Etihad Museum

Etihad Museum in Dubai’s vibrant Jumeirah district bears all the hallmarks of the UAE’s forward-thinking approach. Yet stepping inside the galleries of this modern landmark is akin to journeying back in time, where you’ll discover a series of intriguing displays that chronicle the birth of the nation. Covering 2.5 hectares, the museum is divided into eight pavilions that chart the country’s transformation from a humble fishing village to a thriving modern metropolis, making it one of the best places in the region to learn more about the UAE’s past. The museum houses several collections across three buildings: the Union House (Dar Al Etihad), the Guest Palace and the Visitors Pavilion. A walk through its halls will reveal significant objects that nod to the heritage of the nation, including local art, paintings, photographs and artefacts. At the Visitors Pavilion, permanent exhibitions can be found displayed across several halls, including one dedicated to the founding fathers. Here, rare photographs, films and personal belongings donated by the country’s leaders, such as military uniforms and medals from the Armed Forces, offer insights into the UAE’s humble beginnings. You will also discover documentaries that tell the story of the era before the formation of the federation, biographies of the founding fathers and family trees. Perhaps one of the biggest highlights is the pavilion dedicated to the UAE constitution, where the centrepiece of the museum lies – the original declaration document that marked the formation of the nation.

Adorning the walls are inspirational messages from the country’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. One such quote reads: “Thanks to our ancestors who challenged the adversities of time and the misfortunes of life, due to their fortitude, our generation is living in prosperity and grace.” While every quote, artwork and artefact demands your attention, the structure these pieces are housed within is equally fascinating. The building is grand, modern and elegant, humble yet statuesque, and stands on the site where the historic unification of the emirates took place. Its architecture mimics the shape of a manuscript, inspired by the Unification Agreement, and it is supported by seven pillars built into the museum as symbols of the pens that were used to sign the declaration document that formed the United Arab Emirates in 1971. On December 2 this year, the country marks 48 years since that historic date. Highlighting the milestones that led up to its formation, an interactive timeline is displayed inside the museum. In the 19th century, the individual emirates signed agreements with the British protectorate, resulting in the creation of the Trucial States. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pearling began to thrive before the search for oil commenced in the 1930s. By 1962, the first cargo of crude oil was exported from Abu Dhabi. Thanks to this new-found source, the wealth that the country brought in

Literature on display at Etihad Museum

On December 2 this year, the country marks 48 years since the formation of the United Arab Emirates was used to develop its infrastructure, including the country’s first schools, hospitals and housing. In 1968, the British announced their departure from the Arabian Gulf, and in turn, Sheikh Zayed looked to unite the divided emirates. On December 2, 1971, six of the seven emirates came together, and in the following year, Ras Al Khaimah would see the final pillar cemented, when it became the last Bedouin state to join the UAE. Today, the museum celebrates this journey with its huge flag waving from a 123-metre golden pole along Jumeirah Beach Road. In true UAE fashion, it draws attention with grace and splendour, and is a popular spot among visitors and locals in the city, especially during the country’s National Day celebrations. Surrounded by lush gardens, the f lag draws people to spend time here, to learn about the path that took the country from a disparate group of states, comprised of Bedouin tribes, to one of the region’s superpowers. Those seeking to learn more can also benefit from the workshops conducted at the museum. These sessions take place all year round and offer insights into everything from the UAE flag to the national bird – the falcon. Through this interactive programme, the museum aims to capture the heady heights the country has reached today – a world leader in several sectors while remaining very much rooted in its origins.   etihadmuseum.dubaiculture.gov.ae

The emirate of Sharjah has championed the arts in the UAE long before the creative scene in its sister emirates began taking shape. In 2014, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) named the emirate the Islamic Cultural Capital. And the year 2019 marks 21 years since UNESCO named Sharjah the Cultural Capital of the Arab World. Through the years, Sharjah has always stood out as one of the UAE’s true cultural gems, but the emirate is not keen to rest on its laurels. The ambitious Heart of Sharjah project only proves that the city has its sights set on a bright future while maintaining a firm focus on its past. The Heart of Sharjah restoration project has drastically transformed the city’s cultural landscape since it first broke ground in 2010. Although the site is still a work in progress, due for completion in 2025, the landmark develop-

ment has breathed new life into the emirate and is already attracting thousands of visitors. The attraction has also made it to the list of candidates to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As part of this 15-year undertaking, many of Sharjah’s heritage sites will be restored to their former glory. Several traditional houses, souks, forts, museums and art galleries have already been painstakingly revived to reflect life in the emirate in the 1950s. Preserving the nation’s rich heritage is at the heart of this dedicated effort. The exhibits found within the art galleries housed in the area narrate an inspiring tale of Sharjah’s past, which dates back to the 11th century when Arab geographer,

Al Bait Sharjah

Al Sharif Al Idrisir, recorded an early port in the location of Sharjah. Thanks to the abundance of rice, dates and pearls, trade flourished in the region. In the 18th century, Sharjah became a main port on the coast between Saudi Arabia and Ras Al Khaimah, facilitating the exchange of goods with Iraq. Colonisation in the 19th century destroyed the port, but with local efforts, trade routes were re-established in the early 1900s. The resulting commercial activity revived Sharjah’s economy and helped residents build homes, markets and mosques. These magnificent structures still stand today in Sharjah’s heritage heartland as a testament to the city’s growth and development over the decades. Since the mid-1950s, Heart of Sharjah has been excluded in urban development plans to preserve its heritage. While subtle contemporary touches have been added, it still evokes the city’s old-world charm. A boutique hotel, Al Bait Sharjah, was recently opened, offering five-star luxury with the ambience of a bygone era. Old marketplaces have also been refurbished to give visitors a glimpse into 20th-century bazaars. Art galleries here feature permanent displays and also host temporary exhibitions offering insights into the region. Upon completion, the area will also be home to archaeological museums with intriguing finds, some discovered in the nearby town of Mleiha. Walking tours are popular around the newly-restored site and offer the chance to take in everything that Heart of Sharjah has to offer. It is here that visitors can embark on a journey through the emirate’s past and explore its rich heritage.  heartofsharjah.ae

Learn about Sharjah’s past and present with a visit to the museums housed within Heart of Sharjah SHARJAH HERITAGE MUSEUM A tribute to the emirate’s past, the museum highlights Sharjah’s rich heritage and the culture of the local people. Taking visitors on a journey through the Bedouin’s unforgiving environment, its exhibits take a closer look at the early influence of the expansive coastline on local lifestyles, when fishing and pearl diving were the mainstays of the economy. The museum also highlights local customs, including Arabic hospitality, celebrations and wedding ceremonies, while also presenting tales, proverbs and poems that were an integral part of the local culture. SHARJAH AL HISN MUSEUM One of the most important heritage buildings in the emirate, Sharjah Al Hisn Museum or Sharjah Fort was built in 1823 and served as the headquarters and residence of the ruling family. Today, the fort houses a modern history museum that reflects Sharjah’s past through a collection of photographs and artefacts. BAIT AL NABOODAH MUSEUM The home of a prominent pearl merchant during the 1800s, Bait Al Naboodah offers a glimpse into the days gone by. Its authentic architecture has been well preserved, reflecting the traditional designs of homes that belonged to wealthy merchants of the century. Stepping inside this 19th-century structure is akin to travelling back in time, where you can learn more about the lifestyle of the fortunate few during the emirate’s early days. AL ESLAH SCHOOL MUSEUM Established in 1935, Al Eslah School was the first formal education institution to open in Sharjah, welcoming pupils from all over the region. Here, you can explore the classrooms, sit on students’ desks and admire the magnificence of the Holy Quran stands made from palm fronds.

Tolerance Bridge

Keeping the faith —— Rounding up the Year of Tolerance celebrations in the UAE, we take a look at local initiatives championed in 2019 to promote acceptance for all

With around 200 nationalities living peacefully together in the UAE, it was fitting to have 2019 named the Year of Tolerance. Based on the principles of peace, humanity, coexistence and respect, several initiatives were announced during the year, cementing the nation’s ideals at home and beyond. From interfaith dialogue to inclusivity for those with special needs, the country’s leaders proved that it was more than a mere slogan. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said: “Tolerance is the cornerstone of advanced societies, intellectually and humanely, and is one of the tools of empowering civilisations and ensuring stability and flourishing of nations.” Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, said that tolerance was a vital principle for the country’s and the world’s future.

There have been initiatives, both big and small, from international sporting events to the renaming of mosques and bridges. Perhaps, one of the most significant markers of the Year of Tolerance was the visit of Pope Francis in February that saw the pontiff speak to an audience of around 180,000 people at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi. His historic trip sent a message to the world that the UAE welcomes all faiths. For the many Catholics in the UAE, it was the event of a lifetime, many journeying overnight to secure their place at the sermon held in the UAE capital, eager to bear witness to the first time a sitting pontiff had stepped foot on the Arabian Peninsula. A month later, as a sign of allegiance for those with special needs, the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 was held in the capital, highlighting the country’s move towards inclusion.

More than 7,000 athletes from 170 countries registered to compete in 24 summer sports, along with 2,500 coaches and 20,000 volunteers. It sent a loud signal of support and acceptance for all those that the country respects as “people of determination”. Earlier this year, the oldest Christian site discovered on Abu Dhabi’s Sir Bani Yas Island in 1992 was also finally opened to the public. The church and monastery date back to the seventh and eighth centuries while other remains found on the site include courtyard homes and pottery items. As the earliest known evidence of Christianity in the emirates, it sheds light on the UAE’s culturally diverse heritage and long-standing values of tolerance and acceptance of other faiths. Embodying gender equality, President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan also passed a decree stating that for the 2019 elections, women must comprise 50 percent of the UAE’s Federal National Council. Further embracing religious tolerance, the year also saw construction begin on the region’s first traditional Hindu stone temple, believed to open in 2020. The development of the 13.7-acre plot of land in Abu Mureikha is a sign of allegiance with the country’s Indian population, one of the largest expatriate communities in the UAE. Construction will also commence next year on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island for the Abrahamic Family House. A place of worship for the three Abrahamic religions, Islam, Christianity and Judaism, it is the first project of its kind, not only in the UAE but also in the entire region. Several places of worship have also been renamed, including the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Mosque in Mushrif, which is now Mary the Mother of Jesus Mosque. The structure over Dubai Water Canal was also named as the Tolerance Bridge to pay homage to the ideals of the nation. The message has spread across many aspects of society, from schools to workplaces. It has also led to the introduction of several new initiatives, from better training for teachers to support those with special needs to empathy workshops. It is the UAE’s genuine belief in these principles that continues to attract the world to its shores.  theyearoftolerance.ae

Island escapes ——

This holiday season, book a private seaplane charter with Seawings and fly to your next island holiday in style – the perfect treat for families and couples looking to discover the UAE capital

Abu Dhabi is well known for its cultural landmarks, plush resorts and glamorous malls, yet some of the greatest adventures can be found on its smaller islands. The UAE capital is made up of more than 200 islands, some of which can easily be accessed by road and ferry. But with so much to discover, one of the best ways to take it all in is by flying to your destination, allowing more time for exploration. In keeping with the luxury that awaits visitors on these islands, seaplane charter company, Seawings, offers private flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. With Cessna seaplanes for up to nine passengers, each seat is by the window to ensure uninterrupted aerial vistas. The water take-off and landing add to the sense of escape. But nothing beats the thrill of viewing the UAE’s most remarkable sights from 1,500 feet above the ground. Making family holidays even more memorable this season, Seawings offers two exclusive island experiences. Nestled in the remote far western region of Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island promises an African-style safari without leaving the region. While off the coast of Saadiyat Island, Zaya Nurai Island serves as the ideal tropical escape for beach lovers. What makes the experience even more exciting is cutting down on the long road and ferry commute, and arriving at your destination in style.

Wildlife safari on Sir Bani Yas Island

/ Sir Bani Yas Island

A stunning combination of rugged landscapes, mangrove forests and coastal waters, the charming Sir Bani Yas Island can be accessed by a five-hour road and ferry journey. But a seaplane flight promises the quickest (and most scenic) route. On the island, embark on a safari through the Arabian Wildlife Park, home to more than 13,000 free-roaming animals, including indigenous species like the Arabian oryx and sand gazelle. Even the waters surrounding Sir Bani Yas Island are teeming with dolphins and sea turtles. For history buffs, the destination boasts one of the region’s oldest archaeological sites with the most significant discovery being the ruins of an ancient Christian monastery that dates back to the late sixth century AD. While a day trip is a great option, those looking to make the most of their visit can extend their escape with a stay at a trio of plush Anantara resorts.

Van Cleef & Arpels continues its tradition of bringing fairytales to life on its dials with yet another masterpiece. The poetic complication found on the dial of the Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux watch sees two lovers rendezvous under the moonlight on a bridge in Paris. The hours are marked by the woman moving progressively forward while the man crosses his half of the bridge every 60 minutes. Off the charts ——

This December, Mike Horn culminates his two-year expedition linking the poles with the support of Panerai. We anticipate the celebration of this epic achievement

Mike Horn operates on a 30-hour day. With five hours each for food and rest, he spends the remaining 20 merely walking to accomplish the last leg of his two-year expedition – a 2,500-kilometre trajectory across the frozen Arctic Ocean, before the polar winter settles. For those unfamiliar with the name, the South African is considered to be the world’s greatest explorer. Following the equator around the globe with no motorised transport has been his greatest achievement to date. And he is currently in the final stages of a Pole2Pole expedition that will see him complete a 270,000-kilometre journey in December, if he is successful. The trek will link the South and North Poles through conquering mountain peaks and crossing oceans, using only kayaks, skis, 4x4s and his custom-built 109-foot aluminium boat, the Pangaea, designed to go anywhere. Sturdy and broad-shouldered, tanned and weather beaten, Horn’s physical stature perfectly embodies the description of an outdoorsman. Yet with several almost inconceivable feats to his name, Horn still believes that nothing could be greater than the magnificent planet we inhabit. Driven by a keen passion for nature, the young Horn often found himself in remote corners of the globe, where few would dare to tread. It wasn’t too long before adventure would become a full-time job and the world would start to take notice of his extreme talents, including the venerable Italian watch maison, Panerai. At the turn of the 21st century, Horn became the first man ever to circumnavigate the globe at the equator with no motorised transport. The feat, which took 17 months, won him the 2001 Laureus World Alternative Sportsperson of the Year Award. At the awards ceremony, he met Johann Rupert, chairman and founder of Panerai’s parent company, the Richemont Group, who took off the Panerai timepiece he was wearing and presented it to Horn, promising the brand’s lifelong support to the explorer’s future adventures. It was the beginning of a relationship that saw Horn take Panerai to the extremes of the planet. For each subsequent expedition, the brand made a bespoke watch to suit his specifications. In the years that followed, Horn adopted “No Limits” as a personal motto, a philosophy that saw the daredevil conquer new heights, quite literally. In 2006, he became the first man to embark on a 60-day adventure on skis from Russia to the North Pole in the dark Arctic winter, without the use of a dog sled. Among other firsts, Horn also became the first person to hydrospeed down the Colca Canyon in Peru, one of the deepest canyons in the world.

Hiking K2 in the Himalayas

Horn’s recent attempt to summit K2, the world’s second-highest mountain at 8,611 metres, although unsuccessful, was lauded as he had to turn back only 200 metres away from the peak due to bad weather. In 2008, with Panerai’s support, he pioneered the Young Explorers Program to raise awareness about the fragility of the planet. The four-year effort involved selecting an international team of explorers between the ages of 15 and 20 to accompany Horn on different stages of the Pangaea expedition, taking the group to some of the world’s most scenic places. More people have been to the moon than where Horn has gone. With every achievement, he has only proved that his strengths go far beyond his physical abilities – a rare trait that every Panerai ambassador has in common. Heroism runs in the DNA of the brand and Panerai’s association with men of valour can be traced back to the early 1900s, when under the leadership of founder Giovanni Panerai, the maison became the official supplier of technical and precision tools to the Royal Italian Navy. In preparation for World War II, Panerai created its first dive watch to be used exclusively by ocean-faring navy personnel during their underwater operations. It is this chapter in the brand’s history that continues to inspire its collaborations with modern heroes even today. No matter where his adventures have led, a Panerai timepiece has served as Horn’s most reliable companion. He even credits one of his Panerai watches for saving his life during a 2010 attempt to summit Broad Peak on the Pakistan-China border in 2010 when he found himself stuck without pitons (climbing spikes) and oxygen at an altitude of 8,000 metres. Quick thinking led him to use the solid steel dial of his Panerai timepiece as an anchor to abseil down the mountain. He wedged the watch into a crack in the rock and tied a rope around it, descending smoothly, although it meant leaving the watch behind.

With every achievement, Horn has only proved that his strengths go beyond his physical abilities – a rare trait that every Panerai ambassador has in common Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition PAM 984 – 47mm

With his technical requirements considerably different from the brand’s regular consumers, Horn has worked closely with Panerai to develop custom models to suit his specifications. Prior to undertaking the Pole2Pole expedition, the brand created the PAM00719 Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days GMT Pole2Pole. The watch was specifically made out of a single block of metal to ensure that the entire timepiece compresses at the same level to avoid breaking at extreme temperatures. Also, normal watchmaking oils couldn’t be used as they would freeze. The watch also had to be an accurate timekeeper and compass because standard compasses do not work at the poles. Earlier this year, Panerai announced its latest collaboration with Horn, launching two new timepieces – the Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition PAM 984 and the Submersible Mike Horn Edition PAM 985. The latter is a limited edition piece that comes with a once-in-alifetime opportunity – intensive training with Horn among the ice floes of the Arctic. The experience will give participants the chance to get up close to the extremities of nature while also becoming aware of the dangers to our ecosystem caused by human impact – a cause close to his heart. As Horn tackles the last leg of his Pole2Pole adventure this month and readies to head home, it won’t be long before he begins plans for the next expedition. You’d be forgiven for thinking that crash landing while paragliding over Machu Pichu, losing fingertips to frostbite, or nearly being shot by a death squad in the Democratic Republic of Congo would deter even the dauntless, but not Horn. He has vowed to tread on until he can’t climb, dive, ski, sled or trek anymore. But these narrow escapes are not taken for granted. Instead, Horn considers himself having had a full life and found the sense of being complete. He believes that as long as he’s alive, it’s a sign to keep his adventures ticking on.

Inspired by Mike Horn’s worthy cause to protect the planet, care has been taken to avoid the use of natural resources in the creation of this timepiece. The 47mm case is made of EcoTitanium™, a recycled material first introduced to the world of watchmaking by Panerai. Water-resistant to a depth of 300 metres, it features a unidirectional rotating bezel, which enables the duration of each dive to be precisely calculated. Legibility in the dark is guaranteed by the use of generous quantities of green Super-LumiNova® on the index markers and the large skeleton hands, which stand out strongly against the black dial. The caseback is engraved with Horn’s signature and creatures that inhabit the oceans, a nod to Horn’s playground.

Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition PAM 985 – 47mm This professional diver’s watch is a limited edition model available in only 19 pieces around the world. What makes this timepiece unique from the PAM 984 is the blue strap, which is crafted from a special material obtained from recycled PET. The luminous substance used on the dial and the rotating bezel is also blue in colour, celebrating Horn’s love of the ocean. The fortunate few who acquire this timepiece will enjoy the chance to train under Horn for a few days among the ice floes of the Arctic.

Taste of Thailand ———

Anantara Eastern Mangroves’ executive chef, Idin Asmitha, discusses culinary philosophies and Thai flavours

Set amidst the UAE capital’s protected mangrove district, Anantara Eastern Mangroves Hotel Abu Dhabi stands out for its five-star service. The hotel’s buzzing vibe, thanks to its central city location, is balanced with tranquil mangrove views in its backdrop. Making the most of this setting, Anantara Eastern Mangroves offers dining options catering for every taste. Drawing from the brand’s Thai roots, the signature restaurant Pachaylen offers an authentic experience with traditional Thai flavours. Specialities from all over the world can be found at Ingredients, while The Pool Deck hosts Mediterranean feasts. We speak to executive chef, Idin Asmitha, who takes us behind the scenes for a glimpse into the hotel’s diverse culinary offering. How did you discover your passion for cooking? “I have fond memories of helping my mother fix our family dinners. I learnt so much from her while we prepared all our meals from scratch and I still vividly recall every

dish she taught me to cook. It was those moments spent in the kitchen that ignited my passion for cooking. During this early training at home, I also learnt that adding a personal touch to the recipe makes your dish a success – a philosophy that sees me through my work even today. Following instructions is easy but it is that unique personal style that works as a special ingredient, making a dish extraordinary.” Tell us more about your role at Anantara Eastern Mangroves “As executive chef, my primary responsibility is to oversee the hotel’s culinary operations. Maintaining the brand’s standards to the highest levels possible with the work we do in the kitchens is also an integral part of my role. This involves many different components, including planning new menus, sourcing ingredients from the best suppliers, studying market trends, monitoring local competition, looking after speciality restaurants, ensuring consistency and helming our banqueting operations. While this might sound routine, every moment at the hotel is as eventful as the next and no two days look alike. There is always something different to look forward to every day, which keeps me going, and something new and exciting to bring to the table, quite literally.”

Ingredients, Anantara Eastern Mangroves

The hotel boasts some of Abu Dhabi’s most popular restaurants. Could you tell us more about the outlets? “The Anantara brand was born in Thailand and then expanded throughout the world but we remain true to our roots. Our signature Thai restaurant, Pachaylen, serves as the perfect example. The venue has become a favourite among gourmands in the capital, who return time and again to sample our authentic aromatic curries and spicy salads. But, at Anantara, the focus is not only on Thai cuisine. To find success in a culturally diverse landscape, it is important to cater for every taste. Diners will find cuisines from around the world at the hotel. The all-day venue, Ingredients, promises a feast for the senses with international dishes. Our rooftop bar, Impressions, serves Latin American, Japanese and Mexican finger food. At The Pool Deck, we host barbecue nights with Mediterranean grills against views of the mangroves.” With several outlets, each catering to a different audience, what is the primary philosophy that guides these concepts? “Although distinct in character, the underlying philosophy uniting every dining experience at Anantara is world-class service straight from the heart. We believe that the most amazing stories begin in the kitchen and we want our diners to take a fond memory home with them. Quality is the highest priority as it can instantly win over an audience. But the little things also matter. We interact with every guest, offer five-star service and create an ambience that evokes luxury to make sure the setting contributes to the overall experience.” With fierce competition on Abu Dhabi’s dining scene, how do the venues at the hotel stand out? “Authenticity is the key. Take Pachaylen, for instance. We try to keep the experience as authentic as possible with classic flavours, a traditional setting and knowledgeable staff. And it all comes together beautifully.”

Mazi launched a little over a month ago at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort

After a slew of Greek restaurant openings in Dubai this year, Abu Dhabi has followed suit with Notting Hill import Mazi. The Greek haunt launched a little over a month ago at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi, and is gradually gaining the UAE capital’s attention. Bringing something a little different to the emirate’s vibrant Saadiyat Island district, Mazi mirrors the culinary culture of Greece. The focus is traditional-meets-contemporary, which is evident not only in the selection of dishes, but also in the décor. The instantly recognisable blue and white theme gets a luxurious upgrade with deeper shades and touches of gold. Mood lighting enhances the setting indoors while the rustic al fresco deck transports you to a quaint (yet luxe) Aegean taverna. The name Mazi means together, inspiring the restaurant’s sharing concept, which lends itself to social gatherings with groups looking to spend quality time along with good food. But for smaller parties, the generous portions require you to arrive with serious appetites. We visited on a Friday afternoon and spotted a mix of families and couples. After a warm welcome, in true Greek fashion, we were ushered to a cosy outdoor table for two. To get us started while we browsed the menu, our friendly server brought us a portion of freshly baked herb and garlic bread. The menu is divided into five sections – jars, salads, hot plates, signatures and desserts – and there was plenty that instantly caught the eye. So we were grateful to our server who recommended dishes that had become instant hits with diners. We were told that no visit to Mazi is complete without trying the Greek salad and so we opted to start with the classic. Prepared with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, capers and feta, the dish is topped with barley rusks for that extra crunch. Complementing the subtle flavours of the salad is the selection of jars. A unique concept, guests can choose from up to five jars on the menu featuring flavourful dips that double up

Fresh calamari lightly battered with citrus mayo

as accompaniments throughout your meal. We tried the spicy tiropita, served with broken filo pastry. A creamy blend of soft cheese with hints of leek and chilli, it also paired well with the crispy calamari. Onto our eagerly anticipated mains, our server talked us into trying the octopus, promising it would be like nothing we’d ever tasted before. And he was right! Served on a bed of potato salad with fried capers and olive tapenade, the meat is surprisingly light, fresh and flavourful. If you’ve never tried octopus before, Mazi’s version will turn you into a fan. For dessert, we opted to share the pistachio and mastiha parfait with strawberry and melon coulis as we were told that the dish wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet – perfectly suited to our tastes. It packed quite a combination of flavours with the tanginess of the coulis offsetting the creaminess of the parfait, making for a sweet ending to an afternoon with Mazi’s best Greek renditions. ESCAPES GERMANY From festive-themed fare to arts, crafts and entertainment for the family, winter magic is all around at Germany’s famed Christmas markets. There is never a shortage of enchanting activities during this special time of year and the setting evokes a truly magical White Christmas. Some of the country’s biggest highlights during the season include Berlin’s festive market, with its backdrop of the baroque Charlottenburg Palace, and Cologne’s winding streets, dotted with stalls along the river Rhine. The city of Dresden, home to the world’s oldest Christmas market, dating back to 1434AD, is also well worth a visit. To plan your next escape  800 CONCIERGE or  myconcierge.com.

Paris after dark ——

In the light of day and the dark of night, the French capital remains one of Europe’s most picturesque cities. Even the most mundane of streets come alive on a midnight walk in Paris

It’s hard to not fall in love with a city like Paris. Endlessly praised for its charms by poets, playwrights, artists and writers, France’s capital resonates with an allure that only a few places in the world share. Be it the rich history, gastronomy or dynamic vibe, a single visit to this European jewel is never enough. By day, there’s something interesting to discover at every turn. But when the sun sets and the tirelessly meandering tourists

retreat for the night, Paris dons a whole new personality. Gone are the crowds and queues lining up before monuments; the city becomes your very own playground. Wherever you go, you’ll find ancient buildings, famous arches and fountains illuminated by thousands of flickering lights. And some of Paris’ best-kept secrets, known only to the locals, slowly start to come alive.

Le Paris café

During our recent visit – which wasn’t our first – we were keen to explore a side of Paris that the locals prefer to keep to themselves. One evening, we came across a group of friendly Parisians on the banks of the river Seine, who suggested taking a midnight stroll around the city for a delightfully different experience. While evening tours are quite popular, only a handful of visitors prefer to discover the city at their own pace at midnight. As you meander down the streets, Paris unveils itself to you in new and interesting ways. We began our midnight stroll at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Under Paris’ night sky, reflections from the eternal flame flickered on the cold stone walls, lighting up the names of French war heroes. A few steps away from the memorial lies the avenue of Champs Elysee, known to be one of the world’s most expensive strips of real estate. As Paris’s famous upscale shopping street, the world’s best brands are present here. We walked past the closed stores and peered into the display windows of Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Dior, Valentino and Nina Ricci with not a single shopper in sight. On the western end of the avenue, the Arc de Triomphe stands tall as the star of the juncture from which 12 different avenues branch out. A major tourist draw, we found it impossible to get the best angle for a photograph without the crowds by day. But at this hour of the night, that perfect shot was guaranteed. A few blocks down, we turned right onto Winston Churchill avenue. Here we found Nef du Grand Palais and the Petit Palais, both of which were built for the Universal Exhibition in 1900.

Ironically, the light can sometimes be overwhelming in the city of lights, so much so that it becomes impossible to spot a single star in the night sky. As much as we enjoyed every moment discovering an illuminated Paris without the crowds, nothing compared to the sense of escape we felt far away from the heart of the city, where the glare from all the lights faded. On this secluded eastern stretch of Paris, we found the perfect spot to draw our midnight walk to a close at the beautiful Bois de Vincennes, as we endlessly gazed into the night sky and lost all sense of time taking in the light of millions of twinkling stars. Moulin Rouge

From this point, you can easily walk across to the nearest bank of the Seine, but our local friends told us that the left bank of the river had a lot more to offer. So we walked down the street and across the Pont de la Concorde to get to the other side. Once a hub for artists and writers, the bohemian vibe is palpable on the other side of the Seine. And although it’s the same city, we were told that the food here would be quite unlike anything we would find in all of Paris. It was surprising to discover that many restaurants were still open at this hour and shut only by 2am. The street was dotted with jazz clubs, wine bars and cosy cafés but feeling the need to refuel after all those steps, we settled down for a hearty dinner with traditional French food at Chez Papa Jazz Club. The smooth jazz tunes added to that midnight magic vibe and we wanted to linger for longer after tucking into some deliciously tender veal and grilled prawns. But we continued strolling along the banks as we couldn’t get enough of the dreamy setting. The Garden of Versailles was on our list of places to visit at night as we were eager to catch the light show that takes place on Saturdays with illuminated installations, laser beams and fireworks. Instead, we opted to visit the lesser-explored Bois de Vincennes on the eastern border of the city that was recommended to us, although getting there required us to hop into a taxi for a 20-minute ride. The park is open around the clock but mosts tourists prefer to visit during the day to get away from the chaos of the city. However, it is not commonly known that Bois de Vincennes is a great spot for stargazers.

Karim Abdelhamid As the Intercontinental Dubai Festival City properties prepare for a lively festive season, hotel manager, Karim Abdelhamid, tells us how Dubai keeps him going

Dubai is constantly evolving; it’s a modern metropolis that’s always on the go. This vibrant spirit is what drives me to be creative and remain curious. The emirate has raised the bar with the standard of living it offers, encouraging everyone who calls Dubai their home to always give it their best. With the competition at an all-time high, it’s only natural to strive for excellence constantly. Although I am an expatriate, Dubai feels like a home away from home. Its safety and security are second to none, which makes the city a wonderful place for families. When work doesn’t keep me busy, I enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family. We enjoy exploring the region together and everything it has to offer. Going horseback riding is one of our favourite weekend activities. But when the temperatures drop, hitting the beach is high on our list of things to do. And with such a stunning coastline, we love trying new beachside hangouts every weekend. Dining in Dubai is another activity we enjoy as a family. I have a weakness for Italian food and I love trying out new venues. Il Borro Tuscan Bistro Dubai has remained one of my favourites since it first launched a few years ago. Pierre’s Bistro & Bar at InterContinental Dubai Festival City is also an exceptional venue, offering an extensive menu of home-style French food, curated by celebrity chef Pierre Gagnaire himself. What I love the most about living in Dubai is that there’s something for everyone to enjoy. It’s hard to imagine that you can experience the world’s best beaches and camp among endless golden dunes in the same locale. Also, the city’s strategic location on the world map means easy access to some of the most beautiful countries in the world, including Oman, which is just a short drive away. But the UAE itself has many hidden gems to discover in each of the emirates. From cultural landmarks to spectacular scenery, including the rugged landscape of the Al Hajar Mountains and the lush green wadis, there could never be a dull moment in the UAE.  intercontinental.com/dubaifestival
