announces candidacy for SENATE

Former U.S. representative Laura Richardson declared her candidacy for California’s 35th Senate District to replace Sen. Steven Bradford, who is termed out.
ALIFELONG Democrat, Richardson has spent most of her life living in the 35th Senate District. She previ- ously served in the California Assembly, representing the 55th District, and

served in leadership as the Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore and was the first African-American and South Bay representative to achieve this position.
“Throughout my time in public office, I worked hard, brought money and resources into my district, and in and in conjunction with a committed staff, resolved resident casework for disability and social security claims, significantly adding to much-needed benefits and payments for residents in my district,” said Richardson.
Some of the people who have already thrown their support behind Richardson include Compton Mayor Emma Sharif, Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes, Compton Unified School District Board Member Micah Ali, and Compton Community College District Board Trustee Barbara Calhoun.
A recent sur-
vey of likely March 2024 primary voters in California’s 35th State Senate District conducted by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates (FM3 Research) shows Richardson to be a strong contender for this open seat.
“The survey found Richardson’s favorability rating to be similar to or better than most current and former elected officials with experience representing communities within the 35th Senate District and better than candidates expressing interest but have not served higher than the local office,” said John Fairbanks.
Richardson was born in Los Angeles and lives in San Pedro. She was raised by a single mother after her parents divorced when she was two. Her mother was a member of the Teamsters and remains a retiree today. Laura graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned her MBA from the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business.
Richardson served on the Long Beach City Council from 2000 to 2006, and while serving in the Assembly in 2007 after the untimely passing of Congresswoman Juanita Millender McDonald, she was elected to

No Menthol Sunday: A Day of Reflection, Education, and Action Against Tobacco Use
FAITH COMMUNITIES COME TOGETHER TO ADDRESS THE PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS CAUSED BY MENTHOL CIGARETTES AND OTHER FLAVORED TOBACCO PRODUCTS
By Carol J. McGruderThe African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC) encourages all African American congregations and spiritual institutions to come together on Sunday, May 21, for No Menthol Sunday. No Menthol Sunday is the African American expression of the World Health Organization’s, international World No Tobacco Day, an annual opportunity to address the devastating impact of tobacco use on Black communities. This year’s campaign theme, “Focus on Victory, Go Against the Grain,” emphasizes the need to stand against the predatory tobacco industry
and create healthier, more just communities.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tobacco use can cause a range of illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other diseases, as well as a decrease in overall quality of life. The California Health Interview Survey found that a staggering 47.7% of African American/Black adults who smoke use menthol cigarettes, compared to only 16.5% of white adults. Through No Menthol Sunday, this health disparity is addressed as religious/spiritual congregants and community members
across California are informed about the harms of smoking, vaping, and the role of menthol and other flavors. It also provides an opportunity for the community to support individuals who smoke to em-
bark on a new journey toward quitting.
“The pandemic has exposed and amplified health disparities among African Americans, especially when it comes to smoking-related deaths. This highlights the importance of individuals prioritizing their health and taking action, such as quitting smoking,” said Carol McGruder, Co-Chair of the AATCLC.

“Join us on No Menthol Sunday and everyday as we come together to fight against this preventable health crisis. We must go against the grain and continue to stand up for our well-being to create a healthier future for ourselves and our communities.”
The AATCLC and the African American Statewide Coordinating Center, AMPLIFY, hosted a virtual kick-off event earlier this month to equip faith leaders across the state with the knowledge and tools needed to educate their congregants on the harmful effects of tobacco use for No Menthol Sunday. Esteemed panelists discussed policy, law enforcement, and cessation strategies surrounding commercial tobacco’s impact on Black communities. Despite the progress made since the Food & Drug Administration initiated the rule-making process to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol,
Tobacco pollution lays waste to equity and justice.
While California has achieved one of the lowest tobacco use rates in the nation, we still remain Big Tobacco’s largest market in the US. Roughly 12 billion cigarettes out of the six trillion made annually worldwide are sold in California. So, what happens to these products after they’ve been sold?
Unsurprisingly, Big Tobacco claims no responsibility for the tobacco pollution its products generate. They desperately want us to believe that cigarette butts and vapes found on the ground are simply a litter problem caused by the people who use their products, and the solution is as simple as ashcans and beach cleanups.
Because Big Tobacco intentionally and aggressively targets lowincome communities and communities of color, a higher number of stores in these areas sell tobacco than in other places. And the more stores that sell tobacco, the higher the level of tobacco pollution-exposure for residents. Tobacco waste particularly builds up around where these products are sold and used.
As more research reveals how Big Tobacco pollutes our environment with its toxic products, it becomes a more urgent and serious community threat. All Californians are harmed by tobacco pollution — whether they use tobacco or not — much like toxic secondhand smoke exposure. And many of those most impacted can’t control the environment they live in, like children, who are especially vulnerable to exposure. Tobacco pollution is associated with elevated levels of lead in children’s blood. It may also load
certain neighborhoods with unacceptably high levels of nicotine, benzene, and heavy metals. And these devastating impacts can last for decades after tobacco products have been sold.

Research also shows that tobacco pollution builds up around high schools at different levels depending on the socio-economic makeup of the students at the school. There are a higher number of vape shops closer to schools in communities with more Asian and African American/Black students. Vapes have all the same environmental problems as cigarette butts — plastic pollution and toxic chemicals leaking into the environment — plus, because they’re electronic devices, they leave behind electronic waste, which is notoriously difficult and costly to dispose of.
Communities of color and low-income communities bear an unreasonable burden of health impacts from pollution of all kinds — from substandard housing containing lead and asbestos to industrial pollution and air pollution. Tobacco waste adds to already unacceptable levels of pollution. Bottom line: No one, and no place, is safe from Big Tobacco.

than 5,000 (5, 025) people and provided glasses to 750 of those individuals at no cost, according to Compton District 4 Councilwoman Lillie P. Darden’s office. Taking $75,000 out of her own pocket, Hamilton brough Angels for Sight to life with a state-of-the-art facility.
Hamilton’s impact through Angels for Sight has been felt in a big way throughout Compton. Hamilton’s passing is just as momentous. A heart-felt memoriam written by Barbara Cocks celebrates and highlight the work and legacy that Hamilton left behind.
After a prolonged struggle with health issues that plagued her for over two decades, on April 19, 2023, Shea left all of the Angels she recruited to her cause knowing that they would continue the work she was so passionate about.
A woman of incredible substance and unwavering determination, Shea provided thousands of kids, families, seniors and veterans with the gift of better
vision through Angels for Sight. Hamilton founded Angels for Sight (angelsforsight.vision) because she knew that by providing vision care and eyewear for children that she was ensuring that they would thrive and be able to lead us into tomorrow.
She also sincerely felt that for a community to be healthy and whole, it must be inclusive sharing love and concern for all its members especially seniors and veterans.
Shea moved “heaven and earth” and a lot of governmental agencies, politicians, corporate leaders, and everyday people to bring her “vision” to fruition.
From doing vision screenings and dispensing non-prescription reading glasses on Skid Row to hosting annual vision events for Veterans and enlisting a long list of vision professionals to staff countless vision linics for kids and gifting them glasses (with cool designer frames of course), Shea was tireless and unre-
lenting in her pursuit to help others.
When we open the new Angels for Sight Clinic in Long Beach later this year, everything will need to be perfect, not for the distinguished guests and donors, but for all the people in the community who she had pledged to serve. It will be the ultimate celebration of a life well lived and a woman who will be missed, but never forgotten.
Hamilton touched so many people during her lifetime, leaving an indelible imprint on their hearts. Her Angels for Sight family would like to extend an invitation to everyone who loved her to join all of us as we celebrate and share memories of our dear friend and mentor.
We encourage all of those who attend to wear something BLUE which symbolizes all the things that were dear to Shea— faith, imagination, inspiration, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, and intelligence.

the tobacco industry has continued to introduce new non-menthol products that still pose significant health risks.
No Menthol Sunday serves as a reminder to prioritize Black health and well-being. By raising awareness of the dangers of all tobacco products, including the new non-menthol flavors, African Americans can make informed decisions about health and advocate for comprehensive regulations and policies that prioritize public health and prevent the tobacco industry from targeting marginalized groups even further. Nuggets pose a different challenge for Lakers
By Dennis J. Freeman LOS ANGELES (News4usonline)- The Los Angeles Lakers were able to beat the Golden State Warriors in the second round of the NBA playoffs largely because of their size. That won’t be the case against the Denver Nuggets as the two teams lock horns in the Western Conference Finals.

“FIRST of all, nothing but respect for their organization,” LeBron James said after scoring 30 points and drumming up nine points and nine assists as the Lakers clinched Game 6 and the series with a 122-101 win. “As far as the players, Steph [Curry], Draymond [Green], and Klay [Thompson], those are the guys I’ve had the most battles with, those are the guys I’ve been in the foxhole with…war with or against. Nothing but respect for them, for the franchise as well.
“For us, as a franchise, tonight in general, it was great to play one of the most efficient, one of our best games of the series, and it started because of the defensive mesh that we had. We defended at a high level, and when we do that we can be extremely good.”
Like the first two rounds of the postseason, the Lakers will hit the road for Game 1 and Game 2 before returning to Crypto.com Arena to play Game 3 and Game 4. The Lakers ambushed both the Memphis Grizzlies and the Warriors by stealing Game 1 in both series.
The Lakers beat both the

Grizzlies and Warriors in six games. The challenge for the Lakers against Denver is a fullsize difference. The Lakers won’t have the experience edge against the Nuggets as they did against a very immature Memphis team.
Their size won’t bother Denver’s frontline as they did against the very undersized Golden State team. For one, the Nuggets have center Nikola Jokic, probably the NBA’s most unstoppable force offensively.
Jokic is a two-time league regular season MVP, and is a nightmare to face.
Just ask the Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns. Both the Timberwolves and the Suns encountered the best of the best in Jokic. So don’t expect Lakers forward Anthony Davis running around chasing guards out on the perimeter. If he does that, Jokic may go for 60 points every game. Davis and the Lakers got away with

that scheme against the smaller Golden State team.
“I just think this is what this league is about. The fewer the teams, the tougher the matchups, the more skilled the players,” said Lakers head coach Darvin Ham. “Talk about [a] two-time MVP with a wellbalanced squad, hungry, great synergy, great chemistry, great ability, athleticism, shooting, all the above. We’re going to have our work cut out for us, but, you know, they have to guard us, too.”
That strategy won’t work against the Nuggets. With Golden State not really having a real scoring threat in the paint, Jokic will pose all kinds of problems for Davis and the Lakers.

What’s the difference for the Lakers against the Nuggets now? Health. Jokic and Denver were short-handed against Los Angeles in 2020. The explosive Porter was injured and could not play against the Lakers. The Nuggets came into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.
The Lakers are the No. 7 seed, yet Darvin Ham’s team found a way to knock off both Memphis and Golden State. The Lakers are not going to intimidate and manhandle the Nuggets the way they did against the Grizzlies and the Warriors. Look, Porter and Murray are coming, and they’re coming strong.

That means that Austin Reaves, Dennis Schroder, and Lonnie Walker IV are going to have to figure out how to guard and slow down Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, and Michael Porter Jr. on their own most of the time. Good luck. Davis is going to have his hands full trying to stop Jokic.
And unlike the Warriors, a team that was limited in what it could do down low, Gordon, Murray, and Porter gave the Nuggets sure offensive firepower. These two teams met up in the 2020 Western Conference Finals with the Lakers prevailing with an easy 4-1 advantage.

The Nuggets are looking to avenge that 2020 defeat to the Lakers in the conference championship. The Lakers will have the advantage if they walk into Denver’s arena and win one or two games played up there. If the Nuggets go up 2-0, the Lakers are cooked. The series will be determined by the first two games.
The undoing of the Warriors was a tool essential to Golden State winning four NBA titles: the 3-point shot. The Warriors made just 13 of 48 attempts from three-point land in Game 6, an underwhelming 27 percent. The loss was hard to swallow for Curry, who poured in 32 points in a losing effort in Game 6.
“You’re disappointed, shellshocked that it’s over,” Curry said. “You pour so much into every season, but coming off of last year, trying to defend and give ourselves a chance to keep advancing. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www. qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the trustee: CA-22-951062-NJ. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an "eligible tenant buyer," you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an "eligible bidder," you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 916-939-0772, or visit this internet website http://www. qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-22-951062-NJ to find the date on which the trustee's sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a
bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee's sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee's sale. If you think you may qualify as an "eligible tenant buyer" or "eligible bidder," you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ is a decent watch
By Bob GarverIn between “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Star-)lording over the competition and “Fast X” running over anything in its path comes “Book Club: The Next Chapter.” This film’s marketing department looked at a lineup of second-tier holidays and noticed that nothing was opening the weekend of Mother’s Day, so this got slotted in. It’s as good a release strategy as any – it’s not like there was some better weekend to release this dreck - but I fear the only bonding children will be doing with their mothers while watching this movie is commiserating over how stupid it is.
IDID not watch the entirety of “Book Club” from 2018, but I did catch some highlights to prepare for this film. The premise was that a group of four female friends all read “Fifty Shades of Grey” and were inspired to take some initiative in their lives. Widow Diane (Diane Keaton) decided that it was okay to pursue a relationship with Mitchell (Andy Garcia). Married Carol (Mary Steenbergen) rekindled her romance with husband Bruce (Craig T. Nelson). Divorcee Sharon (Candace Bergen) decided to give online dating an open-ended try. And maneater Vivian (Jane Fonda) decided that old flame Arthur (Don Johnson) was Mr. Right. In the time between movies, Diane has moved in with Mitchell, Carol lost her restaurant to the pandemic (and nearly lost Bruce to a heart attack), Sharon retired from her federal judgeship, and most importantly, Vivian accepted a marriage proposal from Arthur. The ladies go to Italy for
an elaborate bachelorette party. They go shopping, crack PG-13-friendly sex jokes, and practically deplete the country of its wine supply. I don’t think money or expense is mentioned once. In fact, the entire movie seems like little more than an excuse for the cast and crew to enjoy Italy themselves, a theory confirmed by the vacation-y photos that play over the credits.
Inconvenience finally rears its head when the group’s
bags get stolen. The ashes of Diane’s husband were in that bag, as she had planned to spread them on the trip. Other storylines include Sharon having a fling with a philosophy professor (Hugh Quarshie, admittedly the movie’s best surprise – the main can sing!) and running afoul of a local police officer (Vincent Riotta), Carol meeting up with an old boyfriend (Giancarlo Giannini), and Vivian questioning if she wants to go through with
the marriage. I know the movie is ostensibly about the bachelorette party, but let’s just say this isn’t the kind of movie that doesn’t end with a gorgeous destination wedding.

The movie is essentially a cross between “Sex and the City” and “Mamma Mia!” (readers expecting me to compare it to another movie, I’m getting there, I assure you) with all the wealth/travel porn and gentle sexual humor. Some of the jokes are

truly painful. A typical scene: A waiter tells Carol, “The chef would like to show you his cucina.” “His ‘what?’” Anybody with common sense can tell that he means “kitchen” based on context, but not the characters in this movie. That’s why it doesn’t work nearly as well as “80 for Brady.”
I take back what I said earlier about there not being a better weekend for “Book Club: The Next Chapter.” A better weekend would be one far, far, removed from that similar film – at least six months away instead of three. It’s not so much that there’s only room for one movie about four senior women (one of whom is played by Jane Fonda), it’s that the other movie was so funny and heartfelt that it draws even more attention to the laziness of this one. I hope you all had a happy Mother’s Day and did something more fulfilling than seeing this lousy movie.
Grade: C-
“Book Club: The Next Chapter” is rated PG-13 for some strong language and suggestive material. Its running time is 107 minutes.
