The Castle Inn — Main Rd, West Lulworth, Wareham BH20 5RN

Concorde BGW carried out an extensive refurbishment of The Castle Inn after it joined the Butcombe Brewery collection of pubs in late 2017. The aim was to convert this Grade II listed building into a stylish destination pub with an extensive bar, new-look restaurant and 12 individually designed bedrooms.

As Concorde celebrates its 25th year anniversary, Director & Owner Guy Bostock reveals its new business identity and highlights the company’s commitment to developing new designs and innovations for hotels, pubs, bars, restaurants and commercial buildings throughout the UK. Congratulations on Concordes 25th year anniversary, what do you put its success down to?

Hard work, employing talented people who love working together, having great relationships with clients and a good set of core values. We’re focused on delivering successful projects both in terms of looks but also a project that provides massive capital or revenue returns, that’s really what has helped drive and build the business.

With 25 years under your belt, what’s new and how are you going to develop Concorde BGW further?

We recently won a contract with Enterprise Inns to look after their Midlands division as their partnering maintenance contractor and we now look after the needs of 600+ pubs and 4 Enterprise Inns. We have transformed the way we deliver repairs and maintenance with our new, dedicated maintenance offering which has become one of our core services.

Tell me more about the new Nottingham office and new Maintenance Service offering. How is this key to the growth of the business and future goals?

Maintenance services are key in creating a reoccurring revenue source, therefore it’s a vital part of our business’s growth strategy. It means we look after an area of a building for an agreed length of time which creates security of work for the business. Our current maintenance work allows us to get to know our client teams - we’re building relationships with clients to look after, develop and create more profitability in their estates whilst also maintaining them.

What are the aims or objectives of the business moving forward?

We want to continue to stay at the forefront of the design and development of key leisure spaces in the UK. We want to use our growing team, giving them more responsibility to take this mantle forward with us. The business has grown significantly in the last 25 years and we are now one of the main players in what we do, and we want to stay there! We want to be industry leaders creating a culture of excellence in interior design and building works by delivering revenue growth with our customers both for ourselves and for them.

Each of the bedrooms have an individual design with bright, contemporary fabrics and eye-catching feature walls. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with sizable en-suite bathrooms styled with contemporary fixtures and fittings and fashionable décor. Using timber headboards and hanging back pads to furnish the room combined with antique desks and bespoke lounge chairs has established their laid-back luxury style.

Standing proud in the centre of the pub is the newly refurbished bar created from salvaged wooden panelling.

The dining area is vast and furnished with traditional wooden seating, unusual bric-a-brac and paintings.

Exposed brick and wooden beams can be seen throughout the pub giving a nod to its 16th Century structural heritage.

What advice would you give to someone looking to refurbish their hotel?

The first piece of advice is why are you refurbishing it? You need to be very, very clear about why you’re doing what you’re doing and at the end of the day in any project the real focus has to be revenue. The project can be defensive in that you are protecting a revenue you already have, or it can also be a revenue enhancing project where you are looking for opportunities to grow your business, be it room stock, bigger bar, or development of your F&B offering. You have to be very focused on why you are doing your project and what’s going to deliver at the bottom line level to the business.

Sit & Sip — 2A Northgate, Chichester, PO19 1AR

Sit & Sip, an exciting new craft beer and artesian spirit bar has recently opened in Chichester offering a unique experience for people that want to enjoy and try a wide range of drinks in a sociable atmosphere. The opening marks the first bottle shop for the Sit & Sip team which Concorde BGW have successfully designed, built and furnished. Located in a new building block at the top of the high street with a residential development above, the 650sq ft tasting venue was a blank canvas waiting for Concorde to bring it to life.

The transformation of the venue included a new bar and shelving to cater for Sit & Sip’s delightful craft beer range, a new back of house area and a 28-cover seating area.

Bespoke, turquoise leather fixed and loose seating offsets the vintage wooden tables making a real funky statement.

The décor has been strongly influenced by the brands quirkiness and the trend for upcycling with lots of natural wooden cladding, metallic touches and reupholstered leather booths mixed with real wood

flooring and ‘thrift shop’ finds. The walls are decorated with a collection of canvases, pictures, wall art, mirrors, photo frames and customised artwork such as the ‘Beer Street’ and ‘Gin Lane’ signs created by Concorde’s branding team.

Throughout the bar the furniture and fittings create a stylish industrial feel with lots of quirky design features to look out for including the bars apron which is a bespoke mosaic tile with the Sit & Sip logo printed onto it. Adorning the exterior of the building with stylish wooden cladding, a fresh coat of paint and newly fitted large feature windows has added a sense of space and light creating a warm and welcoming feel inside.

Sit & Sip’s boutique bar gives customers the chance to discover new drinks from around the globe and with the popularity of craft beer and artesian spirits booming, it’s bound to be a roaring success. sitandsip.co.uk

The Lost & Found Cocktail Bars and Restaurants are a decadent den for all to escape the hustle and bustle. Each bar design is based on a Victorian personality that give The Lost & Found Venues such a strong sense of identity.

Bristol Lost & Found is themed around the adventures of a fictional character Elizabeth E. Lightfoot - a woman who sought to find meaning among the stars.

When designing the venue Concorde BGW ensured her personality was reflected in its style; snippets of her story are evident in everything from the menus where each cocktail links to a professor, to the walls where there are paintings of the characters and quotes displayed.

Concorde BGW’s furniture partner Revivalist made a variety of bespoke chairs and sofas to help create the bars individual style. Custom-built metal screens have been used to segregate the rooms and an attention-grabbing mural of the professor overlapped with a 3D astronomy map completes the venues mysterious styling. A magnificent planting installation consisting of hanging wisteria, a rose bush wall, oversized palm trees and a huge willow tree in the Secret Bar make the building particularly unique and beautiful.

The lighting is dark and moody because stargazing is best done away from city lights and the dark adaptation of the bar was important in creating the mysterious look and feel that the Lost & Found bars resonate. The building is deceptively deep and spacious with a large dining area beyond the long bar and an underground, marble-topped ‘secret’ bar built with the familiar antique brass detail and timber panelling. It is easy to see why this stunning bar, restaurant and underground secret hideaway, decorated and inspired by astronomy with a frivolous cocktail menu is a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds.

There are five Lost & Found sites currently but there are many more professors, and therefore the potential for many more Lost & Found venues.

We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep, but do we realise how much the interior of a room can impact this?

When it comes to a dream bedroom, the softness of the bed, the texture of the curtains, the warmth from the light, the fragrance from the scented accessories and so on, along with a beautiful view of a pool or a garden is what crosses everyone’s mind. These are the things that equate to a good night’s sleep and ultimately, they give people a reason to snap, tweet and share.

The bedrooms seen here were created by Concorde BGW and make people stop, think and take that shot! Each hotel’s personal brand has been reflected in the bedroom décor, from the colour palette choice to the tone of ceiling and flooring and the furniture selection. These are ‘Insta-ready’, chic hotel bedrooms that make peoples head turn, elevate their experience and gives them something to talk about.

The Dundas Arms — 53 Station Rd, Kintbury, Hungerford RG17 9UT The Dundas Arms is set in a picturesque location standing between the River Kennet and Avon Canal.

The makeover aimed to bring this Grade II Listed building bang up-to-date and to allow guests to enjoy the secluded riverside garden.

No expense was spared when updating the sizeable garden area - bespoke, plush, comfortable seating has been installed as well as restaurant panelling to segregate the outdoor dining areas and create more privacy for guests. The garden is now the perfect space for alfresco summer dining, drinking and celebrating.

An outdoor bar has been built to compliment the infamous internal bar whose surface is made up of 3,240 old pennies, the handiwork of a landlord who marked decimalisation in 1971.

Inside the Dundas Arms sit 8 comfortable bedrooms, 5 of which overlook the river and have their own private terrace. All the rooms have been decorated in a country house style using a grey and pastel colour palette and unique patterned wallpapers. Each room cleverly blends a selection of antique Victorian furniture and mid-century elements whilst boasting large ensuite bathrooms.

Concorde BGW had to design a space that allowed more control over client circulation, so a new main entrance lobby was built to create a greeting area with enough space for customers to initially gather.

The end result is a lovely country pub with a relaxed informal bar, good two-level restaurant a lovely waterside garden and comfortable bedrooms. dundasarms.co.uk

In conversation with…

Andrea Marković 3D Designer Concorde BGW We need to have vision and confidence when thinking about the future of a venue and the longevity of a design in the face of relentless competition in the leisure and hospitality industry.

Clients want to actually see how the refurbishment of their building will look especially when you’re making such an important and often expensive investment we believe that 3D visualisation and CGI for a photo-realistic rendering of buildings is vital.

Andrea Markovic´ leads the 3D visualisation process at Concorde, we caught up with her to talk about her role in the design process and to get her expert tips and advice on the best design strategies.

Q How would you describe your career so far?

A I moved to the UK just less than 6 months ago, before that I worked for 6 years in architectural studio in Prague, Czech Republic which I set up together with my brother.

Q Why did you decided to work with Concorde BGW? A Concorde BGW caught my attention for its portfolio full of conceptional, detail-focused and bold interior designs. I could see that each project was given special attention, was telling its own story. I wanted to be a part of this creative team and not a team that just recycles the same ideas time and again.

Q What would you like to change about the interior design industry, particularly in the leisure and hospitality industry?

A I like that in recent years it’s become very courageous in terms of interior design. I prefer it when a place tells a story and has a strong design concept which is reflected in everything from room layout to bric-a-brac. Some pubs and restaurants have missed out on this and consist of various design elements that go well together visually but don’t give the place a personality.

So this is exactly what I would change, I would ensure that all venues have a theme or concept that radiates their personality.

Q When is 3D design the most useful?

A Usually there are two major reasons for using a 3D design; for designers it’s in the early stages of designing to understand the size of the space available and to ensure what they have imagined is suitable. For clients it’s usually in the final stages of development, it helps translate designs into something they can understand, it also helps with stakeholder approval or to sell the product (attract, impress), for example in tenders.

Q What do clients value the most from your 3D designs?

A Being able to see and understand the whole design within seconds without any further explanation.

Q What is your design philosophy?

A Everything comes from functionality and a unified initial concept. If it works, it will look great as well, if you set a strong concept and follow it till the end, your design will tell a story better than a thousand words.

Once a 16th century Coaching Inn, The White Hart is a stunning Grade II listed building with a warm and inviting atmosphere, extensive restaurant, impressive bar, a central decked courtyard and two private dining rooms.

The White Hart G o d stone Green — 71 High St, Godstone RH9 8DU Concorde BGW meticulously renovated the Inn whilst maintaining standout original period features. The building was stripped back to its bare bones revealing old pillars and beams and six fireplaces have been restored to full working order. At the heart of the pub is the bar which has been rebuilt and extended, connecting it to the lounge and restaurant. Drawing inspiration from the building’s heritage, traditional cheques and herringbone patterned fabrics with bright leathers and wools have been used to furnish the vast restaurant and surrounding areas, all adding to the overall country look and feel.

Outside there’s an enclosed and covered courtyard which has been refreshed with new furniture, lights, heating and a large circular table with a warming gas firepit at it’s centre. An old storage

room, accessible from the courtyard has been converted into a garden room which can be closed off for private events and makes use of a previously underutilised space. Finally, the former coach house’s original front door has been renovated and reopened so customers can walk through the front of the pub into the internal courtyard.

The new look pub and restaurant truly fits in with Godstone, a traditional village brimming with character where you can enjoy a hearty meal in a beautiful countryside setting. With six fireplaces and loads of nooks and crannies to stow yourself away, this centuries-old Surrey pub is the perfect place to hide from the ice and snow. thewhitehartongodstonegreen.com
