N Nov. 22, the community of Compton showed up big for a street renaming ceremony in honor of late rapper and music mogul Eric (Eazy-E) Wright. Wright, a central part of the hit-making group N.W.A., had an outstanding musical career and helped usher in a dynamic switch into hip-hop culture with the now famous gangsta rap. In N.W.A., Wright teamed up with Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella and Mc Ren, to produce one of the more historic sounds relating to rap music. n Eazy-E, see page 8

Bulletin Displays gets an assist from hoopster Glenn Robinson III Early in November, Bulletin Displays, a billboard company in Los Angeles, teamed up with NBA player and slam dunk champion Glenn Robinson III to put up one of its signature signs within the parameters of Compton.

The event was anything short of legendary.

Based in Los Angeles, Bulletin Displays was joined by GR3 who recently signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, for his grandest dunk to date!! Bulletin Displays designed, created and executed a larger-than-life installation of this incredible event.

Bulletin Displays supports Robinson in sharing his talented program with step-bystep tips on how others can master the skill of the perfect dunk. In partnership with the City of Compton, the Mayor, Emma Sharif, Councilwoman Lillie P. Darden, BD’s President Mark Kudler, Ombudsman Bishop Guillary, and other dignitaries, Robinson pulled off the amazing dunk.

Sen. Bradford helps makes Thanksgiving special for local families As many as 1,200 local families received free turkeys and groceries to make their Thanksgiving special. Sen. Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), in partnership with El Camino College, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and U.S.VETS Inglewood, distributed turkeys and pork roasts, bags of groceries, and gift cards to families in need this holiday season.

EN. BRADFORD began this annual tradition when he served on the Gardena City Council and has continued it during his service in the State Assembly and now as a member of the State Senate.

“This incredible community event grows bigger and more important every year,” said Sen. Bradford, who represents the city of Compton and other municipalities besides the South Bay. “Seeing the faces of the people receiving these turkeys gives me great hope that these meals will not only feed our community but act as the centerpiece of families gathering to give

thanks for each other’s support, faith and love.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to represent our communities in the state capitol and this turkey giveaway is one of my favorite ways to show my appreciation.

We could not do this without all of our sponsors and volunteers who care deeply about serving and helping others.

An event of this scale is only possible because of them. I am enormously grateful to each of them.”

County to explore giving away free gun locks Los Angeles, CA—Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn and her colleague Supervisor Hilda Solis are proposing a plan to allow doctors and nurses at County-operated hospitals and medical campuses to give out free gun locks as part of a harm reduction strategy to prevent gun violence.

“Gun locks can save lives – especially in households with children,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “Some studies have found that people are more likely to use gun locks if they are given to them by their doctor or in a medical center to take home and I think it is a concept we should explore for our own County hospitals.”

According to the Pew Research Center, 64% of US gun owners fail to keep their guns in a locked place and 56% of US gun owners keep their guns loaded. This increases the risk of injury or death within a house, especially for children and teens. Securely storing firearms with gun safety cable locks or within a gun safe or lock box is one way to prevent firearms from being accessed or used by children.

“If guns are not safely stored or locked, it can lead to devastating and fatal consequences. Gun owners may assume that their families know how to handle a gun, however, if it’s not safely stored

or locked, serious injuries or death may result. Hospitals are where many victims end up, and to that end, we can use the opportunity to both educate and provide them with a tangible resource to better protect them and their families from guns—gun locks,” said Supervisor Solis.

Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion authored by Supervisor Hahn and co-authored by Supervisor Solis to explore providing free gun locks for the public at Los Angeles County hospitals for people to take home and use to properly secure guns. Other hospitals

across the country have already implemented this practice following research showing its effectiveness.

“One of the easiest ways to prevent gun violence is to make certain that firearms are securely locked up with ammunition stored separately,” said Margot Bennett, Executive Director, Women Against Gun Violence. “Doing so helps prevent suicide, school shootings, and unintentional shootings. We are grateful to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors as they continue their efforts to prevent gun violence with this innovative approach to make gun locks easily available.”

The Department of Public Health’s Office of Violence Prevention and the Department of Health Services will report back to the board in writing in 45 days with information about the number of County-operated hospitals and medical campuses and the number of locks required for implementation, a proposed process and plan for implementation that includes a timeline to secure the locks, development of educational campaigns, and identification of a distribution strategy, and any resources required to purchase and provide gun safety cable locks, gun safes, and/or lock boxes.

In Berkeley, California Kicks Off Sixth Annual “United Against Hate Week” Antonio Ray Harvey| California Black Media Community and advocacy groups joined government officials and other leaders last week to kick off California’s sixth annual United Against Hate Week (UAHW) in Berkeley.

T

HE city of Berkeley in partnership with Not In Our Town, LA vs Hate, the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) held the ceremony on Nov. 13 with government and community at Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park in Berkeley.

The event was organized to raise awareness about discrimination, encourage cross-racial and cross-cultural tolerance, and inspire Californians to push back against the rise of hate crimes and hate incidents in their communities.

“This is a week of action where we recommit to working together, reckoning with our history, and building stronger communities for all. It's about coming together even -- and

especially when -- these conversations feel hardest to push for action,” said Becky Monroe, Deputy Director of Strategic Initiatives and External Affairs at the California Civil

Rights Department (CRD).

“Whether it's the Civil Rights Department, the California Department of Social Services, the State Library, Department of Justice, De-

partment of Education or elsewhere in government, we've been committed to the fight against hate and building on past efforts to spur on new initiatives,” Monroe added.

California has made statewide, historic investments to back up that commitment to make sure funding gets directly to the advocates and the service providers who are working day-in and day-out with individuals and communities who are targeted for hate.”

Phil Ting (D-San Francisco), Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee said he hopes more awareness will encourage victims of hate to use resources available to them like the CRD’s hate crime reporting hotline.

“With hate crimes increasing in California and different views spurring debate that sometimes turns hostile, movements like United Against Hate Week become more vital,” said Ting. n California, see page 8

Biden and the Black Press

Four years ago the Black Press helped deliver Biden's message and his eventual victory, a lesson the president appears to have forgotten this

time around.

Back in early 2020, his campaign struggling, then-candidate Joe Biden was considering packing up and calling it quits. Then he met with representatives of the Black Press and the rest, as they say, is history.

Fast forward to today and, as NNPA’s Stacy Brown writes, Biden seems to have forgotten what brought him “to the dance.”

“Despite numerous policies benefiting African Americans, his messaging remains non-existent,” says Brown, noting

that with the 2024 election looming, polls show support for Biden in Black and brown communities slipping.

Four years ago Biden was unequivocal: the Black vote would determine the election, he said in an interview with NNPA CEO Benjamin Chavis, adding, “The Black Press is the heart and soul as to why I got involved.”

A series of commitments addressing longstanding concerns in the Black community — from investments in affordable housing to the dismantling of redlining and other forms of housing discrimination — and follow-up coverage running across the more than 230 Black owned news outlets in the country helped turn out the Black vote in 2020, handing Biden the White House.

Now, with a Biden-Trump redux in the offing, Biden’s campaign appears to have forgotten it’s own recent history.

“Biden’s campaign boast-

ed a 16-week, $25 million ad buy targeting Black voters, yet the Black Press, with its unmatched influence and historical significance, is conspicuously absent,” Brown points out, noting there is a “massive difference between Black-targeted and Black-owned.”

And while $25 million is just a fraction of the $608 million the Biden campaign spent in the months leading up to November 2020 and the tens of millions more anticipated this election cycle, reporting suggests these early advertising efforts point to growing jitters over the president’s low approval ratings. And it isn’t just the Black vote.

Polls show Biden slipping across a number of communities. In the swing state of Michigan, where Arab Americans play a decisive role in election outcomes, anger over Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict is prompting many to stay away from the polls come ’24. Support

among Asian Americans has also dipped, according to one recent survey. And a recent friendly interview with Trump

by Univision has many Democrats wondering, wither the Latino vote.

To be clear, antipathy for Biden does not translate directly to support for Trump.

But with margins as tight as they are looking to be next year, Biden and his team can ill afford the apathy that appears to be taking hold across a range of what to this point have been reliable Democratic voting blocs Brown writes, “As the President gears up for a potential rematch against Trump, the question lingers: has Biden forgotten the rhythm that brought him to the dance, a rhythm inscribed in the ink of the Black Press?”

‘A Different World’ comes to Kean University Kean University welcomed cast members of the iconic TV show A Different World to a President’s Distinguished Lecture Series event on Thursday for a discussion of how college life and culture has changed since the sitcom began 35 years ago.

N an auditorium packed with Kean students, alumni and others, cast members Darryl M. Bell, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison and Cree Summer offered insight and shared memories from the show set in the fictitious Hillman College.

“Look at the past to inform our future – that is the premise,” said Kean President Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D., who introduced the actors to the enthusiastic crowd. “We have similar issues on campus. We have protests. We have Black lives that matter. Is it a different world 35 years later?”

A Different World ran from 1987 to 1993, depicting students at a fictitious historically Black college and taking on issues such as racism, AIDS, apartheid and date rape. It inspired many fans to go to college.

“Not a day goes by that someone doesn't come up to us and say, ‘I went to college because I watched A Different World,’” said Bell, who played character Ron Johnson.

The stage for the event was set like a giant living room – with comfy chairs for the speakers, and framed photos from the show displayed on tables. Moderator Chantonette Lyles, acting director of the Office of Accessibility Services at Kean, and David Jefferson Jr., Ed.D., coordinator of clergy communications and faith-based initiatives, Office of Government Affairs and Community Partnerships, led the discussion.

The focus was the relevance of the show then and now.

“I feel a lot has changed, but we’re still fighting apartheid.

Women are still fighting for the right to our own bodies. There’s

more representation needed in film and TV,” said Summer, who played Winifred “Freddie” Brooks. “We are facing the same problems they were facing.”

Guy, who portrayed lead character Whitley Gilbert, and other cast members noted there have been societal changes since the show aired.

“I see more Black representation and gay people on TV than I ever thought I’d see,” Guy said.

“We can’t say, since we’ve seen a Black president, that things haven’t changed,” added Bell.

“But there’s still work to be done.”

The Distinguished Lecture also offered fun and nostalgia, as cast members reminisced – including about who was dating who in real life – and the crowd enjoyed watching both the original opening credits, and a Kean-produced version featuring Kean students.

Many in the crowd said they enjoy A Different World now in reruns and on streaming services.

“I still watch it,” said Kean alumna Tami Rucker-Gage ’93, who drove from her home in Connecticut to attend. “I just knew I wanted to be here. I thought it was amazing.”

Jaylen Wright, a Kean graduate student from Union who is studying school counseling with LPC qualification, asked the cast a question.

“I grew up watching the characters ever since I was little, thanks to my mom. It was a part of my childhood," Wright said later. “I was so blessed to have this opportunity to be able to ask them a question. They are the reason I decided to go to college.”

Kean alumni Keral Cooper ’98, and his wife Marisa ’97, of Edison, said the show gave them a peek into what college life could be like.

“Like so many people here, we grew up on the show,” Keral Cooper said. “It was great to hear the actors’ perspectives on issues today, related to the show.”

One of the actors also gained perspective on college from A Different World. Hardison, who played Dwayne Wayne, did not attend college, explaining, “I went to college on television.”

“I wasn’t trying to change the world. But it turned out to be something that, 35 years later, people are still talking about and learning from,” he said.

He praised Kean’s commitment to its diverse student population and students who are the first in their families to go to college.

“Thank God for this school that reaches out to those like me, who had no ambition or desire to to go any further with education because I didn't think it was for me,” he said. “You are providing an unbelievable service to the community.”

Over three dozen graduating seniors from Firebaugh and Lynwood high schools earned on-the-spot college admissions from Whittier College during a multi-day college resource event, boosting their confidence and motivating them to finish their high school journeys strong.

Lynwood Unified partnered with Whittier College and Destination YOUniversity Podcast to empower students to work one-onone with college representatives to determine their eligibility and learn about the programs and resources available to them as they enter college. More than 20 students from each school received same-day admission offers this month, just weeks ahead of the November 30 college application deadline.

“This is important because students need to feel confident and can build confidence through this process,” said Destination YOUniversity founder Cynthia Colon, Ed.D. “The college admissions process should not be done alone, and we are happy to partner with Lynwood Unified to provide students another avenue to explore their college opportunities."

Destination YOUniversity is a wellrenowned podcast, college essay bootcamp and dream college academy, where mentors, educators and college-bound students team up to ensure they find the perfect fit as they graduate and pursue their college and career goals.

College and Career Center counselors will continue to support Lynwood Unified seniors with Cal State, UC and private university applications and college essays through the end of the month. Lynwood Unified students receive a wide range of tools and resources and inspiration as they prepare to embark on life after high school, including the annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Caravan, financial aid workshops, college and career fairs, and more.

Many Black students can barely afford Cal State. Tuition hikes will only make it worse

By Isaac Alferos With rising costs of housing, costs for food, budget shortfalls and COVID aid in the rearview mirror, the time has come for educational institutions to start looking for new ways to finance their operations. And no matter how predictable, it’s surprising to see that this time it’s the California State University system ready to ask students to pay up. Courtesy photo

AL STATE has increased tuition only once in the last 11 years, which has cemented the system’s reputation as one of the state’s most desired options for baccalaureate programs. While the university budget faces a $1.5 billion gap, an annual tuition increase risks pushing out

more low-income students and widening equity gaps for Black students.

Increases in tuition today will further threaten a growing population of students coming to Cal State. And though CSU remains the most affordable option for students looking for a four-year degree, it’s still too expensive. A 2022 report by Community En-

gagement for College Success Network noted that 40% of CSU students worry about affordability – by far their largest concern.

Even though a large population of students receive grants and institutional aid to help lower costs, it’s still not enough, and this inflating cost of attendance is no doubt impacted by California’s over-

all affordability crisis. But it’s important to note that the basic needs crisis this creates throughout Cal State leaves many students unable to fully invest in their own education.

A system-wide report found that 41% of students face food insecurity and 10% of students experience homelessness in any given year.

Turning around to ask

students to pay more for their education when it is already leaving students struggling to feed and house themselves is simply a cruel jest.

If that weren’t enough, being able to afford a degree exacerbates existing equity gaps that plague CSU. Reportedly, 76% of Black graduates within the system leave with debt n Tuition, see page 8

Another Turkey in the Oven Dr. James L. Snyder What would Thanksgiving be without a turkey?

Thanksgiving is always my favorite time because the focus of Thanksgiving is food.

Nobody loves food more than I do. I am always anxious for our Thanksgiving dinner to come.

This year I had a bit of apprehension before Thanksgiving. The kitchen is just next to the living room, and I was in the living room taking a little snooze, and just as I was waking up, I heard from the kitchen, “I’m going to put that turkey in the oven today.”

Cautiously, I got up and tiptoed out to the kitchen, and looking at my wife, I said, “Is there anything I can do to help you?”

Looking at me suspiciously, she asked, “What did you have in mind?”

“Anything,” I said, “that

Looking at me for a moment she burst out laughing.

Then she said something that has troubled me to this very day. “You want one turkey to help another turkey?”

Slowly, I went back into the living room and set up my chair to ponder what had just happened. I then heard from

the kitchen, “Yes, he said that.”

Then, there was a burst of laughter. I wished I knew who she was talking to.

I can’t recall all the times I got in trouble with The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage because I didn’t hear everything she said. She often tells me, “I know, my dear, you can hear but can’t listen.”

Cautiously, as I took a bite of that turkey, I glanced over

at The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. I was trying to find out a clue as to what I heard on the telephone this past week. She was paying me no attention and just enjoying the family around the table.

The next day, after it was all over and all the family had gone home, I sat in the living room relaxing and watching a little TV. On my mind was that turkey we had yesterday.

Then, a thought just got a hold of me at that time.

I thought that the center of our Thanksgiving dinner was the turkey. Everybody was talking about the turkey and how delicious it was. That got me thinking about my situation.

If the Thanksgiving turkey is the center of our family get-together, perhaps when my wife refers to me as a turkey, it means I’m the center of our family. That never occurred to me before. I didn’t

want to test it with The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage, I thought better.

Sometimes, what you don’t hear can be a blessing.

Thinking about this later that day I was reminded of what Jesus said. “If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given” (Mark 4:23-24).

When we add this to the reports of Cal State obscuring Black student data to hide the reality that Black graduation rates have maintained a 20% gap below white students over a 15-year span, why did this year’s Black Student Success report fail to reference affordability or transparent data in its recommendations?

The reality is the system is already struggling to substantively support Black students, with Black student enrollment struggling to push past 4% system-wide. As graduation and retention rates maintain their respective gaps, it’s clear that a tuition increase will only place more obstacles in front of Black students.

I have a deep love for Cal State. It’s not because of its structure or history or governance, but because of what CSU really is: extraordinary faculty, staff and students collectively committing to the just cause of building educational opportunities for communities where education historically failed.

With this in mind, it’s hard to see the direction CSU is going as being aligned with the steps needed to rectify the existing crises, helping create affordable, equitable, quality education.Like many CSU students, I found myself outside the dated perspective of what a “traditional” student is.

And though I am fortunate to come from a family of proud Black Cal State grads, I’m scared I could be the last in my family to call CSU home.

Meanwhile, the hometown's future Hall of Famers that play in the same city are seen as the enemy rather than being accepted with open arms. It is not like they play for the Celtics.

"We were those kids looking up to guys like Paul Pierce (Inglewood) and Baron Davis (Santa Monica). Those guys are O.G.s that had very successful careers, and we have an opportunity, and I think we have been doing a good job thus far, but we have an even better opportunity to do it and show them, whether it's in the community or on the court," said Harden when he was traded to the Clippers on Halloween.

"That is definitely a story that we will try to push, trying to help the community because they are next, and we know they are watching us."

True Los Angeles sports fans should support the Clippers this year. Aspiring athletes in the community can use the Clipper stars as inspiration, just as Harden did before them on his journey to the NBA. Lakers fans need to put their differences aside and recognize how special it is to have a core of all LA native players hooping for their city.

"Being a part of the community is a big part of it for me.

Making sure that I continue to do things in our community builds support and shows that we have an impact and are able to continue to inspire people. Especially in Los Angeles, knowing that I am from here, that is important," said Westbrook on media day.

Fans are understandably passionate about their teams, and it would only be right to show that same energy regarding local talent. The quartet of Clippers stars are valued leaders within the community and should be treated with love and respect in their hometown.

A key component of the state’s anti-hate initiatives is CA vs Hate. In the first six months, hundreds of Californians have contacted the service to report hate crimes.

“During United Against Hate Week, we encourage all Californians to take advantage of existing resources -- like California vs Hate -- to push for change from the ground up for all our communities. Whether it’s because of conflict abroad or here at home, it takes real strength to stand in solidarity in the face of bias and discrimination,” said CRD Acting Director Mary Wheat.

Since its inception, UAHW has spread to over 200-plus communities.

Faith-based groups, civil rights advocates and other community based and civil rights organizations across California organize events each year to commemorate it.

“By supporting bills such as AB 449 (Ting), the CA vs Hate Hotline, and our collaborative efforts with the (California Department of Social Services') Stop the Hate grant, we will make a positive difference in the statistics we have seen persist for far too long,” Callender stated.

Reported hate crimes targeting Black people remain the most prevalent, increasing 27.1% from 513 in 2021 to 652 in 2022, while reported anti-Asian hate crime events decreased by 43.3% from 247 in 2021 to 140 in 2022.

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts has announced the return of SoCal’s favorite holiday tradition – American Ballet Theatre’s captivating production of The Nutcracker coming to Segerstrom Hall stage with 12 performances from Dec. 8 -17, 2023.

Co-presented by the Center and American Ballet Theatre with choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, The Nutcracker is the beloved holiday story based on The Nutcracker and the King of Mice written by E.T.A. Hoffmann and set to Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky’s magical score performed live by Pacific Symphony.
