A love of storytelling runs deeply through the history of the Middle East, dating back to the days when Bedouin tribes gathered around the ghaf tree to share inspiring tales. Honouring this tradition, the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature is an annual celebration of literature in all its forms. Now in its 12th year, the programme features an incredible line-up of world-renowned public figures. More than a literature festival, the event has become a cultural fixture on Dubai’s packed calendar. With workshops and special events for everyone in the family, there will be much to explore, from science to philosophy and vegan cookery to leadership development. and guitarist, Bruno Major, she will open the event on Wednesday night, paving the way for music royalty, Lionel Richie, who takes the stage on February 27. It is not Richie’s first show in the emirates. The singer, now in his 70s, first performed in Dubai in 2014 and later at the F1 Yasalam After-Race Concerts in 2016 on Yas Island. Formerly part of the pop band, The Commodores, the singer-songwriter still makes performing seem effortless in spite of his years, which have seen an array of accolades and number ones during his career. The king of soul, Richie is still touring around the world and will be appearing this month at the Winter at Tantora festival in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ula region before arriving in Dubai. Audiences can expect fan favourites, including All Night Long and Hello, on the star’s hit list for the evening. He will be supported by jazz fusion band, Spyro Gyra, veterans of the New York jazz scene since they formed back in 1974. Finally, the band behind several hits, including Counting Stars and Stop and Stare, One Republic, will close the event on February 28. With lead singer Ryan Tedder at the helm, the rockers will be supported by jazz band Sammy Miller and The Congregation. Old hands at the festival, One Republic first performed on its stage in 2013. No strangers to the emirates, they’ve become regulars on the UAE’s live music calendar, just last November closing the Dubai Airshow gala.

The sound of music —— Abu Dhabi Classics returns to the capital for its ninth season, promising a packed line-up of performances
Some of the biggest names in classical music are making their way to the UAE capital this month for the return of Abu Dhabi Classics. The 2020 edition of the music festival kicked off on January 28 with French pianist David Fray leading the ensemble through Bach’s popular compositions for the piano. The performance saw the Geneva Chamber Orchestra and three other world-renowned pianists – Emmanuel Christien, Audrey Vigoureux and Jacques Rouvier – join Fray to deliver a musical extravaganza, which was met with thunderous applause from the audience.
Among the evening’s many highlights was Bach’s Concertos for Two, Three and Four Pianos, which involved the quartet playing simultaneously to create soul-stirring rhythm patterns. Fray’s rendition is known around the world and fans in the emirate had the privilege of experiencing the masterpiece first hand on opening night. Now in its ninth year, Abu Dhabi Classics has successfully carved a niche for itself as one of the nation’s foremost live music events. Every year, the festival brings an everexpanding roster of international artists to a growing base of classical music enthusiasts in the emirates.

This year’s programme will shine a spotlight on Ludwig van Beethoven’s contributions to music on the occasion of his 250th birth anniversary. A tribute act is set to take place on February 5 at Du Arena on Yas Island. The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, one of Germany’s largest ensembles, has curated the programme, inspired by the musician’s most influential works. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony will be the evening’s showstopping act. A highly acclaimed composition, the piece marked a turning point in musical history, ushering in the 19th century’s ‘Romantic’ period. The concert will see more than 100 musicians and a chorus of 70 singers perform this uplifting creation, which represents humanity, tolerance and unity. The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra will also perform on February 4 at the Cultural Foundation, treating audiences to an immersive chamber music programme. Among other hits, the troupe will perform the Clarinet Quintet in B minor by Johannes Brahms. First unveiled by Brahms in the 19th century, the composition is still regarded as one of the most remarkable works of chamber music ever produced. There is plenty more in store for fans of the genre, with concerts from homegrown and international artists, and one of the Arab world’s leading female vocalists closing the season. French pianist Lise de la Salle will perform Dances, a programme exploring dance rhythms in classical music, on February 1. The show will include works from Ravel, Stravinsky, Bartok and Debussy. Audiences will also be able to enjoy outstanding talent from across the region. Egyptian star Sanaa Nabil will perform at the Cultural Foundation on February 6,

The Kite Runner at Dubai Opera February 27 to 29 Matinee (3pm) and evening shows (8pm) are available In 2003, Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini took the literary world by storm when he debuted his first novel – The Kite Runner. The title became an overnight success, clocking up more than 100 weeks on the list of The New York Times Best Sellers. Four years later, San Franciscan playwright Matthew Spangler adapted the novel for the stage, inspired by his meeting with Hosseini in 2006. It took until 2014 for the production to take flight and debut in the United Kingdom, following which it enjoyed a critically acclaimed run through the region before embarking on an international tour. And now, the play will make its UAE debut this month at Dubai Opera. A poignant tale by Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner narrates a story of family, love and friendship, spanning cultures and continents. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Afghanistan on the brink of war, it follows the unlikely friendship and rivalry between a wealthy merchant’s son, Amir, and the son of his father’s servant, Hassan, finally detailing Amir’s journey towards redemption as he confronts his turbulent past. The stage production is no less powerful than its literary predecessor as it brings this heart-wrenching read to life. Exploring themes such as power, love and redemption, the novel dares to bring topics often taboo in the region to the stage.
The Kite Runner, based on Khaled Hosseini’s novel, makes its debut at Dubai Opera David Ahmad plays narrator, the 12-year-old Amir, a boy whose life is torn apart by his own jealousy and cowardice, tragedy leading him on a lifelong search for redemption to right his childhood wrongs. The British actor has been part of the cast since the UK launch in 2014, when he began as an understudy. Having spent so many years with the production, he says it has become a huge part of his life. “It means a good deal to me. I’ve made some very close friends working on it and there are elements of the story that will resonate with everyone,” he tells us. Although he was born and raised in London, Ahmad’s father grew up in the north-west of Pakistan, close to the Afghan border. So for him, the characters in the story feel very close to home. From a personal standpoint, Ahmad says he can relate to his stage father Baba’s journey, as the pair emigrate from Afghanistan to Pakistan

and then to the US, following the Soviet Union’s military intervention in 1979, trying to make their way in a very foreign land. “My father was an immigrant to the UK in the 1960s so I know he and Baba would have had a similar experience while trying to establish their lives in a new, unfamiliar country,” he explains. Ahmad adds that the stage version is a “very faithful and engaging adaptation of the much-loved story” and though it’s set in 1970s Kabul, it still has very real parallels with the world today. “It’s a privilege to be allowed to tell this powerful story in a way that draws people in and connects them to the action. The narrative sheds light on significant human issues, encompassing love, loss, family, guilt, political problems, immigration, war and the abuse of power. “All of these are continuous daily struggles for people belonging to any period of history. So, in that sense, it is still, sadly, very relevant. There will always be displaced people. It’s important to hear their stories.”

For a truly riveting journey back in time, Mleiha Archaeological Centre in Sharjah chronicles the lives of settlers in the region right from the Palaeolithic era. A Neolithic community also flourished around 8000 BCE and continued to grow through the Bronze, Iron and Pre-Islamic ages. In 1992, a monastery and church dating back to the seventh century were discovered on Abu Dhabi’s Sir Bani Yas Island. Experts say that its presence in the region is proof that Islam and Christianity managed to coexist peacefully for many decades. It is believed that the site was occupied for close to 150 years and was also home to a small community of around 30 Nestorian monks who lived and prayed here more than a thousand years ago. The Hili Archaeological Site in Al Ain is a fascinating place to learn about the UAE’s past. A series of tombs, houses, strongholds and irrigation systems from the Bronze and Iron Ages, have been discovered here. These finds indicate that the town was the earliest agricultural village in the region, dating back to 3,000 BCE. A must-see is the 4,000-year-old Grand Tomb, which was restored in the 1970s. Just 12 metres in diameter and now unroofed, it was believed to have originally been at least four metres tall with a statuesque roof. Between 1,000 and 600 BCE, several Iron Age villages thrived in the area. Many houses were built of mud brick and they still stand several metres high. / Ed Dour, Umm Al Quwain The town of Ed Dour in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain lies along the southeastern coast of the Arabian Gulf. At the beginning of the first century AD, its strategic position made the town an important port facilitating trade within the region and across the Indian Ocean. Nestled in a tiny district within the emirate and surrounded by high sand dunes, Ed Dour may easily skip a traveller’s radar but archaeological excavations from 30 years ago reveal that town was a place of immense significance in the past. As one of the largest archaeological sites in the emirate, it has been nominated for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. Several tombs, pottery items, jewellery and coins were unearthed at the site during early digs. But the ruins of a 2,000-year-old temple are among the most significant finds. It was built as an altar to worship the sun god with a fire pit inside for religious rituals. A large fort was also found, with walls almost 20 metres high and circular structures on the corners with eagle statues. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has some of the most significant archaeological sites in the Middle East. While several sites dotted across the country are already gaining popularity, Madain Saleh is a must-visit. Often dubbed the ‘second Petra’, Madain Saleh is on par with its famous cousin across the border in Jordan. A major trading city along the ancient Nabataean trade route, recent excavations have revealed the foundations of houses and a market area for traders and caravans. However, it’s the 131 enigmatic tombs, which combine elements of Graeco-Roman architecture with Nabataean and Babylonian imagery, that grab all the attention. The site is currently closed for refurbishment and is due to reopen in October 2020.

A sparkling legacy —— The man credited with revolutionising luxury jewellery, Harry Winston’s legacy as the king of diamonds lives on
The jeweller to the stars, Harry Winston was widely regarded as the king of diamonds during his illustrious life. From the magical 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond engagement ring worn by the legendary Elizabeth Taylor to the exquisite 40.42-carat marquise-cut diamond ring crafted for former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, his designs drew in the most prominent figures of the 20th century. Heads of state, royal dignitaries and stars of the silver screen were all dazzled by his creations. Such was his legacy that Winston’s design philosophy is perpetuated in every new collection that the house rolls out even today, more than four decades since his passing. While he left no stone unturned to put his eponymous brand on the map, he also played a pivotal role in the history and development of luxury jewellery. During his career, Winston built a collection of some of the world’s most famous diamonds and rare gemstones, rivalling even those of royal houses. By the early 1950s, it was estimated that his personal collection was the second largest and most important in the world, after the British royal family. Some noteworthy stones that were part of his treasury included the Hope Diamond, the Star of the East, the Portuguese Diamond and the Indore Pears.

But for his precocious talent, the man came from humble beginnings. Born a jeweller’s son in 1896, it is said that he had a keen eye for precious jewellery. When he was only 12 years old, he spotted a green stone from a local junk jewellery retailer and purchased it for just 25 cents (less than a dirham). Two days later, he sold it for US$800 (almost AED3,000), after identifying the stone as a two-carat emerald. At the age of 15, Winston quit school to work in the family business in Los Angeles, but he soon decided to strike out on his own. Much of his initial success stemmed from selling jewellery he purchased from estate auctions. Several wealthy heiresses, including the likes of Rebecca Darlington Stoddard and Arabella Huntington, sold items deemed outdated from their personal collections, only for the talented craftsman to refashion and revive them with more modern, timeless settings. On the back of his successful start in the world of jewels, the house of Harry Winston was born in New York City in 1932. Under the new brand, he designed, manufactured and sold several collections, which have stood the test of time. Winston always believed that jewellery design should be dictated by the gemstones themselves, rather than their settings. It was this simple yet revolutionary philosophy that won him a high-profile and discerning clientele as well as an eternal place in the history of jewellery making.

Did you know? The house of Harry Winston introduced timepieces in 1989, 11 years after the founder’s death. In 2004, the maison created the world’s first timepiece crafted in zalium – an innovative, zirconium-based alloy. The brand reinforced its presence in the universe of horology in 2007, with the opening of a manufacturing facility in Geneva, Switzerland.

It’s thought that one-third of the world’s most famous diamonds and gemstones passed through Winston’s hands during his career. In 1935, he purchased his first history-making diamond – the Jonker. The 726-carat uncut stone made headlines across the globe when it was acquired by the New York jeweller. It was later cleaved into 12 individual pieces, the largest of which – an emerald cut – weighed a total of 125.35-carats. In 1949, he acquired the most famous stone of all, the 45.52-carat Hope Diamond. Originally mined in India, the heart-shaped blue diamond boasts a storied past. In the 1600s, it was the centrepiece of the crown jewels of prerevolutionary France, before appearing in the catalogue of a gem collection owned by a London banking family almost two centuries later. After its acquisition, Winston donated the diamond to the Smithsonian Institution as a gift, helping establish the museum’s National Gem Collection. Although the jeweller continued to contribute to the museum in the years that followed, the Hope Diamond still occupies pride of place and is now permanently on display. As a testament to his historic legacy, the institution opened The Harry Winston Gallery in 1997. Throughout his life, Winston used his wealth and influence to support worthy causes. Between 1949 and 1953, he took his most famous jewels on a cross-country exhibition called The Court of Jewels, raising funds over the fouryear tour to benefit local charities. His philanthropic legacy continues to this day, with the Harry Winston Brilliant Futures Charitable Programme helping disadvantaged young people around the world, and amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, which supports causes related to the AIDS epidemic. In spite of his resistance to fame, Winston’s prodigious talent made him a household name. As his popularity grew, so did his list of appointments with the who’s who of society. British royals, such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, always made requests to meet him on visits to New York. The royal couple even went on to purchase several pieces of the jewellery master’s collections, including the famed McLean Diamond. In his personal life, Winston maintained a fiercely private profile. But behind the scenes, he was changing history, making a mark which would endure long after his passing, paving the way for the future of jewellery design. Some of his techniques, including nature-inspired clustering and the sunflower motif, are widely used even today. Clearly, his legacy lives on, way beyond his first Manhattan Fifth Avenue boutique, with salons around the world, including London, Paris, Shanghai and Tokyo, proudly displaying the house’s collections.

In 2013, Harry Winston Inc. acquired a 101.73-carat flawless, colourless, pear-shaped diamond. Described as the most perfect diamond ever offered for sale at an auction, the house named the stone the Winston Legacy diamond. In 2018, the house purchased an 18.96-carat pink diamond and named it the Winston Pink Legacy. It was awarded the ‘Fancy Vivid’ grade by the Gemological Institute of America for its intense hue and saturation.

It may be a few years before the Michelin Guide rolls out a UAE edition, but there’s certainly no dearth of Michelin-standard restaurants in the emirates. In fact, a simple search will reveal a raft of top-notch restaurants, helmed by Michelin-star-winning chefs, in almost every neighbourhood. Down the Jumeirah coast alone, venues that have won over the hearts (and palettes) of Dubai’s foodies are present at every turn. This is in large part thanks to the commitment made by Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts to create dining experiences that are unique and memorable. The Jumeirah group boasts 62 dining outlets in the UAE, many of which have enjoyed years of success and are still reigning supreme on the country’s dining scene. A variety of world f lavours – think Peruvian, Japanese, Greek and Middle Eastern – are well represented across the brand’s diverse portfolio. Several new concepts are also in the pipeline, due to open in the lead up to the biggest event of the year – Expo 2020 Dubai. Ellis is charged with transforming the group’s restaurant offering with a vision for the Jumeirah name to gain recognition on the global dining scene.
“When José Silva (CEO of Jumeirah Group) first approached me for this role, I was initially hesitant. But the more I researched, the more I realised that Jumeirah is at the cutting edge of the food and beverage industry. This piqued my interest.” And so he decided to leave Paris and take on one of the world’s most visited cities. Before arriving in Dubai, Ellis served as International Director of the Michelin Guide for seven years, a role that saw him interact with some of the world’s greatest chefs and judge renowned restaurants and dining experiences across the globe. With firsthand knowledge of the very factors that make concepts stand out, his appointment as the head of the Jumeirah group’s culinary portfolio provides great potential to steal a march on the competition. To become Michelin-starred, restaurants must fulfil five criteria based on the quality of the ingredients used, mastery of flavour and cooking techniques, the personality of the chef in his cuisine, value for money and consistency between visits. Ellis’ very first task in his new role was to visit all of Jumeirah’s 62 dining outlets to check if they satisfy the criteria. “I’ve been very impressed with the level of service at Jumeirah, and Dubai, in general. I think the emirate is one of the world’s best-kept secrets when it comes to its vibrant culinary offering.” It’s big praise coming from a man who has judged some of the world’s best restaurants. But he adds: “There’s always room for improvement.”

But Ellis has stepped up to the challenge. “All of us know that Dubai has an extremely competitive hotel market and it shows no signs of slowing down. We have 700 hotels and over 150,000 rooms in the emirate, which exceeds those in mega tourism destinations like Las Vegas or Macau. And with 40,000 more rooms scheduled to open in the run-up to Expo 2020 Dubai, it is time for the brand to be firing on all cylinders, ensuring that even the basics have a wow factor.” From staff to ingredients, Ellis is here to shake things up. “The ultimate goal is to create a great team because great food is about great teamwork and about having the right people in place. More than 50 percent of the staff employed by Jumeirah is involved in F&B, including the chefs, stewards, kitchen staff, bartenders and waiters. And now that greater focus is placed on them, they are very excited to be part of this transformation. “We are seeing new energy and a new dynamic within the team and they are quite confident in our ability to bring about this change together. But while elevating those already on our teams, we are also looking into bringing people from outside. We know that guests love to connect with the chefs and speak to the artists behind the food. That’s why we are hiring exceptional chefs from around the globe to craft our signature restaurants and create unique dishes.” Many of the new recruits are being handpicked by Ellis himself, who is drawing on his book of contacts from his Michelin days to tap into the best talent possible as the brand moves into its next phase.

Ellis says: “Ultimately, we want our F&B offering to amaze guests with something they have never tried before or weren’t expecting. That could be the food, the service, the vibes, the look and feel. Even if people don’t stay with us, we want them to dine with us. We don’t want our restaurants to simply be a convenience to hotel guests, like the concept traditionally was in the past. In fact, we want to plug our venues on the culinary map as a destination in itself. “With this in mind, we have introduced several new concepts, the latest one being Kayto, the pop-up rooftop venue in Jumeirah Al Naseem. With chef Cristian Goya at the helm, Kayto offers a unique and experimental take on Nikkei (Peruvian meets Japanese) cuisine.” Though he has been with the company just a few months, Ellis already has some firm favourites “Kayto boasts the best Nikkei experience, Rockfish is a great spot for Italian-Mediterranean cuisine, Al Muntaha has the finest French food in Dubai, Shimmers recently rolled out a new Greek menu and finally, our recently-revamped Zheng He’s launched a new Chinese menu.” One of the guiding principles behind the changes taking place at Jumeirah, Ellis explains, is getting Dubai Michelin ready. He says: “It’s only a matter of time before the Michelin Guide arrives in Dubai. Several of our restaurants in Jumeirah are already cooking at the Michelin level, and we want to ensure we are ready when that happens.” jumeirah.com
The Jumeirah group boasts 62 dining outlets in the UAE, many of which have enjoyed years of success The team recently added some world-renowned names to its culinary portfolio. Celebrity chefs, including the likes of Francky Semblat, Kim JoinieMaurin and Kasper Kurdahl, who, combined, have seven Michelin stars under their belts, have already been successfully embedded into the team. In addition to revamping the team dynamic, Ellis says there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, with everything from the look and feel of the restaurants to the dishes, all of which are being scrutinised under his watch. “We are analysing everything, down to our ingredients. I want to help our chefs source the best products from the best supply chains. We serve close to 12,000 meals a day, and catering to every hotel guest means ensuring we have everything in place, from the best organic produce to quality imports as well as fresh seafood, sourced locally from the UAE.” But it is not only the hotel guests who they need to wow. A large number of residents make up the client base at Jumeirah’s restaurants. While properties like Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Jumeirah Mina A’Salam draw the crowds in for brunch every weekend, speciality venues, serving up everything from French to Greek, Arabic to European, see packed tables every evening.

A little more than a four-hour flight from Dubai, we initially landed on Mahé. Home to the small capital city of Victoria, it is, by far, the largest and most developed of the islands. With about 90 percent of the local population inhabiting the island, Mahé is as busy as it can get with its buzzing city life. But that doesn’t mean you forgo time on the island if you’re looking for a more secluded escape. Mahé has the largest selection of five-star resorts, restaurants and white-sand beaches dotting the coast as well as numerous activities, such as snorkelling or diving with whale sharks and hiking across the rugged interior of the island. In fact, you can make the most of your visit by choosing Mahé as your base, as no matter where you’re located on the island, you’re only a few minutes away from its most fabulous natural attractions and hidden gems. We stayed at Constance Ephelia on the west coast, which is one of the largest resorts in the Indian Ocean. Stretching out across 296 acres, the property is situated on two of the most picturesque beaches in Mahé and is an entry point to the marine national park of Port Launay.
Seychelles
There are very few destinations in the world blessed with more natural beauty than the Seychelles. The archipelago of 115 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean boasts more than 1,600 kilometres of picturesque coastline, with lush forests and striking rock formations punctuating the endless blue. So pristine and untouched, Mother Nature was incredibly generous with the Seychelles. In fact, early explorers, who landed on the islands, thought they had stumbled upon the Garden of Eden. Though remote (Seychelles lies miles east of Kenya and to the north of Madagascar in the southern hemisphere), the destination attracts an increasing number of visitors every year, who flock to the archipelago seeking the ultimate romantic escape. Even Britain’s famous royals, Prince William and Catherine Middleton chose this heavenly cluster of islands for their honeymoon. But there’s more to the Seychelles than beautiful beaches and water so clear, you never lose sight of your feet. The main island of Mahé has a fascinating Creole heritage that is celebrated through its intricate French and British colonial architecture, colourful carnivals and traditional food.

Eden Island
Mahé has a fascinating Creole heritage that is celebrated through its colonial architecture, colourful carnivals and traditional food We decided to spend the first day tuning into island life, exploring the beaches, strolling among the palm trees in the botanical gardens and checking out the local markets. One of the biggest highlights of our day was visiting Port Launay beach, located within the marine national park. Not commonly known among visitors, it can be reached via a series of small roads that run through the resort. Bicycles can be hired to get there and after half an hour of riding through the stunning surroundings, we arrived at a tiny path that descended down to the beach, where it appeared that we were the only people to have made the journey. Thanks to the peaceful surrounds, a staggering amount of marine life can be found in this area. So if you do visit, be sure to pack snorkelling equipment. Finding ourselves thoroughly relaxed, we chose to be more active during our second day on the island. Thrill seekers will be pleased to know that Mahé is rife with opportunities for adventure. The daunting zip lines that run through the national park is high on travellers’ bucket lists. We decided to take on the challenge and try one of the eight zip lines that stretch from 85 to 120 metres. Traversing the forest’s lush green canopy of trees and granite boulders with views of the stunning coastline, it is not an experience to miss. Seeking something more peaceful after the hair-raising zip line experience, we decided to go kayaking through the mangroves that sit at the heart of the resort. This was a fantastic way to see local fauna and flora, with several species that can only be found in the Seychelles. We

DINING The Nest: For those seeking incredible views, this venue is a must-visit, thanks to its location on top of a natural rock formation. Nestled in Constance Lémuria, the menu boasts fresh seafood, think oysters, prawns, scallops and more. Adam and Eve: This Mahé restaurant offers a casual beachside setting where the main focus is on Southeast Asian cuisine. Try the nasi goreng, char grilled pork ribs and coconut saboo. Diva: There is a refined menu of classic Mediterranean dishes and a large wine list that is unrivalled on the island at Diva on Praslin. kayaked towards the north of the resort, where we discovered yet another picture-perfect beach with pale green waters that are contrasted by white sand and patches of black volcanic rock. A great spot to wind down an active day, make sure you get here in time to view the glorious sunset. The next day, we boarded a seaplane and took a 15-minute flight to Praslin, a tiny island boasting a collection of luxurious resorts. After the short transfer, we arrived at Constance Lémuria, a sprawling 249-acre property that showcases the natural beauty of the Seychelles. The hotel and its grounds are built into the island’s luscious green hillside, while the three beaches of soft white sand have been largely untouched. Praslin has a rugged jungle-covered interior and it’s home to a national park and a nature reserve, peppered with large, striking granite boulders and is teeming with wildlife. We enjoyed three wonderful days on the island, much of which was spent getting up close to the exotic wildlife, including giant tortoises, colourful peacocks and fruit bats. A dream for wildlife enthusiasts, one of the island’s three beaches is reserved as a nesting ground for turtles. There is even a Turtle Manager – a rather unique position – to help the young have the best chance of survival. Those visiting between November and February may even be fortunate enough to see the young turtles hatch and make their first journey to the ocean. With plenty to do on the island, we found it hard to whittle down our options. But we’d definitely recommend hiking the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve. The park is home to the endemic coco de mar, the largest seed in the world, which is very common on the island but rarely found anywhere else. As you would expect from a secluded destination, there were plenty of ways to simply rest and relax on Praslin and that’s how we decided to spend our last day. We alternated between swimming and snorkelling at Anse Georgette beach. A serebe stretch of sand with mesmerising views, it is the perfect spot to draw your visit to a close, taking in the sunset with a cocktail in hand.

Luca Valentini The Italian artist tells us why Dubai serves as the ideal backdrop for creative inspiration
Dubai is a city of contrasts, nestled beautifully between tradition and modernity. Skyscrapers, man-made islands and malls dot the landscape but they peacefully coexist with souks, wind tower houses and desert dunes. It gives you the feeling of being catapulted into another reality, in a world made up of serene sandy panoramas reminiscent of the tales found in One Thousand and One Nights. But it also oozes plenty of modern charm. My work as an artist is nothing more than a projection of my emotions and feelings on canvas. It is merely a representation of the places in which I live. Dubai’s multicultural set-up, where people from all over the world are welcome, serves as a constant source of inspiration. Add to it the dynamism of the emirate, the contradictions that characterise it and the continuous aspiration for improvement and you have yourself the perfect muse. Each of these peculiarities is manifested in my works. But it is not only the creative stimulus that makes Dubai a very special place for me. In fact, when I’m seeking solitude or looking to make the most of my free time, there are so many places to explore. On the weekends, I like going to the beach or enjoying a quiet, intimate dinner with my friends. I find it very relaxing to walk on the shore or just lie in the sand and sunbathe while reading a good book, leaving all the stresses of everyday life behind. The neighbouring emirates are also well worth a visit as they offer the chance to reconnect with nature. Fujairah boasts a dramatic mountainside backdrop, Ras Al Khaimah is home to the most beautiful beaches while Abu Dhabi reminds me of the stunning coast in southern France, where the azure sea is surrounded by green landscapes. When the time permits, I like to take a trip to Musandam in Oman, where you can rent a boat and spend a few hours fishing. Crystal clear waters, pristine landscapes and the possibility of encountering dolphins make this corner of Oman a true paradise for nature lovers. For those seeking that adrenaline rush, flying above the cityscape takes it to a whole new level. Skydiving over the dunes or above Palm Jumeirah offers views that can’t be matched by any other city in the world. Finally, staying true to my Italian heritage, I love food. Nowhere in the world is there such an extensive choice of cuisines as in Dubai. Nusr-Et Steakhouse is one of my go-to venues and my favourite dishes here are the burger and the Ottoman steak. lucavalentini.art
