back in time ——— With a focus on innovation, Officine Panerai is paying a fitting tribute to its centuries-old heritage

Representing the finest in Italian craftsmanship and Swiss precision, the story of Officine Panerai is often celebrated as a unique chapter in haute horology. Renowned for introducing the world’s first glowing dive watches, originally produced for the Royal Italian Navy in the early 19th century, today each Panerai timepiece recalls its strong maritime heritage.

“Our history has its beginnings in Florence where Giovanni Panerai, a businessperson, craftsman and innovator, opened the city’s first watchmaker’s shop in 1860. Our history links every single detail of a watch to the purpose for which it was designed and made, for example, when Panerai watches were supplied to the commandos of the Italian Navy. It is a history that has always looked to the future, through the ongoing search for technical excellence that distinguishes every new collection,” explains Milvin George, Managing Director - Middle East and India for Officine Panerai.

The early years of Panerai shaped its momentous journey. In 1936, the instruments developed for the Royal Italian Navy took on an even more strategic role to be used for the prototype of the Radiomir watch.

Created for the underwater exploits of the commandos of the First Submarine Group, many of its features still distinguish it today: a large steel cushion-shaped case (47mm), luminous numerals and markers delivering an unprecedented level of visibility underwater, wire

loop strap attachments welded to the case, a hand-wound mechanical movement, and a wide water-resistant strap, long enough to be fastened over the diving suit.

In 1938, the prototype of the Radiomir went into production, charting a confident course for Panerai. The design of the Radiomir gradually transformed to better meet the Navy’s requirements, which then led to the brand’s Radiomir 1940 collection. Existing designs of the Radiomir 1940 cases continue to be inspired by historic examples created for the Italian Navy.

Officine Panerai – part of the Richemont Group since 1997 – re-interprets its passion year by year. For more than 150 years, the luxury watchmaker’s focus has been the creation of high precision instruments for measuring time, with a strong, distinctive aesthetic and functional identity. “Panerai’s novelties are notable for their timeless design; whether in Radiomir or Luminor cases, they present a series of technological innovations that are evidence of the ability of the Florentine brand to draw inspiration from its own past as it writes the future of high quality watchmaking,” George explains.

Every Panerai watch from the brand’s collections, which include Radiomir, Radiomir 1940, Luminor, Luminor 1950 and Luminor Due, is borne of centuries of unique heritage and careful attention to detail, as George reaffirms: “The essence of the brand and one

The Luminor Submersible 1950 BMG-TECH 3 Days Automatic 47mm, water-resistant to 300 metres, is the first mechanical watch with a case made of metallic glass (Bulk Metallic Glass), which delivers extra strength and durability. Another new jewel in Panerai’s crown is the Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days - 49mm. A technical marvel, the watch features no oils or liquid lubricants of any kind in

its movement, and boasts a 50-year guarantee. The special edition also stands out for its deep black dial and contemporary finish.

Leading the way with masterful innovations, and complemented by the strength of an enviable heritage, Panerai remains resolute about the future of the industry.

As George explains: “We keep an open eye on trends; however, we do not follow them as we do not want to lose our strong brand identity. Despite the technological revolution and the rise in the popularity of smartwatches, we predict and believe that traditional analogues will still maintain their relevance through their craftsmanship and art of watchmaking, which sets them apart.

“Smartwatches are very trendy and handy but they serve an entirely different clientele. Hence, in terms of technology and trends, we are constantly solidifying our watch collection, introducing new movements and putting forth our ‘Laboratorio Di Idee’ expertise, while maintaining the exclusivity of the brand.”

SIGNATURE SCENTS ——— Concierge discovers a secret perfume house nestled in the heart of Jumeirah

The heady scent of woody bukhoor lingers in the garden as we sit down to talk about the art of perfumery with Villa 515 founder Dhaher Bin Dhaher. It’s a topic that’s quite close to his heart.

“I grew up in a home where bukhoor is a ritual that would be done three or four times a day. Now I make my own and it’s completely different from what you would get in the market,” he says with a smile. He’s right, of course, but the bukhoors are just one of the many highlights at Villa 515, a boutique that specialises in niche perfumes and artisanal labels, as well as crafting bespoke fragrances.

Dhaher Bin Dhaher is an avid perfumer himself and the talent behind Tola, an Emirati perfume line that makes use of the highest quality fragrance oils.

“It’s a brand that came from a concept – I wanted to capture memories in a bottle. When we were in London a few years ago, my mother and sister were discussing perfumes. I saw the joy on their faces when they talked about fragrances, and I told them I would create a brand for them. That’s where it all started. I then began touring and learning more about the industry, especially in Europe where all the rare fragrances are available,” says Dhaher.

Rooted in tradition, Tola became one of the first niche Emirati brands to go international with exhibitions in New York and Florence. Today it retails in countries across the globe including Germany, France, Hungary, Italy, the United Kingdom,

Romania and Switzerland. Its unique name refers to the tola unit of measurement – equivalent to 11.7 grammes – that originated in India and is still used in the Arab world to measure precious metals and oil. At Villa 515, visitors can discover all three Tola collections and Dhaher tells us that the Misk Begum from the Voyage collection remains an international bestseller with its beautifully musky and floral scent.

Soon after launching Tola, Dhaher Bin Dhaher realised there was a gap in the UAE market for a more intimate, boutique destination dedicated to niche perfumery. He partnered with creative perfume director Alessandro Gualtieri – famed for his in-demand Nasomatto perfumes – and Dutch fashion designer Lilian Driessen for the interiors and concept of Villa 515, which officially opened its doors to the public in 2014. Today, it’s gaining a reputation as a haven for discovering avantgarde fragrances and crafting bespoke scents.

“We always liked the relationship to be more intimate and Villa 515 started as a place where we could have our products, but we also introduced a lab for customised fragrances. Not every person knows what kind of fragrance suits them so we try to figure out what they like with different scents,” explains Dhaher. Delving into some of the thinking behind perfumery, he reveals that our body scents are similar to fingerprints; no two people have the same scent. It’s the reason why different perfumes don’t smell the same on different people, and why there is a growing demand for bespoke fragrances that are made to order.

Visitors can book an appointment to have a signature scent crafted at Villa 515’s perfume laboratory – affectionately known as L’Officina Dei Nasi (the workshop of the noses) based on the availability of perfumers who visit often from Europe.

Designed with the Arabian hammam as inspiration, the laboratory features a selection of oils, essences and concentrates from Europe and the Middle East.

“A fragrance can reflect your character and your personality. We like to talk to the candidate right at the start to see how passionate they are about fragrances and why they want a customised scent. We don’t create a fragrance unless we know that the person is going to appreciate it, as it involves a lot of sampling and testing on different notes. Our pricing is consistent with Europe and varies depending on each creation. But then it’s your own recipe and can be made to order later at a regular rate.

“We’ve been innovative in our approach and even in our selection of brands. The term ‘niche’ isn’t only about hard to find products but the way you communicate the products. It’s about representing the right elements and explaining the ingredients,” explains Dhaher. Several brands such as Antonio Alessandria, Une Nuit A Bali, Ann Gerard Parfums, Orto Parisi, Baruti and Vero Profumo are available in the UAE exclusively through Villa 515.

They are also official partners of Nasomatto, Orto Parisi and Maria L in the Middle East.

The Villa 515 boutique features a wonderful courtyard that doubles as an event space for exclusive launches, while right opposite the perfume laboratory is an eclectic range of fashion brands, including a few homegrown labels. There are plans in place to open a café in the future too.

“Villa 515 is a concept that we would like to go international with and replicate in different cities,” says Dhaher. The company has recently opened an outlet in the Galleria Mall in Abu Dhabi.

“History says perfumery started in the Middle East and as a result, a lot of Arabs today are perfumers themselves because they blend different fragrances and notes to create the right smells. We consume a lot of fragrances here but we need to improve appreciation for original fragrances and build awareness about the differences between commercial and niche perfumes,” says Dhaher. He adds: “For me, nowadays, perfume is a necessity in life. I think you cannot live without food, a home or a fragrance.”

There’s an inextricable link between Islam and writing. This connection stems from the fact that calligraphy was the primary means of preserving the Qur’an. Found within mosques, books, tombs, architecture and paintings, Arabic calligraphy has left a visual stamp in every conceivable corner of the Islamic world.

Masterfully inscribed on coins, paintings, mosque interiors and ancient architecture, Arabic calligraphy is a treasured creative form that bridges the gap between religion and the art of writing.

Requiring decades of practice to truly master, there’s a unique sense of serenity attributed to this traditional art as calligraphers thoughtfully contemplate each inky stroke. “For me it is like a form of meditation and inner exploration. It is also a language that represents many concepts in an abstract and verbal way,” explains artist Majid Alyousef.

It was an early passion that spurred on his fascination with calligraphy. “I started drawing and painting when I was eight years old, although over the years it was my interest in calligraphy that really flourished. I went on to gain a BA degree in Fine Arts and an MA degree in Interactive Design and during my career I’ve worked with several internationally recognised branding and advertising agencies.”

Now working out of his studio in Dubai, Alyousef says a typical day begins with an assessment of ongoing projects and requests. “Usually it starts with a quick review of the work currently under construction, be it paintings or sketches. It’s good to take notes with a fresh eye early in the day. Then I do some warm up lettering and calligraphy exercises before moving on to the tasks for that day.”

Although a traditionalist in some respects, in many others Alyousef is keen to keep his style innovative. “For the classical artworks, though I use contemporary tools, I usually follow the

traditions of the old masters, keeping the techniques similar. Then for modern styles I do more intuitive and improvised sketches in the first stages – although the final art piece is far from improvised and would be more of a studied result.”

From calligraphy paintings to typography consultancy and type-face design, the Saudi artist offers a variety of interesting services. Among them includes the ‘Arabisation’ of existing foreign brands. Alyousef explains that designing an Arabic logotype in this way involves “a visual analysis of the typographic style used in the original brand mark, followed by a design in Arabic that visually matches the logo”.

While he enjoys experimenting with contemporary styles, for those who are just starting to explore the art he suggests starting with more classical types. “Most calligraphers, especially beginners, like modern styles that look good but are not extremely difficult to master.Young artists tend to learn these styles to make pieces in a short time with a lot of creative flexibility. Classical calligraphy is difficult, but to be really good in any modern style, you have to start with the classics to understand the basic rules of aesthetics and then develop your own style.” He also stresses that it’s important to keep evolving as an artist. “I think the artist should also be an intellectual person, so besides continuously practicing, reading and learning the theory and philosophy of art is important. There is always something new to learn and discover, and that should be the attitude of an artist.”

The word ‘calligraphy’ originates from the Greek meaning ‘beautiful writing’. Centuries of expertise have been handed down through generations to preserve the ancient art of calligraphy.

“GEOMETRY IS A VERY CRITICAL PART OF COMPOSITION AND THE AT TR ACTIVENESS OF GEOMETRICAL SHAPES IS DIRECTLY REL ATED TO THE WAY THE BR AIN PERCEIVES THEM” Approaching the science behind the art, Alyousef explains that, for him, essentially it comes down to three key elements – geometry, a sense of vision and neuro-aesthetics.

“Geometry is a very critical part of composition and the attractiveness of geometrical shapes is directly related to the way the brain perceives them. The visual process in the brain comes from two main components; the first one defines lines and contours and the other is concerned with colour and tonality. Neuro-aesthetics, on the other hand, is the study of aesthetics from a scientific perspective. I use some of these principles in order to create compositions using paints. When looking at a painting, our eyes only take in small segments of it and then the brain stitches them together to form the whole experience. In reality we can’t recognise more than five centimetres of any object we look at any given moment.

But, as the eye scans the canvas, capturing its many segments, it allows us to put the image together and understand the subject in that particular painting. In my artwork I try to shuffle the stages of that process and rearrange multiple segments in more intricate forms. I also play with the spacing and positioning of objects – the result is very interesting.”

Traditionally, Islamic calligraphy is drawn using a carved reed pen and there are several styles within the genre, each with distinct shapes and characteristics. Mastering this kind of calligraphy means mastering the Arabic alphabet, which consists of a script of 28 letters

distinguished by a dot or dots placed above or below the letter.

Discussing the similarities, as well as the differences, between traditional Arabic calligraphy and other mainstream forms, Alyousef tells us: “The main similarity is the skill. Arabic, Latin and Chinese calligraphy all require a lot of patience and practice. Yet the differences can clearly be seen in the way you acquire that skill. Arabic calligraphy needs a lot of control when moving the slanted cut pen on the paper and a lot of retouching and refining is done to complete an art piece. Latin requires a steady hand, but some areas do need quick and sharp moves to achieve the desired form, and usually they use broad, straight-cut pens. In Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, the artist uses a delicate brush held almost perpendicularly to create strokes with quick sharp movements.

“Looking at my paintings, the most recognisable characteristic is the strong motion of gestures that is suggested by lines. I focus on defining the contour of letters and showing their unique forms with lines, and this works in harmony with the other important component, which is colour, as well as the coloured spaces.”

Constantly evolving, while calligraphy has been adopted and embraced in many modern day aspects, from logo creation to graffiti-style paintings, its unbreakable link back to religion and ancient expression remains a significant part of its enduring appeal.

That’s what makes FIVE Palm Jumeirah Dubai so special; we are seeing new guests every day and it is fantastic to be able to create memorable meetings and experiences for them all, and also have that as my job,” explains Nilsson, who is full of praise about the property, adding that it stands out “ in terms of design, service and gastronomy”.

At BLVD On One visitors can savour Peruvian-style seafood ceviche with crispy sumac pita, which sits alongside classic pan-seared cod with cauliflower cream and a hearty BBQ garlic grilled Portobello burger. There’s more to discover at Quattro Passi restaurant, which incorporates traditional Italian cooking techniques that have been passed down through generations, with founder and chef Antonio Mellino at the helm. The homemade pastries and fresh blends at The Delisserie are also a treat, while chic wine bar Elevate, located on the 13th floor, always impresses with its refreshing drinks selection and striking views of the ocean and Dubai Marina.

There’s so much to choose from that even Nilsson admits it’s difficult to pick his favourites: “I am very happy with all the dishes at the hotel. I have to keep going forward with new dishes all the time, so there is no time to feel attached to any one meal.”

“We are in the very beginning of operations and we are constantly trying new things and hunting for great produce and I am finding new options every day. I really hope that we can find more local produce, but we use international produce as the base,” says Nilsson.

With an illustrious career that includes multiple accolades, such as serving Noble Prize winners and being the go-to chef for the Swedish Royal Family, Nilsson brings a wealth of experience to Dubai’s culinary scene.

“I was, at a very early age, introduced to great food through family gatherings. Food has always been a big deal to me,” Nilsson says. “I have always been a very open minded person with no fear for new things or challenges, so it has been a steady way up from the beginning. My career has been full of highlights with a lot of interesting and fun things, like winning Sweden’s Chef of the Year in 1998 as well as the Nordic Chef of the Year 2000, and working with fantastic people.”

Always curious and keen to experiment, Nilsson is already learning more about Arabic cuisine and fusion flavours from his new base at FIVE Palm Jumeirah Dubai.

He explains: “It’s been a real eye opener for me. I was not aware of the depth of quality and variety in Dubai, I call it the ‘New York of the Middle East’. It should truly be known as a gastronomy destination and I understand why the Michelin Guide is looking into this city. It has a bright future.

“There is huge potential in merging different techniques, cultures and flavours. That’s what makes food interesting and moves gastronomy forward.

a vintage Land Rover before enjoying cultural entertainment and authentic Emirati cuisine in a Bedouin-themed camp.

While a visit to Burj Khalifa never disappoints with spectacular views of the city from high above, it’s also worth taking the time to explore newer attractions such as the indoor theme park IMG Worlds of Adventure. If you’re looking for more thrills and spills, look no further than Dubai Parks and Resorts. The indoor rainforest at The Green Planet in City Walk is also proving very popular with residents and visitors alike, thanks to its exotic plants and animals, including its resident sloths, while Dubai Water Canal is another unique destination with beautiful bridges and walkways.

Dubai is the best place to shop but to save time, it helps for visitors to know exactly what they are hoping to buy. For luxury shopping, The Dubai Mall, Wafi and Mall of the Emirates are the best options, while a range of souvenirs can be found at Souk Madinat Jumeirah.

The historic side of the city presents a wonderful opportunity for souvenirs so spend the day bargaining at the souks or shop for stunning fabrics at Meena Bazaar in Bur Dubai. The Gold Souk is also a great place to go shopping for gold jewellery in intricate designs, and you can haggle to get the best prices on a bespoke, fully customised piece.

After a long day out exploring, enjoy dinner at Bussola, an Italian restaurant with a romantic beachside setting offering beautiful views of the city skyline in the distance. Al Mahara by Nathan Outlaw, located in the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, is also an iconic restaurant that stands out for its exceptional cuisine and service.
