G8 Take on the Big Science Competition

On May 13th, all Grade 8 students took part in this year’s Big Science Competition, an international online science challenge run by Australian Science Innovations. The competition is designed for students in Years 7 to 10 and encourages them to apply their scientific knowledge, critical-thinking skills and problem-solving abilities to real-world situations.

During the 50-minute competition, students completed a range of mixed-format questions connected to different areas of science, including biology, chemistry, physics, Earth science and environmental science. What makes the Big Science Competition especially valuable is that the questions are not simply about remembering facts. Instead, students are asked to think carefully, interpret information and use their understanding of science in meaningful and contemporary contexts.

Our Grade 8 students approached the challenge with enthusiasm, focus and dedication. It was wonderful to see them engaging so positively with the experience, showing curiosity and resilience as they worked through unfamiliar and thoughtprovoking questions. For many students, the competition provided an opportunity to see how science connects to the wider world and how scientific thinking can be used to solve problems beyond the classroom.

We are very proud of our Grade 8 students for taking part and representing our school with such commitment. Their participation reflects the growing enthusiasm for science in our school community and reminds us that science is not just a subject to be studied, but a way of questioning, exploring and understanding the world around us.
