IN WITH THE NEW

—— Dubai is an iconic place to welcome the new year. Each year, thousands gather around Burj Khalifa or Palm Jumeirah to watch the fireworks illuminate the city skyline at midnight. This year, the UAE’s northernmost emirate will also compete for the world’s attention once again as it attempts to reach for two more Guinness World Records, adding to its ever-growing list of accolades. In 2019, Ras Al Khaimah secured two Guinness World Records for the longest chain of fireworks and the longest straight line of fireworks on New Year’s Eve. The emirate made headlines yet again in 2020 when it cinched Guinness World Records for the most unmanned aerial vehicles for launching fireworks simultaneously and the longest fireworks waterfall during its New Year’s Eve Gala. This year, the emirate has planned a spectacular 12-minute fireworks display, which will cover a 4.7-kilometre stretch along the waterfront between Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra Village.   raknye.com

Art goes digital ——

Digital technology transformed the art world in the wake of the pandemic, with several international museums inviting visitors to embark on virtual tours that could be accessed from anywhere around the globe. Here in Dubai, the art sector reinvented itself with the opening of two immersive digital art spaces, offering a new and enhanced way to experience art

Technology and art might seem like two distinct disciplines at first glance. But, through the centuries, technology has served as a constant source of inspiration for artists. Not only has humankind’s relationship with science served as a muse in several celebrated works but advances in automation have also provided artists with new tools for expression. Today, the two are inextricably linked, with technology fueling the development and evolution of new art forms. Digital visualisation, in particular, has become an emerging trend that has transformed the sector considerably. In 2018, Tokyo became a forerunner of digital art with the opening of the Mori Building Digital Art Museum – the first of its kind in the world. It was launched by the Japanese art collective, TeamLab, and features 50 technicolour digital artworks inside the colossal 10,000-square-metre space. France then followed suit with the opening of Atelier des Lumières. Nestled in a former foundry in eastern Paris, it completely transformed the canvas with a multisensory experience from Culturespaces, the renowned global manager of monuments, museums and art centres. In less than a year, more than 1.2 million visitors flocked to the museum, and, thanks to its popularity, it allowed Culturespaces to expand around the world. Here in Dubai, the year 2020 saw the opening of the Theatre of Digital Art in Souk Madinat Jumeirah, while earlier in 2021, the region’s biggest digital art centre – Infinity des Lumières – opened its doors at The Dubai Mall. With their immersive offering, these incredible spaces have proved that art is not only the object but it is also the experience.

Infinity des Lumières

Step into the region’s biggest immersive digital art gallery at Infinity des Lumières. Spread over an impressive 2,700 square metres within The Dubai Mall, the venue brings classic and contemporary art to life through 130 projectors, 58 speakers and 3,000 digital moving images in high definition. Made possible in the UAE through Culturespaces, visitors can experience an exciting fusion of art, music, architecture, science, state-of-the-art technology and high-tech engineering. Three unique digital exhibitions are currently on display at Infinity des Lumières. Each gives gallery visitors the chance to view and immerse themselves in vibrant images that are embodied through animation, movement, sound and rhythm. The Van Gogh exhibit masterfully showcases the evolution of the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter’s art, from The Potato Eaters (1885), Sunflowers (1888) and Starry Night (1889) to Bedroom at Arles (1889), placing visitors at the heart of each masterpiece. With Dreamed Japan, visitors can step inside a dreamlike space, where the poetically beautiful world of 19th-century Japan is brought to life. Here, Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai’s portraits blend seamlessly with enchanting landscapes and marvels of the sea. Fascinating animations of geishas and samurai warriors bring history into the 21st century, while Hokusai’s iconic waves, sea creatures and soaring lanterns take visitors on a unique adventure through the many marvels of nature. Finally, at Verse, a mesmerising explosion of colours, shapes and sounds enthrals visitors as they journey through the cosmos while listening to the harmonies of an orchestral piece composed by Thomas Vanz and Jonathan Fitas.  infinitylumieres.com

The tranquil waterways surrounding Souk Madinat Jumeirah have provided the ideal setting for Dubai’s Theatre of Digital Art (ToDA). This multisensory, immersive art space became the first digital art gallery in Dubai when it opened its doors in 2020. ToDA’s impressive art space spans over 1,000 square metres with large high-definition screens covering the walls and ceiling. This enables 360-degree image projection on all surfaces, creating a unique exhibition space that makes visitors feel like they are part of the art. The gallery’s digital shows combine stunning music, visual effects and surround sound with classical art, making it one of the most unique ways to experience masterpieces from some of the world’s most notable artists and emerging contemporary creatives. Visitors to the art galler y can discover four unique multimedia showcases at ToDA. The first exhibit, From Monet to Kandinsky. Revolutionary Art, highlights the most important art movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including impressionism, pointillism, post-impressionism, cubism and expressionism. Further inside, Being Van Gogh explores one of the most inf luential figures in the history of western art with a unique show that combines acting with art. The performance shines a light on Vincent Van Gogh’s ambitions and disappointments, his poverty and devotion to work, allowing visitors an up-close glimpse into his world, which showcases how his life was ref lected in his art. A must-visit for fans of the Austrian painter, Klimt & The Impressionists showcases the incredible works of Gustav Klimt alongside pieces by six Impressionist artists, including Claud Monet, Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, August Renoir, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Henri Rousseau. Yet another Klimt showcase, Klimt & Japan highlights the artist’s unique creations along with stunning visuals of the Far Eastern country.  toda.ae

Art in the city —— Discover The Arts Club Dubai in DIFC – the first international outpost of the London concept that opened its doors in the late 1800s

With a storied past that dates back to 19th-century London, The Arts Club served as a meeting place for individuals immersed in the fields of art, literature and the sciences. Originally founded in 1863, it’s the ultimate icon of creative heritage, with notable members, including Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hughes, Franz Liszt, Auguste Rodin and more, having walked through its doors. From its original home on London’s Hanover Square to its present location in an 18th-century mansion in Mayfair, the club has remained a haven for many distinguished figures through the centuries. Even today, the prestigious venue champions a unique lifestyle experience, allowing members to entertain their guests in its sleek surrounds, with exceptional dining choices. Yet, the focus on art and culture is at its core, as a tribute to its early members, who made a positive impact on society through the exchange of creative and entrepreneurial ideas at the hub. It is only fitting that The Arts Club chose to expand with its first international outpost in Dubai, where the creative landscape has seen several innovative concepts come to life and completely transform the city. The venue opened its doors to members in 2020, inviting those involved in the arts, music, literature, design, science, technology, health, philanthropy, law, finance and fashion to enjoy its immersive offerings.

The first of its kind in the Middle East, the club endeavours to support the artistic landscape of the region with a diverse programme of weekly events that has been designed to appeal to a wide variety of interests. On the agenda is everything from talks, panel discussions and debates to artist studio visits, live music performances, creative workshops, exclusive screenings and more.

Room for more

With its area more than twice the size of its London counterpart, The Arts Club Dubai allows plenty of room for entertainment. There are three private dining rooms, five lounges, seven craft cocktail bars, a rooftop terrace (with private cigar cabanas), a sundowner’s terrace and rooftop lounge. There is also a late-night lounge and cigar lounge as well as a blank canvas space for events with three meeting rooms. Completing the experience is a f ive-star gourmet offering, in keeping with its British counterpart. The DIFC venue is home to the famous brasserie from the London import, which joins two homegrown hospitality concepts – a Nikkei restaurant and an Italian venue – promising members a culinary journey on every visit.  theartsclub.ae

Alif - The Mobility Pavilion

Poetry in motion ——

Embark on an engaging journey through time and space, from the Arab world’s intriguing past to a city of the future, at Alif – The Mobility Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai Alif - The Mobility Pavilion

Alif – The Mobility Pavilion is perhaps one of the most eye-catching structures at Expo 2020 Dubai. Instantly recognisable as an Expo icon, thanks to its extraordinary shape and sleek façade, it was conceived by the award-winning architectural engineering firm Foster + Partners. The structure appears to almost float on air from a distance, and its curved exterior, wrapped in polished, stainless steel cladding, ref lects activity from the surrounding areas. The whole concept was planned and executed as such to evoke a sense of movement. It is only fitting, given that the experiences inside bring stories of global mobility to life in inspiring and immersive ways. The pavilion highlights the pivotal role that the UAE and the Arab world have played in advancing human mobility, from ancient exploration several millennia ago through to ambitious space pursuits of the future.

Travel back in time

At Alif – The Mobility Pavilion, the experience begins 4,500 years ago in an ancient settlement of Saruq Al Hadid in the Dubai desert. In its heyday, this Bedouin colony shared a strategic trade relationship with the rest of the Middle East, the Levant and West Asia. Visitors will be able to discover how early trade in the region contributed to the development of the Arab world before they are transported to ninth-century Baghdad aboard an elevated platform to the House of Wisdom. From here, celebrated world explorers and navigators then steal the spotlight with towering nine-metre-tall photo-realistic figures depicting historical giants from the Golden Age of Arab Civilisation. Visitors can delve deeper into the stories of Ibn Majid and Ibn Battuta and learn about their contributions that led to advances in world exploration and influenced global mobility through the centuries. 42

Alif - The Mobility Pavilion

See the future unfold

The journey then leaps forward straight into the 21st century, where visitors will enter a data-driven virtual world before being propelled into a city of the future. Here, visitors will be able to take a peek at the evolution of mobility and where it may potentially lead humankind in the decades to come. In focus is the inspiring stor y of Dubai and its remarkable transformation from a fishing village to a modern metropolis. As visitors journey along, the emirate and the UAE’s incredible progress over the past 50 years comes to light. The experience highlights the nation’s contributions to several mobility-related fields, including aviation, logistics and smart cities, and extends into the solar system through the UAE’s space programme and the Hope Mission to Mars. Aside from the immersive journey inside the structure, the pavilion and its grounds feature a partly underground, partly open-air 330-metre track that allows visitors to see cutting-edge mobility devices in action.

One to watch ——

A. Lange & Söhne commemorates the 27th anniversary of the brand’s rebirth with an all-new model. Considered by many as the ultimate piece for collectors, the ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen” truly stands out

October 24, 1994, has gone down in history as a milestone moment for A. Lange & Söhne. It marked a new beginning for the German watchmaker; a rebirth of sorts following the tragedy that struck down the manufactory during World War II. It was Walter Lange – the great-grandson of Lange & Cie founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange – who took it upon himself to reintroduce the family name to the horological universe. At an age when most retire, Walter Lange (then in his late 60s) partnered with German-Swiss entrepreneur Günter Blümlein in 1990 to honour his great-grandfather’s vision of crafting the world’s f inest watches. Four years later, a new collection – the first after the refounding of the manufactory – was born. Since the launch of this historic collection, the brand has unveiled a series of show-stopping timepieces. And over the years, collectors have expressed much delight in A. Lange & Söhne’s horological masterpieces. This year, to commemorate the rebirth of the brand, the German maison has introduced yet another stunner: the new ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen”. A mere addition to the inventory this is not! It’s a true collector’s piece as it is the most accurate representation of the brand’s watchmaking legacy, combining A. Lange & Söhne’s three most exclusive attributes in a single timepiece.

47

The ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen” Each of the three words in its name – ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen” – stands for three extraordinary feats accomplished by A. Lange & Söhne over the years. The ZEITWERK series took the watchmaking world by storm when it was first unveiled in 2009, thanks to its revolutionary technology and design concept, which introduced the brand’s famed time bridge dial concept. The new watch is yet another brilliant addition to the iconic line. The timepiece is dressed up in honey gold, which is the Saxon brand’s proprietary gold alloy. And adding the finishing touch is the lumen treatment, which refers to the Super-LumiNova on the numerals of the hour and minute disks. The combination of these unique features makes the ZEIT WER K HONEYGOLD “Lumen” the ultimate edition for collectors and timepiece enthusiasts. And it is limited to just 200 pieces worldwide. Beneath the avant-garde dial with the prominent bridge, the numerals on three discs can be faintly discerned. This is followed by a fascinating cycle that begins anew every minute. With a gentle click, at least one of the three numeral discs advances with a jump. It positions at least one new numeral in the display aperture until, at the top of the hour, the ingenious mechanism simultaneously advances all three discs by one step. Many switching cycles can be observed through the sapphire-crystal caseback. For instance, it reveals the hand-engraved balance and escape-wheel cocks.

The time bridge found on the dials of the ZEITWERK models has become one of the most prominent elements of the brand

The revolutionary ZEITWERK

When A. Lange & Söhne’s engineers developed the ZEITWERK, they questioned everything except the mechanical paradigm. The result was a mechanical watch with a digital time display. It was launched in 2009 and has since garnered immense popularity, while the time bridge on the dial has become one of the most prominent signature elements of the brand. Thanks to its unique functional principle with mechanically powered, precisely jumping numerals, the ZEITWERK has continued to appeal to purists who could not imagine ever wearing a digital watch. Rendered in German silver, the time bridge constitutes the stage for all time indications. The apertures with the large hour and minute displays are arranged from left to right, while the small seconds occupies a subdial at six o’clock. The upgraded 2021 version of the ZEITWERK watch is powered by an all-new in-house calibre, which, with two mainspring barrels, doubles the power reserve of older ZEITWERK models from 36 to 72 hours.

Golden touch

Gold and platinum were the primary precious metals used in A. Lange & Söhne timepieces until the launch of the brand’s anniversary editions in 2010, which introduced a brand new hue: honey gold. The house’s proprietary metal, it was developed over years of metallurgical research and saw the maison’s relentless quest for substances that exhibited more scratch-resistant properties finally bearing fruit. Honey gold is an 18-carat alloy and is composed of 75 percent fine gold. It is harder than other gold alloys and scratch-resistant due to its mineral additives and a special heat treatment applied to it. Its fascinating hue, which lies between pink and white gold, is attributable to its copper and zinc constituents. To describe its unique gloss and warm hue, the maison turned to nature for an analogy. The formula was then patented and it came to be known as honey gold, as it was reminiscent of the sweet liquid produced by bees. The new ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen” is now one of a dozen A. Lange & Söhne models that feature cases made of honey gold. However, the watch not only continues the tradition that began 11 years ago but also transcends it. The honey gold case, with a diameter of 41.9 millimetres, is a first for a Lumen model. The hands of the power reserve indicator and of the subsidiary seconds as well as the Lange prong buckle are made of the same material. Combined with a dark dial and a dark brown leather strap, the hue truly stands out.

ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen”

A luminous masterpiece

When the first Lumen timepiece was unveiled in 2010, it wowed the watchmaking world for its captivating interplay with light. Traditionally, watches with luminous displays need external light sources to charge the luminous compound applied to the display elements. This allows these elements to emit a glow. However, while developing the Lumen models, the technical challenge encountered by the team was to get all the luminous elements – even those mostly hidden beneath the dial – to charge uniformly. And so the product developers at A. Lange & Söhne found an ingenious solution: a sapphire-crystal dial with a semi-transparent coating. This patented solution filters out certain spectra of visible light but lets most of the UV radiation pass through. This enables the dials of the watch to radiate the previously absorbed light energy and glow in the dark. Thanks to this attribute, the new ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen” reveals its second face at night. In the dark, only the numerals in the two display apertures glow – nothing else – making for a high-contrast, easily legible dial. All Lumen models launched since 2010 were platinum-cased timepieces. The brand-new ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen” now completes the series and marks the first time that a Lumen watch is presented in honey gold. ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen”

Crafting the future of food ——— A single visit to one of Matthew Kenney’s venues is all you need to understand why the New England native is heralded as one of the most sought-after vegan culinary geniuses in the world

Vegan beetroot hamburger

Chef Matthew Kenney

In the world of veganism, few have found success in the way that Matthew Kenney has. With his hands in multiple projects around the world – from Rhode Island to Riyadh – the celebrated chef boasts more than 40 concepts internationally. This year alone, the US-based chef added four Dubai venues to his bourgeoning worldwide empire. And a single visit is enough to understand why his restaurants are incredibly buzzworthy. Folia at the Four Seasons Resort Dubai Jumeirah Beach was his first Dubai venture, which continued to draw in the crowds in spite of its launch just before the pandemic. And now, with Expo 2020 Dubai underway, Kenney brings four more venues to the emirate, where eager epicureans can get a sense of the chef’s vegan lifestyle through his culinary creations. What inspired you to become a chef? “During my first five years in New York, I couldn’t stop exploring. Every restaurant I walked by stood out. I would stop and look at their menus to try and understand what inspired them. I was a student of restaurants. I would use any extra funds I had to dine out and learn. I grabbed at everything I could. I read cookbooks and cooked at home at midnight after work. I wanted to dig deeper into the whole culinary world, which was captivating and mysterious to me. From then on I was hooked.” You champion plant-based cuisine; was this always your culinary philosophy? What inspired you to take this approach? “As a child, I used to roam the damp woods, foraging for curled green fiddleheads, harvesting honey and canning vegetables from the family garden. As my culinary career developed, I experimented with vegetarian foods, not intentionally, but by just following my own taste and food preferences. I then started incorporating more and more vegetarian ingredients and eventually stopped eating meat and poultry. And so, by the time I considered going a hundred percent plant-based, I was ready and just did it. That was 18 or 19 years ago.”

Veg’d at Expo 2020 Dubai

Tell us about your new venues at Expo 2020 Dubai. “Each concept is quite different. Matthew Kenney Cuisine spans across three floors at Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion, which hosts a number of our plant-based restaurants. Located on the ground f loor of the pavilion is Veg’d, a fast-casual concept serving burgers and fries, with brightly coloured interiors and a relaxed vibe. Meanwhile, Xyst, on Terra’s first f loor, is a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern spot, with traditional plant-based dishes and several gluten-free options. Mudra is a rooftop venue featuring a sushi and drinks menu and it offers beautiful views across the Expo site. Finally, we have Make, which is a food truck that provides vegan and vegetarian fast food options.” Any menu highlights and must-try items you would like to share? “At Veg’d, you should definitely try either our burgers or bowls, Mudra is an elevated take on sushi and pizzas by Double Zero, so definitely give that a try, and Xyst is a modern Mediterranean venue, where I would definitely recommend our hot and cold mezzes as they are perfect for sharing with a selection of tantalising f lavours.” What are your thoughts on the dining scene in Dubai? “I was pleasantly surprised with all the different types of cuisines and international restaurants in Dubai. There is so much to choose from, however, I have yet to see anybody tap into the luxury vegan market as such, which is why we picked Dubai as our first official base in the Middle East.”

What feedback do you usually receive at your Dubai venues? “All of our concepts are being very well received, especially our fastcasual concept, Veg’d. I feel like this is a real turning point for the vegan movement in the Middle East. Even though Dubai was already a melting pot of different cultures with many vegetarian options, there seems to be even more variety now than before. And so, we are extremely honoured to introduce our variation of vegan and vegetarian options to the people of the emirate.” Tell us more about your first venture in Dubai – Folia. How did the concept come about? “Folia means ‘from the leaves’ in Latin. It is a unique plant-based menu curated in partnership with HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud’s KBW Ventures. The menu was such a success at Four Seasons’ sister properties in Beverly Hills and Bahrain, so when we were presented with the opportunity to take it to the Middle East, we jumped at it. Folia’s vegan menu features 12 plant-based dishes covering everything from starters to main courses and desserts. We see Dubai as an extremely important market for healthy cuisine and we are delighted that the residents of the emirate really enjoy both the experience and the atmosphere of the venue while savouring the meal itself.”

In the world of vegan food, few have found success in the way that chef Matthew Kenney has Botanica, One&Only Reethi Rah, Maldives

Botanica, One&Only Reethi Rah, Maldives

What’s next on the agenda for Matthew Kenney? Any plans to further expand in the region or around the globe? “We have just opened in Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait, once again in collaboration with KBW Ventures, and guests at Dai Forni and Sintoho (the hotel’s restaurants) can choose vegan dishes from our standalone, plant-based Folia menu while dining at these venues. We will also be launching a new restaurant, Adesse, at the iconic Selfridges in London as part of Project Earth, which is Selfridges’ sustainability initiative. Finally, I have just returned from the Maldives, where we opened Botanica at the One&Only Reethi Rah. And there are many more exciting opportunities in the pipeline, so keep your eyes peeled.”  matthewkenneycuisine.com

The Dubai-based founder of the plant-based restaurant chain, Wild & The Moon, shares her take on life in the emirates

I moved to Dubai in 2012 when it was still budding with infinite possibilities. My family and I settled here after a few years of living in New York. This city is where it all began; I entered the health and wellness world in 2012 with my first business, Comptoir 102, a concept-store and healthy restaurant, and then Wild & The Moon in 2015, a chain of plant-based and organic restaurants that is also based in Paris. Dubai’s passion for growth and success is really inspiring. There are so many different communities here who are open to trying new things and, now more than ever, focused on eating healthy and staying well. When I first arrived here, I was not happy with the food choices, so I decided to open a café with the healthy food that I loved. This is how Comptoir 102 was born. When it launched, we became the first and only venue in Dubai – and the UAE – to serve 100 percent real, organic, healthy food, mostly vegetarian with a lot of raw and vegan options. At that time, I thought it would work only for me, my kids and a few friends, but we were the only café offering this type of food in the region and it soon became a hotspot for the Dubai crowd. This really made me want to share everything I loved from Paris and New York, including furniture, fashion, jewellery, clean beauty products as well as healthy food and juice options. And now this is what Comptoir102 is all about. In the years that followed, I saw the interest in healthy plant-based foods growing tremendously. So I decided to take it a step further and open Wild & The Moon in 2015 in Dubai and then expanded with my first branch in Paris in February 2016. Wild & The Moon is 100 percent vegan but is also about recycling, sustainable living and giving back. We live such fast-paced lives, especially in a city like Dubai, and people cannot afford to take time for themselves, which makes it more important now than ever to slow down and focus on one’s health. When I began my journey into wellness, I wanted to show people how to connect with nature through food, so that we can get the best for ourselves and Mother Earth. Even though the city is constantly buzzing, it still offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and take time for oneself. I dream of the beaches in Dubai when I am away from the city, so I am always by the shores once I touch down. This really helps me reset, reconnect with nature and let all the work stuff go. I enjoy spending time with family, my children and friends; all I really need is nature, good food and good company. There are also some great options to disconnect in the other emirates. Areas like Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, with their mountainous landscapes, are incredibly beautiful and allow the chance to connect with centuries-old, preserved local heritage and culture. Over the weekends, I go swimming in the ocean, practise yoga or boxing, visit an exhibition, take time to cook a large dinner and gather my friends around a table under the stars. And finally, an escape in the desert always has my heart.  @emmasawko
