Dubai Design Week

A culture for nurturing creativity has been adopted by the UAE, with the introduction of several programmes for upcoming artists Dubai Design Week: Nature in Motion, 2021, Ahmed El-Sharabassy

Set against the backdrop of some of the world’s most artistic architectural marvels, the UAE’s creative scene has blossomed over the last decade. Dubai and Abu Dhabi, in particular, have played a significant role in cementing the country’s status on the global creative stage. Not only have gallery districts been established across the emirates – from Alserkal Avenue to Dubai Design District (d3) – but dedicated hubs, such as the renowned Louvre Abu Dhabi, have opened to the world, with the long-awaited Guggenheim Abu Dhabi on the way. More importantly, a culture for nurturing creativity has been adopted by the emirates, with the introduction of several art programmes, such as Dubai Design Week, Abu Dhabi Art, Art Dubai and World Art Dubai, to cater to established and upcoming artists from all over the world. This November, art season makes its comeback with the return of two prestigious events on the UAE’s creative calendar. The Middle East’s leading design fair, Dubai Design Week, will run from November 8 to 13, 2021, celebrating regional design and creativity. While in the UAE capital, the annual art fair, Abu Dhabi Art, will mark its first physical event since the onset of the pandemic, with an in-person exhibition running from November 17 to 21, 2021.

Dubai Design Week

A leading platform in the Middle East championing regional design and creativity, Dubai Design Week returns for its seventh edition, featuring an extensive programme of exhibitions, installations, special commissions and activities for creative enthusiasts of all ages. Taking place at its main hub in Dubai Design District (d3), the event will also see activities across key locations in the city. This year’s theme underscores sustainability through restorative and circular design, which is also a key focus of Expo 2020 Dubai. Highlights from the fair include the return of Downtown Design, the leading event for the Middle Eastern design market, which shines a light on small-scale, limited edition and bespoke design solutions from regional brands. The headline commission, Abwab, will showcase the latest innovations in contemporary architecture, under the theme of regenerative and restorative design. In an initiative led by Global Grad Show, the MENA Grad Show will highlight the most innovative social impact projects from the Middle East and North Africa, focusing on solutions to improve and transform lives. And in support of the creative community in Lebanon, the Beirut Concept Store will turn the spotlight on rising and established Lebanese talent. Another interesting showcase for audiences this year is the 2040: d3 Architecture Exhibition, which will teleport visitors to the next 20 years of Dubai through stunning architectural installations.  dubaidesignweek.ae

After being held as a virtual event in 2020, Abu Dhabi Art will return to its physical form this year at Manarat Al Saadiyat. This annual event has become a pivotal part of the region’s art calendar and celebrates the UAE’s creative scene. This year’s fair will welcome galleries from across the globe. Visitors can expect an inspirational showcase of sculptures, installations, artefacts and paintings alongside an educational programme of talks and events aimed at younger artists looking to make a name for themselves in the art world. Each year, distinguished guest curators work closely with a number of galleries exhibiting at the fair to present curated gallery sectors and programmes. This year, Simon Njami and Rose Lejeune have been chosen as the guest curators, after having contributed to the virtual edition of the fair in 2020. Drawing connections between artists through the language of music, Njami’s sector will spotlight galleries under a new curatorial framework titled Kind of Blue, referencing Miles Davis’s album from the late 1950s. Through his showcase, Njami will position the genre of jazz as a metaphor for the open-ended parameters of the exhibition. Kind of Blue likens galleries to orchestras, each presenting musicians who together create a collective project that is wider than their singular expression. Meanwhile, guest curator Rose Lejeune will bring together a new performing arts programme at Abu Dhabi Art featuring a diverse line-up of immersive acts. Each commissioned artist will select a site for a live performance in various locations across the UAE capital and also at the fair, with the aim of offering an abstract and poetic experience against the backdrop of unique sculptural landmarks and sceneries around the city. Abu Dhabi Art’s agenda extends beyond the annual five-day fair at Manarat Al Saadiyat, with this year’s edition welcoming a number of exhibitions and commissions that will continue beyond the fair walls. Taking place as part of the initiative, the Beyond: Artist Commissions programme will see creative works displayed at historic and cultural sites across the emirate. The exhibition will launch during the fair but will remain open for three months as part of Abu Dhabi Art’s year-round programming.  abudhabiart.ae

A place for the arts —— Discover The Arts Club Dubai in DIFC – the first international outpost of the London concept that opened its doors in the late 1800s

The Arts Club Dubai brasserie

With a storied past that dates back to 19th-century London, The Arts Club served as a meeting place for individuals immersed in the fields of art, literature and the sciences. Originally founded in 1863, it’s the ultimate icon of creative heritage, with notable members, including Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hughes, Franz Liszt, Auguste Rodin and more, having walked through its doors. From its original home on London’s Hanover Square to its present location in an 18th-century mansion in Mayfair, the club has remained a haven for many distinguished figures through the centuries. Even today, the prestigious venue champions a unique lifestyle experience, allowing members to entertain their guests in its sleek surrounds, with exceptional dining choices. Yet, the focus on art and culture is at its core, as a tribute to its early members, who made a positive impact on society through the exchange of creative and entrepreneurial ideas at the hub. It is only fitting that The Arts Club chose to expand with its first international outpost in Dubai, where the creative landscape has seen several innovative concepts come to life and completely transform the city. The venue opened its doors to members last year, inviting those involved in the arts, music, literature, design, science, technology, health, philanthropy, law, finance and fashion to enjoy its immersive offerings.

Artistic showcase

Housed in the heart of DIFC in the ICD Brookfield Place development, The Arts Club Dubai spans an impressive 65,000 square feet and is set over four f loors. Its unique setting is designed to provide its members with an extension to their own homes: elegant, comfortable, versatile and surrounded by like-minded individuals therein. In keeping with its sister outpost, the club will house a permanent art collection, showcasing stunning works created by established and upcoming artists from the Middle East. Rotating exhibitions are also organised regularly to further champion arts in the region, while under the club’s Artists Commission programme, the creative community can contribute to the venue’s contemporary art collection, exhibitions and events. The first of its kind in the Middle East, the club endeavours to support the artistic landscape of the region with a diverse programme of weekly events that has been designed to appeal to a wide variety of interests. On the agenda is everything from talks, panel discussions and debates to artist studio visits, live music performances, creative workshops, exclusive screenings and more.

Off the beaten path ——

Sand Sherpa Special Reserve is a genuine camping experience with a warm welcome on chilly desert nights Words by Leanne O’Rourkes

Just beyond Dubai’s winter fog and dust-covered skyscrapers, a herd of Arabian oryx feeds on desert grasses. Among the orange-tinged sea of sand dunes, their pristine white coats are easily identified by onlookers in a four-wheel-drive convoy. Along with gazelles and countless other native species, the oryx is part of the success story of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) – a spectacular restored natural environment, which has welcomed many a curious visitor. But for the f irst time in its 20-year history, visitors can drive their own vehicles through the unique area, under the expert guidance of the Sand Sherpa team. Abandoning the destructive mentality of carving up sand dunes, the guides help drivers minimise environmental damage, while still enjoying the rugged adventure that is synonymous with this region. Following a briefing in the shade of a palm tree oasis, Sand Sherpa leads the group along a private track. Voices issue noteworthy facts via handheld radios, as kids stare wide-eyed through open windows in a race to spot the first animal. It doesn’t take long. Thanks to government efforts to exclude camels and remove weeds, wildlife has thrived here. Vegetation is abundant and species, like the majestic oryx, have been brought back from the brink of local extinction. The picturesque location of Sand Sherpa’s exclusive overnight campsite contrasts with the open exposure of the desert landscape. Sand is still between your toes but ancient ghaf trees surround and tower up to 20 metres above your head. Each group has its own private camping trailer with everything you need, from chairs to cooking pots and even the kitchen sink (well, a tub with washing liquid, because after all, this is camping). Custom-designed with a ‘go anywhere’ attitude, the converted military trailers can also be arranged together to cater for larger groups. They’re a tough piece of kit, but they’re stylish, with spacious rooftop tents, fridges and built-in showers for those who prefer privacy to the onsite facilities.

Falconry demonstration

The picturesque location of Sand Sherpa’s exclusive overnight campsite contrasts with the open exposure of the desert While kids climb steep dunes and explore, you can cook your favourite food on your personal grill or throw something on the bespoke asado grill that glows among the ambient lanterns. Like every good campsite, there are good campfires. Here, they don’t touch the sand, fitting with the ‘leave no trace’ policy. Each unit has an upcycled washing machine fire, or you can grab a couch and gather around the cosy firepit that forms the hub of the camp community. After a comfy sleep under the stars, you have the option of lying in or rising with the sun, which is highly recommended. When you emerge on top of this expansive world in the serene, cool morning, you can really feel the dust settle and the city far behind you. Plus, you don’t want to miss the indisputable highlight: the hawk walk. In the hands of one of Royal Shaheen’s knowledgeable falcon-trainers and Sally the hawk, this is where the desert comes alive. Tracks galore reveal the multitude of wildlife that visited overnight and the reasons why this place is worth conserving. Sally steals the show, putting on a captivating interactive aerial display, with a side serving of environmental education. As the sun rises along with the temperature, the bitterness of having to leave is sweetened by the fact that you don’t need to repack and unpack the camping gear. Instead, you’ll be home in a f lash and relaxing just a little more.  sandsherpa.com Sand Sherpa Special Reserve campsite

And now that Expo 2020 Dubai has finally opened its doors, the city has truly pulled out all the stops to amaze residents and visitors with new venues that promise to entertain one and all.

AIN DUBAI The hotly anticipated Ain Dubai joined a long list of the city’s record-breaking attractions when it opened to the public in October. Located on Bluewaters island, the giant observation wheel, which stands at a height of 250 metres, is the highest and largest of its kind in the world. A remarkable feat of construction, Ain Dubai will offer 360-degree views of the emirate’s iconic skyline and landmarks during the 38-minute ride in one of its pods.  aindubai.com

For many, Ramadan is primarily characterised by fasting – the practice of abstaining from all food and drink between the hours of sunrise and sunset. While this is certainly an important part of the Ramadan experience, it is just one of the many elements that come together during the holy month as Muslims turn their gaze inwards and reflect on their faith. This special time of year is also a unique opportunity for visitors to learn more about the local culture and customs while joining in some cherished traditions. Known as the holy month, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and always starts two weeks earlier than the previous year. The exact date of the beginning of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new moon or ‘hilal’. When the slight crescent makes its appearance in the evening sky, the start of the holy month is announced. The following morning, at the first light of dawn, fasting commences. This year, Ramadan is due to fall on April 12 or as soon as the official Moon Sighting Committee spots the hilal. At the end of the month, when the hilal is once again observed, the three-day Eid Al Fitr festival to break the fast begins. Al Barsha Mosque

The heart of Expo ——

Discover Al Wasl Plaza – the centrepiece of Expo 2020 Dubai

Sprawling across 4.38 square kilometres in Dubai South, a single visit won’t be enough to explore everything that Expo 2020 Dubai has to offer. But if there’s one thing that will be impossible to miss on every visit, it’s the striking Al Wasl Dome, which has become the site’s identifying marker. Al Wasl Plaza was inaugurated in January 2020, but the spectacle truly came to life during the show’s opening ceremony on September 30. A 3,000member strong audience and millions of spectators across the globe watched in awe as the show was officially declared open against the mesmerising backdrop of the Al Wasl Dome. Stunning sights were projected on its surface, taking audiences on a journey across different worlds, from a lush forest to the Milky Way and more. The iconic centrepiece of the show, the attraction began making waves even before the event opened to visitors on October 1. Described as the ‘crown jewel’ of Expo 2020 Dubai, Al Wasl Plaza is a remarkable feat of engineering. It links the site’s three Thematic Districts, which ref lect the subthemes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability, and, hence, is aptly named after the Arabic word for ‘connection’. It signifies a meeting of the site’s pathways and fits with the event’s aim to bring people together from all over the world. The domed trellis of Al Wasl Plaza is 130 metres wide and 65 metres high, and it weighs an incredible 2,544 tonnes. Its design was inspired by an ancient elaborately fashioned gold ring found at Saruq Al Hadid, an

Past meets present ——

Alif - The Mobility Pavilion

Even before Expo 2020 Dubai opened its doors on October 1, 2021, the mega event’s iconic architecture was already making waves globally. From the grand Al Wasl Plaza and its crowning dome to the surreal entry portals, the stunning structures at the event site have captured the world’s attention, thanks to their striking design. Perhaps, one of the most futuristic-looking of them all is Alif – The Mobility Pavilion, instantly recognisable as an Expo icon with its extraordinary shape and sleek façade. Conceived by the awardwinning British architectural engineering firm Foster + Partners, the structure appears to almost f loat on air from a distance. Its curved exterior, wrapped in polished, stainless steel cladding, ref lects activity from the surrounding areas, and it was designed as such to evoke a sense of movement. It is only fitting, given that the experiences inside bring stories of global mobility to life in inspiring and immersive ways. The pavilion especially highlights the pivotal role that the UAE and the Arab world have played in advancing human mobility, from ancient exploration several millennia ago through to ambitious space pursuits of the future.

Journey to the past

At Alif – The Mobility Pavilion, the experience begins 4,500 years ago in an ancient settlement of Saruq Al Hadid in the Dubai desert. In its heyday, this Bedouin colony shared a strategic trade relationship with the rest of the Middle East, the Levant and West Asia. Visitors will be able to discover how early trade in the region contributed to the development of the Arab world before they are transported to ninth-century Baghdad aboard an elevated platform to the House of Wisdom. From here, celebrated world explorers and navigators then steal the spotlight with towering nine-metre-tall photo-realistic figures depicting historical giants from the Golden Age of Arab Civilisation. Visitors can delve deeper into the stories of Ibn Majid and Ibn Battuta and learn about their contributions that led to advances in world exploration and influenced global mobility through the centuries.

Set sights on the future

The journey then leaps forward straight into the 21st century, where visitors will enter a data-driven virtual world before being propelled into a city of the future. Here, visitors will be able to take a peek at the evolution of mobility and where it may potentially lead humankind in the decades to come. In focus is the inspiring story of Dubai and its remarkable transformation from a fishing village to a modern metropolis. As visitors journey along, the emirate and the UAE’s incredible progress over the past 50 years comes to light. The experience particularly highlights the nation’s contributions to several mobility-related fields, including aviation, logistics and smart cities, and extending into the solar system through the UAE’s space programme and the Hope Mission to Mars. Aside from the immersive journey inside the structure, the pavilion and its grounds feature a partly underground, partly open-air 330-metre track that allows visitors to see cutting-edge mobility devices in action. Marjan Faraidooni, Chief Experience Officer, Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “We are proud that this must-see pavilion celebrates the Arab world as a leading light in mobility across the ages, changing perceptions of what this region has achieved. We hope that visitors, especially young Arabs, will leave this experience inspired – realising that anything is possible, motivated to make a difference in our world and looking with optimism to a future when we connect and work together on a global scale.”

Omega Seamaster Diver 300m as seen in GoldenEye (1995)

I N S I D E S T O RY / S H O P

An enduring bond —— In Daniel Craig’s latest (and last) portrayal as James Bond, the British superspy embarks on yet another perilous mission, armed with the trusty Omega Seamaster on his wrist – a connection that goes back more than two decades It has been 26 years since James Bond first wore an Omega watch. When GoldenEye hit the screens in 1995 with Pierce Brosnan in the starring role, it marked the beginning of a lasting relationship with the Swiss marque. And with Daniel Craig’s latest outing as the British superspy in No Time to Die, Omega marks its ninth on-screen appearance on 007’s wrist. Ever since the first Bond movie was released in 1962, the titular hero’s choice of luxury goods has strongly inf luenced the world of fashion. From his attire to his props, everything associated with the impeccably dressed, timelessly stylish secret agent went on to dictate global style trends, especially his timepieces, which now generate quite the same buzz as the movies themselves. Just like every single piece in his kit, the choice of Omega for his timepiece was no ordinary occurrence (and neither a commercial consideration). In fact, in Ian Fleming’s books and the early films, James Bond donned a range of watches. But when Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming came on board in the 90s, she used the opportunity to rethink his sartorial sensibilities. She envisioned a more modern, European James Bond, and so for Brosnan’s debut, traded the English Savile Row for Italian tailoring from Brioni and sought a watch to match. According to Hemming, an Omega wristwatch proved ideal because of the watchmaker’s historical connections to the Royal Navy, in which the character of James Bond served as a Commander. The designer drew inspiration from her father, who served in the Royal Air Force, and his friends from the Royal Navy, who, as she remembers, sported the Swiss brand on their wrists.

Omega Seamaster Diver 300m 007 edition

Daniel Craig as James Bond in No Time to Die

The new Omega Seamaster Diver 300m 007 edition was developed with input from Daniel Craig himself “I remember as a child one (of my father’s friends) often visiting us, and he always wore this Omega, which fascinated me – this unusually sporty design that looked as though it was built for purpose. It’s the small details that really matter. So one of the early tasks in designing the new Bond, Pierce Brosnan, I went to a props and hand props meeting and argued for the use of Omega,” said Hemming. “I was convinced that Commander Bond, a naval man, a diver and a discreet gentleman of the world would wear the Seamaster with the blue dial,” she added, referring to Brosnan’s first on-screen appearance wearing the Omega Seamaster 300m Quartz Professional.

conditions of the front lines. Tens of thousands of soldiers, pilots and sailors were issued a ‘W.W.W.’ Omega timepiece, which stands for ‘watch, wrist, waterproof’ and is British Army Code for a Ministry of Defence timepiece. These watches were also distinguished by a pheon on the case back, dial or both, indicating that the item was a property of the UK government. As it was built for action, its storied heritage made Omega the perfect choice for a British civil servant and former naval officer.

A fitting choice

From GoldenEye to Die Another Day, Brosnan continued to wear Omega Seamasters in every subsequent film. And when he passed the baton to Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, the English actor kept up the tradition. Over the years, Omega has released limited edition pieces, with special features that honour 007 and his 50-year legacy of genre-defining movies. And now, for his final portrayal of the British spy in No Time to Die, a new iteration of the illustrious Seamaster is brought to the screen. Craig’s latest venture marks the 25th off icial James Bond f ilm, and the new Seamaster Diver 300m 007 edition, which made its debut in the movie, is

James Bond’s very first Omega timepiece was a contemporary take on the brand’s watches that were issued to Royal Navy divers in the late 1960s. But the venerable Swiss maison’s connection with the military dates back to 1940, when Omega was commissioned as the single largest supplier of watches for the British armed forces and its allies. To meet the volume and precision requirements of the order, Omega fast-tracked its production of water-resistant, shockproof and antimagnetic watches, resulting in a reliable and sturdy companion amidst the uncompromising

SPECIAL EDITION SEAMASTERS Since 1995, James Bond has worn an Omega Seamaster in every film. Honouring 007 and his cinematic legacy, the Swiss brand has created a series of limited edition timepieces over the years, with special features well suited to a superspy

SEAMASTER DIVER 300M “COMMANDER’S WATCH” LIMITED EDITION

Omega’s “Commander’s Watch” salutes the ensign colours of the British Royal Navy in its design. Touches of white, blue and red are found throughout the watch, creating a suave and stately look.

SEAMASTER DIVER 300M CO‑AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER 42MM JAMES BOND LIMITED EDITION

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, this timepiece pays tribute to Omega’s favourite spy and is limited to just 7,007 pieces.

now available to all James Bond fans and Omega patrons. Retaining all the characteristics of the 1960s defence standard, it was developed with input from Craig himself. The timepiece is crafted out of lightweight Grade 2 titanium and measures 42mm. It features the iconic sword hards, a fully hashed bezel and a tropical brown aluminium bezel ring and dial. A pheon is found on the dial, nodding to the brand’s heritage of outfitting the British armed forces. Slightly slimmer than the standard Diver 300m models, thanks to the doming of the sapphire-crystal glass, it is presented on a Grade 2 titanium mesh bracelet with an adjustable buckle. Powering the timepiece is Omega’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer 8806, which has achieved the industry’s highest standards of precision, chronometric performance and magnetic resistance. With its covetable features, one can’t help but wonder why a covert ops agent would wear such a recognisable, standout piece. Wouldn’t something a bit more pedestrian be suited to his clandestine undertakings? Maybe so, but Bond’s sartorial sensibilities have always kept up with the times – much like his ultramodern gadgets. True to form, he would never sacrifice his safety – or his style!

SEAMASTER DIVER 300M CO‑AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER 42MM “JAMES BOND” NUMBERED EDITION

In addition to the latest titanium 007 timepiece, Omega has also produced a “James Bond” numbered limited edition piece in an exclusive platinum-gold case. The watch’s sleek black enamel dial features 007’s spiralling gun barrel motif in white gold, while other references include the Bond family coat of arms at 12 o’clock, which is also laser-engraved with platinum on the open sapphire crystal caseback.

Top chef ——— Award-winning chef Heinz Beck drops in at his Dubai venue, Social by Heinz Beck at Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah, to chat Michelin stars, menu inspirations and more

Parmigiana

Petit fours

Chef Heinz Beck is a busy man. When he isn’t creating new recipes behind the scenes in his kitchen, he’s hosting exclusive chef’s table events at his sought-after restaurants. The award-winning culinary genius has fronted several eateries all over the world, from Tuscany and Algarve to Rome, where he is currently based at the three-Michelin-starred La Pergola Restaurant. And he recently made a special appearance at his Dubai outpost, Social by Heinz Beck, to host an exclusive culinary experience featuring never-before presented dishes. His popular Dubai venue is a firm favourite on the emirate’s dining scene, championing contemporary, high-end Italian cuisine. There is a lightness and freshness to the menu that puts it a cut above its contemporaries. Here, the convivial chef tells us about his menu updates for the season, his thoughts on the city’s dining scene and the philosophy at the heart of his culinary creations – health and wellness through food. Three Michelin stars to your name... how does that feel? “We have three Michelin stars in Rome for La Pergola Restaurant. It was the very first restaurant I opened in Italy and I am very proud of how far we’ve come.” Do you think Dubai is ready for the Michelin guide? “I’m not sure if and when the Michelin guide will come to Dubai, but when it does, it will be ideal for us. However, at the end of the day, it’s your customers who will show you whether or not you’re doing things the right way. We have a very loyal customer base, and a big percentage of our clientele comes from outside the hotel, which I think is a great sign of our quality.”

How did you discover your passion for cooking? “I always wanted to be a painter but my father didn’t agree with my decision to pursue the arts. Instead, he asked me to study something ‘serious’ like medicine or economics. But I remained firm and said that if I couldn’t go to art college, I wouldn’t go to university at all. He then recommended that I take up a summer job and the first thing I turned to was cooking, which then took me to hotel school. At first, I simply studied without believing in the potential of the work but then I began to see the creative side of the culinary world and its connection with nature. I would visit food producers and suppliers in Italy to source fresh fruit and vegetables, walk into their fields, look around and taste the ingredients. It revealed a different way of life that I was fascinated by.” Tell us more about your culinary philosophy. “We are a bit different from the others because we champion a more creative approach to Italian cuisine. For the past 20 years, I have been working with health and food researchers who study how we must eat in order to live better. This makes a lot of difference because I strongly believe that we are what we eat. The Greek physician Hippocrates said, ‘Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.’ Unfortunately, this knowledge was lost somewhere along the way. But, eating healthy has always been important, especially with everything going on in the world. And that is why the concept of health and wellness through food is at the core of our operations in the kitchens.”

“The concept of health and wellness through food is at the core of our operations in the kitchens”

Chef Heinz Beck

What’s new on the menu at Social by Heinz Beck? “Whenever I visit, we prepare new dishes because I time my arrival with the change in seasons. With winter soon approaching, it’s the perfect time to put something new on the table. And so we are currently working on a sumptuous winter menu at Social by Heinz Beck. As with all our restaurants, the role of science and health is becoming increasingly inf luential in our decisions, where the concept of quality now includes a lot of new and different perspectives. Every time I come back to Dubai, I try to visit local farmers and suppliers to gain a better understanding of their work ethic and farming techniques, and to select the best ingredients. We must respect the raw material and its seasonality to get the best f lavour and the best nutritional intake as we head towards the cooler months. Through our menus, our guests will enjoy the best flavours of the season: from pumpkin and kale to beetroot and white truff le.” So do you have a favourite dish on the menu? “Would you ever ask a mother to choose her favourite child? If I wouldn’t love all my dishes, I wouldn’t have put them on the menu. Add to this the fact that we change menus frequently and you might not find the same dish on your next visit. I personally would eat them all, so maybe I would suggest coming more often instead to taste all our dishes, and then you wouldn’t have to choose a favourite.” Herb-crusted lamb with winter root vegetables

Airborne escapes

One of the best ways to take in Dubai’s iconic sights is soaring above the city with a helicopter f light. The Dubai-based entrepreneur shares her take on life in the city and its neighbouring emirates

Dubai is my home and I am privileged to have been born in this beautiful city. Now more than ever, this is such a proud moment for all of us that call the UAE home, with Expo 2020 Dubai underway. It’s a stellar accomplishment for the country and the site is absolutely breathtaking. Just decades ago, the UAE was nothing but sand dunes, yet, today, we have some of the world’s most iconic architecture, luxurious hotels and experiences you can’t find elsewhere. The country has also inspired several entrepreneur success stories, cementing its status as a land of promise and opportunities. I’m grateful that this city has given me the chance to forge my own path by starting and running my business. Since founding The Grooming Lab – the only distribution company specialising in men’s grooming products in the UAE – the business has expanded rapidly. I appreciate how a woman like me has the freedom to run a business targeting men. Through our daily operations, I come across a diverse set of people; this helps me understand the demands of the industry and inspires me to keep improving and developing the business. With so much going on behind the scenes, free time is a luxury these days (any businesswoman can relate) but there’s always a lot to do in the city. I love that Dubai is home to some of the best dining venues, from casual cafés to five-star restaurants helmed by award-winning chefs from around the world. Also, with a host of shopping spaces, this city is a paradise for those looking to find international brands under one roof. Personally, aside from spending downtime with my family (and my four-legged best friend), I love heading to the desert when the weather cools down. Much like everyone else in the city, we plan evening barbecues in the desert. Nothing compares to enjoying the chilly winter breeze among the dunes with a cosy bonfire to keep you warm! For both residents and visitors alike, the Dubai desert is a must-visit. And a safari is one of the best ways to explore the sands. Dubai is home to some amazing malls and at the top of my list is the Mall of the Emirates closely followed by The Dubai Mall. Visitors should check out the Dubai Aquarium since it is one of a kind, and while there, catch the beautiful Dubai Fountain Show after sunset against the backdrop of the Burj Khalifa. No visit to Dubai is complete without a trip to the other emirates as each has its own unique features. In Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a sight to behold. For the kids and young at heart, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is a must-visit, with its record-breaking roller coasters and games. Those who enjoy the outdoors must explore the serene side of the country. In Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, the mountains offer the ideal backdrop for adventure. The latter is home to Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak which is part of the spectacular Al Hajar mountain range. It is a must-visit for its views from the top and its secluded camping spots that can truly make you feel one with nature.   thegroominglab.me
