Fabergé is no ordinary jeweller, not least because it is more famous for making ornate eggs than necklaces, rings or bracelets. It has also had a turbulent past fraught with setbacks from bloody revolution to bitter legal battles. Once accustomed to playing second fiddle to Dubai in the shopping department, Abu Dhabi is now rapidly catching up with several malls soon to open spurred by the recent launch of Avenue at Etihad Towers (pictured). Situated on the Corniche, this luxury emporium is the first mall dedicated to high-end fashion in the capital and offers shoppers a selection of high-end brands in an exclusive environment. Just down the road in Marina Mall, shoppers will find a blend of high-street and designer stores. Abu Dhabi Mall offers a similar mix while Al Wahda Mall houses popular brands such as GAP and Banana Republic. There’s also Khalidiya Mall, which features a wide range of stores from fashion and home furnishing to electronics and toy shops.

Most of the malls in the capital also have a selection of dining venues, while many house play areas where children can be minded by professionals allowing you the leisure to shop. To find out more, turn the the guide section on page 63.

Those with a taste for fine cuisine are in luck this month with two weeks of epicurean activities planned for Gourmet Abu Dhabi, the capital’s annual food festival.

If you miss the festival then don’t worry as Abu Dhabi offers no end of excellent fine dining opportunities. Head to Silk and Spice at Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche for authentic Thai cuisine served in a romantic setting or try Hakkasan at Emirates Palace, which serves the best contemporary Chinese food in town.

After dinner, there are some great night spots where you can carry the evening on into the small hours. The Yacht Club at the InterContinental Abu Dhabi is one of the trendiest bars in the city with music and dancing inside and a laidback terrace outside, where you can sip cocktails and admire the view of the marina. To get a higher perspective of the city, go up to Ray’s bar on the 62nd floor of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, where the famous mixed jelly drinks are a must-try.

Parties are not limited to the after-dark hours here. On Fridays, you can try the all-inclusive brunches served at most hotels around the capital or book an afternoon on the catamaran moored behind Emirates Palace, which offers day and night party cruises with a live DJ. For something more low-key, ask your concierge for details of Azure, a wooden sailing yacht that offers a relaxing cruise with snorkelling opportunities.

The best place to start for a cultural experience of the capital is the Big Bus Tour, where you can take in the highlights from the roof of an open-top double decker bus.

Make time to get off and join a tour at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the capital’s most beautiful landmarks.

Historically, Saluki dogs played an important role in Bedouin life, helping their nomadic masters hunt for much-needed food in the arid desert. Today, the high value placed on these animals in the UAE is evident at Abu Dhabi’s Arabian Saluki Centre, where the hounds live a life of luxury. Watch them take a dip in the swimming pool and eat cooked meals prepared with olive oil before being pampered by the centre’s doting handlers. TIME TRAVEL Abu Dhabi has taken a gigantic leap from humble fishing village at the turn of the 20th century to trailblazing metropolis just 100 years on Today, Abu Dhabi is one of the richest and most modern cities in the world. It’s home to the world’s furthest leaning manmade tower, the second most expensive hotel ever built and the third largest mosque on the planet – and that is just the icing on the cake. Visitors to the capital are greeted by opulent, five-star hotels, lavish shopping centres housing international brands and gourmet restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world. Residents, meanwhile enjoy the highest quality of life in the region. The UAE as a whole has one of the highest per capita incomes of any other country at nearly US$25,000 and the capital regularly appears at the top of lists in surveys determining the best places to live and work in the Middle East.

It hasn’t always been this way. Step back just 50 years and the picture looked very different. The iconic hotels, state-of-the-art skyscrapers and record-breaking structures were a distant dream and reality was a large swathe of reclaimed desert with indistinctive low-rise blocks clustered along the seafront. Move another 50 years into the past towards the turn of the century and the capital is entirely unrecognisable – just a patch of sand populated by fishermen’s huts. At this point, little had changed from when some factions from the ruling Bani Yas tribe moved here in 1793 to take advantage of the fresh water supply and sea beds rich in pearls.

The pearl trade grew rapidly throughout the 18th and 19 th centuries, soon becoming a vital resource for local families, who were unable to make a go of farming in the harsh desert environment. Then, just as quickly, demand dried up. The Japanese invention of the cultured pearl in the 1930s devastated the trade and a short period of hardship followed for coastal

dwellers in the UAE, at the time split into and known as, the Trucial States.

Just a few years later, another dramatic turnaround in fortunes came along with the discovery of oil.

In 1939, Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nayhan granted the first oil concessions, though it was not to be drilled for another 14 years. When it was, the initial impact was minimal. Construction was limited to those few nondescript, concrete buildings seen scattered along the coast in old photographs of the city.

Not until 1961 was the capital’s first paved road completed and there were to be no hotels for almost 20 years. Adopting a cautious approach to his domain’s new-found wealth, Sheikh Shakhbut was reluctant to reinvest oil revenue in the development of Abu Dhabi. His brother, however, felt differently.

The ruling Al Nayhan family decided that the younger Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayhan should replace his brother on the throne and set his grand plans for Abu Dhabi in motion. With the weight of ‘black gold’ behind him, Sheikh Zayed set about transforming Abu Dhabi from a sleepy backwater into the pioneering, futuristic city we see before us today.

Structures like the Capital Gate Building, Aldar HQ and the soon-to-be-built Zayed National Museum are firsts of their kind and set the tone for a new era of avant-garde architecture in the region.

Next to all these state-of-the art developments it’s hard to imagine a time when Abu Dhabi, along with its equally forwardmoving neighbour, Dubai, was not an international business and tourism hub.

The ambitious projects, luxurious facilities and iconic attractions have swept away most structural vestiges of the past and replaced them with the future. Nevertheless, the spirit of the old Bedouin ways of life lives on. The ancient codes of conduct that have governed tribal societies in this region for hundreds of years still ring true here today, most notably to visitors, in the Emirati tradition of hospitality towards strangers.

Q Situated between two record-setting structures with Ferrari World to one side and Yas Marina Circuit on the other, it would be easy for Yas Island’s new water park to appear overshadowed.

However, after one day spent enjoying the facilities here it is immediately clear that this park will have no trouble holding its own against its worldfamous neighbours. Not that it’s a competition.

Yas Island is setting itself up as Abu Dhabi’s entertainment hub and the more ground-breaking venues here the better.

That, at least is how Rashad Al Ghadban, marketing manager of Yas Waterworld, sees it. “Yas Island has already built its reputation as the leisure destination of Abu Dhabi and, for us, it made perfect sense to build the park alongside the island’s other great attractions,” he says. The facility has been designed to suit visitors of all age groups with 43 rides, slides and attractions, four of which bring something entirely new to the water park experience. Of these, the two most intriguing are Dawwama, the world’s first hydromagnetic-powered sixperson Tornado waterslide and Bubbles’ Barrel, the largest FlowBarrel 10 Double sheet-wave ride in the world.

Another must-try, Al Ghadban says, is the Bandit Bomber, which features coaches equipped with water bombs and laser guns to add a more interactive element to the coaster experience. “Tension builds as the coaches lift riders 23 metres though the air before diving downwards at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour, racing through splash zones, dips and climbs that curve around a central rock crag featuring a giant pearl.”

Pearls are central to the park’s design, which takes visitors back in time to the days when Abu Dhabi’s fortunes relied on the pearl trade. “We have themed all the attractions around the adventures of our main character, Dana, a young Emirati girl who has embarked on a quest to find a legendary pearl that will bring prosperity to the people of her village,” explains Al Ghadban.

The story is brought to life through the various attractions, each of which picks up a different stage of Dana’s adventures, from the PearlMasters interactive game, which takes players on a journey through the park in search of lost treasure to the interactive Pearl Dive Show where guests guide divers to the oyster of their choice before claiming the pearl inside.

Attractions are divided into four levels that begin with Moving and Grooving, where guests can enjoy floating gently down the lazy river on an inflatable doughnut or battle it out with friends in the Water Wars zone. To take it up a notch, they can try one of the 10 attractions from the Exciting Adventure category, which includes Falcon’s Falaj, the longest water slide in the Middle East. Those who dare can try out one of the attractions from Adrenalin Rush, which includes the park’s most extreme rides such as the Liwa Loop and Jebel’s Drop. There’s also the Young and Fun category, which covers toddlerfriendly features.

With so much on offer, it comes as no surprise that Yas Waterworld, which only

opened its doors last month, is already proving hugely popular and establishing itself as one of the capital’s hottest new attractions. Last year it was presented with the Leading Edge Award, an acknowledgement which, Al Ghadban says, testifies to the park’s innovation within the industry. “We are justifiably proud to receive this award and attribute it to the park’s carefully executed theme and cuttingedge design.”

heritage quest With an increasing number of luxury jewellers on the market, high-end brands are looking to the past to reinforce their image in the present

Q Competition on the jewellery scene grows fiercer by the day with a constant influx of new designers offering fresh interpretations of traditional styles and current trends. For established brands, the challenge is to maintain their position at the top of the pecking order and stand out from an ever-increasing crowd of contenders. To do this, many are revisiting the past and rummaging through their historical files to uncover pieces that tell their story. Brands like Bulgari, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Piaget, Cartier and many more, have hired archivists, contacted dealers and spent vast sums in an effort to build heritage collections worthy of representing and reaffirming their creative identities.

It’s a shrewd move, says Amandor Triossi, curator at Bulgari. “With so many jewellery brands out there today creating very similar products, there is a uniformity of offer across the board, so it’s very important to maintain one’s identity. Heritage collections are the ideal way to go about this and are becoming more and more important to brands as a way of conveying their DNA to the public.”

It also helps to lend the older jewellery houses an air of authority and strengthen their presence on the market. Van Cleef & Arpels has been gathering historic pieces for more than 20 years to build a collection that has been featured in exhibitions around the world. “This collection affirms our longevity and legitimacy in the field of jewellery and proves that Van Cleef & Arpels is not a spontaneous generation

of jewellers like so many of the names out there today,” says Catherine Cariou, director of the patrimonial department at Van Cleef & Arpels.

It’s not just vintage jewellery filling the brands’ safes. Alongside the art deco bracelets and Victorian pendants are documents and ledgers that testify to their time-honoured status. These pieces help to illustrate the story of the brands, from their humble beginnings as small family enterprises to their growth over the years into giants of the modern jewellery industry.

Among the items in the archives at Tiffany & Co. is the general ledger book from the first day of sales in 1837, which shows that the store initially operated as a stationery and fancy goods emporium. In 1853, however, Charles Tiffany took control of the joint enterprise and established its

focus on jewellery, travelling the world in search of rare gems to bring back to the US and place in his increasingly popular settings for the socialites and celebrities of the day.

Recently, a selection of jewels from different eras of the brand’s history were put on display in Dubai to accompany one of its most famous pieces, the Tiffany Diamond.

The enormous 287.42-carat stone was found in the Kimberley diamond mine in South Africa in 1877 and purchased by Charles Tiffany for $18,000 the following year, cementing his position as the ‘king of diamonds’. Tiffany’s reputation as a purveyor of fine and rare gems was further enhanced by his acquisition of around one-third of the French crown jewels at an auction in 1887. A number of these historic pieces were on display at the Dubai exhibit, including jewels once owned and worn by French Queen, Marie Antoinette.

Others in the display had been worn by more recent ambassadors, such as Audrey Hepburn, whose performance as Holly Golightly in the classic film Breakfast at Tiffany’s has enhanced the brand’s Hollywood image ever since, winning high-profile modern-day ambassadors, including Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway. “Hollywood and film continue to play a significant role in setting trends for style and glamour and the heritage collection helps to convey Tiffany & Co.’s long-standing links with these industries,” says Linda Buckley, vice president of international public relations.

At present, the brand is working on a new collaboration with Bas Lurman in his adaptation to film of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, for which it will provide jewellery inspired by the period. Other brands too, are placing emphasis on their links to Hollywood stars and style icons from former times.

In 2011, Bulgari spent around US$20 million buying back pieces that it had sold to Elizabeth Taylor in the ’60s and ’70s, a number of which were on display in the UAE capital that same year during Abu Dhabi Art.

Last year Cartier took the Hollywood heritage theme a step further with a short film designed to illustrate the brand’s 165-year history and emphasise its relationships with significant figures from the past. “We thought it was time to do it, especially because now everybody wants to be luxury – even a Big Mac is deluxe,” Francois Le Troquer, managing director of Cartier UK told Reuters at the time. “The world is changing, the economy is changing, the

geography of luxury is changing. We want to just remind people who we are at Cartier, ” he added.

Another reason why many leading jewellery houses are investing millions in stocking their archives is to help develop styles for the future. For the design team at Tiffany & Co., the heritage collection serves as a major source of inspiration, confirms Buckley. “Like everything else, it makes a huge different to see things in 3D and this collection provides a point of reference for Tiffany designers, who can go back and not only see the original sketches, but also examine the item itself and see exactly how it was put together.”

At Piaget, the archives have long acted as a mood board for the creation of new collections. “We consider it essential to keep a trace of our past. Patrimony has been a focus of many luxury brands for about 10 years now due to an increased understanding that history is the basis for the future and an incredible source of inspiration,” says Alain Borgeaud, head of the brand’s patrimony department. “The challenge is to find pieces that are really representative of Piaget’s DNA,” he adds.

This is the job of the archivist, who must travel the world scouring auctions, uncovering private collections and building relationships with dealers to be sure that when the right piece emerges, they are there to snap it up. According to Triossi, her job is rather like waiting in the Savannah. “You never know what’s going to surface next so you have to be ready. It’s always thrilling to see what the market conjures up.

“The recognisable Bulgari design really develops from the ’60s onwards and, as a lot of the wealthy collectors from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s are still alive and wealthy now, there’s not a huge amount of good vintage Bulgari on the market at the moment. It’s very frustrating if a really exceptional piece comes up when the budget has run out as then my hands are tied and it may be years before something similar comes up.”

Cariou agrees. “The biggest challenge is to compete with dealers and important collectors who sometimes have an unlimited budget. At the moment we are trying to fill the gaps in the collection – jewels from the ’50s and ’70s are under-represented. Recently we have made several important purchases that all epitomise the Van Cleef & Arpels style. One of these was an emerald zip necklace, a style seen very rarely at auction.”

Rarity is often more valuable than net worth to archivists, who generally focus on building collections that display a brand’s identity. “I don’t have an unlimited budget so I don’t buy a diamond solitaire or a jewel

with a fantastic central stone because with that amount of money I could get three objects that display different characteristics of Bulgari’s style. I try to avoid buying pieces that are too intrinsically valuable as then I’d use up my entire allowance for the year on one item and this collection is about showing Bulgari’s designs not displaying the best gemstones it has used over the years,” Triossi explains.

reach. “There are pieces that we hope will surface, while there are others that we would love to see again, but have a feeling have gone missing over the years,” says Buckley, adding that at Tiffany & Co. these items are kept secret to deter competition if they should turn up. For Van Cleef & Arpels, one such piece is the other half of a double peony clip ordered by the Egyptian crown in 1937. “We are also hunting for the bird of paradise from 1942, but the last record we have of it is at auction 30 years ago, which isn’t much to go on,” adds Cariou.

Once they have them though, these pieces are likely to be off the market for good as heritage collections prove increasingly valuable to leading jewellery houses. The intrinsic worth of these archives is rarely disclosed, though it is often in excess of a hundred million US dollars. To the brands themselves, they are like childhood photo albums filled with memories of the past and beyond the reach of monetary worth.

As Buckley says: “The collection does have a value, but we say it’s priceless because there are so many pieces in there that can’t be recreated, each of which has played a different part in Tiffany’s history and can be shared with the public as we tell our story.”

Q In kitchens across Abu Dhabi, chefs have gone into overdrive.

Hundreds of recipes detailing gastronomic delights are being carefully drawn up while pantries are filled to bursting with exotic ingredients, shipped in from all over the world to create food worthy of the occasion. For the city’s five-star restaurants, the pressure is on to shine when Gourmet Abu Dhabi kicks off on February 5 with a glitzy repertoire of chateau dinners, celebrity chef masterclasses and a lavish awards ceremony.

Marking the milestone This year will be the fifth anniversary of Gourmet Abu Dhabi (GAD) and 16 days of taste bud-tingling epicurean festivities have been planned to celebrate the occasion. The traditional programme has been revamped to include a series of intensive masterclasses and more of the popular live cooking displays with celebrity chefs. “After four successful showings, the new-look Gourmet Abu Dhabi will ensure this culinary extravaganza continues to raise the bar and drive our hospitality sector forward,” says Noura Al Dhaheri, leisure products development manager at Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi.) There will also be a renewed emphasis on Emirati cuisine and local ingredients with a new award for the best use of local produce by a chef.

Star attractions One of the biggest names at this year’s festival will be Irish cooking sensation Rachel Allen. The celebrity chef earned herself a reputation as Ireland’s ‘Queen of the kitchen’ after the launch of her television show, Rachel’s Favourite Food in 2004. Since then she has become one of the country’s best-known chefs and was recently awarded an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Belfast for her contribution to the culinary arts.

Known for her simple yet delicious dishes and practical approach towards cooking, Allen will be joining Gourmet Abu Dhabi for a celebrity dinner on February 10 followed by a culinary demonstration and luncheon on February 11 at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr.

Causing equal excitement among gourmet enthusiasts, but with a very different repertoire, is Chef Shinichiro Takagi.

One of Japan’s brightest young culinary stars, Takagi was the first international A-lister to sign up for the festival and is using his debut appearance in Abu Dhabi to create new fusion concepts inspired

by Arabic cuisine. His speciality is the fine culinary art of Kaiseki, a traditional Japanese dinner comprising numerous courses, where the aim is to achieve a balance of taste, texture, appearance and

colour of food. Only seasonal ingredients are used to create the meal and the final dish is carefully garnished with leaves and flowers. Kaiseki is considered the height of Japanese gastronomy and Chef Takagi will be demonstrating his mastery of the art at Teatro in Park Rotana Abu Dhabi from February 6 to 9.

Other culinary luminaries present at GAD include Sebastien Archambault, executive chef of the Blue Duck Tavern at Park Hyatt Washington, who will share his experience of cooking for White House residents with festival-goers on February 13 at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi. There will

A menu, prepared by previous winners of the Abu Dhabi Gourmet Stars Awards, will be served at an elaborate gala dinner before this year’s winners are announced. Dubbed the ‘Oscars of the local hospitality industry’, the awards recognise the individuals and

restaurants that have contributed most to the capital’s hospitality sector. Thirtynine finalists, whittled down by public vote, will compete before a panel of judges who will tour shortlisted venues over two weeks before announcing the winners of the 10 awards.

This year a new award for Best Use of Local Produce by a Chef will be given to the winning chef based on five criteria: taste, originality, creativity, presentation and preparation. Another new award, Best Sustainability Practise, will be presented by BBC Good Food Magazine for the enhancement, preservation and protection of certain produce and ingredients indigenous to Abu Dhabi. I was born and raised in Al Ain before moving to the capital in 2004 and have been really impressed by how the city and the emirate as a whole, has developed in that time. One of the things that has really struck me about living here is the year-round schedule of events, international shows, concerts and more. Of these, one of my favourites is the grand prix because it’s such a glamorous and fun weekend and represents everything I love about modern Abu Dhabi. I also like to attend the Liwa Festival every year because it showcases so many of our local traditions and is a great way to stay in touch with the true Emirati spirit.

My favourite event, of course, is Gourmet Abu Dhabi, which I have been involved with from the first edition in 2009. To prepare, the organising committee visited other international cuisine festivals around the world to see what we wanted to recreate here. We were bowled over by what we saw in Singapore and decided then that a world-class gourmet festival would do great things for Abu Dhabi’s fine-dining scene. It’s been amazing to see the festival develop since then and the capital’s culinary scene too, which has evolved considerably in recent years.

These days the city has so many restaurants featuring such a diverse array of cuisines that I feel spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a dining venue. Generally speaking though, there is nowhere better to enjoy a good meal and relax with friends than Nolu’s Café in Al Bandar, which serves tasty Afghani cuisine in a chilled-out Californiastyle environment. When I want to go somewhere smart, Hakkasan is generally top of my list as the ambience and atmosphere are exactly what I look for in a restaurant, right down to the music and lighting. I also love Ushna in the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri for its authentic Indian food and large portions – ideal for sharing a meal with friends.

Another thing I love about life in this city is the culture, which is extremely important to Emiratis. There are so many things to do and see here and plenty of opportunities for visitors to absorb our culture and heritage.

Personally, I like visiting my home, Al Ain in the emirate’s heritage heartland, where there are camel markets, palaces, forts, oases, art centres, souks and much more to enjoy.

Al Ain is really opening up for tourism and we’ll see more and more visitors going there in the future.
