2011 Alum Builds the
NEW COMPTON HIGH
SCHOOL
Did you know that Compton residents are involved and integral in the construction of the new Compton High School? One example is Compton local and 2011 Compton High School graduate Jave Jones. He currently works on the crew of 150 people who are at the construction site every day, building the new Compton High School campus that will be opened in 2025.

ONES recently started working as an Ironworker and is excited about the role he’s playing to build the new campus structures. His duties on the job site vary from day to day and he has been busy with numerous tasks constructing the main school building. “As far as what I'm doing to build Compton High School, I’m cutting, fabricating steel, hanging steel, bolting and connecting steel, tightening them down, and cutting them off,” said Jones. “I’m making sure everything is leveled and sitting right before we weld them together. I'm doing what-
ever I'm asked to do to make sure that this comes out to be a masterpiece.” Growing up in the city of Compton, Jones attended Bursch Elementary School, moved on to Enterprise Middle School, and then went to Compton High School. At Compton High School, he was an active athlete
and played football for four years. He was also on the basketball team and track team for two years. After graduation, Jones attended Los Angeles Harbor College for a year, and then worked a few different professions. “I had several jobs before n School, see page 8
Detectives make arrest in 2001 Compton cold case double murder On Aug. 8, 2001, a neighborhood experienced five separate drive-by in the Compton area experienced five separate drive-by shootings that tragically resulted in the unintended double murder of twoyear-old Kali Murphy and her 25-year-old father, Stephen Murphy. These shootings appeared to be acts of retaliation for a gang murder that occurred the previous night. The double murder of Stephen and Kali Murphy was the result of the third shooting that night, which occurred at 13130 Willowbrook Ave. Both victims sustained gunshot wounds to their head and were pronounced deceased at the location by rescue personnel. Investigators believed the double murder of Stephen and Kali Murphy was committed by a local black gang, and witnesses from that fateful night provided descriptions of two male black suspects involved. n Cold Case, see page 8
City honors Imani Speed City Compton Track Club for its success By Dennis J. Freeman I The Bulletin COMPTON - Getting to the USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships is no small feat. For Steve Todd and the Imani Speed City Compton Track Club, it’s become a habit.
It’s a pretty good one at that. For 27 years, the Imani Speed City Compton Track Club, based in the city of Compton, has made its way to the highest pillars in track and field to compete at the national meet. Todd is the man responsible for guiding the Imani Speed City Compton Track
Club to all its glory. This past summer, Todd took 47 of his kids from the Imani Speed City Compton Track Club with him to nationals. They came back with Photo by Dennis j. Freeman 24 medals.
