to thank all the Chinese teachers for guiding me through this process. It was a wonderful experience to be able to compete amongst other international students and I encourage everyone to participate in further competitions!

Student Athletes were unable to play competitive sports this past season. Fortunately they followed suggestions from their Coach and continued a fitness plan at home. But even the most dedicated found their thoughts to be wandering to another time and place. IMPACT provided this opportunity to let them “let their frustrations out”.

What I miss most about not being able to play is the satisfaction of being able to work and overcome an obstacle, whether during practice or in a match, together with my team.

What I miss the most about not having a season is playing with my teammates.

Not having that fun is getting to me.

When people ask me what I miss most about playing soccer, but that's just it. The fact that I was not able to play soccer at school and against other schools was very sad and disappointing. When you don't play soccer competitively against other schools, you get to meet other kids from other schools, but you also get to go all out and not worrying about anything else.

Playing soccer and winning or beating another school feels very rewarding after all the practices you have gone through, which makes it sad that there were no games that could be played. Lets hope for a better year and having more chances to play soccer and other sports too.

March, 2021 The pandemic has separated us athletes for many months, during those periods of isolation what I miss the most is the energy of the team. The varsity basketball team is extremely competitive and outgoing, we would often challenge each other in everything, whether it's shooting, ball handling, and so forth. Due to the positive energy and vibes that we get from one another, we were able to excel in team practice as well as in actual basketball matches. Therefore, for this reason, I miss the energy and the guys in our team the most, although I have a hoop at home where I can practice alone, nothing can be compared to the experience you get when coming together as one big team.

Khim What I miss the most about not being able to go to tournaments is the competitive feeling I am looking for. It’s like sparring compared to a real fight in boxing, I really miss the feel of blood racing through my veins and fire burning inside me when I compete in tournaments!

Back Dear Concordians!

Welcome back to school from your Middle School Student Government (MSSG). We

would like to extend this welcoming message to teachers new and old, to new and returning students, to our parents, and to the many non-teaching staff that help keep our school a special place.

Starting the school year 2021/22 online presents unique challenges, but it also presents opportunities as well. To help you adjust to this temporary situation the MSSG would like to suggest you try some of the following strategies: • Treat the lessons as though they were in school. This will help with focus.

• Be on top of your emails. We know there are a lot, but they keep you informed.

• Read Khun Poon’s daily email.

• Try to work sitting at a desk in a well lit room.

• Get things done on time! It’s the number one stress reliever.

• Ask your teachers if you need any help.

• Reduce screen time whenever possible (we know it’s hard to do!)

For our new 6th grade class, we know you will find middle school quite scary at first, but you will settle in over time as you adjust to the changes. Remember to be good to yourselves and allow some time to relax. This applies to anyone else reading this message! When we do get back into the building we will all have to readjust again, so everyone will be dealing with similar challenges, like those tricky locks for the lockers.

But hey! You’ll get used to them after a month or two, we promise!

Once we’re back in school we look forward to organizing events for you to enjoy. One of the things we would really like to do is to make the house system more interesting and meaningful for everyone. The MSSG officers and representatives will work with the middle school administration to achieve this goal. In the meantime we meet online, just like you do in your classes, to discuss such issues as: • Houses and house points.

• School policies about communication platforms.

• Fundraising events.

• Realistic quality of life adjustments, e.g. snack queues, and lanyard quality.

The High school Student Government members are happy and

honored to welcome you all back to what promises to be a great school year. We want to extend a hearty welcome to the newest members of our high school community, both students and instructors, as they will undeniably contribute to the overall quality of our school community. Although academics are undoubtedly at the heart of Concordian's tough curriculum, the quality of our student body's high school experience is also extremely important and the HSSG exists to improve just that.

Whether that be by organizing fun and interactive activities, or being the voice for students who want improvements to be made to the school, we are excited and enthusiastic for this upcoming year.

Concordian offers a wide range of sports, service clubs, extracurricular activities, and other activities. These opportunities promote leadership skills and assist students to prepare to become future adults who will make a difference in the world.

With this in mind, the HSSG along with our student coordinators took charge of the club fair, ensuring that all students can join clubs they are interested in.

A large part of class spirit is shown through our “Class Competitions”. In our previous years, these competitions include eating competitions, athletic games, trivia, and many more. With that said, we have no plans of abandoning our fun during online learning, and “Class Competitions” will still take place online. Some activities we have planned include online game tournaments, online jeopardy, Kahoot, etc. We hope students and teachers will be just as excited as us to participate in the activities we have planned.

Starting the academic year online has placed students and teachers in an unfamiliar

situation, facing new challenges, and the MYP Service Program is no exception. With COVID restrictions in place, getting into needy communities to provide meaningful, direct service will continue to be difficult, but our passionate and creative service leaders are ready to inspire our students to make a difference regardless of the challenges ahead. Each service leader will give a snapshot of what the year ahead holds for each grade of the MYP The MYP Service Program consists of Grade 6 and 7 completing mini-projects across a two-year program, Grade 8 being introduced to long-term projects with the Community Project, Grade 9 furthering their visions with Individual Service Projects, and Grade 10 continuing their service journey and preparing for CAS. Mr. Ben – MYP Service Learning Coordinator Grade 6 Service Program We have an exciting year ahead for Grade 6 student service. This year the students will be introduced to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and our Concordian Service Areas (CSAs). Students will learn about the importance of the SDGs and expand their knowledge on these world-impacting goals. In small teams, students will discover connections between their interests and service areas that they believe require immediate action and create projects of their own. It is time for students to put on their critical thinking caps, research, plan, and design well thought out mini-projects with their fellow team members. G6 service presents students with the opportunity to harness their innovative mindset and use their creativity to give back to our world.

Grade 7 Service Program Continuing on from their experiences in Grade 6, this year's Grade 7 students look forward to opportunities to cultivate both previous service projects and new ones.

Students will work collaboratively to develop innovative ways to contribute to the SDGs and CSAs, and each individual will work towards completing three total projects throughout the school year. They should expect a year of researching and executing creative service projects, while also building on ideas from previous projects and groupmates.

While starting service online is sure to complicate how we’re able to implement service, we have the utmost confidence in our intelligent and talented group of students. With this current, adaptability is going to be key for our groups to be successful. We are confident that the grade 9s are up to the challenge however, and excited to see what new initiatives they will spearhead this year as part of Concordian’s Independent Service Learning.

As a new school year kicks off once again, so too does our grade 8 Community Project program. This project is centred around having students work in groups to find a need in their community and do as much as possible to meet that need in a sustainable way. Despite the challenges of the COVID pandemic, our students remain unfettered in their approach to helping to make the world a better place, one project at a time. For now, the grade 8 students are engaging in rigorous research activities to help find needs in their local communities, creating a goal and action plan to meet those needs, and then ultimately bringing their projects to life to serve others. Although we’ve started online, the students have already taken ownership of their projects and ideas and are eagerly preparing to put their plans into action.

We look forward to how these projects play out over the course of the academic year and hope that everyone will have a chance to come out and witness the progress for themselves at our Show and Tell and Community Project Exhibition events!

year starting online, and this has included finding a way of holding the annual Club Fair online. While the Club Fair itself won’t have been held in time for this issue’s printing, this year’s Club President meeting - also held online - can be seen in the pictures below, with representatives of the 33 continuing and new clubs present. All representatives were excited to continue their clubs’ work, or commence an exciting new endeavour.

Student Clubs Summer Activity

Several of our clubs were able to get out into the community over the summer break, and below is a snapshot of their activities.

Habitat for Humanity

Our

club is working with Habitat for Humanity Thailand to provide shelter, a basic human need, for those who are not as fortunate as well as to reduce the number of homeless in Thailand. Our goal last school year (2020-2021) was to raise 80,000 baht and attend 2 building sites in the suburbs.

Due to COVID-19, we were unable to attend the second building site near the end of the year. Therefore we focused more on raising funds and donating it to the H4H Thailand organization remotely. We are very proud of our club members who participated and helped raise over 250,000 baht, way over our initial goal.

Suphanburi Site (13 Sep, 2020) We attended a building site at Suphanburi on September 13, 2021 where half of our club members volunteered to help build a house. We arrived in the morning to help move the sand, mix cement, stack the bricks, etc; and all members were involved in every procedure. Even though it was an exhausting day, seeing the new homeowner’s gratitude made the hard work pay off.

the Grin Green club from taking action. Rather, our environmental club was able to support the fight against Covid-19. During the summer, the Grin Green club partnered with environmental organizations Less Plastic and You Turn to raise awareness in regards to recycling plastic to PPE suits for frontline workers. We made posters that were shared via social media, encouraging people outside our school community to participate in this event. The posters were in English and Thai and included the simple steps to participate in this campaign: sort, clean, and deliver your plastic recyclables to the nearest recycling station. We also had plastic recyclables from the plastic trash cans that we sorted while we were still in school. Those recyclables were also donated to the recycling company that turns plastic into PPE suits. The plastic wastes that most of us overlook are now valuable materials in this difficult time. Although we are an environmental club, not a medical club, we were still able to help fight the pandemic with a creative mind.

The items that were donated included masks, alcohol hand wash, equipment materials to prevent and stop the outbreak of COVID-19 and instant noodles to help those affected by the situation Samut Prakan Province.

the first day I visited the school 11 years ago, what impressed me the most was the IB Curriculum with a trilingual program at Concordian. The IB curriculum extends the freedom of learning, broadens the knowledge and gives these students the ability to adapt to the furious changes of the world. Being a trilingual student gives much more opportunity to our children.

We can observe the noticeable development of the language in our children.

Our 3 children are growing up with a unique character. They are confident but not aggressive. They are mature but humble and listen to other people. They are kind, good listeners and respect the rules. I believe that is taught by the school. Day by day, they are molded by Concordian’s mission and culture and that makes my children become who they are now.

We spend many hours at school. As our children are on sports teams, we are used to arriving at school at 6.00 AM. and leaving at 6.00 PM. We see the maids, gardeners and security guards who know our kids’ names and we feel very safe. Choosing the right school is like choosing a second home. There are many international schools in Thailand with different curricula and systems but Concordian gives our family more than that. At the end of the day, our kids tell us stories from school. Some stories are fun. Some are challenging and not easy to deal with but I have never heard them say that they did not want to go to school. This is the life we gave as a gift to our children.

Interview with Tyra Lerttanapaiboon‘s family When we chose the school for our child, we selected and did the research thoughtfully before finally applying to Concordian. Concordian is also our first choice because of the school’s values, trilingual education and IB program which is very unique. The 4 years our daughter Tyra has spent at Concordian so far did not disappoint us. Tyra loves to go to school and always comes back to tell us fun stories from her day at school. How do Concordian extracurricular activities make learning more fun? ที่จริงหลักสูตร IB เป็นหลักสูตรที่สนุกมาก มันเป็นวิธีที่มีรากฐานจากการ เรียนแบบสืบเสาะหาความรู้ หมายความว่าทุกอย่างที่เราสอนจะต้องมีความ เชื่อมโยงกับชีวิตของนักเรียนเอง ถ้าเรียนเลข และเอาแต่เรียนนับเลข เรียน คูณ หรือการเขียนกราฟ หากเด็กไม่เข้าใจก็ไม่สามารถนำ�ไปใช้ได้จริง ซึ่งนั่น คือเหตุผลหนึ่ง ดังนั้นหากเด็กอยากจะเล่นกีฬา อยากสนุก การที่เด็กเล่นกีฬา มันไม่ใช่แค่เล่นทีมกีฬา แต่มันคือการเรียนรู้นำ�้ ใจนักกีฬา รู้จักชนะบางครั้ง และชนะอย่างถ่อมตัว รู้จักแพ้และเรียนรู้จากมัน นอกจากนี้เรายังมีโรงละครขนาดใหญ่ เพราะเราอยากให้นักเรียนเราสามารถ แสดงออกได้อย่างไม่เขินอาย และดึงพรสวรรค์ของพวกเขาออกมา เราบอกนักเรียนของเราเสมอว่า เธอต้องบอกครูว่าอะไรคือความชอบของ เธอ เพราะเราสามารถช่วยคุณพัฒนาสิง่ ทีค ่ ณ ุ ชอบได้ หากคุณชอบกีฬา ดนตรี วิทยาศาสตร์ ศิลปะ เราจะสามารถช่วยให้นักเรียนทำ�ความฝันให้สำ�เร็จ เพราะสุดท้ายแล้ว เด็กจะเรียนรู้ดีที่สุดก็ต่อเมื่อพวกเขาชอบสิ่งที่เรียน
