After one day of workers walking off the job and picketing in front of all 23 of its schools, those running the Cal State University (CSU) system got some sense and saw this was a bad look.

O, with a bunch of classes being cancelled and students not occupying campus space, CSU reached an agreement with the California Faculty Association (CFA). The one-day strike by CFA members was intended to go five days.

The strike has been called off and is now officially over. CSU sent

out an email late Monday night on Jan. 22, saying an agreement has been reached and that students are advised to look for messages from their instructors regarding adjustments to their classes.

“I am extremely pleased and deeply appreciative that we have reached common ground with CFA that will end the strike immediately,” said CSU Chancellor Mildred García. “The agreement enables the CSU to fairly compensate its valued, world-class faculty while protecting the university system’s long-term financial sustainability.

Compton College presidential scholar achieves academic success

Compton College 2023 graduate Shyanne Bradley wants others to know that even in times of crisis, one can always change their circumstances. “I’m just like anyone else that is indecisive about going to school but I want to emphasize that even as a mom, attending college is possible. It’s harder, but possible,” said Bradley.

Investigators arrest serial takeover robbery crew

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department Major Crimes Bureau (MCB) learned of an armed robbery series of “7-11” stores in the cities of Compton, Carson, Lakewood, Signal Hill, Long Beach, and Los Angeles, that occurred over a three-day period.

MCB investigators worked

with LASD Station detectives, Los Angeles Police Department, Long Beach Police Department and Signal Hill Police Department regarding their robbery investigations.

On Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, a Carson Station deputy walked in on a robbery in progress at a “7-11” in Carson.

He was able to safely detain

four subjects and recover a replica semi-automatic firearm (BB-gun) used during the robbery.

On the same day, LAPD investigators served a search warrant in Los Angeles and detained two additional male juveniles involved in the robbery series. n Series, see page 3

California Becomes First State to Break Down Black Employee Data by Ethnicity Antonio Ray Harvey they can choose not to identify.

Holden introduced Assem| California Black Media As of Jan. 1, California became the first state in the nation to disaggregate data for its Black population by ethnic lineage. Thanks to a bill authored by Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena).

OLDEN is a member of the California Legilslative Black Caucus.

A California Department of Human Resource (CalHR) questionnaire requests newly or rehired employees to voluntarily self-identify their race, ethnicity and gender for the state to track and evaluate equal employment opportunities and non-discriminatory employment practices more accurately.

“For the first time, the descendants of our ancestors, people in my family and the families of over 2 million Californians, the overwhelming majority of Black California, will see our community represented and counted among the very important data our state collects, starting among current and future state employees,” said Chris Lodgson, a member of Coalition for Just and Equitable (CJEC).

CJEC is a statewide organization comprised of various associations, community groups, and individuals united by a commitment to fight for reparations and reparative justice for descendants of enslaved Black American men and women.

Applicants now have the option to check boxes under Black or African American that declare them a descendent of persons who were enslaved in the United States, or not a descendant of persons who were enslaved in the United States, including African Black and Caribbean Black. They can also identify by marking “descendant status is unknown” or

bly Bill (AB) 1604, the Upward Mobility Act in January 2022.

The legislation requires the state to breakdown the data of state employees by ethnic origin.

Furthermore, AB 1604, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September 2022, provides state workers with greater opportunity to move upward within state service through improvements and best practices in processes for hiring, recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce.

The new disaggregation mandate is designed to help spot irregularities such as disparities in income, health care outcomes, career development and state agencies' leadership.

Holden had previously pushed legislation to promote mobility for people of color in California’s civil services system and require diversity on state boards and commissions.

Newsom vetoed AB 105 in October 2021, the legislative forerunner to AB 1604, which Holden also introduced.

Newsom said in an October 2021 letter that AB 105 had “unintended consequences” and “elements of the bill conflict with existing constitutional requirements, labor agreements, and current data collection efforts.”

When Holden was appointed chair of the Assembly Committee on Appropriations in January 2022 by then-Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood), he reintroduced the legislation as AB 1604.

AB 1604 resembles legislation that requires data from other racial groups. In September 2016, former Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 1726 into law, requiring the state Department of Public Health to disaggregate data it collects by ethnicity or ancestry for Native Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific Islander.

The question of identity became front-and-center in state government decision-making

For the first time, the descendants of our ancestors, people in my family and the families of over 2 million Californians, the overwhelming majority of Black California, will see our community represented and counted among the very important data our state collects, starting among current and future state employees when the California Reparations Task Force elected a lineage-based framework to determine eligibility for reparations. The nine-member panel decided that compensation should be limited to descendants of enslaved or free Black people whose ancestors were in the United States by the end of the 19th century.

That narrow 5-4 task force decision overrode a model for determining eligibility that is race-based.

Lodgson said that he believes the lineage-based arrangement will help Black Americans self-identify with their heritage in this country on the heels of Black History Month.

In August 2023, Sen. Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) introduced Senate Bill (SB) 490 that would amend Title 2 of

the state government code to establish a new state agency called the California American Freedman Affairs Agency (CAAFAA).

That agency would be responsible for managing the reparations process for Black Californians and determining eligibility under the lineage-based structure set up by the state’s reparations task force.

“The first in the nation California Reparations Task Force re-affirmed the intent of the law that created it when it said descendants of persons enslaved in the U.S. would be the community eligible for Reparations,” Lodgson said. “The next step would be to collect information on which Californians are within this community and set up a way for the

state to help people show that they’re eligible.”

According to a May 14, 2021, Pew Research Center report, Black and Hispanic adults were more likely than White adults to say their origins are central to their identity and that they feel a strong connection to their family’s cultural roots.

On Jan. 18, 2024, PEW released data that the Black population in the U.S. has grown by 32% since 2000, rising from 36.2 million then to 47.9 million in 2022. In addition, the number of people self-identifying as another race in addition to Black has increased nearly 254% since 2000.

In 2022, there were 5.1 million Black immigrants in the U.S., up from 2.4 million in 2000, according to PEW’s analysis of Census Bureau data. Immigrants accounted for 11% of the Black population in 2022, up from 7% in 2000.

Race-based reparations would have stretched the eligibility pool for reparations to include anyone in California who identifies as Black as opposed to Californians with a direct connection to a person who was enslaved in the United States.

According to the California Department of Finance’s July 2023 report, just over 39 million people reside in California. The Black/African American populations consist of 2,223,654 people (5.64%) in California. With a growing Black immigrant population across the country, Lodgson said that the disaggregated data being collected in California can serve as a model for the rest of the country.

“This historic change is the result of the hard work of Black Americans, all volunteers, who come from outside of politics and yet were able to make something big happen,” Lodgson said. “This is a testament to what each of us can do. Just as important as anything else, as one of my colleagues recently shared, you can’t fix a problem if you don’t see a problem.”

Supervisor Janice Hahn, Metro, and local leaders unveil new name for rail line Supervisor Janice Hahn, LA Metro leadership, and a coalition of local leaders, unveiled the “Southeast Gateway Line” as the new name for the light rail line that will be built from Downtown Los Angeles through Southeast LA and the Gateway Cities to Artesia.

HE project has long been known as the West Santa Ana Branch Transit Corridor—a name that has confused residents and elected leaders

alike. Supervisor Hahn has said that the bad name has prevented the project from getting the attention and funding it deserves.

The “Southeast Gateway Line” won of a six-month renaming contest launched by Supervisor Hahn in partnership with LA Metro. Over 1,100 people submitted name ideas and 4,500 voted for their favorites.

“This rail line is going to be revolutionary for communities in Southeast LA and the Gateway Cities, but its bad name has held this project back,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “I wanted to empower the future riders to pick a new name for this train – something they can connect with and that will help us de-

liver this project. The Southeast Gateway Line has the support of the people and this new name brings us one huge step closer to making it a reality.”

On Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, the last subject, a female juvenile, turned herself in to MCB investigators at the Lakewood Sheriff Station.

All subjects/suspects were transported to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall pending court proceedings. The first suspect was detained for 12 counts of robbery with 6 additional counts of minor in possession of a firearm. The second suspect was detained for 9 counts of robbery. Suspect No. 3 was detained for 7 counts of robbery.

The fourth suspect was detained for 9 counts of robbery.

The fifth suspect was detained for 2 counts of robbery and 1 count of minor in possession of a firearm. Suspect No. 6 was detained for 9 counts of robbery.

The seventh and final suspect was detained for 5 counts of robbery.

During their investigation, MCB investigators, working with Compton Station detectives, learned Subject No. 6 was involved in a burglary at the “Ruben’s Bakery & Mexican Food,” in Compton.

During that incident, on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, a vehicle was driven through the front door of the business which allowed entry to approximately 100 individuals, who ransacked

the business. Suspect No. 6 was additionally detained for his role in that incident.

The investigation is ongoing to determine if these subjects are related to other robberies that have recently occurred in Los Angeles or surrounding jurisdictions.

Residents should call 911 if a life-threatening emergency is detected and/or their local police business line if a suspicious person or vehicle is observed. The MCB can be contacted via e-mail at BRTF@ LASD.org for tips, questions, or concerns.

The LASD MCB BurglaryRobbery Task Force (BRTF) was formed over ten years ago to combat the ever-increasing trend of organized crews who are committing residential burglaries along with violent robbery crime trends.

Residents and business owners are reminded to secure their properties, be aware of suspicious and unusual persons or vehicles, and to alert their local law enforcement immediately if suspicious activity is observed.

(StatePoint) With only 8% of children and 21% of adults reporting receipt of the 2023-24 COVID-19 vaccine, less than half the population reporting receipt of a flu vaccine and just 20% of adults 60 and over reporting receipt of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine, it’s no surprise that rates of respiratory illnesses are at elevated levels this season.

“

R E S P I R AT O RY illness is all too common, particularly during colder months when people spend more time indoors and germs can spread more easily,” says Dr. Albert Rizzo, chief medical officer, American Lung Association.

“Fortunately, there are many strategies for staying healthy.”

The American Lung Association is sharing everyday habits you can adopt to help avoid infection, along with information about available tools to help prevent severe illness: • Wash your hands.

Regularly wash your hands with soap and water. If soap and water isn’t available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

• Cover your cough and sneeze. Stop the spread of

infection by using a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze.

You can use your elbow if a tissue is not available.

• Keep your distance. Close contact with a person who is sick increases exposure to respiratory droplets containing a virus. Maintain your distance whenever possible.

• Stay home. In addition to staying home when you are sick, try your best to keep your distance from household members to help prevent them from getting sick.

• Clean and disinfect. When someone is sick at home, cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces is especially important to help prevent the spread of illness.

• Consider wearing a mask.

Wearing a mask helps provide protection against circulating viruses, and can help protect people at higher risk of serious illness. Effectiveness does vary depending on the virus and mask quality.

• Get up to date. Talk to your doctor to see if you and your family members are up to date on vaccinations. Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. RSV vaccination is recommended for adults 60 years of age and older after having a discussion with their healthcare provider.

Maternal RSV vaccination is recommended as an option to help prevent babies from

developing severe RSV illness and is given during weeks 32-36 of pregnancy during September through January.

COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.

• Learn more about monoclonal antibodies. If you have an infant or are an expectant parent, ask your healthcare provider about a monoclonal antibody injection to help provide protection against severe RSV illness. This preventative antibody is recommended for infants under 8 months of age and babies between 8-19 months at increased risk of severe RSV. • Get tested, if needed. If you do get sick, testing can help your healthcare provider determine which virus you have, and inform next steps such as treatment. Talk to your healthcare provider about testing right away if you get sick, especially if you are at increased risk for severe illness.

• Seek treatment. Antiviral medications available for flu and COVID-19 may lower your risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death if started early and within the recommended treatment window.

I’m not diabetic but I am a sweet guy Dr. James L. Snyder want to know is my age.

Lately, I've been very tired. Which has nothing at all to do with my age.

Rather, it has everything to do with all these spam calls I get every day.

I

T seems most spam calls come during lunchtime when I’m eating. How dare they?

I would get calls daily telling me that my car warranty had expired and that I could remedy that situation by signing up with their warranty program. They have everything I need, so they say. What I really need is an Apple Fritter. Nobody’s ever offered me that.

One thing they did not have was my fist in their nose.

But that's another story.

Then there are those Medicare calls wanting to upgrade my coverage at no cost to me.

One of the first things they

I get so sick and tired of this that after a while I came up with my story.

"So, how old are you sir?"

My response, "Well, I tell you, that is a difficult answer because every year my age changes, and I get confused, and I can't keep up with my actual age."

There's a chuckle on the other end of the line and the person says, "So, when is your birthday?"

Again, my response is, "Well, my birthday is the day I celebrate being born."

I sense a little frustration on the other line, and then they say, "Tell me what day your birthday is on."

"Well, one year it’s on a Tuesday, and the next year it's on a Thursday, and then it's on a Saturday, and boy, I can't keep up with it."

Finally, I hear what I've been waiting for: a click from the other end of the line.

I'm often confused when someone calls me and wants

me to tell them when they can deliver some medical equipment that will not cost me anything. It will be absolutely free.

One person asked for my Social Security number, so I gave him 123-45-6789. That has to be somebody's security number, but it certainly isn't mine.

Then the latest thing is that some spammer calls me and tells me that they are sending me some medical equipment to help me with my diabetes.

"So, sir," the spammer said, "do you have diabetes?"

Why in the world do they call me thinking I have diabetes? Where are they getting that information? I know they

haven't talked to my doctor about it.

Then I had an idea. The next time a spammer called me and asked if I had diabetes, I said, "I'm not diabetic, but I am a sweet guy."

After doing that several times, one person angrily said, "Are you hitting on me?"

"No," I said, "but I sure would like to hit you."

There was a pause in those annoying calls and I had an opportunity to think about a Bible verse.

David said in Psalm 18:3, “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.”

My thought was, no call from me could ever annoy God. He is waiting for me to call upon him. Whenever I call upon God, He is anxious to respond to my need.

God doesn’t look on me as a spammer, but a claimer of His amazing grace.

Continued devotion to the people’s City Clerk emanates from my enthusiasm to serve others in performing the duties of a public servant.

For 21 years, I served the City of Compton as its Chief Deputy City Clerk.

In January, 2023, the Compton Community and City Councilmembers in solidarity, appointed me City Clerk. To date, this decision has proven to be the right choice for the City of Compton.

I HAVE IMPLEMENTED: • A business model labeled as ‘Looking Forward’ that serves to progress lasting solutions to challenges and problems, versus placing a hurried reactionary quick fix.

• As City Clerk I consistently employ ethical standards and integrity that adhere to the Elections Code, Ralph M. Brown Act, City Charter, Compton Municipal Code, Political Reform Act and Public Records Act, when governing the office of the City Clerk.

• I work with local organizations that embody positivity for our community including, but not limited to The National Association for Equal Justice In America, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Local 2325 American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) .

The Compton Community is extremely worthy of a City Clerk that serves efficiently and ethically.

The new Compton High slowly coming into fruition The new Compton High School opening is just one year away, as the new campus is scheduled to open in 2025. The current construction is moving quickly, with close to 150 staff working onsite daily to complete the job.

ACH DAY, the site is getting closer to becoming what it’s supposed to be - a working campus, educating Compton’s scholars.

The multi-year construction project began in 2019 with the demolition of the old school buildings, and the

final flattening of the original school structure taking place in July of 2021. The construction of the new facility has been in the works since then.

Drive by the construction site at the corner of Alondra Boulevard and S. Acacia Avenue, you’ll see several buildings looking more and more habitable, rising above the surrounding property fences.

Some of the most recent work on the academic building includes continued roof construction and installation of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire sprinkler lines. Windows, doors, HVAC ducts, bathroom tile, drywall, ceiling grid, and lighting is being added throughout the main building.

In addition, there’s ongo-

ing work included the installation of the structural steel columns and beams to build the backbone of the Gym building. Current ongoing work includes installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing lines and installation of the roof.

Construction of the Performing Arts Center is well underway now, with the footings and grade beams being added to the building’s foundation. This work includes the installation of the underground electrical and plumbing lines and installation of rebar, concrete forms, bulkheads, and anchor bolts to shape, hold, and limit the concrete on pour days.

Current work on the pool includes installing the plumb-

ing and pool bottom reinforcement with the concrete forms and rebar to shape, hold, and limit the concrete on pour days.

The outdoor tennis and basketball courts are taking shape, with installation of the power conduit for the tennis court lighting, trenching for drains and installing the concrete forms and rebar to shape, hold, and limit the concrete and flatwork on pour days.

The new Compton High School represents the first new high school facility to be built in almost a decade in the greater Los Angeles area. The soon-to-be opened campus will replace the old Compton High School, which was more than 100 years old.

The construction project, supported by construction partners Design Firm DLR Group, building project management consulting firm Cumming, construction firm Swinerton, and a host of others, including building trades and small businesses.

The district’s “Built by Compton” Initiative has been working to open doors to opportunity on the project and in the trades for local workers and small businesses. Measure S, which is funding the construction, was passed by Compton voters in 2015.

The new Compton High School, set to welcome its first cohort of students in 2025, will feature a 31-acre high school, 1,800 students, and a 36,534 square feet gymnasium.

Teamsters members did not participate in the faculty strike. In a release put out by

CSU, CFA members asked for a 12 % raise, which the statewide education system said would cost $312 million.

Bradley currently works at Long Beach Memorial Hospital as a patient care assistant. “My goal is to further my career opportunities and advancement, and to facilitate becoming a registered nurse,”

she said. Helping people has always been a passion of mine. I want my children to understand how helping people can make such a big difference in other’s lives.”

She hopes to have a future career as a registered nurse serving in an emergency room or specializing in wound care. As one who believes contingency plans are important, Bradley has applied to the nursing program at Compton College, as well as to transfer to one of the California State University campuses at

either Long Beach, Fullerton, or Los Angeles. This spring, she is taking classes in the Certified Nursing Assistant program at Compton College while she waits for her acceptance to a nursing program for fall 2024.

“To have Compton College in my corner has given me the push I need to be the best I can be, and I know I can continue to do so much more,” said Bradley. “I’m doing this for myself and my children so they can see that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

‘The Beekeeper’ tries to keep up

By Bob Garver Last week I wrote about “Mean Girls” and the problem of having seen a version of the movie before, which made it too familiar and predictable. I meant it in a very literal sense – there was a 2004 movie called “Mean Girls,” written by Tina Fey, with basically the same characters and story (though no musical numbers, those were a nice addition).

OW I’m making the same complaint about “The Beekeeper,” but in a figurative sense. There is no other movie called “The Beekeeper” that resembles this movie or involves the same people, nor is this movie technically based on any other intellectual property. And yet you’ll know what I mean when I say that I’ve seen this movie so many times before.

Jason Statham plays Adam Clay, a drifter given work by the kind Eloise (Phylicia Rashad). Online scammers take every penny of Eloise’s savings, including over $2 million earmarked

for charity. Eloise’s FBI agent daughter Verona (Emmy Raver-Lampman) gets involved and has Clay arrested.

He complies with the arrest, but this is the kind of character that only complies because he cares about Verona’s peace of mind and not because he is actually conceding power. He’s soon released,

and while he has no hard feelings toward Verona, he does want to shut down the scammers permanently.

They don’t know it, but they’ve made an enemy of the world’s deadliest assassin.

Clay starts out burning down the call center where the scammers worked, but of course the path of

destruction doesn’t stop there. He works his way up to the highest levels of the operation, inching evercloser to… “mastermind” isn’t really the word here, but figurehead Derek Danforth (Josh Hutcherson). Danforth has the help of his powerful mother (Jemma Redgrave) and a former CIA director (Jeremy Irons), who’s smart enough to have a great deal of respect for Clay.

Verona is assigned to bring down Clay for his unlawful actions, and she’s really good at figuring out where he’s going to go next. She’s not good at knowing what to do with this information once she figures it out, but no one else on the law enforcement side is doing any better.

It seems the bad guys kicked a hornets’ nest and angered a guy that was once assigned to protect the hive that is the United States. Also he had an amateur beekeeping/honey collecting operation in the barn where he lived.

The movie makes every bee joke and metaphor it can muster, because the beekeeping gimmick is the only thing separating this movie from hundreds like it where an apparent nobody or everyman turns

out to be an unstoppable action hero. Ten years ago, Liam Neeson was the face of this genre, though it’s not like Hollywood hasn’t been mining this formula for decades.

“The Beekeeper” doesn’t do too much to stand out from the swarm, but it’s enjoyable at times. Statham is his usual charming self, some of the action set pieces are pleasingly implausible, and the scummy bad guys are fun to punish. If you’re looking for nothing more than a movie where the most fun comes from speculating if the villain of the moment will get gunned down or blown up, this might be the movie for you.

I’m looking for something where I can get a little more invested in the characters and story, which is why I can’t recommend it. I know this movie probably wants me to give it the next letter grade up, but I’m afraid it will have to settle for a…

Grade: C “The Beekeeper” is rated R for strong violence throughout, pervasive language, some sexual references and drug use.

Oscar nominations come for Brooks, Brown, Wright, and Domingo The Academy Awards have flushed out its Oscars list. Those included as nominees this year are some of the best in Hollywood.

Both Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown were tapped for Oscar nominations for their incredible work in “American Fiction.”

Brown was nominated for a performance by an actor in a supporting role. Wright earned his Academy Award nomination for a performance by an actor in a leading role as the star in “American Fiction.”

Danielle Brooks, who dazzled audiences as Sofia in “The Color Purple,” picked up her Oscar nominations for a performance by an actress in a supporting role. Domingo, who also starred in “The Color Purple,” was actually nominated in the lead actor category for portraying civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the film, “Rustin.”
