SANTA MONICA, CA— On Thursday, Oct. 26, The Quad at Santa Monica College’s Main Campus in Santa Monica, Calif. was a scene of joyous activity and conversation. Impromptu dancing to music played by a live DJ.

took place underneath the palm trees lining The Quad—SMC’s first-ever HBCU Caravan, a college fair highlighting Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) from across the country, attended by nearly 500 students.

Twenty HBCUs—including such institutions as Morehouse College, Grambling State University, Virginia State University, Arkansas Baptist College, and Dillard University—sent representatives to California, so they could participate in

the HBCU Caravan. The college fair was the culmination of several free events and workshops to promote HBCUs to community college students.

Cree McMath, a biology major at SMC, plans on attending an HBCU. Interacting with the Clark Atlanta University representative was a highlight for McMath, since she plans on attending the university towards her goal of becoming a doctor. “After these two years [at n HBCU, see page 8

Black political and business leaders endorse Robert Kennedy Jr. NEW YORK -- In the past two weeks, more than 40 Black business and political leaders from Washington, D.C. and New York attended events supporting Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for President. Dinners at Sfoglina in Washington, DC, and Sei Less in New York City were organized by American Values 2024 (AV24), the SuperPAC supporting Kennedy's presidential campaign. Of the guests, nine people have officially endorsed Kennedy for his presidential campaign.

Crypto professional John Slade exclaimed, "My grandfather, John D. Slade, endorsed John F. Kennedy, Jr. in 1960. My dad, Kenyatta Slade, endorsed Ted Kennedy in 1980, and here I am endorsing Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. in 2023."

Lugo Elementary School caps off Latino Heritage Month with ¡Loteria Night!

Schools across Lynwood Unified honored rich Latino traditions and cultural excellence with festive activities, spirit days, and educational opportunities throughout Latino Heritage Month, with Lugo Elementary School capping off the festivities with a Lotería Night on Oct. 20.

Lotería is a traditional game of chance, similar to bingo, and is played with a deck of cards with colorful, cultural icons. It is one of many activities guests had the op-

portunity to take part in at Lugo’s inaugural event, which was organized by the school’s Cultural and Community adjunct committee.

The event featured a musical performance, traditional food including pozole, aguas frescas, and churros - as well as fun activities with traditional piñatas.

Students participated in an art contest as part of the month-long celebration and the top three winners were acknowledged at the event. Their artwork ranged from

colorful drawings to paintings on canvas, and the top winner was fourth-grader Mason Cortez, who submitted a mixed-media piece titled “Everyone is Beautiful.”

Despite high Black maternal death rate, California hospitals ignored training about bias in care

By Kristen Hwang More than two and a half years after a law took effect requiring maternity care staff to complete racism in medicine training, only 17% of hospitals were in compliance, according to an investigation published by the state Department of Justice Friday.

HE training mat­ ters, Attorney Ge­ neral Rob Bonta and others said during a press conference, because of the state’s persistently high death rates among Black mothers.

Though California is often looked at as a national model for improving maternal outcomes, Black women are still far more likely than others to die during pregnancy. They account for only 5% of pregnancies in the state but make up 21% of pregnancy-related deaths, according to the California Department of Public Health.

The mortality rate for Black infants is also three times higher than for white infants and nearly 1.5 times higher than for Pacific Islander babies, the second highest mortality rate, state data shows.

Investigations into the cause of all pregnancy-related deaths by the California Department of Public Health determined that more than half are preventable.

“We need to listen to this data. It’s screaming at us to do something,” Bonta said. “Listen to these women and make substantial transformative change before another patient is hurt, or worse.”

No hospitals were in compliance when the department began its investigation in 2021, and not a single employee had completed training.

The law requires hospitals and other facilities to train perinatal care providers on unconscious bias in medicine and racial disparities in maternal deaths. It took effect in January 2020.

Bonta recommended lawmakers adopt additional regulations to strengthen the law, including setting clear deadlines for compliance, designating a state agency to enforce the law and introducing penalties for noncompliance.

Former state Sen. Holly Mitchell, the Los Angeles Democrat who authored the bill, said “clearly more must be done” to implement the policy.

“It is my full expectation that every hospital across L.A. County and across the state join in making sure that their staff take the training,” said Mitchell, who is now a Los Angeles County supervisor.

“We are simply asking them to follow the law.”

According to the department’s investigation report, about 76% of more than 200 hospitals surveyed had begun training employees by August 2022 but had not completed training. Two hospitals had not fully trained any staff, and 13 did not provide the department with any information.

“Nearly a third of facilities to which DOJ reached out began training only after DOJ contacted them, suggesting that DOJ’s outreach caused compliance in many cases,” the report states.

Black women report mistreatment at hospitals It is well-documented that racism in health care settings contributes to poor outcomes.

Black women in California consistently report poor experiences with medical professionals during pregnancy, including mistreatment because of their “race, age, socioeconomic class, sexuality, and assumed or actual marital status,” according to a recent research review and report by

the California Department of Public health.

They also struggle to convince providers that they are in pain and report mistreatment when advocating for their health during pregnancy.

A national survey from 2016 revealed half of white medical students and residents believed false and debunked myths about the biological differences between white and Black patients. Those who endorsed the beliefs were more likely to dismiss patients’ pain and make inaccurate treatment decisions.

“What is so deeply offensive about that is it is within our power to change,” Mitchell said.

Implicit bias training is the “bare minimum” of what health professionals can do to improve outcomes, said Assemblymember Akilah Weber, a Democrat from La Mesa and a medical doctor.

Research also shows maternal and infant health disparities among Black women and babies persist regardless of patients’ education or income

levels. Celebrities like Serena Williams and Beyoncé have spoken out about their neardeath experiences during childbirth.

Recent maternal deaths in Los Angeles Earlier this year, the deaths of two Black women, Bridgette Cromer and April Valentine, in childbirth shook Los Angeles. Valentine’s death led to a state investigation and a $75,000 fine levied against Centinela Hospital Medical Center where her daughter was delivered via C-section.

The investigation stated the hospital “failed to prevent the deficiencies…that caused, or are likely to cause, serious injury or death” to Valentine, , including repeated failure to take steps to prevent blood clots, a common pregnancy risk, even when Valentine complained of feeling heaviness in her leg, numbness and leg swelling.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined she died from a blood clot that traveled from her leg into her lungs.

Centinela announced its intent to close the maternity ward permanently days after Valentine’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The maternity ward, which delivered more than 700 babies last year, closed Wednesday.

In a GoFundMe post, Cromer’s family said they did not have autopsy results yet but noted that she was readmitted into the operating room after birth with major bleeding before dying.

Gabrielle Brown, an advocate with Black Women for Wellness, said Centinela’s maternity ward closure is “a stark reminder of how healthcare disparities persist in our society.”

“It reminds us of the implicit biases that have subtly influenced healthcare decisions, ultimately leading to an immense reduction in the accessibility and quality of care for many members of our community,” Brown said.

lend stronger support. Check out two podcasts created by Military OneSource. Covering topics like deployment, casualty assistance, money management and parenting, they are designed to help military members and families thrive, and can help others understand the difficulties of military life.

2. Volunteer. Hands-on support is some of the most impactful work you can do in the nonprofit sector, and organizations rely heavily on volunteer power to carry out their missions. The American Red Cross is currently recruiting caseworkers for military members, veterans and families. This volunteer role requires some training, but can be carried out from anywhere, and shifts are flexible. Whether you’re looking for remote or in-person volunteer opportunities, search Points of Light Engage, the world’s most comprehensive database of volunteer opportunities around the globe.

You can also get inspired by such dedicated volunteers as Navy servicewoman and Daily Point of Light Honoree Michaela White. For the past two years, she’s advocated for mental health in the military, volunteering her time with

Patrol Base Abbate, a nonprofit that fosters community and purpose among service members and veterans.

3. Donate. Nonprofits and NGOs are dependent on donations to pay their staff, recruit volunteers and execute their high-impact work.

This year marks Wounded Warrior Project’s 20th anniversary. You can support its mission of providing career and VA benefits counseling, mental health support, adaptive sports initiatives and more, by making a donation for National Veterans and Military Family Appreciation Month.

4. Celebrate, thank and honor veterans. Veterans and their family members are everywhere – from working alongside you to doing everyday things like grocery shopping, eating at a restaurant and more. Consider ways you can celebrate and honor military members or veterans in your community. It might be as simple as thanking a coworker for their service, writing a thank you note and dropping it off at your local VA or sending one virtually through Soldiers’ Angels. You might also attend a Veterans Day parade or event in your community or simply ask a veteran about their service.

These gestures can go a long way in helping veterans and service members feel seen and appreciated.

Retired fireman, Army veteran and Daily Point of Light Honoree Tom Schneider is a great example of someone who integrates his work with causes he cares about. Since 2017, he’s extended a helping hand to those devastated by floods, fires, tornadoes, hurricanes and even plane crashes as an American Red Cross volunteer.

From volunteering your time and talent, to contributing your resources, there are many ways to honor former and current military members and their families this month.

A of the knee is the most common type, affecting more than 12 million Americans ages 65 and older. The signs and symptoms of OA can vary, but commonly include joint stiffness, pain during activity, and cracking or creaking noises around the joint.

“Although there is no treatment that can reverse OA, physical therapy can help individuals manage the symptoms conservatively through appropriate and individualized exercise programs and other treatments provided by physical therapists,” said Rachel Prusynski, PT, DPT, PhD, a spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association.

“Physical therapy may also help to prevent a worsening of OA and the need for invasive procedures and prescribed pain medications.”

Backed by research. Many studies have shown that physical therapy is effective in helping manage OA. Now, a new report released by the American Physical Therapy Association provides another reason to choose physical therapy for OA of the knee over commonly used steroid injections — the overall value that physical therapy delivers to patients and the health care system.

People with OA should increase their physical activity routines more gradually than those without OA and should avoid highimpact exercises (think jumping or pounding movements on the joints).

Prusynski suggests five ways to manage OA symptoms through movement: • Regular physical activity can help maintain and improve movement and function, and reduce joint pain for people with OA. Physical therapists can prescribe a tailored, individual physical activity plan, which in addition to helping with OA symptoms, can also boost heart health and facilitate weight loss.

• Muscle strength training with exercises primarily aimed at the large muscle groups around the knee and hip joints. Muscle strengthening exercises include lifting weights or working with resistance bands.

• Low-impact aerobics activities put less stress on the joints and include brisk walking, cycling, swimming, water aerobics, light

gardening, certain group exercise classes and dancing.

• Balance exercises like walking backward, standing on one foot and tai chi are important for those who are at risk of falling or who have trouble walking. Having OA can increase your risk of falling, so it’s important to build your balance and strength.

• Flexibility exercises like stretching and yoga are important for people with arthritis to reduce muscle tension and strain. Yoga can be modified for those with arthritis. Some people with OA have joint stiffness that makes daily tasks difficult.

Doing daily flexibility exercises helps maintain your range of motion so you can keep doing everyday things like household tasks, hobbies and visiting with friends and family.

Do I Need a New Mask for Halloween?

Dr. James L. Snyder for all the gifts under the The older I get, the less patience I have for holidays. I certainly am not a holiday guru in any sense of the word.

Y least favorite holiday is Halloween.

I'm unsure who came up with this idea, and I don't have the time to research it and find out. If I knew its roots, I might like it less than I do today.

Some people think their birthday is the best holiday of the year.

That was true for me for several years until I realized I was getting one year older every time I celebrated a birthday.

If I missed celebrating my birthday would I get any older? It’s worth a try.

One of the things about birthdays is that the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage's birthday is two days after mine. Now I know why she makes me a birthday card: to remind me that her birthday is coming up.

I used to like Christmas until I started to pay the bill

tree. When the children were young, I could buy them something they would like, not caring about the price.

As they got older, they got more sophisticated in the gifts they wanted. I use the word "sophisticated" because that has everything to do with money. The more a gift cost, the better it was received.

The Halloween holiday is quite exciting now that the kids have grown up and moved into their own homes and families. We do have kids in the neighborhood who come by dressed in Halloween costumes, looking for candy. They don't have to beg when they come to my house; they just stand there, and I can’t give it out fast enough.

How much do the parents understand that candy is not healthy for their children?

The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage is not too excited about Halloween, but I always buy bags of candy I hide so she can’t see them.

And my goal is to give them all away to kids that come to the door.

Usually, I dress up in some scary costume to give the candy to the kids to come to the door.

I like to stay current, so the other day, I asked The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage a very serious question that I don't think she took seriously. I looked at her and said, "Do you think I need a new mask for Halloween this year?" Now, that was a very serious, straightforward question.

Looking at me as usual, she said, "Oh, no, you silly boy. The mask you're wearing now is good enough for this Halloween."

She walked away before I could tell her I was not wearing a mask.

I was thinking about this matter of celebration when I remember a verse of scripture I read recently. Psalm 95:2, “Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.”

The thing I need to celebrate each day is my relationship with God. Nothing is more important to me daily than to recognize all that God has done for me throughout my life. I have so much to be thankful for in my life and not a day should pass in my life that I should not be thankful to God for something.

Children Out of School in America built on a Massachusetts task force’s local research on children who were not enrolled in school in Boston.

CDF staff examined official federal and state data, and from that analysis determined there were two million children nationwide who were out of school for at least three months, including 750,000 children between 7-13 years old. But there was no clear information on who these children were and why they

were at home.

To learn more, CDF staff knocked on 8,500 doors in 30 census tracts in nine states to find families whose children were not in school and ask them why not.

One of the colleagues knocking on doors was a young lawyer named Hillary Rodham, later First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Another was MaryLee Allen, who went on to anchor CDF’s policy work for more than 40 years, while the data analysis and follow-up survey were designed by longtime CDF director of research Paul Smith.

CDF learned that a large number of the 7-13-year-olds who were at home were children with physical, emotional, or learning disabilities. Another large group were children

who had been pushed out by discipline policies and never returned to school. In Holyoke, Massachusetts, we found children who had recently moved from Puerto Rico staying home when it got cold because they had no winter coats.

In a rural Maine community we found children who couldn’t afford the local school district’s transportation fees and were unaware that the state would reimburse the local district for transportation costs. In other states like Kentucky the key barriers were book fees. In Children Out of School in America, CDF summed up the many documented problems and the eventual conclusion: “If a child was not White, or was White but not middle class, did not speak English, was poor, needed spe-

cial help with seeing, hearing, walking, reading, learning, adjusting, growing up, was pregnant or married at age 15, was not ‘smart enough’ or was ‘too smart,’ then, in too many places, school officials decided school was not the place for that child. In sum, out of school children shared a common characteristic of differentness by virtue of race, income, physical, mental or emotional ‘handicap,’ and age.

They were for the most part, out of school not by choice but because they had been excluded. It is as if many school officials had decided that certain groups of children were beyond their responsibility and were expendable. They excluded them arbitrarily, discriminatorily, and with impunity.”

Following that 1974 report, CDF and others worked togeth-

er to push Congress to pass legislation in 1975 that for the first time gave children with disabilities the federal right to a free, appropriate public education—the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, now the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA. It was an early victory affirming the beliefs that no child is expendable, every child deserves a right to learn, and no child should be excluded from the indispensable lifeline of education. The battle to make these beliefs real for every child and youth, including the need to reform discipline policies that push students out, would continue. But it was, and remains, an essential battle to fight. Every child and youth today still deserves an education that allows them to reach their full potential.

Guests at the event were treated to an experience that brought together Black and brown families across the private school community.

Additionally, more than 40 schools and community resource organizations had tents to provide an opportunity

for current parents to rally around their respective schools while prospective families learned more about various schools.

The annual event included several food trucks, a DJ, a teen village, photo booths, carnival games, a sneaker donation drive, and more.

Private School Village (PSV) is a parent-led voluntary 501(c)3 nonprofit working to support Black and brown families once enrolled in private schools so that students fully thrive.

Hockey pioneer Willie O'Ree gets stamp EDMONTON - Cana­ da Post issued a new com­memorative stamp honouring the life and legacy of Willie O'Ree, the National Hockey League's first Black player. The stamp was unveiled at an event Saturday in Edmonton as part of the 2023 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic weekend festivities.

O'Ree made history when he took the ice for the Boston Bruins® against the Montreal Canadiens® on January 18,

1958, at the Montréal Forum.

Following a trailblazing career, O'Ree has continued to inspire generations of Canadians, dedicating his life to promoting diversity and inclusion in hockey.

His work encourages young people to follow their dreams despite obstacles or prejudice. In 2018, O'Ree was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame for his work on and off the ice, and the NHL has since created the Willie O'Ree Community Hero

Janet Robinson, Ed.D., who is SMC’s transfer center faculty leader, said that it is important to ensure that “not just SMC students, but all students at community colleges and high schools, are aware of all their options when it’s time to choose a four-year institution.”

“We are fortunate in California to have amazing public institutions like the UC and CSU systems and a host of private schools, too—these are all great options. But in addition, we have an incredible swath of institutions in our HBCUs,” she said. Robinson added that because a lot of HBCUs are located elsewhere in the country, the Caravan gives California students an opportunity to learn about the plethora of HBCU options available to them.

The HBCU Caravan, as Robinson points out, is named thus because representatives travel, visiting multiple community colleges in the state. With the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning race as a factor in university admissions, upending affirmative action, Robinson stated that more Black students may consider applying and transferring to HBCUs. “So, today was a great opportunity for students to interact directly with representatives from these schools,” she added, noting that the event—which was open to the public—attracted students from other community colleges and high schools in the region. The SMC Black Collegians Umoja Community and the SMC Pan African Alliance as well as dozens of volunteers from across campus helped make the event a success.

Ryan Gray, assistant director of admissions and transfer in online operations for Morehouse College, stated this was the first time Morehouse was participating in the HBCU Caravan. “We are just so happy to be here today, to represent the HBCUs in a place that doesn’t have many HBCUs. The response from SMC students is touching, and heartfelt.”

On why HBCUs are such an important option, Gray said: “We share our story, and we educate based off of our experiences, along with [that] of society. Just being able to share our stories in places where we can be ourselves . . . is very important.”

Before each dinner commenced, attendees and representatives from AV24 discussed Kennedy's platform, including his tentative reparations plan and prison and police reform policies, key issues in which guests were interested.

This point was exemplified by political analyst Clay D'Souza, who expressed, "The reason I'm supporting RFK, Jr. is that I do feel that the Democratic Party needs to have another alternative compared to Joe Biden, as we need more diverse options in this particular election coming up in 2024.

I definitely favor RFK Jr.'s reparations plan, which I clearly see is absent from the Biden campaign as we speak."

Other important issues to guests were health equity and medical freedom regarding people of color. Jo Saint George, Esq., a trailblazing attorney who represents clients in these areas, was very vocal about her endorsement of Kennedy, expressing: "I'm a 30-year attorney

and Founder of the Women of Color for Kennedy 2024. I have been practicing law and, specifically, as a trial lawyer in healthcare. And for me, the most valuable aspect of Kennedy's campaign is his work in health care, specifically in medical freedom. I represent over 150 individuals in New York and around the country who've been fighting for their medical and religious liberties to choose what goes in their bodies. And Kennedy has fought for decades for that right. Not only that but also for environmental rights for African Americans, environmental equity and protections are critical for our community; health equity and being able to make the right choices for each family is the number one quintessential value in our community. Why? Because we are impacted disproportionately by chronic disease. And, so for me, as a lawyer who watched Mr. Kennedy for decades from afar, advocating for myself and the community at large on those two key issues is why I'm supporting him."

A theme throughout the dinner in Washington, D.C., was that attendees wanted to have the right to make choices related to their bodies. Don Ross, Pastor of Liberty Mission Church, who also endorsed Kennedy, summarized the sentiments of the evening,

"As a pastor, I care about people and their ability to be able to make choices because God, in his dealing with mankind, gives us choices all the time. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. gives us the right to choose what goes into our bodies. He gives us the right not to have harmful vaccines going into our bodies, which means a lot to me. And that resonates with me as a pastor because that's what Jesus came to do to give us the freedom of choice to keep our bodies healthy."

The backing of these prominent Black leaders was just the beginning. Political consultant Alpheaus Marcus supports Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. because "I believe strongly that some of the things he is saying about in the urban community are essential talk in the presidential race. I think that we need to get behind him because it's a change. And he brings common sense to the table."

Kennedy strives to uplift Black voices through actions and not just words. It is crucial that people of color, especially the Black vote, truly understand Kennedy's plan to effectuate racial healing, and their support truly underpins the campaign's core values of inclusivity, equality, and a vision for a more united, healed America.
