Dubai’s creative community plays an important part in the city’s story. From the painter in his old-town studio creating portraits of people and places, to the cutting-edge design collective representing the modern face of the emirate, their interpretations contribute to a rich multicultural narrative. For visitors, this means there is much to discover on a bustling arts scene where exhibitions, events and entire districts are dedicated to art and design. The issue’s creative focus this month is an opportunity to meet some colourful characters, and explore another side to the city. The mastery of aesthetics and the highest craftsmanship standards sees A. Lange & Söhne’s place as one of the world’s finest watchmakers assured. On page 48, we take a look inside the company’s new Glashütte manufactory where talented artisans are busy crafting the future of timepiece design. The very first Dubai Design Week opens this month, bringing not only a wealth of talent to town, but a renewed focus on creativity in the emirate. Turn to page 65 to learn more. For an inside view, Emirati designer Khalid Shafar considers design in Dubai in his column on page 73. In this month’s photo essay, on page 74, Concierge photographer Adham Sneeh spends the day with architect-turned-artist Michael Arnold, whose monoprint technique offers a beautiful portrait of the UAE. Finally, if you’re feeling inspired by the magazine, visit myconcierge.com to book an experience and start your Dubai adventure.

The Empty Quarter Gallery in Dubai is hosting a new exhibition titled Middle Eastern Talks. Running until November 5, the collection brings together remarkable photography in a rich portrait of the region. Having explored the Middle East to capture fascinating moments, artists including Jordi Esteva, Amani Al Shaali and Issa Saleh Al Kindy offer perspectives from Yemen and Oman. In 2011 Esteva travelled to Socotra (pictured), an isolated island in Yemen, which is surrounded by a reef and has no bay or natural port. Al Kindy’s intriguing images show the making of Omani rose water, and the way in which petals are carefully selected by local farmers following ancient tradition. Visit: theemptyquarter.com

—— Artistic excellence and extraordinary craftsmanship come together in the Meisterstück Sfumato Collection from Montblanc. Revisiting a painting technique honed by Italian master Leonardo Da Vinci during the Renaissance, the sfumato effect has been applied to calfskin leather to create a series of contemporary briefcases, totes, wallets, coin cases and card holders. Da Vinci described sfumato as a style ‘without borders’ for a seamless, shaded effect. Crafted in the Maison’s Pelleteria in Florence, four layers of paint are applied to each individual piece of leather. Fine shading and delicate graduation of colours then gives a shadowed, intricate finish. Contemporary details such as a new signature lock and sliding top handle are the perfect complement to the flawless aesthetic, while a grey suede lining adds a sophisticated touch. The Meisterstück Sfumato Collection is available at Montblanc’s flagship boutique in The Dubai Mall. Contact: 04 4340300

“LIKE MONTBL ANC, I SEEK TO STRIKE A BAL ANCE IN THE DESIGN BET WEEN THE SIMPLICIT Y OF THE FUNCTIONAL QUALITIES OF THIS PRODUCT AND THE CREATION OF A SENSORY EXPERIENCE IN ITS USE” —— Marc Newson

The latest writing instrument from Montblanc perfectly embodies a synergy between the highest standards of craftsmanship and the design flair the Maison is known for. Montblanc M is the result of an interesting collaboration between Australian designer Marc Newson and the German brand. “For the first ever design partnership in the Maison’s long history, Montblanc has chosen to work with Marc Newson, without a doubt the most influential designer of his generation,” says Jérôme Lambert, Montblanc CEO. He adds: “Montblanc M brings together Newson’s trademark biomorphic style, defined by its fluid and pure organic forms, and Montblanc’s iconic design cues, resulting in a new and unexpected expression for writing instruments.” The distinctive shape comes in the form of a ‘plateau’ at the end while the black resin finish gives a sleek feel. The iconic white Montblanc emblem appears twice, on the cap and at the end of the plateau. Elsewhere, clever additions include a magnetic pull to allow the cap to close with ease. “Like Montblanc, I seek to strike a balance in the design between the simplicity of the functional qualities of this product and the creation of a sensory experience in its use,” explains Newson. He adds: “From the sight of the shape’s clean lines or the detailed plating of the nib, to the sound of the click of the cap as it is drawn to the body of the writing instrument with the magnet, Montblanc M offers a seamless writing experience that engages the senses.” Montblanc M is available as a fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint, screenwriter for use on touch screens and as a thin Montblanc Artfineliner for technical drawing.

An artistic investment ——— Whether collector, curator or art enthusiast, Dubai’s lively cultural scene is brimming with interesting venues for visitors to browse or buy works from the region and beyond Words by Olivia Cuthbert

2

Every day, hundreds of people pass by the Opera Gallery window. Whether racing to work in the mornings, rushing to a lunch meeting or heading home at the end of the day, many will pause to look at the art displayed in the window, which changes every 10 days to ensure there’s always something fresh to see. This is Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), the city’s bustling business district. Among the professionals working here and the visitors exploring the space, there are many potential buyers who might pop in to enquire about a particular display or to spend some time in the exclusive Black Room where prized pieces are worthy of a considerable investment. For high-end art, DIFC is the city’s go-to destination. Here, in one of the region’s most important business hubs, there is also an interesting mix of prestigious art houses, trendy restaurants and some of the city’s most distinctive architecture. For visitors to the city, a visit to DIFC is a chance to explore an excellent collection of galleries, including Cuadro Fine Art Gallery, Ayyam Gallery and Opera Gallery, in addition to international auction house Christie’s. The area has become something of a hub for the arts with regular cultural events and a dedicated walking tour for visitors looking to become better acquainted with the local scene. “Over the years, DIFC has achieved a great balance in promoting the area as a hub for arts and fine dining. From a target market perspective, it made a lot of sense to open the gallery here, since most potential art buyers either work in DIFC, or are frequent visitors,” says Sylvain Gaillard, general manager of Opera Gallery in Dubai. The gallery offers a mix of both contemporary pieces and classics. Its prestigious Black Room is given over to works by the great masters with an impressive roster to have graced the walls including Picasso, Chagall, Renoir, Dali and Matisse. Gaillard adds: “Over the years, the Black Room in Dubai has been home to some remarkable artworks – in January we had a late Renoir on display behind velvet ropes, and the public’s reaction was amazing, everybody felt that they were staring at a living testament of art history.” The special room is a privileged space. Present in each of Opera Gallery’s 12 branches around the world, it fits particularly well into the Dubai art scene where buyers appreciate the added air of exclusivity as they consider the purchase of a major piece. The way the room is set up with thick padded velvet walls, dim mood lighting, a large seating area and, of course, stunning masterpieces, creates a very intimate relationship with the paintings on display, allowing the gallery’s visitors to get up close and personal with art works that would otherwise only be seen in a museum. Gaillard adds: “Having art in an otherwise very business and finance oriented neighbourhood adds a nice touch to the overall feel of the area.”

DIFC is one of several art hubs in Dubai, which has steadily established a presence at the helm of the wider regional scene. The strength of the local artistic landscape is also gathering pace in the international sphere, with its growing roster of galleries and a number of high-profile art events, including the annual Art Dubai fair. As one of the oldest galleries in the emirate, Showcase Gallery has witnessed the evolution of Dubai’s art scene since the 1980s and 1990s when it revolved around a few locally based artists from abroad who added a regional flavour. “With the emergence of the Middle Eastern Art movement around 2004, things really picked up with many new galleries opening up and exposing new art from Iran, Iraq, Syria and other countries in the region. The establishment here of international auction houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams added to the zest of buyers who view Middle Eastern art as a good investment,” says Showcase Gallery director Sharon Harvey. The Gallery is based in Alserkal Avenue – the heart of Dubai’s grassroots arts community. This is where many of the emirate’s homegrown initiatives have set up shop, giving it a raw local feel that appeals to buyers and browsers looking to get a sense of the idiosyncratic scene in Dubai. “Alserkal Avenue is the first organically-grown art district in the Middle East. Starting out as warehouses for the motor industry, it has transformed over a period of six years into a thriving art district as, one by one, the motor workshops were taken over by art galleries and other creative industries,” explains Harvey. The set up here is ideal for galleries with high ceilings and spaces that offer a blank canvas for creative settings. “It is a much needed venue where residents and visitors to Dubai can experience something other than a shopping mall environment. Clients are able to view many different types of art within walking distance from each other.” By the end of the year, Alserkal is set to double in size, with around 12 more warehouses due to open their doors in the area, adding to the creative diversity that characterises this cosmopolitan collection of galleries.

This variety has come to define the Dubai art scene as a whole, which has grown increasingly diverse over the years, both in terms of the artists represented and the preferences of local buyers. “All the art from across the region is represented in Dubai so anyone wishing to learn more about Middle Eastern art can discover its history and development, its key figures, and its rising stars by visiting the city. There are two great gallery districts and an internationally recognised art fair, as well as the largest auction for Middle Eastern art,” says Hisham Samawi, managing partner of Ayyam Gallery, which has branches in both DIFC and Alserkal Avenue. Ayyam Gallery started out as an art competition designed to discover and foster young artistic talent in Syria, where opportunities for art graduates were limited. Before long, this mandate was extended to cover artists from all over the region with bases in Dubai and Beirut. Supporting upcoming local talent is central to the work of many Dubai galleries as they join forces to promote Middle East art and attract the interest of the international community. “Dubai has definitely become the hub for Middle Eastern art on the international level. Anyone wishing to learn more about art from the region visits Dubai either during the art fair or during the art season. The art world is always interested in finding the next emerging market and Middle Eastern art is becoming what people are curious about and interested in,” adds Samawi. Capsule Arts, a Dubai-based art consultancy and purveyor of limited-edition prints, places particular emphasis on providing a platform for local artists. “A keystone of the business has always been fostering local artistic talent and helping artists to build sustainable art careers in the region,” says Deepa Bhatia, director and co-founder of Capsule Arts. The team works with both emerging and established artists living in the UAE and the wider GCC to develop quality prints of their work. “The print collection we launched addressed a real gap in the market for affordable but quality art, also giving artists a new platform to reach audiences and sell their work,” adds Bhatia, explaining that Capsule Arts also works with local artists for its consultancy projects. The desire to support home-grown talent is bolstered by demand for works with a UAE and Middle Eastern flavour. “We’ve found that UAE customers often respond to art prints that have some local relevance, such as Laober Zhu’s watercolours of Dubai or Khalid Mezaina’s drawings documenting the city’s neighbourhoods of Satwa, Karama and Deira,” says Bhatia. It is art spaces such as these that are sure to contribute to not only a vibrant local cultural community, but the region’s emergence as a formidable force on the international art scene.

SHOW BUSINESS ——— As the region’s definitive platform for presentations, industry talks and exclusive networking events, Fashion Forward has become much more than a catwalk showcase – it’s a style extravaganza

Boasting the very best in luxury shopping, Dubai is considered a haute haven for the global style set. And helping to drive forward the region’s fashion and design community is a growing host of events catering to this demand for contemporary fashion and trend-setting designs. Arguably generating the most buzz is the ever popular bi-annual Fashion Forward (FFWD) showcase. Returning to Madinat Jumeirah for its sixth season, the hotly anticipated four-day event will take place from October 22 to 25. Tempting fashionistas from near and far, Fashion Forward brings together a covetable collection

of seasonal offerings from region-based designers and those of Middle Eastern origin as they present their latest couture, ready-to-wear and accessories designs. Along with a thrilling dose of high calibre catwalk shows, visitors can expect debut launches and the chance to hear from industry insiders. Having first launched in April 2013, Fashion Forward has enjoyed five seasons of spectacular success. With a shared goal to ‘build a community where passion and purpose come together’, Lindsay Miller, managing director of Dubai Design District (d3), one of Fashion Forward’s main

partners, reveals the event “mirrors d3’s ambition to grow designers from this region into international brands.” In what is sure to be the most successful showcase yet, this season brings together a bevy of avant-garde designers including purveyor of intricate couture creations Amato, recent winners of the 2015 Regional Woolmark Prize, Taller Marmo, celebrated Emirati designer Madiyah Al Sharqi and a regular on Dubai’s style scene Dima Ayad. Concierge meets several key players who offer a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse at the city’s spectacular fashion event.

—— Brainchild of Bong Guerrero, Fashion Forward was conceived from the belief that the industry needed a platform to celebrate its talent. Immensely proud of the event’s continued success, Guerrero says: “Watching the event grow since April 2013 has been an incredible experience. I’ve seen our designers elevate their brands, grow in confidence and consistency in their work and, most importantly, sell to customers and stores worldwide. The success is undoubtedly down to the talent of our designers, their ability to create innovative collections each season and in doing so, attracting such an impressive array of industry professionals, buyers, stylists, media and social influencers to their shows.” 2

5

Commenting on Dubai’s ever-evolving fashion scene, Guerrero reveals: “If you look at what our country has achieved in its short life span, it becomes clear that the Middle East, and Dubai in particular, is at the forefront of innovation and progress in so many sectors; the fashion industry is no different. If you take Paris, Milan, London and New York, they have had decades to build and grow their fashion community. Although Dubai is still in its relative infancy, the industry is building and quickly gaining momentum. All the ingredients are here - the global interest, the regional fashion consciousness and most importantly the talent.” He adds: “Season six will bring together the best elements of seasons 1 to 5, our line-up of designers is the best yet with representatives from across the region showcasing Spring/Summer 2016 collections. We also have an exciting new concept for our accessories designers, which we can’t wait to unveil.”

—— No stranger to Dubai’s modeling scene, this exotic beauty of Indian descent was born and raised in the United Kingdom and has been gracing the city’s catwalks for over nine years. “Fashion Forward has helped to develop the industry in many ways. We see many more international models coming to Dubai, highlighting the fact that the industry is growing and developing, and meeting international standards on all fronts. It has helped many designers get regional recognition and venture into other markets.” Talking through the event’s casting process, Chudasama reveals: “First you have to meet the height and size requirements, then you will be allowed to cast which entails walking for a panel from Fashion Forward. Once cast, the first couple of days involve all day fittings during which the designers have you try on the clothes and make any alterations so the clothes fit perfectly for the show. During show days you are busy rehearsing and getting your hair and make-up done, which can change dramatically for every show. In the evenings (if your call time isn’t too early the next day) there are social events to attend filled with top individuals from the industry.” Revealing a soft spot for Filipino fashion designer Furne One, founder of Amato, Chudasama says: “In season 5, I was part of the haute couture group. All of the designers are amazing – but I have to say one of my all-time favourites is Amato by Furne One. He always brings a unique elegance and creativity to each season. His denim collection was stunning and something we haven’t seen from him before – he really was fashion forward with that collection.” 9

“I’ve been with Fashion Forward since its inception and was involved in all the initial planning. It’s actually the reason that I first joined Brag, (the events company that produces Fashion Foward) to bring this larger than life fashion event to the local and regional audience.” Khan, who manages all aspects of the event, from set up and construction to security, reveals planning is key to bring an event of this scale to life. “We have a very qualified team on board who know their skills and are very good at their jobs. We get very tight deadlines from the venue to complete production in time and so every minute counts for us. A sleepless 36 hours makes the event what it is. The core team comprises of 12 senior technical specialists assigned to various areas of the venue working right from set production, lights and sound, theming, safety, security and more. We have 120 security and protocol staff managing the event, plus about 150 crew members, including front and backstage, to ensure flawless operational flow of the event. “Backstage is the place that is the busiest, long before the show kicks-in. We have models having their hair and makeup done, the designers’ teams working on the pieces and getting them ready, designers themselves being interviewed, the backstage team preparing the models for rehearsals and so on. Overall it’s an action-packed rush of adrenalin right before the show starts.”

—— Designed with the ‘superwoman’ in mind, classical with a twist is the brand ethos behind Lebanese-born Dima Ayad’s eponymous label. It’s a philosophy that has garnered her plenty of loyal followers in a region that Ayad admires for its eclectic sense of style. “With over 150 nationalities that reside in this amazing country, its varied senses of style come from a range of ethnic backgrounds, yet somehow they all fit in and mesh well together. The abaya, the sari, the suited and booted, the party girl, the mom-on-the-go – it all works. “Shopping is at the core of Dubai’s success story and with that comes the desire and interest for the globe to see what local talent can contribute to that. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but with the success and growth of Fashion Forward and its designer portfolio, we’re on a good path to become incredible home-grown global fashion brands in the making.” Returning for her f ifth Fashion Forward season, Ayad enthuses that the event “is definitely

earmarked in everyone’s calendar.” Having grown up in Dubai, this season fashion fans expect to see Ayad’s affection for the emirate shine through her latest collection. “The inspiration stems from my love of a sun-kissed look and the desert. I’ve recently rediscovered a deep love for the desert, which I feel I have taken for granted having lived here so long. I was inspired a lot by shapes and I see structure in everything I look at, so that influence can be seen in abundance. Camel, gold, ivory and black hues dominate this season and silhouettes reflect the curves of a woman.” Visit: fashionforward.ae

SUCCESS STORY ——— As a brand new manufactory opens, so too does a fresh chapter for A. Lange & Söhne

On the southern edge of one of watchmaking’s most famous towns sits a gleaming centre dedicated to horology. Here in Glashütte, amid the clusters of historic buildings, stands the impressive new manufactory from A. Lange & Söhne. The sophisticated space is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of watchmakers, as they follow in the footsteps of the industry greats who first honed their craft in the town’s workshops centuries ago. The very first A. Lange & Söhne manufacture opened its doors in Glashütte in 1845, so it’s all the more fitting that the new manufactory opens here, as the company marks the 200th birthday of its founder. “The anniversary reminds us that there is no future without a past. Ferdinand Adolph Lange established the tradition of A. Lange & Söhne as a performance and innovation driven brand. With every launch of a technical innovation or a horological complication, the challenges and expectations are growing. This is what motivates and inspires us,” says Wilhelm Schmid, A. Lange & Söhne CEO. He adds: “At A. Lange & Söhne it is always about exploring new dimensions. After a construction period of three years, the new manufactory is now the next step in this process. If one looks at the intervals at which we have launched complications like the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar, the Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar Terraluna and the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater, it becomes quite clear why we needed a new, state-of-the-art production facility. We want to maintain this momentum.” The new manufactory, which opened last month, boasts a contemporary and eco-friendly design intended to foster the best working environment for the company’s talented artisans. Large

atelier windows allow light to flood in on modern watchmaking work stations, which have been set up in a virtually dust-free environment. Schmid says: “The new building is an extension of the manufactory. Next to our historic premises in Glashütte, we have created an additional production area of 5,400 square metres to give us more room to concentrate on perfecting our craftsmanship.” After opening the first Glashütte workshop in 1845, Dresden watchmaker, Ferdinand Adolph Lange ensured the future of the company he founded by passing on the mantle to future generations. Under his sons Richard and Emil, the firm went on to great heights. Their precision pocket watch from Saxony was exported across the world, much sought after for its high complications. However, the aftermath of World War II saw the company nationalised and, as a result, lost until 1990 when Ferdinand’s great-grandson Walter Lange relaunched the brand. From this re-emergence, the company has gone on to become one of the world’s most exclusive houses of horology, producing just a few thousand handmade pieces in gold and platinum each year. Specialists in complications, they include perpetual calendars, world-timers, tourbillons and minute repeaters. Among the successes to date is the Lange 1, with its distinctive outsize date and the Lange Zeitwerk, which boasts jumping numerals in a mechanical display to provide an alternative way to show hours and minutes with rotating hands. Schmid says: “Of course, the Lange 1 is an all-time classic. The brand icon and the other models of this watch family are a major driving force behind the success of our company. The Datograph and all further developments based on its technical achievements have

proven once and for all our competency in the field of premium quality chronographs. While, the Zeitwerk, with its jumping-numerals display and constant-force escapement has all the qualities of a landmark.” Describing the painstaking steps behind the creation of each remarkable piece, Schmid says: “Every A. Lange & Söhne watch has its origins in an idea. The objective of our product developers is to create timepieces that have never been made this way before. Right from the beginning, the movement designers work hand in hand with the product designers. Ultimately, the theoretical world of design interfaces with the real world. This is where the prototype makers take over. Their full-scale working models undergo a series of severe stress tests in the in-house testing laboratory before the new model is ready for series production. “After that, the next steps are the production and decoration of parts with the entire range of finishing techniques that are typical of the brand. This includes the hand-engraving of the balance cock. The double assembly is another Lange speciality to ensure superior quality. Some of our complications are so complex, that only a handful of specialised watchmakers are able to build them.” Establishing a new centre of excellence in timepiece design, the main focus of the Glashütte facility is to nurture the modern watchmaker. Schmid says: “The profession of watchmaking gives great opportunities to achieve personal fulfillment. Since 1997, the

Lange Watchmaking School provides training that meets the high standards demanded by the manufactory. On average, we accept 15 to 20 apprentices per year. After the three-year apprenticeship, most graduates will work at the Lange manufactory where they will be offered good career opportunities. “There is a wonderful and stimulating atmosphere in the workshops. The feeling there can be summarised in three words: serenity, dedication and concentration.” Looking towards a new era for A. Lange & Söhne, with its manufactory at its heart, watch aficionado Schmid adds: “In my life, I have had the good fortune to turn my hobbies into a career. I am a petrol head and I worked in the German automotive industry, and I am a watch collector who was given the chance to run one of the best watch brands in the world. I hope in future we will have ample opportunity to come up with exciting new ideas that keep the fascination for A. Lange & Söhne alive.”

AT THE BAZAAR ——— Souk Madinat Jumeirah is a plush modern venue with all the character of a traditional souk

Losing your way along the winding corridors of Souk Madinat Jumeirah is considered something of a rite of passage in Dubai. It’s one of those places where getting a little lost is all part of the experience, and at every turn there’s another shop front, restaurant or café waiting to be discovered. A contemporary take on traditional Arabia lends the space its unique character, and is one of the reasons the souk is the city’s most vibrant shopping and social spots. The souk is at the heart of a cluster of five-star hotels – Jumeirah Al Qasr, Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf and Jumeirah Mina A’Salam. Each brings its own f lavour and adds to the interconnected offering. This is one of the best places in the city to pick up souvenirs among a veritable treasure trove of charming traditional buys, from lanterns and silk scarves to beautiful Persian carpets. There’s also a host of international fashion brands such as Lulu Guinness and

Combining traditional Thai architecture with warm Arabian hospitality, Anantara Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa is a true urban retreat. Wholeheartedly embracing this eclectic mix of cultures, the hotel spa effortlessly applies ancient philosophies from across Asia alongside modern day practices. Sure to appeal to those searching for effective, non-surgical skin procedures, the Diamond Microdermabrasion aims to revive lacklustre skin. Using a minimally abrasive diamond head, the treatment gently eradicates the uneven outer layer of skin cells, thereby stimulating new growth and creating a more balanced complexion. Following summer’s intense heat, this hour-long treatment is brilliant for dry, dehydrated skin. The ultra-luxurious spa also features several other fantastic treatment facilities for visitors to explore, including the hammam suite, salt inhalation room, holistic cocoon and Ayurveda room. Many of the spa’s signature services can be enjoyed in the luxurious spa treatment villas or at the spa cabana on the beach.

Retreat from the surrounding bustle of Dubai Creek into the idyllic grounds of Amara Spa and discover a world of tranquillity. Nestled within the stunning confines of Park Hyatt Dubai, this spa pays tribute to ancient Moorish rituals and boasts décor that harks back to the allure of Arabian Nights. Harnessing the healing philosophies of precious jewels, the names of well-known gems act as a guide to the physical and spiritual benefits of each spa ritual. Sapphire represents treatments aimed at relaxation, Ruby explores the age-defying properties that encourage the restoration of youthful vitality, Emerald detoxifies and cleanses and Diamond therapies promote clarity and energy. Particularly popular is the indulgent two-hour Spirit of Arabia Ceremony, which looks to the revitalising benefits of rubies through deep exfoliation and a soothing massage of frankincense, amber, myrrh and sandalwood. The spa also features eight spacious suites each with their own outdoor terrace, lounge area and al fresco rain shower.

Perched on the 52nd floor of Sheraton Grand Hotel, Shine Spa boasts sleek, contemporary finishes and glorious panoramic views of the city. With a firm focus on result-driven skincare, the spa’s exclusive crystalinspired treatments have become particularly popular since launching earlier this year. Drawing on the energies of carnelian, rose quartz and green aventurine crystals, the Crystal Opulessence Facial has been designed to reveal the skin’s natural radiance by employing a warm and aromatic facial compression that serves to soften and exfoliate the skin. Another treatment that utilises the unique anti-ageing therapy of crystals is Shine Spa’s invigorating Crystalus Body Massage. Here, Australian gems and heated stones are used to alleviate tense muscles while the specially formulated Crystalus Body Oil, from chemical-free skincare brand Sodashi, prompts deep relaxation and serenity. Shine Spa also features 10 private treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite, along with an ice fountain and steam and sauna room.

Striking the perfect balance between European wellness and bold Eastern influences, Spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai offers a host of experiences guaranteed to delight discerning spa visitors. Among the standout treatments available, the Diamond Rose Body Ritual, which uses an exotic blend of damask rose and diamond dust, is ideal for those seeking to restore the skin’s luminosity. At this time a generous slick of Diamond Experience Rose Oil is used to reveal an enviably radiant glow. Another must-try is the spa’s rejuvenating Diamond Life Infusion Facial. Best suited to skin ages 35 and over, the targeted treatment uses natural magnetite to aid skin renewal and prolong the life span of skin cells. To further elevate your sensory experience, the spa houses a dedicated hammam area, luxurious relaxation lounges and indoor hot and cold plunge pools.

The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR) is one of the areas in the city that truly makes the most of Dubai’s pristine coastline. Running parallel to the Arabian Gulf, there’s an urban oasis feel to the place and, in the years since its 2008 debut, the area has undergone a considerable metamorphosis. It’s a lively yet relaxed space where fashion and interiors boutiques sit alongside a clutch of art stores. The Walk is also home to an excellent selection of hotels, restaurants, cafés and bars where some of the best sweeping Gulf views can be found. Pure Sky Lounge & Dining at Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Resort is a sophisticated spot where drinks and tasty fare are served alongside the outstanding panoramas. It’s the ideal place to sit back and relax with a cocktail while watching the sun set over the ocean. For a delicious dinner, a trip to The Ritz Carlton Dubai is a must, where pan Asian restaurant Blue Jade presents a culinary journey through the East. Elsewhere, fine French dining comes courtesy of Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach at Plantation restaurant which transports diners to a traditional French kitchen. The menu here introduces the cassolette dining concept which sees dishes slow-cooked in cast iron cassolette pots to tease out the flavours. One of the most significant moments in the area’s evolution was the opening of The Beach in early 2014. Sitting opposite JBR, and running the length of the white sand JBR beach, the treelined esplanade is peppered with international stores, boutique shopping and eateries from all corners of the globe. There’s also an indoor and outdoor cinema, children’s play areas, green spaces and plush cabanas on the shore. Fast becoming one of the city’s coolest hangouts, a lively programme of events from farmer’s markets and art shows, to early morning yoga on the beach draw crowds. The Dubai Tram route is just minutes away from this lively part of town, meaning it’s even easier to spend the day exploring. 8

DUBAI BY DESIGN ——— The arrival of Dubai Design Week this month promises to bring a wealth of talent to town

Dubai’s design scene has in recent years undergone an interesting evolution. While the focus has very much been on the development of the city’s mainstream art community, in the background, a vibrant design hub has been emerging. It started with initiatives like Design Days Dubai in 2012 and Downtown Design the following year, and has reached its apex this year with the opening of Dubai Design District (d3) and this month’s debut of Dubai Design Week (DDW). Joining cities around the world where prestigious design weeks are held, Dubai’s design community is boldly stepping into the limelight.

“The establishment of Dubai Design Week represents a key milestone in the emirate’s journey towards achieving global recognition as a leading design hub. Dubai Design Week will be an important platform for our design communities, providing an intelligently curated and inspirational environment where creative minds can come together to learn, collaborate and innovate,” says Dr Amina Al Rustamani, chairperson of Dubai Design and Fashion Council. Dubai Design Week was established by Art Dubai Group, which also oversees Downtown Design, meaning both events will run hand-inhand. Throughout the week, from October 26 to 31, a lively programme is set to unfold which encompasses culture, education and entertainment. The entire city will be involved, although at the very heart of design week is d3. The creative space, at Business Bay, opened its doors earlier this year, and since then, has welcomed talented designers and artists across myriad genres, from all over the world. The event itself will have a distinctly multidisciplinary approach, bringing together graphic and product design, architecture and industrial design – to name a few. A series of talks, lectures and workshops will support the activities and exhibitions, while a collection of brand new installations

4

from renowned local and international designers will be placed at landmark locations around the city. One of the local designers set to shine during design week is Aljoud Lootah. Based in Dubai, Lootah’s multi-disciplinary work contrasts form and function across a variety of products and bespoke gifts. The Emirati artist mixes traditional silhouettes with modern touches to craft each piece, while the use of patterns, folds and geometric shapes draws on a rich array of influences. “My inspirations vary, from travel, to manipulating shapes, to inspiration from objects found in everyday life. I find the Emirati culture and heritage immensely inspiring with all its details, patterns and mix of materials,” says Lootah. Lootah successfully incorporates aspects of the region’s history and traditions into her work which gives it an interesting edge. She says: “The elements that are found in Emirati crafts are a true inspiration. Craftsmanship was a major source of income for our ancestors and it’s deeply rooted in our heritage. It reflected the essence of social values at that time and the deep bond between local people and their surrounding environments. Despite the lack of resources, people managed to invent tools to help them withstand the harsh living conditions and these crafts added aesthetic touches to their

6

7

daily lives. They solved problems. I try to include certain aspects of that in my designs.” Another source of inspiration for the designer has been the role of women in local society. “It is the vision, drive and support in the UAE that influences me. Women in the UAE have always been at the forefront, whether it is heading universities, driving trucks or owning multiple businesses from their home. “It shows me that ambition and passion will not be oppressed or pushed aside, and I am grateful for the support system I have. It pushes me to succeed and gives me a feeling that nothing can hold me back. I am proud to be the first generation of the designers to establish themselves in Dubai and look forward to seeing what the future holds for us.” Having majored in graphic design, Lootah established her brand shortly after graduation, and in 2014, made the shift towards furniture pieces and product design. “My pieces are a combination of a modern aesthetic mixed with traditional silhouettes. I currently work from a small studio at home, and often start my designing process by working on a mind-map or brainstorm of what I would like to achieve. With that listed, I have a better understanding of the running theme, and a vague idea about

the general aesthetics of the products. I then start sketching and creating models from matchsticks or clay. At that point the modifications occur, and that’s when I work on the technical drawings.” Set to showcase her pieces during Dubai Design Week, Lootah says: “I am looking forward to seeing how the whole city will be transformed into a design hub. This will greatly raise awareness about design and will shed so much light on the importance of it. I will be participating with an installation that is inspired by elements from the sea and traditional Emirati fishing.” Running alongside Dubai Design Week is the third edition of Downtown Design, from October 27 to 30. Held at d3, the event is the region’s platform for trade professionals to discover original design from all over the world. An impressive roster of established and emerging brands is set to take part, across a range of categories from furniture and lighting, to kitchens and textiles. One participant, with a strong connection to local crafts of the region, is Illulian. The Italian firm’s beautiful hand-made carpets are set to be a major Downtown Design talking point. Founded in Italy in 1960 by Massoud Illulian, the company is now run by Shahnaz Illulian and her sons Davis and Bendis Ronchetti Illulian. Since

the firm was founded, it has provided carpets for the homes and businesses of prestigious clientele from Dubai and Milan, to New York. “Our carpets, which only use 100 percent Himalayan wool or pure silk, can be found in some of the most exclusive residencies all over the world. We have provided carpets for the Presidential palace of Kazakhstan, The St. Regis Hotel in downtown Florence and in many residential buildings in Milan. We have also collaborated with architects and clients who are based throughout the Middle East,” says Bendis. “This is the first time that Illulian has had the honour of taking part in Downtown Design. Given our long history of collaboration and work done in Dubai, we thought it was time to participate in such an important design event in a city that we hold so dear,” he adds. The brothers plan to showcase a breadth of the creations the company has to offer, such as the pieces pictured above, during Downtown Design. Davis says: “At Illulian we pride ourselves in always being up to date with the latest trends, and we find inspiration from everything that surrounds us, our encounters and our travels around the world. This is one of the reasons we are particularly looking forward to Downtown Design.”

Nurturing talent is at the heart of Dubai Design Week and one of its initiatives, Abwab, offers talented emergent designers the chance to have their work showcased at individual pavilions. Made from locally sourced materials, the pavilions will be integrated into the walkways and open spaces at d3, with countries taking part including Kuwait, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Dubai-based Möbius Design Studio are curators of the UAE pavilion for the inaugural event. “We’re thrilled to be part of the first Dubai Design Week as curators of the UAE Pavilion. This is especially exciting since we believe design is relatively young in the region. While this may, at times, seem to be a disadvantage, it is also quite liberating; it allows for a fertile ground for exploration. “This is how we look at Abwab specifically. It is about opening doors of opportunity for those who want to engage. It is also a chance to reach out to

the curious; an invitation to experience what design could be about. The prospect of such exchange excites us enormously,” says Möbius co-founder Hadeyeh Badri. Founded in 2010, Möbius is run by Badri, Hala Al-Ani and Riem Ibrahim – friends who met while studying at the American University of Sharjah. “If we had to summarise our objective in taking part in this year’s Abwab, it would be to start a dialogue, a conversation, to answer some questions, and to raise many many others,” says Ibrahim. Al-Ani adds: “We are currently focused on print based projects. When it comes to research, our explorations encompass, but are not limited to, photography, installations and kinetic typography. We started Möbius as we hoped to have some impact on the design practice in Dubai. Möbius is, for us, a playground where we explore our curiosities and we want to share that with others.”

KHALID SHAFAR ———

The celebrated Emirati designer reveals his thoughts and aspirations for this month’s Dubai Design Week

It was 7am on a Ramadan morning, a very quiet time in the city, as I head towards the INDEX towers to meet Ben Floyd, CEO of A r t Dubai Group, t he organisation behind Dubai Design Week. I spent over an hour chatting with him about the recently announced Dubai Design Week. An hour that allowed me to understand the thought and preparation behind the forthcoming event. This hour was essential to discuss, debate and subsequently justify in my mind what design week is all about. Many questions had been floating in my mind: are we, is Dubai, ready for a design week and if not when would we be? Do we need to be ready to have a design week or is the setting up of a design week a reason for us to become ready and to propel us forward? Despite these questions, I never questioned its relevance. So, what is the importance of a design week? I have been attending Milan Design Week (Salone del Mobile) for the past few years and have witnessed how such a week opens tremendous doors for participants and visitors alike from all creative sectors. You don’t need to participate physically to have those doors opened, but you need to attend. It’s a platform created to celebrate, exchange,

create opportunities, debate, showcase and emerge. Dubai Design Week is no different – a new platform for an emerging design industry, I believe the team behind Dubai Design Week has captured this well. And here we are now, with the f irst edition of Dubai Design Week ahead of us, from October 26 th to 31st . The line up of events, exhibitions and programming that has been put together celebrates all design has to offer, with the focus centred at the heart of Dubai Design District (d3) but intending to mobilise the city as a whole. For this week, a group of good friends and pioneering designers from different creative disciplines including, and led by myself, will introduce a new flavour. Far away in the heart of industrial Ras Al Khor, at my showcase space KASA and its surrounds, we are inviting people to enjoy our group presentation. It’s a thematic presentation that will address a milestone and a key environmental platform in the landscape of Dubai’s geography. Each person, in his or her discipline, will present a project exploring this theme and questioning its existence. From architecture and product design, to fashion, jewellery, food and taste, the creative movement will contribute to the

“MANY QUESTIONS HAD BEEN FLOATING IN MY MIND: ARE WE, IS DUBAI, READY FOR A DESIGN WEEK AND IF NOT WHEN WOUL D WE BE?” richness of Dubai Design Week and bring the design curious to Ras Al Khor. As is the case with all design weeks around the globe, it’s a citywide initiative rather than focused on one location. We want to spread the word and the reach of design across the city of Dubai and beyond. It’s our mission, as pioneering designers in our own fields, to lead this journey across our nation and encourage more to join forces. I am confident and optimistic about how the infrastructure and set up for a design industry is being laid across the city and for a design community that will evolve over time. That said, the tendency to shift career to become a designer is growing at a feverous rate and has become an overnight dream for some; as a consequence the global design population suffers. Will initiatives such as Dubai Design Week help to preserve and maintain the industry? I look forward to finding out…

“I LOVE COMING TO THE STUDIO AND PAINTING. I’M BRAND NEW TO THIS AND IT’S WONDERFUL TO LEARN SOMETHING DIFFERENT EVERY DAY”

I’ve started my second career here, and I will always have my main studio in Dubai. It’s great to be part of this art scene and to watch it grow. During the last 11 years, everything has gone through this sort of embryonic growth and it really has now turned into a serious art environment

“I was five years old when I started art school. At that age, it was largely about play, but it put me on the path. I loved art and anything related to it,” says architect-turned-artist Michael Arnold. This early introduction was to become a lifelong passion as the creative spark carried on into a career spanning four decades. “I continued to paint all through school and in college while I was training to be an architect. I loved every minute of my architecture career, the problem was it never allowed me time to pick up a paintbrush,” he reflects. “I was a very old-fashioned architect and I did everything by hand. When computers were introduced everyone had one except me. I did everything in front of the client by sketching by hand. I always kept that, but never turned it into artwork.” Arnold quickly rose from office boy at an architectural firm to its president and CEO. Eleven years ago, his work brought

CONC_DXB_OCT15_EXPERIENCE_PHOTOESSAY_Michael Arnold_v2_AT.indd 77

him from his native Philadelphia to Dubai, designing buildings across the Middle East. But it wasn’t until he sold the firm, that the opportunity arose for a return to his first passion. “I finally had the chance to take time to focus on my art. I love coming to the studio and painting. I’m brand new to this and it’s wonderful to learn something different every day,” he says. At his studio, nestled among the windtowers of Dubai’s oldest quarter, Arnold’s thrill at being able to explore his creative side is clear. Every inch of the space is filled with paintings, sketches and photographs in this nook in the heart of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. A glance around reveals inspirations which have shaped his work, particularly some of the UAE’s most wellknown structures such as Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. “I think that mosque is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.

20/09/2015 13:00

I was trained in a realist style called alla prima, which means first mark. It means you don’t have to work on a painting for 30 days, waiting for each part to dry. I love the style because it means that you can see all of the brush strokes

“The detailing, design and everything about Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is just incredible. It’s a building I visit often; it’s of a standard you just don’t see that often. I also enjoy the architectural elements in the souks and, in particular, the different types of Islamic architectural details, specifically Moroccan arches used in some of the region’s landmark structures.” Another inspiration is British watercolourist Trevor Waugh, a mentor who coached Arnold at his studio in England for six months. But perhaps the most significant moment in Arnold’s art career so far came when he discovered monoprinting and with it, a signature. “I learned the basic monoprint technique from Lynette Ten Krooden, a South African artist. I started to experiment on my own. The idea is that you roll oil paint on to a plate of glass, place paper on top, take a pencil and then sketch over the sandwiched paint and paper. After completing the sketch, I go back over the paper layer and make impressions where I want to emphasize strong contrast between light and dark. I use a lot of different tools for that stage, from forks and spoons to my thumb and a roller pin.

“When I peel the paper off the glass, you have what is called the positive print. I then lay another sheet of paper on top of the oiled, painted and etched glass surface, use a roller to transfer the remaining paint onto the second sheet to create the negative print. When my wife saw the first one I ever did, she asked for a much bigger monoprint, so instead of a small print from a small piece of glass, I bought a large mirror and a long roll of printing paper, and went through the same process. That was my first large monoprint, of the textile souk. I finished and thought to myself, this works.” In the process of cleaning up, a practical solution turned into an artistic answer, adding an entirely new dimension. Arnold explains: “It took hours to clean the oiled glass. Searching for an alternative to painting directly onto it, I decided to use heavy duty foil, placing it on top of the glass and spreading the paint on top of the foil, which I call the plate. My plan was to throw the foil away when I was done. But I took a corner, and was about to rip up the foil, when I looked at the reflection, started walking around it, and thought, I’m not sure I should be throwing this out. What started

It takes four or five hours to get the foil set, to get everything ready. I use oil paint because I don’t have to be in a rush to get things done, if my sketch takes two hours that’s fine because oil paint stays wet for a couple of days. I’ll then come back the following day and spend about eight hours all the way through to get each layer

The centre, Mawaheb, is the reason I stumbled upon my gallery, I went in looking for a studio space and I found it from there. The students pop into my studio throughout the day and I love it

out as a time saver, ended up becoming a fourth version, so now you have the sketch, the positive, the negative, and the foil. The gold leaf was something introduced because I felt like I needed something to add reflected highlights.” The work caught the eye of Showcase Gallery owner Sharon Harvey who offered an exhibition in September last year. Arnold says: “When Sharon asked if I’d like a solo exhibition I was ecstatic. I had all my watercolours, oil paintings and one monoprint displayed in my studio, but she wanted the show to be nothing but monoprints. That really threw me into focusing on the monoprints, and I am eternally grateful to her.” The exhibition was a huge success and as a result, a second show titled From The Architecture of Art to The Art of Perspective will be held from October 14 to November 12 at Showcase Gallery in Alserkal Avenue. Arnold says: “The country and the gallerists here have given me an incredible opportunity and as a result, my work is linked to the architectural and cultural aspects of the region. I hope I am able to continue doing what I love, to create pieces of art.”

LITTLE WONDER ——— Dubai Creek’s bustling banks have long been at the very heart of the city’s story

At any time of day there’s a lively scene unfolding on the banks of Dubai Creek. Dhow boats are loaded with all manner of wares bound for near and far as the waterfront throngs with activity. It’s this very enterprise that saw a humble fishing port grow into the fast-paced metropolis it is today, and offers a fascinating insight into the emirate’s trading and fishing past. At the heart of it all is Dubai Creek,

an historic waterway that bridges the past and present. From its waters, some of the city’s oldest buildings create a unique backdrop while in the distance, the futuristic cityscape can be seen. In this photograph, the tilt-shift technique, gives the impression that the scene is in miniature, with an extremely shallow depth of field. The result is an emphasis on the creek’s dhow trade – a fundamental part of life in the emirate.

PUTTI NG ON THE RITZ ——— At The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre, executive chef Ron Pietruszka is the man responsible for some of the city’s finest restaurants

Over the last decade, the dining scene in Dubai has undergone an evolution that has been simply incredible. Cuisines from all over the world can be found here, set against a backdrop where everything from five-star to food trucks present a whole new culinary world to explore. The challenge for the city’s chefs is to keep their offering enticing, in order to stand out. Ron Pietruszka at The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre is leading that charge. “I was lucky enough to find something I’m naturally good at and enjoy doing. My original plan was a career in science or psychology, which I was studying at college near Chicago, but while cooking to get myself through school I discovered that I truly looked forward to getting into the kitchen every day. After my first position at The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago, I was hooked. I had found my passion and the rest is history. I’ve now been with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel company for almost 12 years,” says Pietruszka. In 2010, while working at The Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Krabi, Thailand, Pietruszka was offered the chance to come and work in Dubai. “For me, the answer was not a matter of yes or no, but of how soon can I come? I am the executive chef, so first and foremost, I manage a large team of wonderful chefs. My other main role is to oversee and ensure the quality of all food throughout the hotel,” says Pietruszka. The roster of restaurants under the chef’s wing includes Café Belge which is inspired by 1920’s Belgium, Center Cut steak house, international buffet restaurant Cara, and Cake patisserie and café. There’s also The Sunken Garden for drinks and light snacks, and The Lobby Lounge where a sumptuous afternoon tea is served. Pietruszka says: “I have overall responsibility for all of the restaurants in the hotel, but have a very talented chef de cuisine heading up each one. My main role is really to oversee the food quality and menus, but it is my chefs who are the culinary craftsmen actually creating the dishes and cooking the food. “We have worked hard to ensure that each restaurant has its own individual identity, so each dining experience should be very different. What you

will experience in each outlet however is the freshest ingredients, highest levels of personalised service and a memorable experience, from beer and food pairings in Café Belge, to a slice of the famous Ritz-Carlton Cake in Cake patisserie and café. “Wherever possible we work with local suppliers, including many new farms that are springing up across the UAE. Beyond this, being in Dubai we are quite spoilt with easy access to products in the northern and southern hemispheres. We source ingredients from across Europe, Asia and Australia to ensure we are able to find the best ingredients.” Some of the chef’s own favourite dishes from the property’s restaurants include whole roasted Dover sole with chickpea frites, tomato relish and grey shrimp from Café Belge, and fresh crab cake served with corn veloute and organic rocket salad from Center Cut. He adds: “The Ritz-Carlton Cake, which we serve in our patisserie and café, has a wonderful story behind it. It is the result of a global contest that saw 23 Ritz-Carlton chefs compete to create the ultimate cake to represent the history of the hotel. The result; a decadent chocolate cake with Valrhona Coeur de Guanaja chocolate sponge, and Valrhona Caraibe ganache infused with candied orange peel and Grand Marnier.” Looking to the future for restaurants at The Ritz-Carlton, and dining in Dubai, Pietruszka says: “I would like to continue to expand our restaurant offering as a hotel with new openings, and we have some exciting new projects in the pipeline for 2016. At the same time, we will continue to develop our existing outlets, with a focus on innovation, staying true to our concepts, and creating memorable experiences that will bring our customers back time and time again. “The Dubai dining scene never ceases to amaze me as it is continually growing and evolving, and I find it incredibly exciting that this is showing no sign of slowing down. I also think the diversity of cuisine will continue to increase as we continue to welcome visitors and residents from even more nationalities from across the globe.”

—— As the signature restaurant of prominent Thai hotel brand Dusit Thani, expectations at Benjarong are understandably high. Fortunately, this charming venue delivers on all counts and is generally considered by the city’s gourmands to be the real deal as far as Thai cooking is concerned. Upon entering, immediately your eyes are drawn to the ornate décor, resembling the dining halls of King Rama IV, and the warm contrast of gold and royal blue hues. The serene atmosphere, attentive staff and soothing musical sounds are the perfect accompaniment to the traditional Thai offerings that fill the menu. The award-winning culinary team ensures there’s plenty to pique the interest. Alongside old favourites, several of the chef’s speciality dishes exhibit the restaurant’s passion for fine dining Thai style. Feast upon Phad Kee Mao Po Taek which consists of stir-fried prawns, calamari, muscles, fish with lemongrass and, chilli and sweet basil leaves, or try the Goong Mungkorn Benjarong which is a stir-fried battered lobster with roasted chilli paste, red onion, bell pepper and sweet basil leaves. For a refreshing end to the meal, the delicious Khao Neaw Mamuang sticky rice with pandan and mango never fails to impress.

Located in luxury beachfront hotel The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort, Spice Emporium often graces the list of the city’s must-try Thai restaurants. Boasting spacious, vibrantly decorated interiors and a bustling open kitchen, the restaurant was designed to recreate the much-loved lively spirit of Thailand. Diners are treated to an incredible choice of dishes, including classics like Pad Thai, Tom Yam Goong and Pla Somlee Tod Num Pla Yam Ma Muang – whole deep fried halwayo with fish sauce and mango salad. For those with a more adventurous palate, the Ho Mok Taley, steamed mixed seafood soufflé topped with coconut milk and served in a banana leaf is certainly not one to pass up on. Revel in the restaurant’s festive atmosphere every Monday as Spice Emporium hosts its Bangkok Night Market on the terrace. Championing the vibrant sights and sounds of the Thai capital’s famed street vendors, live outdoor cooking stations here present a spectacular array of Thai dishes, while the classical Thai dancers provide the evening’s entertainment.

An undeniable gem among The Palace Downtown Dubai’s impressive dining portfolio, Thiptara combines stellar location and scrumptious cuisine for an all-together unforgettable evening. Living up to its literal translation of ‘magic on the water’, Thiptara’s setting instantly captivates. While the interiors deliver a plush dining experience, the al fresco terrace, which extends into Burj Lake, provides a ringside seat at one of city’s main attractions, the dancing water show of The Dubai Fountain. Fortunately for lovers of fine Thai fare, the dishes aren’t overshadowed by the dramatic location. Chef de Cuisine Chaiwat Kawikitpraphat has sought to expand on his knowledge of family recipes with his own fusion of Bangkok influences. Tuck into his signature dishes that include Phad Char Hoy Shell, a dish of spicy sautéed scallops with Thai herbs and oyster sauce, Thod Maan Poo Thai deep fried crab cakes, and Pla Yang Nam Ma Kham which is grilled black cod with tamarind sauce and crispy onions. With so many delicious options to choose from the sharing menu is a great way to sample some of the restaurant’s best-loved dishes.

With its picturesque views and lush waterside location, Pai Thai has deservedly earned its reputation as one of the city’s most romantic restaurants. An arrival by abra, along Al Qasr’s stunning waterways, and a cosy table on the warmly lit terrace are just a few of the well thought out touches that help set the mood. On par with its exceptional surrounds, is Pai Thai’s exciting choice of dishes. From the fiery papaya salad and scrumptious breaded prawn cakes to sundried crispy beef and plump purple flower chicken dumpling, the starters alone are enough to sate those with a craving for credible Thai food. Seafood lovers are in for a treat as the Chu Chee Pla, creamy red curry with deep fried Dory fish, Pla Nung Ma Now, steamed sea bass with garlic, chili and lime, and Pananag Kung Mang Gorn, Atlantic lobster with lychee and creamy coconut are all standout choices. Taking a more contemporary approach to desserts, try the Pandan crème brûlée or creamy Mango Panacota topped with fresh tropical fruit.

SOUVENIR SHOPPING Concierge recommends the best gift items this side of Arabia

—— CALLIGRAPHY AT SOUK KHAN MURJAN

If you’re hunting for the perfect gift or a souvenir to take back home, an exquisite piece of Arabic calligraphy is the perfect choice and involves script written in decorative handwriting. We recommend visiting master calligrapher Amir Hossein Golshani’s boutique, Golden Pen, which is located in the Khan Murjan souk at Wafi mall. The boutique boasts an array of charming artwork so you can pick up ready-made pieces but, if you have the time, customise a design for a bespoke reminder of your time in the city. Khan Murjan is open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: wafi.com/souk

We love shopping for colourful pashmina scarves at Souk Madinat Jumeirah. If you’re nervous about quality and authenticity, this plush modern souk is one of the best places to visit in Dubai. There are a number of retailers here including Al Jaber Gallery and Pride of Kashmir where the staff are knowledgeable when it comes to the quality and craftsmanship of handwoven pieces. The name pashmina originates from the Persian word meaning ‘made from wool’ and the wool is derived from the pashmina goat indigenous to the Himalayas in India, Nepal and Pakistan. Stores open daily from 10am until 11pm. Visit: jumeirah.com ARTISTIC POEMS AT SOUK KHAN MURJAN

Motivated by his love of Persian poetry, Iranian artist Abbas Saberi crafts exceptional storytelling art at his Swan Palace workshop in Dubai’s Souk Khan Murjan. Combining multiple techniques, he painstakingly creates extraordinary scenes that are embossed, engraved, painted on copper and aluminium sheets, and then embellished with semiprecious gems. Swan Palace is open from 10am to 10pm Sunday to Wednesday, 10am to midnight Thursday to Saturday. Visit: wafi.com/souk

Twenty years after opening its first store in the gold souk in 1959, Damas has become one of the region’s biggest jewellery brands. INTO THE DUNES An unforgettable adventure awaits in the UAE’s majestic desert

—— DRIVE TIME

No experience of Dubai is complete without heading out into the desert and making the most of its dramatic dunes. We love a spot of dune bashing, which is something of a pastime among the locals. With an expert guide at the wheel, try the highoctane experience for yourself as you career over the dunes in your choice of vehicle. Whether you’re in a dune buggy or 4x4 it’s just as exhilarating as you climb the giant orange peaks and roar down the sands. A host of tour operators are primed and ready to take you out among the dunes, and Arabian Adventures is one of the most popular. Visit: arabian-adventures.com FROM THE AIR

One of the best ways to see all the UAE has to offer is from the air, and we love nothing more than taking a trip with Helidubai. Hop into one of their luxurious helicopters and see the desert in style. Helidubai offer a selection of tour packages, but you can also customise your own aerial adventure over the dunes. With pick ups from Dubai Marina and Dubai Festival City, you’ll be whisked away from the busy city and out into the heart of the desert in minutes. Visit: helidubai.com

SKY HIGH

The Dubai desert is vast and one of the best ways to truly appreciate its scale is from above. A flight with Balloon Adventures is a wonderful way to take it all in. The trip starts early in the morning, before sunrise, to ensure you are soaring high over the dunes just as the sun comes up. It’s one of the best experiences to be had during a visit to the emirate and is a chance to see some desert wildlife, as well as some stunning views. Don’t forget to take your camera as the panoramas, especially as the sun comes up and the light changes over the desert, are incredible. Visit: ballooning.ae

One of the most luxurious ways to experience the desert is on a premium excursion with Platinum Heritage. We love their tours as they offer a truly special touch, in some of the most beautiful stretches of the Dubai desert. There’s a fantastic selection of experiences to choose from, but The Platinum Heritage Night Safari is one of the best. The tour starts with a pick up from your hotel before heading out to the pristine private Conservation Reserve. After a transfer to an open-roofed vintage land rover, you’re in for a treat as you ride over the dunes. Creatures of the night are out roaming as you take a ride through the desert landscape, so be on the look out for wildlife such as Arabian gazelles and oryx, with the help of head lamps and hi-tech night-vision binoculars. Hear stories about Dubai’s Bedouin heritage and learn about the local plant life from your knowledgeable guide. After the nature drive, relax at an exclusive open-air Bedouin-inspired camp with a light snack in the cool night air. Visit: platinum-heritage.com

DUBAI CREEK GOLF & YACHT CLUB

EMIRATES GOLF CLUB

Get in the swing of things with our guide to the city’s best golf clubs

Also on the banks of the creek, and a major feature on the skyline here, is Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. The par-71 course, which measures 6,967 yards, is a memorable journey from the first tee to the 18th green. The superbly manicured fairways are lined with date palms and coconut trees, and are a pleasure to play. There are also attractive water hazards and shrubbery throughout, which all lend a tropical air to the undulating course. Famed for its striking design, the Clubhouse here is itself a talking point. It was created to mirror the sails of the traditional Arab dhow, and is one of the city’s most photographed landmarks, so make sure you have your camera with you to capture its extraordinary angles. Visit: dubaigolf.com

One of the city’s most famous courses, this is where golfers can follow in the footsteps of some of the sport’s greats. With its 36 holes of world-class golf, Emirates Golf Club has been at the forefront of golf in the Middle East since opening in 1988. The host course for the Dubai Desert Classic; one of the biggest events on the European Tour, it sports two of the city’s finest must-play courses, the Majlis and the Faldo Course. Large, fast greens are a hallmark and the slick putting surfaces present enticing challenges for experienced golfers. Home to everything from award-winning fine dining at French restaurant Le Classique to bar bites at Spike Bar, Emirates Golf Club is a fantastic golfing venue. Visit: dubaigolf.com

—— AL BADIA GOLF CLUB BY INTERCONTINENTAL

One of the things we love most about this venue is its location, perched on the edge of Dubai Creek. As a result, Al Badia’s 18-hole championship golf course offers excellent views. As well as the par-72 course, there’s also an award-winning clubhouse, four stunning restaurants, event spaces and a luxurious spa - meaning there’s something for the avid golfer, as well as those just looking for a relaxing day out. The course itself is pretty special with lush fairways, lakes, extensive water features and an abundance of indigenous plant life. Visit: albadiagolfclub.ae

ARABIAN INDULGENCE Plan a pampering session with our guide to the city’s luxurious hammams

—— TALISE OTTOMAN SPA

This is without doubt one of our favourite spas and its elaborate Turkish Hammam is a sight to behold. Built from precious marble and decorated with dark woods and mosaic, it’s a regal and welcoming space at the plush Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. Look out for the Royal Ottoman Hammam experience. Gentle heat from the warm stone hammam bed softens skin and relaxes muscles, as a trained therapist exfoliates skin using an authentic kese mitt. A relaxing foam massage follows, using handmade olive soap, which boosts skin health. Contact: 04 4530456

ORIENTAL HAMMAM

RIXOS ROYAL SPA

SARAY SPA

Step into an Arabian oasis at One&Only Royal Mirage where the Oriental Hammam is bound to amaze. The Royal Hammam Ritual is a standout. The ritual starts with a full body exfoliation using a traditional kese mitt, followed by a nourishing body wrap using marine mud, algae or an Ayurvedic oshadi blend to promote skin rejuvenation and health. We especially loved being cocooned in the body wrap, as the therapist gives a wonderful pressure-point head massage to finish the treatment. Contact: 04 3999999

Take a trip to ancient Turkey with a soothing spa experience for the senses at Rixos The Palm Dubai. The Rixos Royal Spa’s Turkish Hammam is a real treat and adopts the traditional Ottoman-inspired approach. There are several hammam treatment rooms in the spa that each feature one or two warm marble slabs. Lie down on the warm stone beds, and drift away with a deep skin exfoliation before a soap massage cleanses the body. We think this is the perfect rejuvenating way to spend a day. Contact: 04 4575415

Following in the tradition of the Caravanserai, where weary travellers of the past took shelter and enjoyed the warmth of Arabic hospitality to refresh and unwind, Saray Spa at Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel & Suites features a variety of rituals that aim to do the same. The Saray Hammam is a particular highlight, using traditional healing techniques. Enjoy the warmth of the spa’s steam room before switching off from the world in one of the spa’s treatment rooms. The ritual ends with a body massage using sandalwood oil. Contact: 04 3194630

JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

ROYAL HOUSE

DUBAI MUSEUM

Concierge recommends the city’s most iconic cultural attractions

Sharing the eastern edge of Dubai Creek with Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is the atmospheric Al Shindagha area where the ruling Al Maktoum family once lived. One of the most important buildings in this area is Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House and we’ve spent many an afternoon in this tranquil space. Now open as a museum, this elegant home was the original residence of the ruling family and the former seat of government in Dubai. The building offers insights into life in the pre-oil era with a fascinating series of photographs of 1940s and 1950s Dubai, coins, stamps and even a quaint pearl diving display. And here’s a little trivia for you – the structure dates back to 1896 and was the home of Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, the grandfather of current Dubai ruler HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The museum is open Saturday to Thursday 8am to 8.30pm, Friday 3pm to 10pm.

One of the oldest buildings in Dubai is the striking Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1799 to defend against attacks from the sea. Today it is the home of Dubai Museum, where you can go on a journey through the emirate’s rich history with engaging displays and prized artefacts. The museum is open Saturday to Thursday 8.30am to 7.30pm, Friday 2pm to 7.30pm. Visit: dubaiculture.gov.ae

—— HISTORIC DISTRICT

The city’s oldest quarter and perhaps its most intriguing, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood stretches from the banks of Dubai Creek. We love its winding passageways and striking wind-tower architecture. You’ll find an eclectic selection of cafés, museums and art spaces here. DUBAI CREEK

Step back in time at Dubai Creek where the city’s story began. The waterway once bustled with traditional boats plying their trade – a scene which continues today. Water taxis known as abras carry passengers across the creek and it’s a wonderful way to take in the space.

HERITAGE BY THE CREEK

Travel back in time at Heritage and Diving Village by Dubai Creek. The space takes you back in time through a series of elaborate reconstructions. We recommend you stop by the traditional Arabic coffee house to sample the local fare and pick up Bedouin handicrafts at the small souk. Open Sunday to Thursday, 8am to 10pm, Friday 8am to 11am and 4pm to 10pm. Contact: 04 3937151

MASTER CHEFS

INDEGO BY VINEET

STAY BY YANNICK ALLÉNO

Don’t leave Dubai without trying one of these sensational celebrity dining experiences

Vineet Bhatia made local history when he opened Indego by Vineet in Dubai, the first fine-dining Indian restaurant in a five-star hotel in the UAE. It’s easy to see why, as the restaurant has in many ways set the benchmark for top-quality Indian cuisine in the city. We love the cutting-edge innovations here, and the 10-spoon taster platter is a Concierge favourite. Open daily 7pm to midnight. Contact: 04 3998888

Alléno’s first glimpse into the world of cooking came while watching his grandmother in the kitchen. From humble beginnings, the chef has become one of the world’s finest. STAY features one of our favourite concepts in the city: a sumptuous pastry library where you can choose from an exceptional dessert selection. Open Tuesday to Sunday 7pm to 11pm, closed Monday. Contact: 04 4401010

REFLETS PAR PIERRE GAGNAIRE

For a taste of the best British fare in Dubai, look no further than Marco Pierre White Grill. The lively restaurant boasts a warm ambience, as well as an open kitchen so you can watch all the action right from your table. This is the place for fine British fare. We love the signature fish and chips, with triple-cooked chips and minted mushy peas. Open daily from 7pm to midnight. Contact: 04 4447111

—— SOCIAL BY HEINZ BECK

If you’re looking for a little New York style, there’s no better option in than Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah. We love the chic hotel’s restaurants and top of our list is Social by Heinz Beck. With three Michelin stars to his name, Beck is respected for his take on Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Choosing from the menu is a difficult task but we love the sole fillet in a seaweed crust with pak choy and crispy quinoa, as well as the chicken terrine filled with dry fruits, mashed potatoes and tasty curry foam. Don’t forget to check out the show kitchen to see all the action as the chefs prepare the culinary delights. The restaurant is open from 7pm to midnight daily. Contact: 04 8182222

MARCO PIERRE WHITE

For a very special evening, we recommend dining in this stunning restaurant where the décor is every bit as extraordinary as the food. French culinary master Pierre Gagnaire presides over the menu of mouthwatering dishes. This is a meal to savour so make plenty of time to enjoy. Open Monday to Saturday 7pm to late, closed Sunday. ASK THE CONCIERGE

Mark Corpus, chief concierge at Fairmont The Palm gives his recommendations for the best way to spend a weekend in Dubai

1

The weekend in Dubai takes place on a Friday and Saturday, and is the time when UAE residents and visitors are out and about making the most of the emirate. One experience that I always recommend is an evening desert safari. There is a host of companies who can take you out to the dunes with expert guides to lead the way. The trip usually starts with some dune bashing as you explore the beauty of the desert on an exciting ride in powerful 4x4 vehicles. Afterwards, watch the colours of the desert change as the sun goes down and the stars come out – it is an incredible experience. There’s also entertainment with live music and belly dancing, and a tasty authentic Arabic buffet around a desert campfire. Back in the city, one of the areas I believe is worth visiting during a weekend visit here is old Dubai. Friday morning is the best time to walk along the streets here as it’s pretty quiet. Stroll along the banks of Dubai Creek, have some fun shopping in the souks or gain an insight into the emirate’s rich past at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – the city’s oldest quarter. It

THERE IS NOTHING QUITE LIKE ENJOYING A MEAL IN THE WORLD’S HIGHEST RESTAUR ANT AT BUR J KHALIFA

1 At.mosphere restaurant 2 Desert safari 3 Pierchic, Jumeirah Al Qasr

dates back to 1859 and is a truly unique place where Emirati culture, history and traditions come to life. Of course, no trip to Dubai is complete without experiencing At the Top, the viewing platform in Burj Khalifa. The panoramas from the top of the world’s tallest tower are simply sensational. A helicopter tour of the city is also a great way to take it all in, from the amazing modern sights to the traditional areas, you can see it all during a flight. If you only have time to visit one mall while in the city, it has to be world’s largest, The Dubai Mall. I call it the ‘one stop mall’ as it is a complete complex for shopping and entertainment with everything you can think of. Friday mornings are a good time to go as it’s not too busy and you can take your time to explore. Dubai has a wonderful selection of restaurants to choose from. I would recommend Frevo for a taste of Brazil at Fairmont The Palm. Traditional churrascaria style dining is offered, as well as Brazilian entertainment and samba dancers at the Friday Brunch. Pierchic at Jumeirah Al Qasr, is one of the city’s most romantic restaurants and is perfect for a special occasion. The elegant venue specialises in seafood and boasts a stunning location, perched on a pier looking out over the Arabian Gulf. A dinner at At.mosphere restaurant is also very special as there is nothing quite like enjoying a meal in the world’s highest restaurant at Burj Khalifa. I believe Dubai’s kept secrets however, are to be found in the desert among the farms of the local Emirati people. In spite of the city’s transformation into one of the most exciting places in the world, desert life for me still remains the most interesting, out in the authentic surroundings of the beautiful dunes.
