Welcome Welcome to Meet Bahrain 2018, your essential destination and meeting guide

With a long and successful history as a global trading nation, the Kingdom of Bahrain has always offered a warm and open welcome to international visitors and businesses. The GCC is undergoing a significant economic transformation, and Bahrain was the first country in the region to begin its diversification decades ago. We continue to diversify our tourism sector, building on our value proposition and expanding our offerings. Tourism and international trade have been consistent cornerstones in the Kingdom’s economic diversification strategy, marking the country as a key global destination. Over 12 million tourists visited the Kingdom in 2017, fuelling a thriving tourism industry around Bahrain’s wide range of four and five-star hotels and resorts. This ecosystem will be expanded further, sustained by over US$10 billion (BHD3.7 billion) of dedicated spending allocated to tourism and leisure, and over US$32 billion (BHD12 billion) in key infrastructure projects across the nation. Visitors to the country can take advantage of a thriving social calendar, with major international events including the Bahrain F1 Grand Prix and the Bahrain International Air Show. It is now even easier to visit Bahrain. Visas on arrival are available for citizens from 67 countries, e-visas are available for 114 nations, and thanks to a new national partnership with VFS Global, Gulf Air passengers can complete their visa applications online. Additionally, the Kingdom’s causeway provides a key link to Saudi Arabia, positioning the country as an ideal gateway to the Gulf, with efficient and reliable access to the region’s biggest market. Bahrain continues to be a major hub for international businesses in the region. In 2017, the Kingdom significantly enhanced Bahrain’s environment for businesses of all sizes. Noteworthy highlights included the announcement of the Middle East’s first Amazon Web Services ‘Region’, and the construction of Mondelez’s new manufacturing facility. We also announced the opening of Bahrain Fintech Bay, a collaborative space that will support and encourage the growth and development of local startups or allow global entrepreneurs to scale up their business. Companies from around the region and the world recognise the advantages of our supportive regulatory, financial and social environment and are choosing to establish their operations in Bahrain, with brands launched such as Careem, Five Guys, and Action Hotels going some way to creating more than 4,000 job opportunities in the country. The Kingdom is thriving, exciting, and ready for tourists and businesses alike. We look forward to welcoming you to our country. Khalid Al Rumaihi Chief Executive, Bahrain Economic Development Board

INSIGHT | INTRODUCTION

Kingdom on the rise Boasting the perfect mix of cultural sites, dramatic landscapes and a fast-paced modern city, Bahrain is emerging as one of the world’s must-visit destinations

Throughout history Bahrain has been a vibrant trading hub with the pearling industry playing an important role from as far back as the 3rd Century BC. The industry continues to thrive to this day as the Kingdom capitalises on its natural assets that range from miles of pristine coastline to great swathes of desert. Meanwhile, the capital Manama has grown into a futuristic, cosmopolitan city attracting thousands of visitors each year to its mix of five-star hotels, plush malls and international events such as the Formula 1

Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. However, modernisation has not come at the expense of the Kingdom’s rich history and special care and attention has been taken to ensure Bahrain’s cultural credentials are as much part of the offering as its gleaming modern side. Home to archaeological treasures, ancient cities and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, visitors will also find a thriving modern cultural scene with everything from live entertainment to theatre, classical music performances and world-class art exhibitions.

With so much to offer, it’s little wonder that each year, more and more business and leisure visitors flock to Bahrain. The Kingdom boasts a state-of-the-art aviation hub, Bahrain International Airport, which is currently undergoing a billion-dollar expansion plan to welcome the expected increases in visitor numbers. Once in the country, there is an impressive roster of hotels ready to welcome guests at any price point, while the vibrant dining scene showcases cuisines from all over the world

in a stunning selection of settings. For business visitors, there is ample opportunity to hold a meeting or event at any one of the stand-out venues here, from out-of-the-box options overlooking a race track, to beautiful al fresco venues by the beach. Leading the way is Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre which hosts an array of high-profile conferences and exhibitions each year. When it comes to incentive groups, the Kingdom’s enviable options make the most of the variety of settings, from desert challenges to adventures on the ocean. There are plenty of high-octane activities for groups at Bahrain International Circuit or look to the skies for an aerial spectacle during an outing at Bahrain International Airshow. Like many of its Gulf neighbours, Bahrain’s forward strategy is based on diversification away from traditional resources such as oil, favouring instead a growth in tourism. At the heart of the government’s Economic Vision 2030 road map is a plan to nurture the Kingdom’s burgeoning business tourism industry, which goes hand in hand with adding to the existing infrastructure to cater to the millions of visitors pouring into the country each year. A series of exciting

04

03

new developments are planned for the years ahead, with multi-million dollar projects such as Bahrain Marina promising to transform the capital, bringing luxury waterfront living, retail and dining to the heart of the city. Marassi Al Bahrain is another major project in the pipeline, a sprawling business and lifestyle destination on a two-kilometre stretch of the southern island shores of Diyar Al Muharraq. Around 4,000 new hotel rooms iareplanned in the coming years

Modernisation has not come at the expense of the Kingdom’s rich history marking an increase of 30 percent in hotel stock. Among the openings this year are Jumeirah Royal Saray, Wyndham Grand Bahrain Bay and The Grove Amwaj Island, while openings before 2020 include The Address Marassi Resort, Vida Marassi Resort, the Sahel Resort and Conference Centre, Hilton Bahrain Bay and DoubleTree Juffair. With such a flurry of exciting new development planned, Bahrain is perfectly placed to see its business and leisure tourism proposition soar.

INSIGHT | INTERVIEW

Honouring the past For H.E. Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, the rich cultural offering sets the Kingdom apart

As the landscape of Bahrain continually changes, and ultra-modern skyscrapers replace the once flat sands, it is clear that the Kingdom is firmly embracing the future. Yet what adds to the destination’s appeal, and helps set it apart, is the determination to highlight its rich heritage while nurturing a thriving contemporary culture. Throughout the Kingdom, visitors will discover historic homes and ancient settlements that provide a fascinating glimpse into the way life was once lived here. Tasked with maintaining that deep connection to times past, and with building an exciting future rooted in the

country’s heritage, is H.E. Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA). “Every city and village in Bahrain carries within it a beauty worthy of a visit and admiration,” she says. “The successive civilisations that have inhabited this land over many millennia have produced spaces that remain unspoiled by humans to this very day, standing tall as witnesses to the history of the island. For me, appreciating the many aspects of Bahrain and its rich culture is what makes the Kingdom special.”

An important year While there has long been a focus on emphasising the history and culture of Bahrain, this year takes on extra significance with Muharraq named the Capital of Islamic Culture 2018. The city served as Bahrain’s capital until 1932 when it was replaced by Manama, and it remains a place of great importance to the country. Offering a fascinating window to the past, Muharraq’s well-preserved monuments, architecture and heritage sites make it a historic treasure trove. With Muharraq firmly in the spotlight, numerous initiatives are underway to coincide with the special year. H.E. Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa says: “Muharraq served as Bahrain’s first capital and enjoys a very special and unique historic status; as it was the birthplace of many important figures who left an enduring imprint in the fields of culture, art and literature. “It also boasts a distinctive urban fabric and contains many heritage houses that belonged to important luminaries who shaped modern Bahrain. Important sites include Bu Maher Fort, the gateway to the Pearling Path. This path is set to be completed this year and will serve as an open-air museum showcasing the history of Muharraq during the important era when the pearling trade was the Kingdom’s most important source of income, before the discovery of oil. “A special tent has also been set up in the city to house an exciting line-up of annual events and activities, including the Bahrain Fine Arts Exhibition, Bahrain International Book Fair, Bahrain Heritage Festival and the Bahrain Summer Festival.”

“Investment in culture and heritage is an investment that lasts a lifetime, and, contrary to what some may believe, heritage and archaeological sites are what really attract visitors, not the facilities and shops around them” More to offer Understandably much of the focus for BACA in the upcoming months will be on promoting the special events taking place within Muharraq. But H.E. Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa is keen to point out that those seeking to explore the cultural side of Bahrain should not limit themselves to visiting just one city. The country is teeming with attractions from Riffa Fort in the south to Bahrain National Theatre in the north. “Despite its relatively small size, Bahrain boasts an abundance of sites and landmarks that keep visitors returning to our island,” she says. “Aside from Muharraq we have the Bahrain Fort and its dedicated museum, which was the first site in Bahrain

05

inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other important sites include the Bahrain National Museum, which offers trips by sea to Bu Maher Fort, and in the south we have Riffa Fort and the Tree of Life in Sakhir. “Investment in culture and heritage is an investment that lasts a lifetime, and, contrary to what some may believe, heritage and archaeological sites are what really attract visitors, not the facilities and shops around them.” Showing that Bahrain cares deeply about its history and culture is one of the important aspects of BACA’s varied remit and the organisation places great emphasis on proving this helps the country stand apart as a destination. Yet H.E. Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa believes much more can be done to promote the Kingdom. She says: “We genuinely believe in the power of the segment of society which exhibits a keen interest in culture, art, civilisation, and heritage to amplify our message and efforts. And we are on a promising track towards the future. “That said, I hope to see more of our planned culture-related projects move from the design to the implementation phase. And for us to witness completed structures for the world to acknowledge the many hidden treasures contained in the Land of Dilmun.”

MEET | DMC INTERVIEW

Hospitable hosts Destination Management Companies across Bahrain are showcasing just what the Kingdom has to offer to the rest of the world

01

Kyriako Zarkadas Founder & CEO, Visit Bahrain What are some of the standout aspects that make Bahrain unique? Bahrain is a land of marvelous contrasts. Whether we view it in terms of cultural heritage or in terms of geography, the Kingdom stands out as a beautiful combination of influences. Its most appealing characteristic is hinted straight from its name since Bahrain means the land of the two seas. Actually, it should say lands, since Bahrain consists of more than 30 islands. However, Bahraini people are the best thing about the Kingdom. So warm, welcoming and with such

big hearts. And even if they are deeply connected with their beliefs and culture, they are very accepting and open minded of other cultures as well. Bahrain is indeed a land of freedom. What would you say are some of the country’s hidden gems? Manama Souq is an absolute must visit. A walk through can become an exciting treasure hunt for traditional items and delicious Bahraini food. We actually recommend that all visitors grab a halwa and enjoy it while wandering through the Souq. The bazaar is a wonderland for unique jewellery, sweets, spices, pottery and numerous other hidden gems.

Can you tell us the top three sites, attractions, or experiences a visitor should not miss when in the Kingdom? When in Bahrain, visitors should try to sample something out of everything that Bahrain has to offer. That’s why we recommend them to first dive into the Kingdom’s history by visiting the Bahrain Fort, which was once the capital of the ancient Dilmun civilisation and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Next, a visit to the Bahrain International Circuit is also a must in order to gain a view into the present of Bahrain. The circuit offers loads of fun and activities for the whole family and is overall a state-ofthe-art facility, right in the middle of

the Shakir desert. The third thing visitors must try is pearl diving. Bahrain was widely renowned for having the best pearls in the world. Thus, ample efforts have been made to keep the tradition of pearl diving alive and preserve this memory. Today, tourists can enjoy a fun dive and, if they are very lucky, leave with a stunning pearl souvenir. It is truly a unique experience they cannot have anywhere else in the world. What does Bahrain have to offer business guests and incentive travel groups? Bahrain is up and ready for the challenge of meeting even the most

demanding requirements of business guests. First of all, it has numerous extremely well equipped and generously large conference rooms, the biggest of them being the Gulf Convention Centre, which can host up to 2,500 people. Secondly, Bahrain’s hotels are ready to offer their full support in organising and supplying these conferences, while business travellers can focus on what they came here to do. And thirdly, but most certainly not lastly, Bahrain is also rich in leisure activities and fantastic tours which can help business travellers and groups replenish their energy. What are some of the changes you predict in Bahrain’s tourism industry in the years to come? The trends are very clear regarding the changes we can predict in the near future. The tourism industry is definitely growing in Bahrain. Just have a look at all the development projects for hotels and restaurants. Also, the number of tourists is growing by the month thanks to the efforts and support of service providers, the government, and investors. Exciting times are coming and we’re glad to be among those who are opening the gates of Bahrain to the world.

Ramsumesh R Menon General Manager, GO Gosaibi Travel How did Go Gosaibi Travel get started? Based in Bahrain since 1954, it is the brainchild of the late Fahad Abdulrahman Algosaibi, the father of our present Chairman Fawaz Fahad Algosaibi. Over the last 64 years the company has evolved as a fully fledged travel service organisation specialising in corporate, leisure and online travel, as well as destination management services offering holistic travel related assistance in the region.

How can business visitors make the most of a trip to Bahrain? The island of Bahrain is known primarily for its small size and successful finance industry. Recently, thanks to intensified efforts by the Bahrain Economic Development Board and in coordination with various ministries, there are new opportunities being opened up for investments under the StartUp Bahrain Initiative programme and tourism is one of the major thrust areas.

05

06

What do you think sets Bahrain apart from some of the other destinations in the region? The most outstanding feature that sets Bahrain apart is its own people. Bahrainis are the most warm, humble and hospitable hosts in the region. This is primarily because it has a progressive and highly valued education system. The majority of the country, (95.7 percent) is literate and Bahrain also has the highest female literacy rate, (93.5 percent,) in the Arabian Peninsula. This is a very important factor for tourism. 07

05: Ramsumesh R Menon 06: Transport options from the DMC companies 07: Manama Souq

How do you see Bahrain’s tourism scene developing in the years to come? There are many initiatives being implemented along with the Economic Development Board to spruce up the infrastructure to attract more tourists to Bahrain. National carrier Gulf Air has announced a phased expansion running until 2023 with the addition of 39 new aircraft and new destinations across all the major continents. The swanky new Bahrain International Airport is also scheduled to open up in 2019, with the capacity increase from nine million to 14 million. Many multi-purpose tourism projects and attractions are also in the pipeline. A new International Convention Centre roughly expected to be 11 times larger than the existing one, with 14,000 square metres of exhibition space, is planned so Bahrain will be the new destination for business in the next two to three years.

INSIGHT | GETTING AROUND

Journey of discovery Travelling to Bahrain, and around the Kingdom, has never been simpler thanks to huge investment across land, sea and air

01

As Bahrain continues to diversify their economy and expand its blossoming tourism proposition, the country has placed great emphasis on increasing the number of visitors. This has led to huge investment in infrastructure as the country looks to promote its unique blend of stunning natural wonders, ancient attractions and gleaming modern developments. In fact the Bahrain Economic Development Board revealed late last year that a staggering US$13 billion (BHD4.8 billion) is being

spent on the country’s tourism infrastructure, with a host of exciting new projects already in development. At the heart of this investment is a commitment to overhaul the Kingdom’s transport network, making it easier than ever before for business and leisure tourists to experience this captivating Kingdom.

MAJOR EXPANSION Bahrain International Airport (BIA) has come a long way since its inception in

1927 when it was the very first airport in the Arabian Gulf. Now handling in excess of eight million passengers a year, Bahrain International Airport has become a hub with 67 percent of the world’s population within an eighthour flight of the Kingdom. There are also 300 million people within just two hours travel time of BIA, thus making it an important destination for a host of regional and international airlines. As well as being the home base of domestic airline Gulf Air, there are 32 passenger

18

and 15 cargo airlines that fly from BIA, including regional powerhouse carriers Emirates, Saudia and Etihad Airways, as well as international companies Cathay Pacific, British Airways, KLM, Air India, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. Located on Muharraq Island, and just a 15-minute drive from the centre of Manama, BIA has profited from Bahrain’s tourism push with the country receiving an increase in arrivals of 11.85 percent last year. With more visitors arriving each year, the airport is set to play an even bigger role when its expansion is completed in 2019. The US$1.1 billion (BHD414 million) project will increase the annual capacity of the airport to 14 million passengers. Once completed the main terminal will spread across 22,000 square metres, four times the size of the current airport, and will feature 24 passport control booths, 28 security

lanes and a 9,000 square metre dutyfree retail space. There will also be a significant upgrade to the facilities within the airport thanks to premiumclass lounges, food and beverage zones and an automated baggage handling system. Despite the scale of the expansion, according to Bahrain Airport

Company Chief Executive Mohammed Al Binfalah, the ambitious development could be completed as early as the second quarter of 2019. He says: “We are definitely on track as per our schedule and operating within our allocated funding of US$1.1 billion (BHD414 billion). The 2019 deadline will be met and we are busy on various fronts such as the construction of a fuel farm, a multi-storey car park, and have just completed the construction of the central utility complex that will feed power and water to the airport. “From both passenger experience and information technology aspects, we will be one of the most advanced airports in the region.”

The extensive airport expansion will also include a multi-storey car park that will be able to accommodate more than 3,500 vehicles, as well as a hotel for those travelling onto another destination beyond the Kingdom. Explaining more, Bahrain Airport Company Development Director Derek Hendry adds: “There will be a transit hotel for passengers who have long layovers with about 40 rooms designed to the best international standards. In addition, there will be a fully automated baggage control, self check-in kiosks and a premium Gulf Air lounge that will be three times bigger than the present facility.”

FLYING HIGH Formed in 1950 when it was the first official commercial airline in the Middle East, Gulf Air is now a major

contender on the region’s aviation scene, serving 42 cities in 25 countries spanning three continents. The airline also operates double daily flights or more to 10 regional cities, in addition to select destinations in the Indian subcontinent and Europe. It currently serves all its destinations with a fleet totalling 28 modern aircraft, but starting this year 39 new Boeing and Airbus aircrafts will arrive at the cost US$7 billion (BHD2.6 billion). This investment will include five Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and two Airbus A320Neos that will arrive before the end of the year. The hope is that the major investment in the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners will strengthen the prescence of Gulf Air across the globe. There is also a belief that it will serve to enhance the airline’s operational efficiency while also offering enhanced passenger comfort.

“Promoting the Kingdom of Bahrain as a many faceted tourist destination is key to Gulf Air’s long standing mission”

The 787s will have 26 business class seats and 256 economy seats and could signal the start of long haul growth for Gulf Air. Already it has announced two daily flights between Bahrain and London, which will commence from June 15 this year, while the delivery of a further 16 of the 787s will take place in the next six years. This could see the airline further extend its reach. Gulf Air has also recently launched a tourist visa service exclusively for passengers flying across its global

Gulf Air is a major contender on the region’s aviation scene, serving 42 cities in 25 countries spanning three continents network to Bahrain. This allows travellers with Gulf Air tickets to apply for a visa on a dedicated website. With the process speeded up with a much more streamlined system now in place, it is hoped that it will encourage more people travelling to the Kingdom to consider the airline. “Promoting the Kingdom of Bahrain as a multifaceted tourist destination is key to Gulf Air’s long standing mission,” comments Gulf Air Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Captain Waleed Abdul Hameed Al Alawi. “We are delighted to make the process of obtaining a visa to enter Bahrain easier and more convenient. We anticipate positive feedback

from our customers, for whom this service is tailored, and we look forward to welcoming more people from around the world to Bahrain to experience all the Kingdom has to offer.”

JOURNEY BY LAND AND SEA With the vast majority of people visiting Bahrain via land and sea, the Kingdom is looking to also significantly overhaul its transport system. There are already plans in place for a second causeway linking Bahrain with Saudi Arabia, which would include a motorway and rail lines in order to handle both freight and passengers.

07: Gulf Air

The two countries are also working together closely in order to increase the efficiency of King Fahd Causeway, with a planned expansion that will see the number of lanes double from 19 to 38. Meanwhile, in recognition of the major increases in cruise passenger traffic in and around the region, Mina Salman port has been opening up more capacity and in January Shaikh Khaled bin Humood Al Khalifa, Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), said that he expected the port to handle 33 ships, with almost 80,000 passengers this year.

Not only does the impressive building house an array of international and local businesses, but Sheraton Bahrain Hotel is also part of the complex. The five-star property has a wide variety of restaurant and leisure facilities, and is perfect for business visitors and planners thanks to 16 meeting rooms. An alluring city with a fascinating past, Muharraq is home to historic houses, ancient settlements and a picturesque shore filled with dhows 02

01

The former capital of Bahrain, Muharraq provides an intriguing glimpse into the rich history of the country. Strolling round the charming streets is a great way to discover the multitude of cultural centres and historic houses that help tell the story of this ancient city that has existed for thousands of years. Perhaps the best way to learn about the city, and the Kingdom’s past, is to visit the Pearling Trail, which has a 3.5 kilometre route past 17 historical buildings. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the pearl trade in Bahrain which at one time saw thousands of divers bravely search the ocean floor for the treasure. One of the first stops along the route, Bu Maher Fort, has a visitor centre which is a great place to start as there is an illustrated map of the trail and models of important places to look out for along the way. The Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research is also focused on preserving Bahrain’s heritage by hosting regular recitals, lectures and exhibitions each

Discover an incredible selection of everything from textiles to exotic spices during a visit here. While Muharraq is undoubtedly steeped in history, it also has a modern side and is the first port of call for many visitors as it is home to Bahrain International Airport. The nearby Amwaj Islands boast pristine beaches and luxury hotels, as well as a plush lagoon complex where you can find high-end restaurants, shops and designer boutiques. Visitors to the area can also take in several historic houses that have played a significant role in the history of the region. Bin Mater House was built in 1905 and was once the home of a prominent pearl merchant and his family. The space has now been converted into a museum devoted to the history of pearling. Elsewhere, Kurar House has been carefully preserved and is a space dedicated to the Bahraini art of Kurar embroidery. Shaikh Isa bin Ali House is another stop not to be missed, a former royal home, it is considered one of the most impressive examples of Gulf architecture in the country. The area is also home to Arad Fort, which following its construction some time in the 15th or 16th centuries, played a major role in defending the country. Having been painstakingly restored using authentic materials, it provides a unique glimpse into the past.

MEET | LEAD VENUE

A dynamic destination Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre is playing a vital role in boosting business tourism to the Kingdom

In 1991, Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre (BIECC) first opened its doors with the aim of bolstering the Kingdom’s fledgling events industry. In the years that have followed, the venue has been hugely successful, not only in hosting regional conferences but also in attracting business visitors from all 01

03

around the world. Key to its success is the highly adaptable nature of the space, which will once again play host to an important roster of events this coming year, as the venue’s place at the heart of the Kingdom’s economy is assured. The dynamic facility offers great flexibility, with separate function spaces, and access, meaning that several events can be hosted at the same time. The fact that the facility also offers almost 16,000 square metres of exhibition space means that it has proved to be attractive to a number of different industries, with this year’s programme once again covering a variety of sectors from lifestyle and business, to arts and education. This year BIECC has already hosted a range of

02

events including Bahrain International Garden Show and GEO Science, an important event that takes a look at the future of the region’s hydrocarbon resources. Meanwhile a further eight events scheduled to take place throughout the rest of 2018 will attract even more international visitors. Among some of the high-profile events on the roster is Gulf Construction Expo, which welcomes specialists from the construction industry across the Northern Gulf. While Jewellery Arabia also returns in November and is sure to attract a significant number of both business and leisure visitors. The annual show regularly welcomes more than 50,000 guests as it brings together 600 companies from 30 countries.

Exhibitions such as these have played a crucial role in achievements such as Bahrain posting an impressive three percent increase in the number of inbound tourists throughout 2017. Statistics showed that 12.7 million people visited the Kingdom, with an increase of 11.85 percent in the number of tourists accessing the country through Bahrain International Airport. And BIECC will undoubtedly play an even greater role in the coming years as the Kingdom looks to attract substantially more visitors every year. There is certainly plenty of scope for

attracting yet more conferences to BIECC with the two column-free exhibitions halls covering an impressive 14,000 square metres. There are also four VIP majlis areas and nine meeting rooms ranging from 30 square metres to 95 square metres, while there are hundreds of hotels located nearby. With the venue continually attracting new international business all the time, and Bahrain’s tourism offering growing rapidly, there is every reason to believe that the country will continue to be a leading business destination for many years to come.

Cultural connection A land steeped in rich heritage, Bahrain blends the past and present perfectly with a thriving contemporary cultural scene

Bahrain’s extraordinary history stretches back thousands of years, yet is still evident today in almost all areas of life. It is precisely that juxtaposition between the past, present and future, that makes Bahrain so special, and stand out to visitors. Testament to what can be achieved when real efforts are made to preserve treasures of the past, more than 4,000 years of history have been preserved in important sites that range from archaeological finds to ancient cities and some stunning examples of traditional Arabian architecture. The Kingdom was once home to the Dilmun people, one of the oldest and most significant civilisations in the Middle East dating back to the third millennium, and excavation work at sites across the country reveal fascinating insights into their way of life. The perfect complement is Bahrain’s burgeoning modern cultural scene, which offers plenty for business and leisure visitors, with a host of stunning venues and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Bahrain Pearling Trail At the very heart of Bahrain’s rich history is its connection to the sea. The Kingdom was a key trading hub from the outset, thanks to its location at the intersection between east and west. Bahrain, which translates as ‘two seas’ in Arabic, first found wealth from the ocean and was once one of the world’s premier pearling nations. During the 19th century, the Kingdom prospered as pearl divers and fishing merchants trawled the Arabian Gulf for the treasured bounty. The country’s fortunes changed once more with the discovery of oil in 1932, but reverence for its pearling past is an important part of the present. In recognition of the importance of its maritime past, the Bahrain Pearling Trail is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which takes visitors on a journey back in time. The trail takes in 17 listed buildings in Muharraq City, which include the former homes of pearl merchants. As the ancient former capital of the Kingdom, Muharraq

is a treasure trove of traditional architecture, with wind towers, arabesque details and carved wooden façades at every turn. In recognition of its special historical value, Muharraq City has been named the Capital of Islamic Culture 2018. The Pearling Trail is a fantastic way to truly appreciate the area, which also takes in three offshore oyster beds and part of the shore on the southern tip of Muharraq Island where boats used to set sail for the oyster beds. This very unique experience is one of the only ways left to get a glimpse into the world of pearl diving, chronicling both the lives of pearl merchants and the divers who bravely foraged the ocean floor.

Tree of Life One of Bahrain’s more quirky and mysterious historical attractions, the Tree of Life attracts thousands of visitors every year, keen to learn all about this solitary tree, standing in the desert with apparently no sustenance. For more than 400 years, this remarkable tree has stood in the desert with no source of water or vegetation for miles around. Understood to be a Prosopis Cineraria, archaeologists have unearthed artefacts including pottery relating to the Dilmun people, and potentially a military outpost, at the site. A visitor centre here gives insights into what is known of the tree’s story, detailing how this species favours arid conditions, but curiously would likely have originated in America. The tree stands around two kilometres from Jebel Dukhan, a haze-covered peak known as the Mountain of Smoke. Bab Al Bahrain and Manama Souq Another colourful take on local history comes with a visit to Manama Souq. This type of traditional marketplace was once the cornerstone of Arabian communities, a place where people would come together to trade goods, but also to share information. At the entrance to the souq stands, 89

Bab Al Bahrain, an important cultural landmark built in 1949 and once the site of government offices. The square in front of the building was once the terminus of the bustling customs pier. Carrying on the mercantile tradition, the souq itself makes for a wonderful experience, browsing the warren of stalls and storefronts selling everything from hand-painted lanterns to spices, gold, perfumes and Persian carpets. More than simply a place to pick up souvenirs, a visit to the souq gives a rare insight into how life was once lived in Manama.

Bahrain National Museum A shining example of the Kingdom’s efforts to preserve the past is Bahrain National Museum. The striking building opened its doors in 1998, designed by Danish architects KHR arkitekter. Its three cubical structures, perched by a waterway, make for a grand space to house artefacts, ancient documents and archaeological finds which chart the nation’s history. Nine main halls span different periods of life in Bahrain, from the traditional handicrafts hall to the ancient manuscripts and Islamic period halls. The Manama museum regularly hosts local events and visiting international exhibitions with this year’s highlights including Al-Fann: Art from the Islamic Civilization from The al-Sabah Collection, a fascinating look at Islamic culture through the renowned al-Sabah collection of Islamic Art. The exhibition considers themes in Islamic art, from calligraphy and geometric decoration to figurative art and jewellery.

Qalat Al Bahrain Site Museum The former capital of the Dilmun civilisation, this area is an absolute historical gold mine, with a series of archaeological digs having unearthed its many treasures. Artefacts found here have provided a clear picture of life in the Bronze age, as well as how the Dilmun people lived. The focal point at the site is Bahrain Fort which sits high on the norther coast, overlooking what was once a major military centre for the region. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, visitors can learn all about the area and its past at the fort museum with galleries which journey through five periods of local history.

Al Khamis Mosque One of the oldest mosques in Arabia, and thought to be the first in Bahrain, this 11th century house of worship has survived hundreds of years thanks to careful restoration work. Its striking twin minarets were added 200 years apart, yet today stand out on the Manama skyline. The structure as it stands today houses a prayer hall with a flat roof supported by wooden columns which has been dated to the 14th century. A limestone slab was discovered at the mosque with inscriptions of two verses from the Quran during a 12th century renovation.

Cultural Calendar Don’t miss a programme of cultural events throughout the Kingdom Bahrain International Book Fair Now in its 18th edition, this event showcases the broad spectrum of the publishing in the Arab world, as well as Bahraini works, foreign titles, children’s books and e-leaning resources. Held at Arad Fort, from March 28 to April 7. Bahrain Spring of Culture This major annual fixture takes place from February to April with everything from dance to theatre shows and poetry. Al-Fann: Art from the Islamic Civilization from The al-Sabah An artistic look at the history of Islam, taking place at Bahrain National Museum from January to June.

Al Fateh Mosque Able to welcome an incredible 7,000 worshippers at one time, Al Fateh Mosque in Manama is one of the largest mosques in the world. Built by the late Sheikh Isa ibn Salman Al Khalifa in 1987, and named after Ahmed Al Fateh, the founder of Bahrain, its huge dome is the world’s largest fibreglass dome. No expense has been spared on the ornate interiors, with Italian marble for the floors, a stunning chandelier from Austria and teak wood doors. It is also home to beautiful examples of Kufic calligraphy.

Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research This very special centre in Muharraq celebrates the life of Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, the son of the Kingdom’s former ruler. Shaikh Ebrahim was a leading thinker in Bahraini society and would hold weekly debates at his majlis. After his death in 1933, the centre was opened on the site of his majlis, in 2002. Nowadays, the centre hosts speakers, philosophers, poets and thinkers from all over the world in weekly lecture programmes. The centre has also adopted a curatorial role and to date has restored 10 traditional Bahraini homes in Muharraq and Manama. Linked to the centre is Ibrahim Al Arrayed House for Poetry, which is dedicated to the famous Bahraini writer and poet who was considered the country’s best, and Memory of the Place – Bin Matar House, a fantastic example of traditional architecture dating back to 1905, and a place to commemorate the Bin Matars, a Bahraini pearl trading family who were among the most powerful in the Gulf’s pearl trade. 91
