November also means the welcome return of the calendar high point for motor sports lovers – the 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and this year the excitement reaches a peak with the world’s only twilight race on November 23 also being the season finale with double the points and double the action. The F1 weekend, which runs from November 21, is packed full of action. The main focus is on the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit, but the experience extends throughout Yas Island and the rest of our capital with the Yasalam entertainment programme being the world’s largest citywide activation. This year, the experience will be enhanced with the much-anticipated opening of Yas Mall – our largest shopping complex with over 300 stores and, of course, Yas Marina is more animated than ever before with its dancing fountains, more boat berths and a host of new restaurants and cafés. While we enjoy November, we can look forward to an equally thrilling yearend as we await the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet in our city around the middle of the month. When it arrives, the action will centre around our Destination Village on the Corniche Breakwater where there will be plenty of entertainment, sporting and learning opportunities for all the family as we celebrate our age-old ability to be at one with the sea. Abu Dhabi is one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in the world and within it Yas Island has changed the face of the emirate with so many entertainment attractions including Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, Yas Links and Yas Beach – all in one extraordinary destination. Abu Dhabi has won admiration for its ambitious plans to become a premier player in global culture. With the rapid development of Saadiyat Cultural District, soon to be home of the inimitable museum trio – Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi – the emirate has set its sights on creating a unique environment synergising world-class international and local talent. The return of the city’s annual art platform, Abu Dhabi Art, this month from November 5 to 8, marks a vivid illustration of the region’s bold intentions and evolving cultural landscape. Held at the 15,400-square-metre Manarat Al Saadiyat (which means ‘place of enlightenment’ in Arabic), Abu Dhabi Art is now in its sixth year and has become established as an exclusive fair and engaging community event. Around 50 modern, contemporary art and design galleries from around the world showcase museumquality work to artists, collectors, opinion leaders and scholars. The initiative, organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), also prides itself on delivering a multi-disciplinary experience with an interactive public programme designed to attract a wider consumer audience of all ages. “We are thrilled to be in our sixth year. One of the main highlights of this increasingly inclusive approach is Durub Al Tawaya, a performing arts element launched in 2013 as a range of acts that perform across the city. Public buses were transformed into colourful and moveable works of art, transporting people along a chosen route and there is more ingenious artistic expression in the pipeline for this season. Another important part of this year’s street-level activity is Beyond, which houses large-scale installations, sculptures and site-based commissions. Beyond is extending its reach across the city for the very first time in an exploration of the impact public art has in contemporary urban society.
“Part of our vision for Abu Dhabi Art and the wider goal of Saadiyat Cultural District as it welcomes the three upcoming museums, is to reach many different audiences,” Al Hammadi explains. Abu Dhabi Art now encompasses around 600 artworks and 400 artists and the programme is complemented by non-commercial aspects such as talks, workshops, book launches and tours for the whole family. “Art is unlimited and we have tried to create four days of celebration where everyone can enjoy it in many different ways. Diversity is always incredibly important for the developing art movement,” Al Hammadi continues.

Several of the UAE’s most prominent galleries will exhibit a broad spectrum of artists, including Dubai’s XVA Gallery, showcasing work from Halim Al Karim, Mahmoud Hamadani and Unkyung Hur. Born and raised in the UAE, Hassan Sharif is renowned as a pioneer of the conceptual movement in the Middle East and his work encompasses a number of disciplines including performance, installation, drawing, painting and assemblage. Also a founding member of the Emirates Fine Art Society, Sharif’s work is being exhibited by Abu Dhabi Art gallery Isabelle van den Eynde, which seeks to support the Middle East’s contemporary art scene. While regional galleries and local talent occupy a pivotal role, Abu Dhabi Art has always set out to occupy a solid position on the international stage. This global perspective has attracted leading galleries such as London-based Paul Stolper, returning for the third consecutive year and whose artists include Damien Hirst and Ben Johnson. new diamond-dust silkscreen spot prints, as well his iconic work inspired by Mickey Mouse, while Johnson fans can expect a new painting of Spain’s Alhambra Palace. “There is huge investment in art throughout the region and the excitement generated by Abu Dhabi Art reflects this. In such a short time, the fair has strengthened both its client base and programme,” says Stolper, director and owner of the eponymous gallery. 7
As the event continues to garner increasing attention on a global scale, the number of interested galleries has risen steeply. While any gallery looking to exhibit needs to have been established for a minimum of three years, the coveted Bidaya section is one exception to the rule, recognising an emerging gallery that stands out from the crowd. This year, New York’s Taymour Grahne Gallery has been selected for the honour. Half-Lebanese, half-Finnish and born in London, Grahne’s own interest in the Middle Eastern art scene began one summer as a teenager in Beirut when he set out to explore the cultural gems of the region and ignited a passion that led to the creation of his blog, Art of the Mid East. In 2013, Grahne opened his gallery in Tribeca. “The UAE has played a pivotal role in the development of the Middle Eastern art scene and, without its efforts, the artistic environment would not have grown so rapidly. There is always such an amazing scope at Abu Dhabi Art,” says Grahne. With Louvre Abu Dhabi scheduled to open next year, followed in 2016 by Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi in 2017, excitement is definitely building and with the continued success of Abu Dhabi Art, Saadiyat’s cultural quarter has a bright future ahead.

Voyage of discovery A fascination with Arabian tribal societies prompted Wilfred Thesiger – arguably the greatest traveller of the 20th century – to journey into the remote desert Words by

Legendary British explorer Wilfred Thesiger lived his entire life as an outsider, rejecting the modern world in favour of the tribespeople of Africa and Arabia. Regarded as one of the last in a breed of traditional explorers, Thesiger was a man who trekked across post-war Abyssinia, lived among the Turkana and Samburu people of Kenya, travelled with the Bakhtiari nomads in Iran and explored inner Afghanistan. All these journeys – and many more besides – were made either on foot or by camel, horse or mule. Yet none gave him as much joy as the two epic journeys he made between 1945 and 1950 across Arabia’s Empty Quarter, the largest sand desert in the world. These expeditions came about as a result of a chance encounter over dinner with the head of the Middle East Anti-Locust Unit, looking to employ someone to investigate locust sites in the desert. Thesiger, who had been seeking an opportunity to fulfil his ultimate ambition of travelling through the most forbiddingly desolate area of Arabia, accepted the job before the meal was over. The journey he embarked upon is now legend and has seen others follow in his bold footsteps. The words and images charting the epic feat that Thesiger left behind are not only testament to the enduring spirit of exploration but the captivating power of some of the UAE’s most majestic landscapes.

Journey of a lifetime Outwardly in search of the breeding grounds of predatory locusts, Thesiger made his first crossing of the Empty Quarter between 1946 and 1947. He travelled by camel with a small group of Bedouin, taking a circular route of some 2,414 kilometres through the eastern part of the desert from Salalah to Mughshin, Khaba and back to Boi. The journey crossed into the UAE from Oman to Liwa and Abu Dhabi. Noteworthy is the fact that he was not the first foreigner to venture across these silent sands. However, others before him had travelled as well-supplied westerners and only skirted the region. Thesiger, in contrast, explored it thoroughly, dressed in the same garb as the Arab tribesmen with whom he rode and restricted himself to their daily ration of a pint of water and handful of dates. Life amid the harsh Arabian landscape was monastic at best, yet it was here that the great wanderer found near-spiritual contentment. “In the desert,” he wrote, “I found a freedom unattainable in civilisation; a life unhampered by possessions.” His second expedition took place in 1948, traversing the western part of the desert from Manwakh to Sulaiyil, Laila and Abu Dhabi on the Gulf. up to 161 kilometres long and 1,000 feet high and death threats from rival tribes, Thesiger became the first European to set eyes on the notorious quicksands known as Umm al Samim bordering Oman. The crossing of the Empty Quarter is a journey now remembered as the last great expedition across Arabia and was chronicled by Thesiger in his precise yet emotionally charged book, Arabian Sands. Widely regarded as a classic of travel literature, it is illustrated with the explorer’s haunting black and white images. By documenting his journeys in photographs, maps, diaries and letters
to his family, Thesiger recounted invaluable tales of a region that has forever been transformed by the discovery of oil beneath its sands and helped create an imperishable record of vanishing tribal societies. While the impact of his journeys and subsequent book is undeniable, Thesiger was also overwhelmed with guilt over his role in exposing a previously hidden land and bringing the modern world to it. Accounts indicate that many of his Bedouin companions secured jobs as guides with oil companies and gave up their traditional way of life, while the maps he made enabled others to follow him.

The man, the myth, the legend
Several years after Thesiger’s death in 2003 at the age of 93, many re-enactments of his journeys through the Empty Quarter have taken place as a tribute. Adventurer Adrian Hayes’ Footsteps of Thesiger expedition in 2011 is one well-known example. With the help of Bedouin companions, the Dubai-based British explorer and adventurer embarked on a 44-day, 1,609-kilometre expedition in the same vein as Thesiger’s, donning traditional robes and eschewing modern equipment wherever possible. “With Thesiger an iconic figure in the Arabian Gulf, we were accorded huge respect from Bedouin villagers, some of whom met and rode with him in the 1940s. We struggled through some of the harshest landscape on earth, a terrain that is as beautiful as it is brutal and we learned the harsh realities of attempting an authentic re-enacted expedition 65 years after his own,” says Hayes of the experience. Thesiger had journeyed with many Bedouin tribesmen during his travels, but Hayes is referring to his two constant companions, Salim bin Kabina and Salim bin Ghubaisha of the Rashid tribe. Now in his 80s, bin Ghabaisha remembers Thesiger fondly. “He was loyal, generous and afraid of nothing. He was a wonderful man to travel with.”
Those who knew Thesiger describe him as a man of many contradictions. In the desert, he dressed as his Arab acquaintances did, but reverted to sporting three-piece suits and bowler hats when in London. The private and reserved gentleman traveller never married, feeling most at home with the nomadic peoples with whom he travelled. Architect and author Alexander Maitland was a close friend of Thesiger and is the man behind his authorised biography titled Wilfred Thesiger: The Life of the Great Explorer. “He had a tremendous presence, although he was very gently spoken and didn’t have a particularly strong handshake. In fact, everything about him was rather genteel; almost diffident in a way. “He came to the desert and fell in love with the people, with the timelessness connected with their world, the kindness and generosity; all values Wilfred attached great importance to and I think the feeling was mutual. Among other things they felt he really understood, or at least as far as it is possible for a European to understand, what it means to be a Bedu.” Maitland adds: “K nowing him was a wonderful experience and it was a wonderful friendship. I feel genuinely privileged to have known him.”

Heaven scent Italian luxury brand Bulgari unveils Le Gemme, a new range of fragrances that is every bit as extraordinary as its jewellery WORDS BY

It’s been a time of great excitement and celebration at Bulgari of late. There have been celebrations for the brand’s 130th anniversary and, last year, the appointment of a new Jewellery Creative Director, Lucia Silvestri. While she may be reasonably fresh in the top job, Silvestri began her career with Bulgari aged just 18. “One of the first things I learned is to select and then acquire gems only if I could see a possible use for them, which means that in the very act of purchasing, before the design and realisation phases, I imagined compositions of colour and forms that suggested the pieces of jewellery they might become,” she says of her hands-on approach to gemstones. After years of working with the Bulgari brothers (Nicola and Paolo), Silvestri’s sense of taste is perfectly aligned with their vision – bold, chromatic combinations that surprise and stir – but she also brings a very feminine approach to every single design. That a piece of jewellery feels comfortable and sits elegantly on the skin is of paramount importance to her and it’s this sense of wearability that has characterised the brand’s scents up until now. “Much of the popularity of the existing Bulgari fragrances is that they are discreet and
easy to wear,” explains Valeria Manini, managing director of Bulgari’s fragrance division. The scents and jewellery were equally refined, but the former erred on the quiet and amiable side compared to the more audacious rings, necklaces and bracelets. As Manini explains, it was time for the fragrances to “reconnect with the bold side of Bulgari”. And so Le Gemme was born, an haute parfumerie range of six exquisite fragrances, each a “hymn to the colour, light and emotion of the stone it celebrates”. The line-up is as follows: Amarena (tourmaline), Ashlemah (amethyst), Calaluna (moonstone), Lilaia (peridot), Maravilla (citrine) and Noorah (turquoise). “These new fragrances have much more character and will appeal to the discerning clients who buy our Bulgari jewels, but perhaps couldn’t find a fragrance answer within our previous offering,” says Manini. These are punchy perfumes that will appeal to noses that know their notes. To some eyes, the colour combinations found in Bulgari jewellery are as extraordinary as they are beautiful and, in the same vein, these fragrances may smell unfamiliar to some. It’s this point of difference that makes them all the more magnificent.

The Le Gemme collection has been three years in the making and was a special project from start to finish, explains Manini. “It was very important that we studied each gem. We worked with a therapist and historians to understand and capture the power of the gems and then we delivered these findings to the perfumers.” Bulgari only worked with master perfumers for this project and, in the first instance, approached a group of around eight; an early idea was to have different scents created by different people. She was consistent, but different, focusing on each emotion, for example, amethyst is a gem of spirituality and meditation.” Interestingly, Andrier was the only female among the panel of perfumers who had been asked to work on Le Gemme. “I think her being a woman was the key, because she had an emotional intuition,” says Manini. “Andrier herself isn’t so sure and believes that her contribution
to the project was about more than just her gender. “It’s more about who I am. I am a happy mother and wife and this contributes to my work.” This sense of optimism radiates from each of the fragrances she created. Despite this being one of the most expensive projects she’s ever worked on, in terms of raw materials, she doesn’t believe in ‘good’ or ‘bad’ fragrances. “It’s very personal. Any fragrance is beautiful on a woman as long as she is happy to wear it. Perfume is first and foremost a relationship with oneself. The imaginative world it brings to life is entirely composed of emotions which are unique to every one of us.” Andrier began the creative process by focusing on the colour of each stone and the ancestral beliefs associated with it. She created all six fragrances in the space

of one month and then spent the next year finessing them. “If you feel inspired, then writing the formula comes quickly.” Before becoming a perfumer, Andrier studied philosophy, which she feels informs her choice of notes. It’s difficult to think of a better person to take us on this new olfactory trail. For Manini, the new fragrances mark only the beginning. She says: “These particular gemstones correspond to the creation of Bulgari, but we haven’t reached precious stones such as sapphires and rubies yet. We will continue the journey.”

Formula 1 has undergone a revival of sorts since the governing body, Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), introduced new engines and race rules this year. Enthusiasts are on the edge of their seats as the reign of Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s driver Sebastian Vettel, who has won the championship for four years in a row, seems to finally be coming to an end. The re-energised Mercedes AMG Petronas team looks particularly strong, with its drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, dominating headlines of late with their passionate rivalry. However, double points are being awarded for the first time at the 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from November 21 to 23, so teams will be pulling out all the stops for a chance to take home the championship title in the UAE capital. As 60,000 spectators take their places at the grand prix’s venue Yas Marina Circuit and millions more worldwide tune in, final organisational touches following months of planning and preparations are taking place behind the scenes for the sporting finale of the decade.

Golden hour Since its addition to the season back in 2009, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been a crowd favourite as it’s the only day-and-night race in the calendar. This month sees the most exciting Abu Dhabi grand prix ever with Yas Marina Circuit not only hosting the season’s final race once again but also offering double points to the drivers. It has taken many months of meticulous planning to get this far and Yas Marina Circuit has worked hard to set the stage for another ground-breaking edition. Start your engines As the officially nominated representative of the FIA in the UAE, the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE) oversees all motor-sport activity in the country, including the 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, under the direction of President Dr Mohammed Ahmed Ben Sulayem. Overseeing the sporting side of the event, the ATCUAE has an enormous responsibility, explains Ronan Morgan, who is also clerk of the course (sporting manager) and manages the many different departments involved, including medical and recovery teams, specialised pit-lane teams, flag marshals and intervention marshals. “There is quite a vast array of experience involved in what we do. All of the men and women involved are UAE-based volunteers and there is a total of about 700 people at the event. A lot of them are expatriates, but about 20 percent are Emiratis. It is really great to see to local involvement,” adds Morgan. Volunteers have to be trained every year which Morgan oversees with the help of a core ATCUAE team of about six personnel.
“When we started, we didn’t have the in-house expertise, so we imported people mostly from the UK to help us run the race. We had a five-year plan to become self-sufficient with just UAE-based people and, within three years, we achieved that,” adds Morgan. “The dedication of our race volunteers is quite amazing because it’s over four days and people sometimes have to take time off work. They are on duty from 6.30am until at least 8pm and it’s hugely draining because they have to be really sharp all the time.” During race weekend, Morgan will be in the control room with FIA race director, Charlie Whiting, in front of a bank of 32 screens, surveying the track. Should anything happen, Whiting will pass on instructions to Morgan who is then responsible for guiding his team to immediate action. “You have to have an instantaneous response to anything that happens so our communications have to be really sharp. There are about 20 to 25 people in the core team who are basically departmental managers and they would know how to manage their teams, but it’s quite intense. You just never know what’s going to happen,” he says.

Designed by German racer and engineer Hermann Tilke, Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Island, presents one of the most formidable challenges for talented Formula 1 drivers, where their endurance and skills are put to the test at every harrowing turn. The track features nine right turns and 11 left turns and is one of the few venues to run in an anti-clockwise direction. Catalan The first Catalonian restaurant in Abu Dhabi, Catalan at Rosewood Abu Dhabi is a blend of traditional and contemporary with white and gold décor. When it first opened last year, the double Michelin-starred restaurant’s chef Antonio Saez, introduced flavours of northeastern Spain to the UAE capital but has since passed over the chef’s hat to worthy successor Francisco Sanabria who has experience in Michelin three-starred restaurants in Spain. “At Catalan, we try to respect the product and its flavour. As much as possible, we always try to work with local products but our main ingredients come from Barcelona. I use traditional recipes and then mix the Catalan culture with Abu Dhabi,” explains Catalan’s chef de cuisine Sanabria who has been applauded for his new menu, highlighted by dishes such as the carabinero tartare and slow-cooked milk-fed baby lamb shoulder that can be paired with specially selected wines from Spain. To his credit, all tasting menus are now tailored to the visitor so Sanabria and his team often craft dishes from scratch to cater to demands of an all-seafood menu or other requests. He says Catalan offers a breadth of choice for discerning guests reflecting the reality of Spanish food.

Hakkasan Abu Dhabi Originally founded in London in 2001, Hakkasan today serves its brand of delightful Asian flavours to the world under the guidance of international executive chef Ho Chee Boon. Boon moved to the US in 2012 to launch Hakkasan New York which was awarded a Michelin star within eight months of opening. F O R A L L TA S T E S The UAE capital is playing host to the debut edition of Taste of Abu Dhabi – an al fresco celebration of flavours that brings together good food, drink and entertainment – at du Arena on Yas Island from November 6 to 8. Dubai was the first UAE city to host the world’s most popular restaurant festival in 2008, and now it’s time for Abu Dhabi to take centre stage. The inaugural edition of Taste of Abu Dhabi will pair 15 fine-dining restaurants and celebrity chefs including Jun Tanaka and Eric Lanlard with an entertaining line-up of music and interactive programmes on food for a fun day out with the family. “Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene has been thriving in recent years and Taste of Abu Dhabi will provide the perfect forum for people to really see and taste what the city has to offer,” says Chris Fountain, managing director of event organisers Turret Media. The UAE capital’s bar scene is flourishing and top venues across the city are competing with more extensive drinks menus and pioneering bespoke mixes that are quickly becoming the talk of the town. Bartending is widely regarded as one of the world’s oldest professions with historical records showing that inns near key transport routes served wine to weary travellers during the time of Julius Caesar. Bartenders, now often known as mixologists, take deep pride in crafting signature cocktails and also spend a considerable amount of time creating new and extraordinary concoctions. As a result and as recipes become more complex, part of the experience of ordering a drink today is watching them create chosen orders. From lively mixology shows to the inventive use of rare spirits, a whole new world awaits visitors across Abu Dhabi that takes the concept of a drink far beyond the realms of imagination.

Chameleon Trendy bar and lounge Chameleon is a place to see and be seen. Enthusiastic mixologists whip up signature cocktails as fashionably clad guests socialise over music spun by resident DJs indoors or relax outside on the terrace overlooking the canal. The menu includes a range of small and large culinary offerings but the highlight is the beverages. Bartender George Kutty says: “At Chameleon, we believe that putting together a drinks menu that will stand out from the competition requires a well-skilled bartender who is gifted with the art of mixing drinks in a unique way. We focus mostly on the craft of mixing cocktails, studying the classics, concocting new and exotic drinks and experimenting with lesser-known distilled spirits and mixers while keeping in mind the market’s demand. These methods enable the creation of greater intensities and varieties of flavour combinations and different ways of presenting drinks.” The menu is extensive and while patrons may notice familiar names, many of these entail a special Chameleon twist. Kutty explains: “The most sellable and common drink at Chameleon is the mojito but we always try to add new ingredients to the

classic recipe to give our guests a variety of choice, for example our successful Cool Cucumber Mojito with a cucumber and elderflower twist. We have also introduced Aperol Spritz; a new classic-style drink consisting of a base of Aperol topped with Prosseco and fresh orange and lemon.” Chameleon adopts a very personable style of bartending. drinks to offering personalised mixes to suit the individual tastes of their guests, bartenders are on hand to accommodate. “Crafted cocktails, an interesting wine list, micro-brewed beers and a fine selection of quality spirits are all indicators of a quality bar; but to enhance one’s experience, it always comes down to the bartender’s ability to interact with the guest,” Kutty says. “A great bartender can prepare a drink while explaining the ingredients, providing tips and telling stories linked to the drink or ingredients, which makes it more interesting. At the bar, beverages are approached as far more than thirst-quenchers. Likening mixology to the preparation of quality cuisine in the kitchens of the world’s top restaurants, bar manager Gatis Ozols says: “The key to making excellent drinks is the freshness of the produce and ingredients used. At Ray’s Bar, we only use the freshest produce delivered to us daily. Also, we use special ingredients such as Tonka bean bitters (homemade) regional spices, cardamom and nutmeg to make our drinks stand out. “Aside from that, we also use our own infused vodkas and have managed to design a new cocktail genre called Infusions. While making the drinks, we stick to the classic methods while trying out something new such as infusing the ultra-premium spirits like Hennessy Paradise with Dom Perignon Champagne and Barrel Aged Orange Liqueur.
Such cocktails require special attention and great care while preparing.” Staying ahead of the curve with regards to innovative thinking, the bar frequently tries out the latest global trends such as the current fad of serving barrel-aged cocktails along with carbonised drinks. Ensuring that beverages are of high quality is of upmost importance and the team maintains strict standards. All drinks are served within 180 seconds of preparation and the size and amount of ice added is carefully guided. In addition, the temperature is carefully considered and glassware

Zuma Abu Dhabi Zuma is known around the world for its contemporary Japanese cuisine, creative décor and use of top-quality ingredients. However, while much focus remains on the kitchen, the bar also deserves a closer look. At Zuma Abu Dhabi, expert mixologists combine the best components to prepare simplistic yet luxurious beverages. Sit at the restaurant’s dark-wood standalone bar to gain the full experience and watch skilled bartenders work their magic. “The process of creating a cocktail is a visual delight to our guests, but I assure you, there is some method to the madness,” bar manager, Zuma Middle East, Jimmy Barrat says. “Every action in the course of making a beverage has a purpose attached to it. A drink may be smoked with carefully selected wood to enhance the final result, not just because it’s fascinating to look at but because it truly elevates all senses.” As well as wood, ice is a key ingredient that’s used in highly creative manners to control the dilution rate and temperature of beverages. “Ice is to us bartenders what fire is to chefs. It is the most important ingredient in a beverage,” muses Barrat, explaining that some beverages such as stirred cocktails call for inconsistent ice chunks while others, like sour negroni, receive circular ice balls. Zuma even has an ice sculptor who creates pieces in front of guests’ eyes. Looking at the drinks menu, customers are inundated with options from indulgent fresh fruit sake, to contemporary beverages

and more refined classic mixes. At Zuma locations across the globe, the list of signature cocktails remains consistent but in each region, options are customised to suit the preferences of the customers. Barrat explains that signatures at the Abu Dhabi outlet reflect a passion for historic Victorian classics with a hint of Japanese influence. Above all, to Barrat, bartending is about passion: “Standing behind the bar and watching the magic unfold right in front of me is an experience I never tire of. I simply love it,” he says. Now, as education workshop manager for the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, I am immersed in Middle East culture every day. Art and culture are the main focus of my job – I develop, design and produce educational art programmes connected to the upcoming museums in the Saadiyat Cultural District and educational programmes related to UAE heritage and culture events in Abu Dhabi. I also create artwork in my free time, whether it is drawing, painting, printmaking or making furniture and toys for my children. Abu Dhabi is pretty much home to me now but, when I feel a little homesick, I often find myself playing football with Al Raha Football Club or meeting up with friends in the city. When friends come to visit, I like to take them to the exhibitions at Manarat Al Saadiyat as they are always interesting and engaging. I also take them to Qasr Al Sarab in the Empty Quarter. The desert is really awe-inspiring and has to be experienced firsthand. Kayaking through the Abu Dhabi mangroves is a wonderful experience, too, especially with
the skyscrapers shining in the distance – the mangroves are almost the equivalent of the countryside for the emirate. For breakfast on Friday mornings, I often head to the Fanr restaurant at Manarat Al Saadiyat or Hickory’s Sports Bar at Yas Links Golf Club because both offer superb food combined with relaxed outdoor children’s play areas and a blissful ambience. Other restaurants in Abu Dhabi I really enjoy eating in include Nalukettu at the Abu Dhabi Marina and Yacht Club for its authentic dishes from the coastal state of Kerala in India and would recommend having a picnic at the Emirates Palace cricket grounds with friends when the weather is cooler. My favourite destination for shopping is the Souk and Mall at the World Trade Centre because of its look and feel; a current interpretation of a traditional souk that combines classic Arab architecture with modern design. November is the best time to be in Abu Dhabi because of Abu Dhabi Art and 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Having the opportunity to see and experience museumquality art and world-class sport and live musical performances is amazing. I have many fond memories of my time in the UAE, with hopefully many more to come.
