‘The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri’ is a unique venue and the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi. From the sands of the desert rises the true story of the UAE. Over the past few decades, archaeologists have unearthed a wealth of ruins and artefacts that have given historians priceless information on the region’s heritage. From a Christian monastery dating to the sixth century to the tombs of early settlers that unveil the religious traditions of the Hafeet tribe, the emirates are scattered with remnants of times past. Concierge explores some of the key sites that should be at the top of every visitor’s list.

Al Bidya Mosque Al Bidya Mosque in Fujairah is the UAE’s oldest mosque but much of its history is a mystery. Experts estimate it was built around 1446 as a place of worship for the ancient Al Bidya people, of whom, again, little is known. The mosque is unique in design, masking its heritage even further. The sandcoloured structure, constructed from stone and mud bricks, features four pointed domes with cylindrical tips supported by an internal pillar but, unusually, no minarets. The interior is cave-like with small alcoves and
windows to encourage air flow. Despite its age, the original minbar (pulpit where the imam leads service) and mihrab (Makkah direction indicator) are still intact. In 2003, the mosque was designated as a historical place of interest and restoration began. Apart from a few upgrades, such as air conditioning and lighting, the mosque remains exactly as it was before. To this day, Al Bidya Mosque is fully functional and worshippers from the local area frequent the mosque to pray. Visitors are welcome to enter after the close of midday prayers.

Jebel Hafeet Tombs During the early Bronze Age, the plain below Jebel Hafeet mountain in Al Ain was home to the Hafeet people. The civilisation was largely made up of farmers but as it sat on a caravan route, influences from international travellers such as the Mesopotamians and the ancient Egyptians seeped into local culture. Religious rituals spread throughout the UAE, giving way to pagan Arab beliefs. One of these was the belief that the sun was a god. As such, when people passed away, they were buried under stone tombs that bared a tiny opening to let light in, or as they believed, to allow the sun god to visit their graves so they could come back to life after death. Many of these tombs, dating back around 5,000 years, can still be found. The largest is almost four metres high with a two-metre wide space inside. Identifiable by their round roofs, the tombs are valuable reminders of times past. They contained skeletal remains and artefacts such as pieces of pottery from the Mesopotamia era, arrowheads and beads. Bronze items were also found, suggesting the tombs were re-used during the Iron Era. In 2011, the site was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site but visitors can still travel to the tombs and enter the small spaces to see them from the inside.

Al Hili Archaeological Park In the 1960s, archaeologists began excavating the village of Al Hili in Al Ain and what they found changed notions of ancient life in the emirate. A whole settlement of towers, houses and tombs was unearthed across 10 hectares of land. A close look at the circular towers found there provides particularly significant insight. The structures, thought to have been built to protect trade routes, were constructed as a stronghold around a well with rooms in the outer walls and lie
near a collection of mud brick houses from the Iron Age. One of the greatest findings was the falaj water irrigation system. The oldest of its kind in the UAE, its presence exhibits the great engineering skills of the early settlers. Evidence of the copper industry was also found through artefacts left behind. Elsewhere on the site, now named Al Hili Archaeological Park, a number of ancient burial chambers were uncovered, including the Great Hili Tomb, a large stone tomb measuring eight metres in diameter.

Off the coast of Abu Dhabi lies an island with a great conservation project and an even greater history. Sir Bani Yas Island is home to one of the most significant archeological finds in the Gulf; a monastery dating back to the late sixth century. It was built by Christians who based themselves on the island due to its strategic location for Gulf pearl trade around the region. However, it was abandoned by the last few monks in 750ACE. It remains the only early Christian site in the UAE. Looking more closely at the complex, the evidence of a separate visitor’s room suggests that as well as locals, a lot of visitors, thought to be travelling pilgrims, visited the church. The discovery of pottery and trinkets from as far afield as Iraq and India support this theory. Further archaeological digs revealed that the monastery was built on top of a grave of the person who is thought to be the settlement’s founder. Visitors can explore the site during Sir Bani Yas Island nature and wildlife walks organised by Anantara Desert Islands Resort & Spa.

Capital art Abu Dhabi’s art galleries are shaping the city’s cultural future
The emirate’s rising prominence on the international arts stage is nothing short of admirable. News that museums such as The Louvre and The Guggenheim will soon open in Abu Dhabi have captured world headlines and propelled the UAE capital into the spotlight as a respected arts and culture hub. But it would be wrong to assume that the emirate was, in any way, lacking of a strong artistic foundation until those landmark announcements. For well over a decade, galleries in the capital have tirelessly worked to promote art in all its forms, hosting regular exhibitions and events to build awareness in the community and encouraging new talent from the wider Arab region. Etihad Modern Art Gallery One of the pioneers on the scene, Etihad Modern Art Gallery focuses its efforts on reaching out to the community and encouraging dialogue on cultural topics. “One of the big projects we have is to link art with culture and social development through charity. We also aim to reach young people, emphasising the importance of art on personal development to become productive members of the community,” says HE Khaled Seddiq Al Mutawaa, chairman and founder of Etihad Modern Art Gallery.
Abu Dhabi’s contemporary art scene is poised to reach new heights, as Al Mutawaa explains: “There is a developing policy towards cultural development in the capital and a drive to both introduce and contribute to the movement of art on a global scale. Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi are only the start of such investments made by the emirate. The base investment being made is on people, introducing art into their daily lives and allowing them to participate not only as viewers but also as creators. N2N Gallery Showcasing a mix of local and international artists, N2N Gallery is also well known for specialising in Ukrainian and Crimean art. “Ukraine has an incredibly strong and established school of art with exceptional artists such as Petro Bevza, Kateryna Kosyanenko, Mykola Zhuravel, Igor Shipilin and Stepan Ryabchenko who speak with a unique voice. CALL TO PRAYER City mosques in Abu Dhabi provide an interesting architectural contrast against the emirate’s modern urban backdrop and skyscrapers. Fashion forward Maison Zilli’s enigmatic founder, Alain Schimel, talks about the origins of the brand and future of menswear
From a humble workshop in Lyon to a name that’s respected globally for luxury menswear, Maison Zilli’s meteoric rise is nothing short of remarkable. The familyowned business already boasts a presence in over 20 countries, including the United Arab Emirates, and has no signs of slowing down. Maison Zilli ref lects f ine French elegance with Italian heart. Famed for its exemplary craftsmanship, Zilli’s success stems from the creation of the first luxury leather jacket in 1970 that still, even decades later, enjoys great demand. Iconic creations using exotic skins followed soon after, including jackets made with peccary and crocodile skin. Details such as silk lining in bold patterns and triple stitched seams have become hallmarks of the brand, alongside the use of only the best leather, including calfskin suede, deer, python and lambskin. Crafting a legend Alain Schimel has always been surrounded by fashion, even at a young age. His parents owned a workshop making coats in Lyon and opened several shops in the French city. Schimel however chose to study business management and law, and only decided to follow in the footsteps of his family in the 70s. “I have always been impassioned by style and elegance. By chance, when I was 25, I went with my father to his Italian tailor Teofilo Zilli in Lyon and was immediately impressed with his craftsmanship when working with leather. He may not have been great as a suit tailor but was really a master when it came to working on skins and furs. I quickly decided to invest in Zilli’s workshop and we became partners,” explains Schimel.

Right from the start, Schimel’s focus was on outfits he desired that weren’t available in the market at the time: sporty leather jackets in very luxurious fabrics that were, above all, as light and comfortable as possible. “I travelled a lot and brought the most unexpected leathers I could find to Zilli. It was a permanent challenge to work on all the different categories of hides, most of them exotic, and it was kind of a revolution at the time,” says Schimel. Maison Zilli then went on to introduce the luxury leather jacket, making fashion history. He explains: “I wanted to give men freedom by going against the trend of very formal suits at the time and offer them something
special, unique and emotional. That was the ultimate sensation of luxury – fantastic, rare and sensuous skins for exceptional jackets as light as silk. I knew it was crazy to work on these kind of clothes at the time but I have always had faith in the products, combining Zilli’s know-how and my intuition to find the best materials and quality that would make the difference.”
Family business Shortly after introducing luxury leather jackets to the world, Schimel was soon joined by his wife and children. 50 years later and Zilli is still very much a family-owned business, growing from just four people in the first workshop in 1965 to nearly 400 employees worldwide today. “I feel lucky to work with my family. As a family business, it means we can take decisions more quickly and that we can tackle challenges and take more risks. It also means we can trust our intuition. Actually, the main challenge

we face is to avoid talking about Zilli all the time and preserve our personal life. It’s not an easy subject as we are all passionate about what we do. A few years ago my daughterin-law and son-in-law joined us too, so we act like an Italian house with all the family on board,” says Schimel. In 1996, Zilli developed a full range of high luxury menswear – suits, jackets, jeans, knitwear, shirts, ties, shoes, bags and leather goods – that was added to the main collection. The core business still sees Zilli’s trademark leather jackets and accessories lines lead worldwide. Recently, however, there’s also been more interest in the knitwear collection and made-to-measure suits. 5
To the enigmatic Alain Schimel, a good luxury jacket is as much a fashion investment as an expensive timepiece. “For me, classic never means boring. It means real value, true elegance and timeless appeal. I think a classic piece is as precious as a high-complication watch that you keep for ages, then you give your jacket to your son, and it becomes more and more appealing over the years. Never too trendy and never out of fashion. Our peccary leather jackets are a good example of this definition as are our simple cashmere and vicuna coats with fur lining.”
What’s in store Maison Zilli has come a long way thanks in part to the dedicated craftsmen and their invaluable skills. “We still have people who have been with the company ever since the first collection launched in 1970. Before they retire, they will transmit their know-how and train the next generation of craftsmen. I am very proud that the artisans in our Lyon workshops were awarded France’s prestigious ‘Entreprise du Patrimoine vivant’ (Living Heritage Company) in 2011 for their savoir-faire. In fact, we’re the first men’s luxury company to receive it,” says Schimel with pride, adding that the Maison is looking to the future. “We cannot count on just our 150 year history and recognition to help us accelerate

the business. We still don’t have a certain level of brand awareness in some parts of the world such as Asia or South America. But it’s good in a way and my children will have to go further in the development of Zilli. It’s already been quite a success despite our young age, with 59 Zilli stores worldwide.” For Zilli, the Middle East remains an important market, representing 20 percent of the business’ turnover. Partnering with BinHendi Enterprises, the Maison boasts three stores in Dubai – Wafi City, Mall of the Emirates and The Dubai Mall – with plans to expand to Abu Dhabi. Speaking about the future of the menswear fashion industry, Schimel believes the focus will now be on innovating and developing new technical fabrics that are comfortable without compromising on the service aspect, including made-to-measure requests and bespoke orders. With Zilli’s avant-garde approach to men’s fashion, there’s a lot to be excited about, as he explains: “Succeeding in the transmission of our rich heritage is a challenge but I am confident that we will manage this with patience and time. Zilli is, for me and my family, an extraordinary story and adventure. I’d never hesitate to do it all over again.”

Fans have, for example, collected flower brooches that open to reveal a watch face and cuffs in which a dial is hidden, only to be revealed by its owner. This year, Van Cleef & Arpels announced the release of three new innovative High Jewellery timepieces. Arguably, the most distinctive is the striking Carpe Koï watch. Its sparkling cuff is set with 8,000 coloured gems and is designed in the shape of a Japanese koi fish curling around the wrist. Yellow sapphires and spessartite garnets are set on yellow gold and make up the body of the fish while the mouth opens to unveil a dial which is set with even more precious stones. Another piece in the collection, Abstraction, takes the idea of versatile, jewelled watches to another level. The timepiece can be worn as one large cuff or separated to become three magnetic bracelets. Rêves de Panthères is the newest timepiece to launch from the Panthère collection and sees, for the first time, three white gold panthers sit side by side on a bed of sparkling brilliant-cut diamonds. The watch is made all the more spectacular with its day to night movement. Driven by the self-winding calibre 9916 MC, the sky on the dial changes from starry night to shining sun. Many of Cartier’s timepieces are transformed into wearable art and the Ronde Louis Cartier XL is no different. The piece features a filigree panther motif in 22-carat yellow gold and platinum, with emeralds for the eyes, set on a backdrop of royal blue. Another new launch, the Large Model Tortue takes a different approach, featuring a panther’s head made of tiny mosaic pieces. Stepping away from the panther theme, the Ballon Bleu de Cartier exhibits a beautiful orchid motif engraved in mother-of-pearl with 18-carat yellow gold flower petals covered in red enamel. Founded by Swiss watchmaker Louis-Ulysse Chopard, the distinguished house boasts a long history of crafting precision timepieces. During the Art Deco period in particular, Chopard emerged as masters of diamond setting, producing a range of extraordinarily crafted wristwatches. Bringing decades of gem-setting experience into present collections, The L’Heure Du Diamant is a perfect embodiment of Chopard’s legacy. Created under the tutelage of artistic director Caroline Scheufele, the series includes a number of smaller sub-collections within it that feature oneof-a-kind creations paying tribute to the changing colours of the seasons. The L’Heure du Diamant watch is set with 21 carats of brilliant-cut diamonds to give an intensely shimmered effect. The exquisite piece boasts a silvered guilloche dial while the indices are set with still more glittering gems. The piece is presented in 18-carat white gold and rests on a bracelet of diamonds. At the crown is a briolettecut diamond to set off this show-stopping piece which is a testament to the skill and artistry of the Maison’s artisans.
Since its inception in 1960, Graff has produced some of the world’s most famous jewellery pieces. Just under a decade ago, the company made the bold move to add timepiece design to its long list of credentials. New for this year is the stunning Graff Butterfly. Inspired by ancient Egypt, Graff incorporates the elegant motif in the Classic Butterfly, which comes in two dial versions. One features a ring of diamonds contrasted by a plain black dial with an emerald, ruby or sapphire butterfly at six o’clock. The other dial features the butterfly at both six and 12 o’clock, as well as a pavé of diamonds across the face.

On the cover, three types of diamonds – brilliant, baguette,and marquise cut – outline the shape of a delicate flower that opens to reveal an ivy-decorated watch
dial. Craftsmen meticulously set each of the 304 diamonds on the timepiece in such spectacular fashion that the entire creation sparkles, and ivy leaves on the dial are engraved and painted by hand. Another highlight from the collection is the stunning new Rendez-Vous Ivy Tourbillon that reflects the highest standards in fine watchmaking craftsmanship. The timepiece features an elegant plum coloured dial and intricate lacework, though the main attraction is the rotating tourbillon powered by the calibre Jaeger-LeCoultre 978 movement. The design aesthetics of Rendez-Vous Ivy Tourbillon are truly one of a kind with a range of artistic details. The mesmerising tourbillon is crowned with a tiara of sparking diamonds and the signature ivy motif appears to bloom outward from the tourbillon onto the dial. YAS MARINA CIRCUIT Home to the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas Marina Circuit is one of the capital’s most famous sporting attractions. Visitors can experience it all year round at one of the many events on the annual calendar or on a tour that takes in its state-ofthe-art facilities, from the drag strip and karting centre to the track itself, which boasts the longest straight in Formula 1.

5 SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUE Built by the late Sheikh Zayed to help create a bridge between faiths and create greater cross-cultural understanding, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a must-see for any visitor to Abu Dhabi. The third-largest mosque in the world, this majestic structure is comprised of over 1,000 columns and 82 domes embellished with semi-precious stones, gold and marble. Inside, the spectacle is equally impressive with glittering chandeliers, spectacular floral motifs adorning the walls and a vast hand-woven Persian carpet in the main prayer hall.

FERRARI WORLD ABU DHABI The first ever Ferrari theme park is home to Formula Rossa, the fastest roller coaster on the planet, which reaches speeds of up to 240 kilometres per hour as well as the Fiorano GT Challenge, which offers an exhilarating simulated racing experience. There are rides for all the family here, from fastpaced coasters to leisurely tours and interactive games.

As an Emirati artist, the UAE capital holds its own special significance for me. I have an art studio in Raha Gardens and spend most of my time there. I paint a lot but also like to use the studio space for reading and writing because I find its atmosphere calming and inspiring. I tend to work all through the week, which I really enjoy, and weekends are when I relax and meet friends. I love walking and watching the sun set on the beach on Fridays. I’ve recently got into cycling so I’m now spending all my free time practising and learning to master the sport. I always try to enjoy myself, no matter where I am or what I am doing in the city. While a lot of people say the winter months from October onwards are the best, I really believe that it’s always a good time to be in Abu Dhabi. I personally prefer the summer season as it’s very calm with a slower pace of life. Schools are closed and lots of people are away on holiday. I recommend visitors take the time to research the many different cultural festivals that take place all through the year, including HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al
Nahyan Camel Festival and Qasr Al Hosn Festival, because they offer a rich cultural insight with activities that promote local folklore and traditions. I am a vegetarian and prefer eating Emirati dishes at home most of the time, but I do enjoy visiting cafés in the city and unwinding over a coffee with friends. My favourite café is Le Café at Emirates Palace but I also like Leopold’s of London at Boutik Mall on Reem Island, The Living Room Café at Khalidiya Village and Café D’Alsace at Yas Marina on Yas Island among several others. I don’t go to malls that often but I like shopping for seasonal plants and flowers in the city. There is a great selection worth checking out at Plant Souk in Abu Dhabi’s Mina Port area as well as Al Bustan Flowers in Khalidiya. I have so many special memories of my time in the capital. Every experience has become a beautiful memory from the serene Ramadan prayers held at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to the time I held my first art exhibition in Abu Dhabi. It’s such an inspiring city.
