EDITOR’S NOTE The end of summer signals a fresh start for the UAE. As temperatures begin to drop, events season kicks off, visitors arrive in larger numbers and the city comes to life with a range of new experiences for everyone. The emirates’ action-packed calendar is no different this year with a slew of new openings, events, activities and festivals set for the season – but not without extra precautions and public health measures in place to deliver a safe experience in the midst of the pandemic. World Art Dubai kicked off art season in the city last month, paving the way for other art fairs to make a comeback, such as Dubai Design Week, which is set to take place from November 9 to 14. Turn to page 24 to learn more. Moving on to the season’s biggest sporting fixture, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix returns to the UAE capital in December. For the first time in history, this iconic race will take place behind closed doors, yet it promises a thrilling finale to the 2020 season of racing with all eyes set on Lewis Hamilton as he attempts to match retired racer Michael Schumacher’s record of seven Formula 1 wins. We have all the details on page 38. Turning our focus to luxury, German watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne steals the spotlight with a new showcase on page 42, launched as a tribute to the brand’s founder in commemoration of the maison’s 175-year anniversary. Our much-awaited Fall/Winter 2020 fashion edit from page 48 onwards will then provide plenty of inspiration for your next shopping spree. Finally, for foodies, the emirate’s dining scene has welcomed new names during the last few months and if some have missed your radar, we’ve remedied that from page 56 onwards. If the magazine leaves you feeling inspired, book your next experience with us by visiting myconcierge.com.

AL RAHA BEACH This impressive 600-metre mural runs parallel to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street in the UAE capital. Part of an intriguing collection of street paintings by a team of international artists, it pays homage to the UAE's heritage and unique Bedouin traditions.

Created by Dominican-born figurative painter and street artist, Elio Mercado, the series of paintings was completed together with his team across five weeks during which they battled soaring temperatures, high humidity and sand storms. Each painting depicts an iconic cultural scene or pastime, such as Emirati women weaving palm fronds, the serving of Arabic coffee and a young boy walking a camel.

World Art Dubai welcomed the creative community in the Middle East and beyond when it opened its doors last month at Dubai World Trade Centre. Serving as the opening act for the events season in the city, the sixth edition set an example for international art events to safely operate in the emirate in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following in its footsteps, the highly acclaimed Dubai Design Week is set to make its eagerly-awaited comeback this month from November 9 to 14. Offering a safe, al fresco setting in the emirate’s hub for all things creative – Dubai Design District (d3) – the 2020 edition of the festival features a diverse range of events, activities and experiences under the theme of redefining and reimagining the way we will live in the near and distant future. Visitors in attendance will be able to discover a series of installations, urban inventions, exhibitions and pop-ups. Also, for the first time in the event’s history, the fair introduces new online elements, allowing the global art community to access a digital art fair and attend a series of virtual talks and panel discussions featuring leaders from the creative universe. In another first, this year’s fair will see the launch of Dubai’s premier architecture festival. Curated by Juan Roldan, Associate Professor in the College of Architecture, Art & Design at the American University of Sharjah, the d3 Architecture Festival 2020 will take place in partnership with RIBA Gulf. The showcase will feature regional architectural projects under the theme ‘Identity, Context and Placemaking in the Gulf ’, celebrating landmark achievements of architecture companies in the UAE and the wider GCC region.

A L A S T I N G I M PA C T In a city brimming with programmes catering to established and emerging artists, Dubai Design Week has cemented its position as the largest event of its kind in the world. Over the last five years, the fair has served as a launchpad for creatives looking to make a name for themselves in the global art world. Now in its sixth year, the event turns its focus closer to home in response to the current reality of travel restrictions and physical distancing. This year’s fair, therefore, aims to elevate the local art scene with a special focus on Middle Eastern talent. Programmes have been designed to offer new opportunities to homegrown artists looking for their big break.

PLENTY TO EXPLORE Dubai Design Week’s 2020 edition will present a multitude of events for everyone, from the avid designer to the art lover, focussing on a variety of disciplines, including architecture, interiors, multimedia, product design and graphic design. Panel discussions taking place during the event will dive into the emerging alternative structures and solutions that designers and creatives can adapt to and learn from in order to navigate new realities. Talks led by industry experts will also explore how societies, economies and industries are reeling from the impact of the crisis, with a special focus on the realm of art and design. A regular highlight of the annual fair, workshops and masterclasses will be conducted as usual during the event, with the organisers working tirelessly behind the scenes to provide a safe learning space for everyone in attendance. Sessions will be hosted exclusively by independent designers, creators and small businesses from the UAE in varying formats, including physical sessions with small gatherings on site at d3. Chasing greatness ——

The 2020 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has taken on extra significance for Lewis Hamilton as the reigning world champion attempts to match Michael Schumacher’s record as the only driver in history to win seven Formula 1 World Championships

When it was announced in early 2007 that Abu Dhabi had won the rights to host a Grand Prix, few would have predicted that the race would take on such significance or that a Formula 1 rookie would go on to dominate the sport for the next decade. At that time, Lewis Hamilton was taking his first tentative steps in the world of motor racing. Yet, just two years after the very first Grand Prix to be held in Abu Dhabi, the British driver stormed to victory in the final race of the 2011 season, eclipsing German driver Sebastian Vettel, who scored two consecutive wins in the first two editions of the race. This was Hamilton’s second Formula 1 win, with the Briton claiming his first victory in his debut season at the Canadian Grand Prix held in 2007 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec. An astonishing effort from the then 27-year-old, his achievement on Yas Island was a sign of things to come as Hamilton went on to secure four additional wins from 2014 onwards. After winning the 2019 season in Abu Dhabi, he is now the reigning world champion and he’s all set to return to the

emirate this year to battle it out in the 11th edition of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The race has taken on extra significance for the motor racing star this year as he attempts to secure his seventh win in the history of the sport. The 2020 FIA Formula 1 World Championship marks the 70th anniversary of the first Formula 1 season held in Turin, Italy. The edition was originally supposed to start in March 2020 but was postponed until July in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 22 Grands Prix were due to run, but as some events were cancelled, only 17 races were confirmed. The Austrian Grand Prix kickstarted the season with Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas in the lead (Hamilton following closely after) and will end with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix taking place on December 13. For the first time in the history of the Abu Dhabi event, the final race of the season will take place behind closed doors due to physical distancing regulations. As per recent standings, Hamilton is in the lead with a total of 256 points, with fellow Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas in second place.

In the Portuguese Grand Prix held in October, Hamilton was crowned the most victorious driver in Formula 1 history following his 92nd career win at the Algarve International Circuit. His achievement came in a fortnight after the Eifel Grand Prix, where he drew level with Michael Schumacher’s 14-year-old record of 91 victories. But the racer aims to push the barrier even higher this year. If he successfully secures his seventh win in the 2020 finale of the renowned F1 race, he will also match the retired German race car driver’s record of seven world championships. Among other top players to watch this year, young guns Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Pérez and Lando Norris rank high. This quartet of gifted young drivers, who were all in their formative years when the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix took place, will be hoping to end the season on a high and prove that they are the future of the sport. Master stroke —— Marking the 175th anniversary of precision watchmaking in Saxony, German watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne pays tribute to its founder with the launch of the Homage to F. A. Lange collection of timepieces

Roughly two centuries ago, the German town of Glashütte was nothing more than an isolated village tucked away in an eastern corner of the country. Today, the city is universally recognised as the cradle of the precision watchmaking industry. Over the years, numerous watchmaking houses have based their manufactories in this Saxon town, further cementing its status as a focal point for the watchmaking world. But it is all thanks to the courageous step a young clockmaker took in the 1800s, forever altering the fate of Glashütte. December 7, 1845, marked a turning point in the history of the town, when Ferdinand Adolph Lange established a humble pocket watch manufactory and teaching workshop. In doing so, he laid the cornerstone for Glashütte to rise to prominence as a watchmaking hub. Starting out with 15 apprentices, F.A. Lange’s work took the watchmaking industry places, elevating the manufactory to new heights, far beyond the borders of Germany. He initiated the practice of division of labour, which was uncommon for its time, to enable the production of unique timepieces. He encouraged his employees to establish their own companies, allowing the trade to thrive. He developed modern production methods by uniting keen craftsmanship with technology, with the sole aim of putting Saxony on the map as the birthplace of the world’s finest watches. F.A. Lange is also credited with introducing the metric system to watchmaking and creating novel measuring instruments and tools. Through his life’s work, he developed countless ingenious mechanisms and watchmaking solutions, many of which he registered for patents. As a matter of course, he went on to achieve unprecedented success in the industry. Now, decades later, the maison is still a revered brand among collectors and watch aficionados. And in commemoration of the 175-year anniversary since the start of precision watchmaking in Glashütte, the watchmakers of A. Lange & Söhne have introduced a new collection. Inspired by their founder’s life’s work, the collection honours F.A. Lange’s contributions to the world of watchmaking and is, therefore, aptly named after him. Bearing the epithet “Homage to F. A. Lange”, the 1815 Thin Honeygold, the Tourbograph Perpetual Honeygold and the 1815 Rattrapante Honeygold made their debut at the Watches & Wonders event in Shanghai in September 2020.

The 1815 tribute The new anniversary edition models are additions to the maison’s highly soughtafter 1815 family of timepieces – the digits being a reference to the birth year of F.A. Lange. A fitting move, given that the timepieces belonging to the 1815 line are a nod to its founder’s pioneering watchmaking ideas, a reflection of his prodigious flair and a tribute to his timeless quest for perfection. Each of the timepieces belonging to the 1815 family bears a striking aesthetic that transports the spirit of F.A. Lange’s early pocket watches to its modern-day mechanical creations. Considered complete works of art, these watches possess an understated elegance and are of lasting value. The dial arrangement is restrained yet intricate, featuring many of the design elements found on its historic pocket watches. These include clearly legible Arabic numerals and the railway-track peripheral minute scale. A glimpse through the sapphire-crystal case back also reveals the personality of the 1815 models. Ticking away is a meticulously decorated high-precision movement, equipped with classically engineered watchmaking complications. The large three-quarter plate in untreated German silver provides extra stability for the movement and is accompanied by traditional Lange features such

as the hand-engraved balance cock, the whiplash spring for beat adjustment, the traditional screw balance and gold chatons fixed with thermally blued screws. Embodying all these signature characteristics of the 1815 line, each of the newly-introduced timepieces features unique movement decorations and special dials dedicated to the pioneer himself. The watches represent a unique connection between traditional watchmaking elements and innovative craftsmanship, thus bridging the brand’s historic origins with its present. The unifying element of the three new limited edition models is the innovative case material, honey gold, a patented alloy which nods to the manufactory’s eternal quest for new metallurgical discoveries using gold. Golden touch Until the dawn of the last decade, A. Lange & Söhne rendered their collections solely in gold and platinum. But this was soon set to change, with the maison’s relentless search for substances that exhibited more scratch-resistant properties finally bearing fruit. Metallurgical research with gold has always been popular in Saxony and experiments using the metal are often associated with the long-standing tradition of alchemy. But the German manufacture has maintained a strictly scientific approach to its involvement with the metal. Their years of research yielded an alloy with a distinct colour that hovered between yellow and pink gold. The metal proved to be more scratch resistant than gold or platinum and was harder than commonly used gold alloys. To describe its unique gloss and warm hue, the maison turned to nature for an analogy. The formula was then patented and it came to be known as honey gold, as it was reminiscent of the sweet liquid produced by bees. For the wearer, an A. Lange & Söhne timepiece rendered in honey gold is a symbol of pride. Promising absolute elegance and incredible damage resistance, it is the ideal choice for collectors. Behind the scenes, however, the material poses immense challenges during the manufacturing process. From a purely chemical point of view, honey gold is an 18-carat alloy composed of 75 percent fine gold. Its extraordinary hardness is a result of exposing the alloy to an array of thermic treatments. But this makes it extremely difficult to shape and finish. The material is, therefore, reserved for the maison’s most exclusive timepieces. Since 2010, A. Lange & Söhne has introduced 11 limitededition timepieces with the honey-coloured, patented material, including the trio of watches introduced in the newly launched Homage to F. A. Lange collection.

Technical excellence While each of the timepieces from the new collection boasts unprecedented technical expertise, two of the watches – the Tourbograph Perpetual Honeygold and the 1815 Rattrapante Honeygold – champion the maison’s love for chronographs featuring highly complex developments. Among his endless inventory of achievements, F.A. Lange is also the man behind the brand’s first chronograph, which he created in 1868. It had a single pusher that allowed the chronograph hand to be started, stopped and reset to zero, setting a new benchmark in the industry. Any new calibre proceeding this function would, therefore, have to not only live up to its innovative excellence but also surpass it.

So, in 1994, following the company’s first successful presentation of new timepieces, after its 20th-century revival by F.A. Lange’s grandson, Walter Lange, the maison made it a top priority to develop its proprietary chronograph calibre. Five years later, the Datograph made a successful debut, gradually becoming A. Lange & Söhne’s symbol of its quest for innovation. Today, its movement is considered by industry experts and connoisseurs to be one of the most beautiful chronograph calibres. Subsequent to its success, the house achieved new heights in chronograph design, inspired by the original chronograph, which is honoured even today with the new Homage to F. A. Lange collection. To browse the collection, visit the A. Lange & Söhne boutiques in The Dubai Mall 04 3253923 or Mall of the Emirates 04 5471860 or alange-soehne.com

A refined two-hand dress watch, the 1815 Thin Honeygold unites the house’s two significant features, perfection and clarity, characterised by clean lines and an overall classic feel. Taking design cues from the brand’s early pocket watches, the intricately handmade white enamel dial features darkgrey printed Arabic numerals and a railwaytrack minute scale. Further bolstering its sleek appearance, it is 38 millimetres in diameter with a thin dial merely 6.3 millimetres high. The L093.1 manufacture calibre beats inside the watch with a power reserve of 72 hours. The 2.9-millimetre-high manually wound movement proves that compact dimensions and performance are not mutually exclusive. The freely oscillating balance spring works in combination with a classic screw balance to ensure optimised rate accuracy. The edition is limited to just 175 watches.

The new watches are rendered in honey gold, the patented material reserved for the maison’s most exclusive timepieces 1815 Thin Honeygold

Underscoring its commitment to enhancing its watchmaking flair, the brand has reintroduced the Tourbograph Perpetual Honeygold, limited to 50 pieces. First released in 2017, the watch gets an updated look with a honey gold case and honey gold elements on the black rhodium dial. A technological masterpiece, the dial brings together a quintet of complications, including a fusée-and-chain transmission, a tourbillon, a perpetual calendar, an exclusive movement finissage and the most interesting of all – the rattrapante chronograph. Controlled by two column wheels, the sweep hand runs in tandem with the chronograph hand. The entire process is showcased through the exhibition case back. Housing all of those complications requires a substantial size and height, yet it manages to smoothly fit it all into a case that is 43 millimetres wide and 16.6 millimetres high.

1815 R AT T R A PA N T E H O N E YG O L D

Limited to just 100 watches, the 1815 Rattrapante Honeygold puts the focus on the eponymous complication. The maison’s sixth split-seconds chronograph, it stands out with another premiere: for the first time, the complication is in the spotlight. The superposed chronograph and rattrapante sweep-seconds hands make it possible to ascertain any number of lap times within the course of a minute during a running time measurement. Both hands start together when the pusher at two o’clock is actuated. The rattrapante sweepseconds hand can be stopped independently of the chronograph sweep-seconds hand and then synchronised with it. This function is controlled with the pusher at 10 o’clock. Housing this remarkable complication is the 41.2-millimetre case, rendered in honey gold and featuring a black dial. The edition is limited to just 100 pieces.

Orlebar Brown 2020 collection

Orlebar Brown 2020 collection

Redefining luxury —— Admired for its more tailored approach to conventional swimwear, London-based menswear brand Orlebar Brown is the perfect fit for the UAE’s luxe seaside lifestyle. Founder Adam Brown tells us how his concept revolutionised the fashion world

In a decade where baggy shorts were all the rage, Orlebar Brown founder, Adam Brown, championed the concept of taking tailored shorts into uncharted waters, quite literally. The idea came to Brown when he was holidaying in Rajasthan in 2005. After spending the morning by the pool, he decided to go to lunch at the hotel’s restaurant but was turned away at the door and asked to return only after changing out of his swim shorts. And that’s where the idea of “tailored shorts you can swim in” was born. Although he hadn’t worked a single day in fashion or retail, Brown was determined to launch his start-up. After getting the basics in place by enrolling in business courses and researching fabrics, he launched Orlebar Brown in 2007 as a digital retail platform. With a spare room in his home serving as the brand’s premier headquarters, he successfully completed his first order of 1,000 pairs of shorts. And it wasn’t too long before his swim shorts caught the world’s attention for its unique tailoring found mostly in a pair of suit trousers. The rest, as they say, is history. After 13 years in business, how has the brand evolved? “We launched in 2007 as a tailored swim shorts brand. Today, the story remains the same, with sunshine, travel, happiness and good times as the key theme. Essentially, we are a lifestyle brand but our hero product has evolved into many different categories and collections. We have been climbing the ladder over the last decade and our range has tremendously grown.” Orlebar Brown 2020 collection

What challenges did you face when you established the brand? “Before Orlebar Brown came along, I had never started a business or worked in fashion. Knowing very little about these things was both a plus and a minus. Weirdly, naivety is a good thing because you just get on with it and try your best. For example, I spent a lot of time building the website, learning how to drive traffic and encouraging people to check out, which all took a lot of practice. Like any start-up business, we experienced the usual challenges, but if you stick with your values, eventually things fall into place.” And what would you say determined the brand’s success? “Orlebar Brown works because it has a unique proposition. Character matters. Just promoting Orlebar Brown as a collection of clothes was never going to work. It was important to highlight the brand as one with values and purpose. We achieved this by listening to feedback from our customers, striving for quality and realising the need to be surrounded by a great team. All these factors have contributed to why we are still here.”

Orlebar Brown 2020 collection

What have been your biggest milestones on this journey? “Starting with a blank sheet of paper and seeing it evolve and come to life with its own DNA and personality has been the best part. I also love it when people share their #OBsAroundTheWorld on social media. It’s great that our brand has become such a special part of people’s memories. It’s not only a product that people buy but also a product that they emotionally engage with.”

“Orlebar Brown works because it has a unique proposition” Adam Brown

Tell us more about the #SnapShorts campaign and the inspiration behind it. “As soon as we put pictures by American photographer Slim Aarons on our line of Bulldog Classic shorts, it was clear that we were onto a winner. The images were meant to tell a story. Within no time since its launch, we started getting requests from customers asking for their own images to be featured on the shorts. #SnapShorts was our answer. The campaign allowed customers to turn their favourite photograph, drawing or graphic into a personalised pair of swim shorts, transforming moments and memories into madeto-order shorts. It became a personal way for everyone to tell their own story with a truly unique product.” You have grown to three stores in Dubai, are you looking to expand further? “We are very happy with how the stores have performed in Dubai. We currently have a few scenic Dubai snapshots printed on our swim shorts, featuring the iconic JBR, Dubai Marina skyline, the gorgeous palm trees and pool of Mandarin Oriental Jumeira Dubai, and a print of the stunning resort grounds of One & Only Royal Mirage. Still, there is a lot more we are hoping to do here. We have just launched a Dubai version of our website and are excited about that. Dubai is synonymous with holidays and there are so many great hotels and resorts we could be working with, even in Abu Dhabi.” Discover the brand at The Dubai Mall 04 3305005

California cool ——— Bringing the glamour of the west coast and Hollywood to the city, Paramount Hotel Dubai’s selection of dining venues is well placed to take the emirate’s culinary scene by storm

At Paramount Hotel Dubai, everything is inspired by the art and craft of cinema. From Hollywood-themed suites to luxurious experiences that draw from the glitz and glamour of the film industry, the property has brought a whole new experience in hospitality to the emirate. The hotel’s dining venues are no exception with tempting options sure to impress avid foodies. At the helm in the kitchens is Executive Chef Ezequiel Cardozo, who, in keeping with the cinematic theme, goes by the title Executive Producer – Culinary. We recently had the chance to catch up with the talented chef, who took us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the hotel’s dining outlets. Read on to discover what to expect when you dine at Paramount Hotel Dubai. Tell us about your role at Paramount Hotel Dubai. “When I joined the hotel over a year ago, we weren’t open yet. Back then, I was tasked with designing and curating menus for all our dining outlets. My role also involved keeping an eye on the market in Dubai, designing the kitchens for maximum efficiency and assisting with budgeting. Now that we’ve launched, my primary task is to continue refining the cuisine we serve and develop an incredibly diverse team. We consider ourselves producers, cooking for the stars who are our guests.”

our guests would have ever tried before. We serve a market-style selection of seafood, woodfired steaks, raw treats and salads. Each of the dishes highlights the simplicity of the ingredients, allowing their true flavour profiles and textures to shine through. Diners at Pacific Groove are in for an aesthetically staged journey, an experience that they can ‘see, smell and savour’. They are invited to sit back and watch the chefs prepare sizzling woodfired steaks and grill fresh seafood, all while they take in an incredible dining experience that is hard to come by elsewhere in the city.” Any must-try items on the menu at Pacific Grove? “The array of ceviches, crudos and handcrafted Californian groovy rolls are among the most recommended items. Make sure to try the carabineros ceviche with dragon fruit, red chilli, cilantro and yuzu; wagyu tataki crudo and the king crab cakes.”

How would you describe the overall dining experience? “The hotel was born to become an icon on Dubai’s hospitality scene. The concept is inspired by the rich history of Paramount Pictures with Hollywoodthemed rooms and Californian cuisine presented with creative flair. We have everything to delight our guests, including a café inspired by the glistening west coast, a mischievous chocolate lab, a hidden den serving up inventive drinks, poolside food trucks and an all-day international dining restaurant. Our shared philosophy is that although excellent food is a great start, a restaurant requires several other elements to fall into place in order to make it a meal to remember. Every detail – from the staff to the ambience – is taken into consideration to give our diners a memorable experience.”

“Diners at Pacific Groove are in for an aesthetically staged experience that they can see, smell and savour” Walk us through the process of curating menus. “It all begins with fully understanding the idea behind each outlet and its location. Staying true to an authentic Californian experience, which encompasses influences from the Pacific Islands and Mexico, has been the guiding philosophy. Personally, I have always been a fan of all things Baja and Californian and I was able to use tried-and-tested techniques while creating our dishes, such as playing with raw ingredients and adding flavour without changing textures.” What can diners expect at Pacific Groove Pacific Groove Restaurant & Lounge, the hotel’s signature venue? “Pacific Groove captures the essence of Californian cuisine. The menu is fresh, light and healthy, and it features Mexican, American and Asian signatures that make for a wholesome and inventive meal. The flavours are unlike anything

What inspired your passion for cooking? “My grandmother was a chef, she was always cooking up a feast. Even the bread was homemade. I started helping her when I was very young and since then, have always wanted to be a chef. I started working as a commis chef at a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Spain. But I wanted to learn more and explore different culinary techniques. So I focused on travelling the world to learn more about food.” How have your past experiences in the field prepared you for this role? “I have lived and worked in Spain, China, Seychelles, Antigua and Barbuda, Mexico and the USA. My experience in Mexico cultivated my passion for using raw ingredients and inf luenced a lot of my cooking, which I now use extensively at the hotel. Through my travels, I learnt a lot of different traditional techniques used in these countries and have cooked several recipes with their seasonal produce. This knowledge has proved extremely beneficial in catering to the multicultural audiences we host at the hotel.” For bookings or more information  04 2466777 or

/ Folia

Derived from the Latin phrase which means ‘from the leaves’, Folia first opened its doors in January at Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach. Offering delectable vegan delights, the menu was designed to cater to the growing ‘veganuary’ trend that takes over the health community at the start of the year to balance all the culinary decadence of the holiday season. Its opening made waves and it became an instant hit with Dubai’s vegan crowd, but temporarily closures in the wake of the pandemic set it off course. Folia has now returned to the dining scene with a conceptual menu featuring just 12 items, curated by celebrated chef Matthew Kenney. Nestled in its own secluded garden oasis at the resort, its scenic setting lends the perfect ambience for its plant-based dishes. Sample the wild mushroom sandwich, complete with caramelised onion and truffle aioli; or try the raw pizza margherita, which, with cashew ricotta and pesto, proves that healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring. 04 2707777

I feel privileged to call this country home, even in the midst of a pandemic. For expatriates in the country, leaving your home to move abroad is a bold step, particularly as you leave behind family, friends and your comfort zone. However, the nation is built on the foundation of inclusiveness and safety, which means it offers opportunities to everyone from anywhere in the world. My inspiration as an entrepreneur stems from the country’s values, its remarkable projects and ambitious initiatives. As the founder of Concerto, my professional life revolves around changing the sustainability narrative, with a focus on enhancing business strategies for the companies I work with. While this keeps me engaged 24/7, I make the most of my leisure time by going out to try new cuisines with my husband or getting lost in the plot of a movie. I am also very passionate about performance arts and my favourite places to experience this are Dubai Opera and Alserkal Avenue. Both hubs are currently offering blended experiences, at the venues and online. I also really enjoy sunbathing on Dubai’s scenic beaches while reading a good book. The benefit of living in this part of the world is that (with the exception of a few weeks in winter when it gets really nippy) the UAE has year-round sunshine, which makes every weekend feel like a short holiday. One of my favourite things to do over the weekend is visiting Yas Island for its diverse entertainment offering. For a true sense of escape, I prefer booking a staycation at a hotel nestled in the desert. This helps me disconnect from my hyperactive lifestyle. When it comes to dining, it is quite difficult to pick a favourite restaurant as Dubai offers such a broad range of choices from all corners of the world, in an array of amazing settings, from beach locations to breathtaking city views. But two of my top choices would be DIFC’s Zuma for the delightful food and buzzing atmosphere, and Wild & The Moon in Alserkal Avenue for the artsy ambience and healthy options. For those looking to experience the city in unique ways, I always suggest taking a trip with Dubai Ferry. For the adventurous ones that crave adrenaline, the city is equally beautiful from the skies, and best experienced during the 4,000-metre freefall at Skydive Dubai. A spot not to miss is definitely Burj Khalifa’s observation decks, where the entire city unfolds before your eyes. Behind the glitz and the glamour, there are so many ways in which the culture can be experienced, be it a Bedouin-style desert safari, a spree through the souks in Old Dubai or a visit to Abu Dhabi’s oldest fortress – Qasr Al Hosn. With over 200 nationalities living in the UAE, it is important to be respectful towards other cultures, no matter where you go. But it is also this multicultural set-up that inspires the extensive variety of experiences available to us. So for those who visit and for those who live here, my advice would be to embrace the country as we would do with our home countries, which means learning more about its history, traditions and drastic transformation.
