This traditional wooden sailing boat, whose name derives from the Persian word ‘dawh’ meaning sailing vessel, was originally used for transportation, pearl diving and trading. Today these majestic vessels can be seen under full sail on the horizon each winter, racing over the waves of the Arabian Gulf. The boats are crewed mainly by teams of young UAE nationals under stiff competition with big prize money at stake. Sailors use traditional skills in these races as they hoist the boom carrying the sail by hand, using block and tackle.

Name: Muna Al Shamsi Nationality: Emirati Occupation: Owner of couture boutique, Elegance Dubai is such an exciting and dynamic destination. One of the things I love most about the city is discovering new hotels. My current favorites are the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and the One&Only The Palm, both on The Palm Jumeirah. I enjoy their atmosphere, good food and luxurious spas. Before I launched my boutique, I worked for Madinat Jumeirah, which I enjoyed a great deal. I would say this is where my passion for new hotels comes from. I also like going to the beach with friends. The beach is the best place to relax and most importantly get a tan. I do most of my shopping at The Dubai Mall because it has all the stores I need. For day wear I go to Zara because they always have new styles in store, as well as Top Shop and Massimo Dutti. My favorite high-end brands are Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gina and Christian Louboutin. I like Louis Vuitton and Chanel bags because they go with everything. I try to keep my style simple, but fashionable. For abayas (ladies’ traditional dress), I go to Slouchy’Z and DAS as they are fashionable and unique. I enjoy dining at Italian restaurant Vapiano and at More Café. Both outlets have branches across the city including The Dubai Mall. I tend to eat lunch out most days as I spend such long hours at work. During the weekend, I like dining at Joe’s Café and at Souk Al Bahar, next to The Dubai Mall. The restaurants in Souk Al Bahar offer beautiful views over The Dubai Fountain and the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Most importantly, they also serve good food. I only eat Emirati food at home with my family. The best Emirati food is always home made.

Sky-high Dubai Brimming with world-renowned, iconic landmarks, Dubai is a feast for the eyes. One of the best ways to see these sights is on an aerial tour taking in key attractions such as the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, Dubai Creek and the sprawling Arabian Desert. The Palm Jumeirah, another popular attraction, is best viewed from above with its trunk and 17 fronds most easily visible. Look out for the much-vaunted Atlantis, The Palm located in the centre of The Palm’s sweeping crescent. With a distinctive Arabic arch separating its wings, the property is instantly recognisable. Often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, The Palm Jumeirah measures 5km by 5km and covers an area bigger than 800 football pitches. focused shopaholic itching to snap up the year's best bargains Whether it’s high street or high end, the world’s biggest brands will all be participating in this year’s Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS), the region’s largest summer shopping and entertainment event, which started last month and is set to run until July 31st. With mega raffles worth millions of dirhams and fun children’s entertainment, DSS, now in its 14th year, is a family affair designed to appeal to young and old, visitors and residents alike. But the exclusive fashion shows, dancers, acrobats, clowns, even the chance to win expensive cars, cannot overshadow the main attraction of DSS: the simply staggering in-store discounts. From Aldo to Zara and Armani to Zadig & Voltaire, you name it there are jaw-dropping promotions across all spring/summer 2011 collections. And what better time to bag a bargain than now?

Team a colour-popping pair of shoes with an existing dress for a fun, funky outfit. “Shorts are fashionable too whether they’re short shorts or mid-length shorts. Pair them with a top, high heels and a black blazer, a key trend this summer that will continue into the winter. Stella McCartney has a stunning tuxedo-style jacket. Either roll up the sleeves or opt for a blazer with three-quarter-length sleeves,” she says.

COLOURED KALEIDOSCOPE Update your wardrobe with block colours, which have featured heavily in spring/summer collections. Vibrant blues, oranges, reds and greens have brightened window displays and brought magazine pages to life, and paired with other block colours make a bold fashion statement. “Strong, bright colours are a must this summer, particularly red, hot pink, green, yellow and electric blue. But the colour that really jumps out ahead of the line is orange and this is prominent throughout the DSS sales,” explains Ivana Mazic, a Dubai-based personal shopper. Ladies who prefer a more understated look, however, need not worry. Striking rainbow hues may be all the rage, but so too are creamy neutrals particularly tops and flowing tunics. Silk, chiffon and cotton are also big this summer in the form of sundresses, playsuits and jumpsuits, which, contrary to popular belief, can be flattering on both taller and more petite figures. Kelly Lundberg, a top personal stylist in Dubai, says, “Jumpsuits can elongate shorter frames. Petite people should steer away from big prints as these will just swamp the body, but if the hem touches the ground and you’re wearing big heels, the outfit will lengthen you. Taller people should go for tight, fitted ankles and more petite people for wider, longer legs.”

The same is true of maxi-dresses – smaller prints and floor-skimming hems for shorter frames and bold prints with a slightly raised hem for taller frames. Either way, expect to find both styles heavily discounted throughout DSS. Lace is also popular as seen on HRH the Duchess of Cambridge’s much-talked-about wedding dress at the end of April. “Once only reserved for formal wear, lace is showing up everywhere, not only on blouses, skirts and dresses, but on shoes and handbags too,” adds Mazic. STYLE TIPS No matter how well we think we know what suits our skin tone and body shape, we’re all guilty of the odd fashion faux pas from time to time. Whether it’s a garish animal-print lycra dress, layers of ruffles around broad shoulders or a crimson top matched with red hair, everyone has had their fair share of style disasters. This summer, be wary of the midlength skirt, says Lundberg. “These have been in all season, but they’re difficult to carry off and can look really frumpy because they’re such an unflattering length, stopping at the widest point of the calf. If you want to buy a mid-length skirt, it’s essential to team it with the right accessories and top otherwise it will look dated, a bit like your nan’s skirt. “It depends on the individual skirt as to what will work best with it, but you should especially think about whether the top is tucked in or not," she adds. The mid-length skirt works best on taller frames when it can look particularly elegant and feminine as seen here (right).

For Lundberg, BurJuman shopping centre, in Bur Dubai close to the Creek, is one of the best malls in the city. Much smaller than the emirate’s flagship The Dubai Mall, BurJuman is quieter, but excellent for high-end labels such as Ralph Lauren, Chanel, Dior and Hermès. “Village Mall is also excellent,” she says. “I always take my clients there and enjoy a cupcake after visiting Ayesha Depala, a Dubai-based designer with a beautiful range. So & Sew, founded by an Emirati designer, and Meher & Riddhima are worth visiting too for some local designs.” For Mazic, Mall of the Emirates is the place to shop. “The new fashion dome is great,” she says. “Mirdif City Centre is also one of my favourite malls.” The Dubai Mall offers extensive choice with more than 1,000 stores now open since it launched in 2008. But the centre, the world's largest shopping, leisure and entertainment destination, is mammoth, sometimes dauntingly so. If it’s high-end brands you’re after, head straight to the mall's Fashion Avenue, home to labels such as Gucci, Burberry, Versace and Armani. Alternatively, Bloomingdale’s, the mall’s anchor store, is an excellent onestop shop for all things designer. Boutique 1, located on The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence and at the Fashion Dome in Mall of the Emirates, is also packed with must-have haute couture pieces as well as Saks Fifth Avenue in BurJuman. Lundberg says, “This is my favourite store and the first place I will head to when DSS starts. Saks offers proper discounts, not 25% off, but 40 or 50% off. It’s the best sale in the city.” Other malls participating in DSS are Dubai Marina Mall, excellent for high-street brands, and Mercato, the Renaissancestyled mall on Jumeirah Beach Road.

With its towering skyscrapers and sprawling shopping malls it’s easy to focus on all things modern in Dubai. But this glamorous destination, a playground for the rich and famous, also offers a more cultural side not often seen by the millions of visitors who grace its shores each year. One of the best places to enjoy a taste of this local culture is the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU). Located in the picturesque Bastakiya, one of Dubai’s oldest quarters, the SMCCU aims to increase understanding between cultures in Dubai. Operating under the banner of ‘Open Doors, Open Minds’ the centre strives to remove barriers between people of different nationalities and raise awareness of the local culture, customs and religion of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). If you want to find out why local women wear black and men white, how Emirati food differs from more generic Arabic food or how the older generation of Emiratis view the destination’s extensive development, the SMCCU is the place to go. Run by a group of friendly locals all in close touch with the ways of the west, this fascinating organisation is the pearl in Dubai’s cultural crown.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum established the centre in 1998. Since then, it has evolved and now offers three interactive and engaging programmes for visitors: the Jumeirah Mosque tour, Bastakiya tour and perhaps most rewarding of all, the cultural breakfasts and lunches in which visitors can ask any question they like about local customs and beliefs. Held in the SMCCU’s charming windtower house, these frank and open discussions are hosted every Monday and Wednesday at 10am and Sunday and Tuesday at 1pm over a spread of authentic Emirati cuisine. Dishes, which are laid out on the floor, include balaleet (omelette and chick peas), khobbs khameer (bread) and lugamat (doughnuts served with sticky date syrup). Visitors are welcome to dig into the food and chat freely with the volunteers. 2

“No question is off limits, we have a ‘freedom to ask’ policy which means no one from SMCCU will be offended by, or laugh at, any questions you may have. We answer everything honestly and sincerely,” says presenter Souad Al Serkal. Popular topics for discussion include the need for Muslim women to cover their bodies, why Muslim men are allowed to marry more than one wife and the finer details of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month, which is expected to start on August 1st this year. Held in the open courtyard in the cooler winter months and indoors in summer, the discussions take place in a circle, majlis style, which means visitors are seated on cushions on the floor. Informal, insightful and incredibly popular, the breakfasts and lunches require advance booking.

MORE FROM A TOUR Tours of Jumeirah Mosque are also in high demand. With a strong interest among many non-Muslims to learn more about Islam, the SMCCU started offering guided tours of Jumeirah Mosque more than 10 years ago. One of the few mosques in the UAE open to non-Muslims, this majestic building on Jumeirah Beach Road, features ornate scriptures from the Qur’an and paintings of delicate flowers on the walls and archways. A focal point of the Open Doors, Open Minds programme, the tour gives a unique opportunity to learn about Emirati culture and Islam in a relaxed and open atmosphere. The tours are extremely popular with approximately 50 visitors attending each session. Both men and women must dress conservatively with loose trousers or long skirts, long sleeves and a head scarf for ladies. Visitors are welcome to take photographs so be sure to take your camera. “The tours last a little over an hour,” explains Nasif Kayed, one of the mosque’s guides and a volunteer at the SMCCU. “We talk about ablution, the mosque itself, Ramadan and Islam generally. We take any questions, even personal ones, and answer with fact not opinion.”

The tour runs every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10am. You do not need to reserve a place, but you must arrive at the main entrance of the Jumeirah Mosque by approximately 9.45am. Finally, the SMCCU offers three excellent tours around Bastakiya and Dubai Creek. The Bastakiya Heritage Tour lasts 90 minutes and includes a walk through Bastakiya and a visit to Bastakiya Mosque. Guests then return to the centre for a cultural question and answer session with Arabic tea, coffee and dates. Verre by Gordon Ramsay Some say abrasive, others say passionate. Whichever camp you fall into regarding Gordon Ramsay, you can’t deny the quality of his restaurants and his influence on the Dubai dining scene. When Verre opened a decade ago, it was the first celebrity restaurant in the city and Ramsay’s first outside the UK. In a fast-moving culinary environment it has managed to maintain its status as one of the best eateries in the emirate. While the figurehead oversees the restaurant on his frequent visits, the task of maintaining Ramsay’s particular standards falls on the shoulders of talented chef Scott Price. Given the scope to adapt the menu to incorporate the best produce available, Price adds his own signatures and style to the Ramsay formula. Revamped last year, the interior is a sophisticated, contemporary space that is elegant enough to let the food do the talking. Dinner guests can choose from the three-course set menu, with enough options to keep most diners happy (unless they happen to be Ramsay’s bête noire, the vegetarian). Alternatively, there is a superb degustation menu which provides samples of many of those same dishes – perfect if you can’t make up your mind. All dishes are meticulously presented, with quality ingredients and inventive combinations. An essential selection has to be the signature tarte tatin. Rhodes Twenty10 Dubbed ‘the don of British cuisine’, Gary Rhodes has a host of best-selling books and TV series to back up that claim. If Dubai’s summer temperatures leave you hot under the collar, don’t despair. Many of your favourite outdoor activities are available indoors for a chilled-out afternoon of adrenaline-fuelled fun
Skydiving Considering that skydives take place from a height of around 13,000 feet, it would seem that a freefall in a Dubai mall would be very brief and very dangerous. Yet the iFLY Dubai skydiving simulator in Mirdif City Center does not involve any scary jumps or parachutes and is safe for children as young as three. Granted, you won’t get a spectacular view, but it’s a fraction of the price of a tandem skydive and features a much longer freefall time. It’s made possible by gigantic fans over three metres in diameter which are

Snowboarding Obviously, snowboarding is impossible without snow, so a city in the desert should be far from ideal for winter sports enthusiasts. However, the mind-blowing Ski Dubai is, quite incredibly, covered with real snow all year round. Jutting out from the landmark Mall of the Emirates, the winter wonderland covers the equivalent of three football pitches and is maintained at temperatures between -1º and -2ºC. As well as containing a black run and a beginners’ run for skiers, Ski Dubai has a snowboardfriendly freestyle zone with an array of ramps, jumps and rails. Professional instructors are on hand to teach the basics or help intermediates polish their skills, while the zone hosts regular freestyle events. The admission price includes the rental of a snowboard, jacket and trousers, snowboard boots with disposable socks and a helmet for children. CUDDLE A CAMEL Synonymous with the Gulf region, the camel has played a significant role in desert life for thousands of years. Long used for transportation, trade, food and entertainment, these ships of the desert are deeply ingrained in Emirati life. Visitors to Dubai can get up close and personal with the iconic animals at several spots throughout the emirate. One of the best, however, is The Desert Ranch, located at Al Sahra Desert Resort on Al Lahbab Road, off Al Ain Road. Featuring 2.4sq km of natural desert, this ecotourism site is home to a collection of friendly camels. Meet the flock, learn their language, groom them, feed them and, if you’re feeling brave, you can even cuddle them. DIVE WITH SHARKS If you’re feeling brave, why not take on 10,000 pounds of lean muscle, not to mention 10,000 razor sharp teeth and dive with the largest collection of sand tiger sharks in the world? Anyone can experience the shark dive at Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, whether you’re a certified diver or not. EQUESTRIAN ACTIVITIES It may be too hot for horseracing and polo matches, but anyone with a passion for equestrian activities need not worry as there are still plenty of horsey options to keep you entertained. Around the world, dolphin shows and interactive programmes are incredibly popular and Dubai is no different. Since opening in November 2008, Dolphin Bay at Atlantis, The Palm has educated thousands of visitors about these gentle mammals through fun and hands-on experiences. Interaction takes approximately 90 minutes and involves a lesson about dolphins and how they are trained, as well as a brief run-through of the day’s programme. Then there are 30 minutes in the water where visitors can kiss and hug the dolphins. Visitors can also take a ride with a dolphin as she swims on her back to the shore. Dubai Dolphinarium at Dubai Creek is another great place to see these aquatic creatures. As well as the chance to swim with the dolphins, this popular family destination puts on regular dolphin and seal shows packed with information about marine mammals. DISCOVER For a more traditional Dubai experience, head to the banks of the Creek (pictured). Dubai Museum in Bur Dubai is a good starting point and will appeal to the entire family. Further along the Creek is the House of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, grandfather of the present ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The house features displays of old photographs, coins and maps of Dubai. The Heritage & Diving Village next door sells interesting handcrafted items such as carpets and shawls. Local women also prepare and sell tasty Emirati snacks here. On the Deira side of the Creek is the Spice Souk, Gold Souk and Perfume Souk, which are must-visits if you want a slice of culture. Further afield, Jumeirah Mosque is open to non-Muslims and offers
insightful tours every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The tours are run by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), a not-forprofit organisation that also runs cultural breakfasts and lunches at its base in Bastakiya, one of the oldest parts of Dubai. Visitors can ask the Emirati volunteers any question they like on local culture while enjoying homemade Emirati food. EXPERIENCE I recommend a city tour with a guide. Starting in Dubai Marina and ending at Dubai Creek, a good tour will explain the old way of life in Dubai before its development. The SMCCU, meanwhile, offers walking tours around Bastakiya, home to traditional wind towers and narrow pathways. The Emirati tour guide explains the history of the area
and what it offers visitors today. Tours should take place late in the day to avoid the sun. A dhow cruise along the Creek is also worth doing. SHOP For a traditional shopping experience, Khan Murjan, underneath Wafi shopping centre, is excellent. It sells souvenirs such as jewellery, carpets, pashminas, abayas (ladies’ traditional dress), postcards, toy camels and a few spices. Souk Al Bahar in Downtown Dubai sells similar souvenirs. It has lots of restaurants and cafés that overlook the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain, which performs to international and Arabic music. Finally, Souk Madinat Jumeirah is also home to lots of traditional shops. The old-style, but recently built souk has a romantic feel and looks out over the Burj Al Arab.
TASTE For Arabic cuisine, I recommend Al Khayal restaurant at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The food is fantastic and the service is great. There is also a belly dancer. Another good Arabic outlet is Al Iwan at the Burj Al Arab. Al Dawaar, the city’s only revolving restaurant, located at the Hyatt Regency Dubai & Galleria, serves Emirati dishes as part of its Friday buffet. Emirati food is difficult to find so if you’re keen to sample some dishes, the outlet is one of the best places to visit, along with the cultural breakfasts or lunches at the SMCCU. For shisha (hubbly bubbly), the Arabian Courtyard at the One&Only Royal Mirage serves lots of great flavours including strawberry, mint and grape. Here at the Ritz-Carlton Dubai we will soon be serving flavours such as raspberry cream and mango tango that have been created especially for the hotel. Last year’s tournament took place from December 2nd to 4th, with England clinching victory after a thrilling 29-21 win against Samoa in the final. Shisha, sometimes referred to as hubbly bubbly, is a water pipe used for smoking flavoured tobacco and can be found at cafés and bars across the city. Smoking shisha (hubbly bubbly) is very popular in Dubai. The Middle Eastern water pipe, which is thought to have originated around 500 years ago, purifies and cools the smoke from flavoured tobacco heated on top of the pipe by coals. It costs approximately AED35 to AED50 to smoke and the most popular flavours are apple, mint, strawberry, apricot and grape. Although relaxing and sociable, estimates suggest that an hour of shisha smoking equates to inhaling as many as 50 cigarettes. If you’re after an authentic taste of Middle Eastern culture, however, smoking shisha is a must. Just remember not to inhale too deeply, blow down the pipe to get rid of smoke build-up in the water and share your shisha amongst friends. This is a social tradition and to be enjoyed in groups or couples.
