Protecting lives on the road during National Safety Month and beyond

Consequences of Distracted Driving and Speeding disproportionately impact Black lives

June marks the beginning of summer and the observance of National Safety Month.

The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and Caltrans are calling on all drivers to prioritize safety and help raise awareness about current dangerous driving behavior and its disproportionate impact on Black communities in California and across the U.S.

ACCORDING to the latest projections from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 4,400 people were killed in traffic crashes in California in 2022, or 12 people every day. A disproportionate

number of those deaths affect Black communities and people walking and cycling. People outside of vehicles do not have the same protections as people riding inside vehicles.

A recent study published by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that, on a national level, Black people experience a passenger vehicle fatality rate 73% higher than their white counterparts, with the highest overall traffic fatality rate per mile traveled and across all modes of transportation, including walking, cycling and driving. In California, Black pedestrians have a 65% higher fatality rate compared to white pedestrians.

In an era where screens dominate our attention, distractions behind the wheel have become an alarming issue. Using a phone to dial, talk or text doubles the risk of a driver getting into a crash. Sending or

receiving a text message takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. In 2020, 3,142 Americans were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers.

Other dangerous driving behaviors like speeding have also become increasingly normalized. Whether it involves exceeding the posted speed limit, driving too fast for con-

ditions or racing, speeding was a factor in 29% of all national traffic fatalities in 2021. In California, 1,509 people were killed in speeding-related crashes in 2021.

To address the dangers of distracted driving, speeding and the disproportionate impacts each dangerous behavior has on Black lives, the OTS and Caltrans launched a callto-action campaign that aims to establish a strong safety culture in California. You can join the Go Safely Movement and become a traffic safety champion by taking a short Community Call to Action survey to share what issues you are experiencing in your everyday travels. Your answers will assist the OTS and Caltrans in strengthening connections with communities, providing access to resources, and promoting traffic safety across transportation systems.

Civil rights attorney and child advocate Areva Martin and Special Needs Network celebrate 15th year charity event

LOS ANGELES -- The vibrant Beverly Hills Hilton was abuzz with excitement as civil rights attorney and child advocate Areva Martin and Special Needs Network (SNN) presented the 15th Annual Pink Pump Affair, an annual signature charity event. The affair, held on Sunday, May 21, 2023, brought together more than 500 influential women and men from entertainment, government, media, non-profits and business to celebrate remarkable individuals who have ignited powerful growth and brought about extraordinary change throughout Southern California.

Clad in striking power pink attire, hundreds of professionals converged for this highly anticipated springtime extravaganza. The day was packed with activities, including a captivating fashion show, a champagne reception, a live auction, and the prestigious Women of Distinction awards ceremony.

This year’s event welcomed

acclaimed actress, director, and producer Salli Richardson Whitfield, known for her notable performances in “I Am Legend,” “Eureka,” “Queen Sugar,” and “Luke Cage,” as one of the esteemed guest speakers.

Joining her was Alfre Woodard, an Oscar-nominated and multiple Emmy-winning actress and activist, recognized for her roles in “Clemency,”

“Cross Creek,” “LA Law,” and

“Hill Street Blues.”

The Women of Distinction awards ceremony shone a spotlight on exceptional trailblazers who have left an indelible mark in their respective fields.

California State Controller Malia Cohen was honored with the Trailblazer Award for her outstanding contributions. Additionally, entrepreneurs Kerri Harper-Howie and Nicole Harper-Rawlins, fondly

known as the “Harper sisters,” received the Empowerment Award in recognition of their achievements as owners of 18 McDonald’s franchises in the Los Angeles area.

Setting the stage for an unforgettable experience, the event featured award-winning KCBS-TV2 anchor Pat Harvey as the mistress of ceremonies, effortlessly guiding the audience through the day’s proceedings. Adding an extra touch of charm was the charismatic Donnell Turner from ABC’s “General Hospital,” who took on the role of the celebrity auctioneer, elevating the excitement during the live auction.

The Women of Distinction awards have a rich history of honoring exceptional women who have left an indelible impact. Past honorees include celebrated actresses Jenifer Lewis, Loretta Devine, Holly Robinson Peete, Tisha Campbell, Niecy Nash, Angela Bassett, and distinguished figures such as Senator Barbara Box-

er and Vice President Kamala Harris.

This year’s event featuring swag bags filled with fabulous goodies and a live silent auction offering incredible items such as sold-out concert tickets for Grammy winners Janet Jackson and Ludacris at the Hollywood Bowl, a week-long summer vacation stay in Martha’s Vineyard, and tickets to see Grammy winner Usher in concert, among many other enticing options.

Proceeds from A Pink Pump Affair will play a crucial role in helping SNN achieve its vision with the opening of the landmark Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities (C.A.D.D.). Located on the campus of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital in the Watts/Willowbrook community of South Los Angeles, C.A.D.D. will serve as a centralized hub where all programs and services can converge under one roof, amplifying the impact of SNN’s work in the South Los Angeles community.

L.A. Community College District honors students with unique graduation ceremony

LOS ANGELES —

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) held its second Mi Gente Graduation Celebration at Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC) on June 3, 2023, honoring all graduates of Latino heritage.

THE Mi Gente Graduation Celebration provided an opportunity for students, their families, and friends to celebrate their achievements in a culturally relevant way

that honors and emphasizes the rich tapestry of Latino culture represented in the district.

Nearly 60 percent of all LACCD students identify as Latino, making up the largest demographic group on its nine campuses.

“For so many of our Latino students, graduating from our colleges is more than just a diploma—it’s a source of pride for their entire families,” said LACCD Board Trustee Gabriel Buelna, Ph.D. “As the son of Mexican immigrant parents who emphasized education and our heritage, I know firsthand how meaningful these days are. It is my honor to be here at the second annual Mi

Gente Graduation Celebration and congratulate this new generation of leaders and good citizens.”

The ceremony, which took place between 10 a.m. and

1 p.m. at LATTC, the oldest of LACCD’s nine campuses, opening its doors in 1925, was emceed by actor, director, and screenwriter Richard Montoya, well-known

as a co-founding member of San Francisco performance troupe Culture Clash. Montoya has a history of activism and pro-education advocacy; his father, Jose Montoya, was a poet and activist from Sacramento who once served as the city’s poet laureate.

After introductions, the ceremony began with an energetic musical performance featuring the Aztec dancers “Mexicas in Aztlan” and the sounds of Mariachi Estrella de Jalisco. Board Trustee Gabriel Buelna, Ph.D., shared a message from the board, and Chancellor Francisco C. Rodriguez, Ph.D., delivered a

Study reveals that Blacks and Latinos at higher risk for type 2 diabetes

“We see a lot of Latino and Black people and sad to say, type 2 diabetes and its harmful effects are far too common with us,” said LaSalle Medical Associates CEO Dr. Albert Arteaga.”

THERE is an old saying that “You are what you eat.” And when it comes to what you eat and your chances of contracting type 2 diabetes, this is especially true.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, “You can inherit a predisposition for diabetes, a disease that disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities.” The FDA goes on to note that the death rate for Hispanics from diabetes is “50 percent higher than for non-Hispanic whites.”

The U.S. Department of

Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health research studies spanning the years 2018 and 2019 found that non-Hispanic Blacks were “twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to die from diabetes” and “2.5 times more likely to be hospitalized with diabetes and associated long-term complications than non-Hispanic whites.”

San Bernardino County’s population is 55.8 percent Hispanic or Latino and 9.4 percent Black or African American, per the United States Census Bureau’s July 2022 estimates. In Riverside County, the percentages are 51.6 for Hispanics or Latinos and 7.5 for Blacks or African Americans.

“We see a lot of Latino and Black people,” said LaSalle Medical Associates CEO Dr. Albert Arteaga, “and sad to say, type 2 diabetes and its harmful effects are far too common with us.”

Type 2 diabetes is a major health concern for the Inland Empire

and LaSalle Medical Associates works hard to address the problem.

Dr. Arteaga says, “Our physicians make it a point to discuss proper nutrition with patients they see who may be pre-diabetic or who have already been diagnosed with the disease.”

Several risk factors contribute to this problem and one of those is eating the wrong foods. Latino and African American

diets often include fatty pork, foods fried or cooked with lard or unhealthy shortenings and oils, and starchy vegetables like beans, corn, potatoes, chickpeas, and parsnips, not to mention lots of sugary soft drinks and juices.

Some foods are loaded with refined sugars that few people think as high in sugar, including barbecue sauces, ketchup, baked beans, tomato soups and sauces,

canned fruits and vegetables, salad dressings, and Asian-style sauces like Thai sweet chili and teriyaki. These, too, are often part of ethnic minority diets.

Now that the Covid pandemic has receded, LaSalle’s clinics are reaching out to encourage people to come in for preventive health screenings that include talking about diet and diabetes. “We see a lot of Latino and Black clients and we make sure that they get the facts about how important good nutrition is to their overall health and especially diabetes prevention and treatment,” said Dr. Arteaga.

“In addition to avoiding the bad foods, we recommend good ones: lean pork, chicken—especially with the skin off and roasted rather than fried, fish, and healthy veggies—spinach, kale, broccoli, beets, carrots, collard greens, cabbage, cucumbers, cauliflower, raw

May 29 was Memorial Day in the United States, and the long weekend that is traditionally observed with shared American remembrance made headlines again for the shared all-American epidemic of gun violence.

The nonprofit Gun Violence Archive, which keeps track of American gun violence incidents, noted there were at least 175 people killed and another 496 injured during the Memorial Day weekend, and 20 mass shootings in which four or more people were injured or killed.

THIS included the mass shooting on a crowded beachside promenade in Hollywood, Florida that injured nine people, including four children, the youngest just one year old. Other shootings happened during neighborhood or community conflicts. Many happened at home, with a family member’s own gun.

“I am thrilled to honor the tremendous accomplishments of our Latino students at LACCD’s second annual Mi Gente Graduation Celebration,” said Francisco C. Rodriguez, Ph.D., LACCD Chancellor. “As a first-generation English learner, the springboard of education changed the trajectory of my family and it can do so for our students and their families. I know firsthand

The Gun Violence Archive now calculates that more than 17,000 people have died so far this year in the U.S. from guns, including more than 100 children under age 12.

June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month, and June 2-4 is Wear Orange Weekend to join thousands of others across the country calling for an end to gun violence in all of its forms, including domestic violence, suicide, and city gun violence. The Wear Orange movement began in honor of Hadiya Pendleton, an honors student and drum majorette who was shot and killed on a Chicago playground in January 2013 just days after she had performed in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. As President Obama gave his State of the Union speech that year, he remembered Hadiya:

“She was 15 years old. She loved Fig Newtons and lip gloss . . . She was so good to her friends, they all thought they were her best friend. Just three weeks ago, she was here, in Washington, with her classmates, performing for her country at my inauguration. And a week later, she was shot and killed in a Chicago park after school, just a mile away from my house.”

As a sixth grader Hadiya had appeared in an anti-gang video to encourage other

young people to avoid gang violence, saying, “It’s your job as students to say ‘no’ to gangs and ‘yes’ to a great future.” Hadiya could have meant a future like her own; the talented high school sophomore was excelling at her college preparatory school, doing everything right, with the world ahead of her. But all that changed because of a gun. Wear Orange began on June 2, 2015, the day that would have been Hadiya’s 18th birthday. It is now observed nationally every year on the first Friday in June and the weekend that follows. It was Hadiya’s friends who originally chose to remember her by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.

Hadiya Pendleton deserved to be protected. She, and the thousands of other

children who have been killed by guns in our nation in the ten years since she died, deserved the freedom to grow up.

Last year, former First Lady Michelle Obama unveiled plans for the Hadiya Pendleton Winter Garden at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

Mrs. Obama said, “I never had the chance to meet Hadiya while she was alive, but after she died, I was able to spend some time with her loved ones. I learned about how she was an honor student, how much she loved music, how she loved going out to get ice cream with her friends. And the more I heard, the more I understood the extraordinary potential inside her—a potential that was stolen by the epidemic of gun violence.”

She continued: “Like me, Hadiya was raised by parents who wanted to give her opportunities they never had. They

signed her up for volleyball, cheerleading, and a dance ministry at church. They supported her education, and with their encouragement, she became a star student. From an early age, Hadiya’s parents made sacrifices to introduce her to opportunities throughout Chicago so that she could one day find her place in the world.”

Hadiya, who should be turning 26 right now, never got that chance. We must never tire of the really hard work demanded to transform the pervasive culture of violence and pervasive presence of guns in America. We must love our children more than the gun manufacturers and some NRA members love their guns. We must love our country enough to ensure the safety of our children and of all of us and demand the future free from gun violence that all of our children deserve.

how empowering it is when students feel represented and supported. Today, we celebrate our graduates and their bright futures.”

District college presidents and graduates from all nine campuses delivered remarks and personal, inspirational testimony that was interspersed with performances from Ballet Folklorico de El Salvador and the GAHFU Traditional Garifuna Drumming Ensemble.

The honored student speakers were Miriam Vargas from West Los Angeles College, Kathy Carrillo from East Los Angeles College, Lindsey Lopez from Los Angeles Valley College, Karla Pulgarin from Los Angeles City College,

Jennifer Herrera from Los Angeles Southwest College, Airam Solorzano from Los Angeles Harbor College, Ubalda Jasso from Los Angeles Pierce College, Gabriela Penuelas Pettibone from Los Angeles Mission College and Angel Romero from Los Angeles Trade Technical College.

The event also included an outdoor stage with the Los Angeles City College Jazz Ensemble and food featuring cuisine from various Latin American countries. After the graduate speeches and performances, Jauregui returned to the stage for a closing song, “Que Bonito Amor,” that concluded the cultural celebration of student success.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS:

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 683-2468 or visit this Internet Web site www.servicelinkasap.com, using the file number assigned to this case FHAR.278-025. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. For sales conducted after January 1, 2021: NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

How wrong I was about 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” When I saw the first trailer, I remember groaning about starting a fourth big-screen Spider-Man continuity when we were still in the middle of the Tom Holland version, hadn’t had a proper conclusion for the Andrew Garfield version, and weren’t far enough removed from the Tobey Maguire version.

THE live-action continuities eventually sorted themselves out, but more importantly, the animated “Spider-Verse” quickly became the best continuity of all. And with “Across the Spider-Verse,” it continues to be the best conti-

LOS ANGELES (News4usonline) – “A Soldier’s Play” hits you the way a Mike Tyson right uppercut would. It’s raw. It’s explosive. It penetrates. It comes out of nowhere with the full intention of taking you out of your comfort zone into a space of the unknown.

Tyson’s lethal uppercut shots when the former heavyweight boxer became champion of the world, would obliterate his opponents. The scathing dialogue in “A Soldier’s Play” would probably match what Tyson did in the ring.

What the late playwright Charles Fuller was able to do when he brought “A Soldier’s Play” to life in 1982 before it was later turned into a stirring big screen film called “A Soldier’s Story,” starring Howard Rollins, Adolph Caesar, and Denzel Washington, was create an unapologetic powerful take on Black men as soldiers.

nuity.

The new movie takes place about a year after the original.

Miles “Spider-Man” Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen “Spider-Woman” Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) have not seen each other since returning to their respective universes. Both struggle with family drama, namely the decision of whether or not to reveal their alter egos to their parents. Miles wants to tell his mother Rio (Luna Lauren Velez) and police lieutenant father Jefferson (Brian Tyree Henry), but that would mean admitting that he’s been lying and putting himself in danger with no intention of stopping. Gwen wants to tell her police captain father George (Shea Whigham), but that would mean admitting that she’s been lying, endangering herself, and responsible for the death of close friend Peter Parker (who in her universe was The Lizard).

Gwen tries to take her mind off things by joining a band (in an opening sequence that’s equal parts pulse-pound-

ing and head-bopping) and stopping villains that hop over from other universes. There’s still a big hole in the multiverse that nobody can close, so villains can get through, but so can other Spider-People, like the pregnant Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), anarchist Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), and the humorless Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac). The latter is the leader of the Spider-Society, which employs Spider-People across all universes. He reluctantly lets Gwen join the organization, though he’s concerned about her relationship with Miles, who is about to have a very important role to play in the fabric of the multiverse that can’t be compromised.

Miles is stressed with juggling school, his father’s upcoming promotion to captain, and Spider-Man business. Still, he’s delighted when Gwen pays his universe a visit, even though she’s there for other business and can’t stay for long. Her business ties into

a new villain called The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), whose gimmick is that he can create portals through space at will, a complex power that he doesn’t quite understand himself, but makes for a great stream of visual gags. Still, he’s destined to go from bumbler to serious threat in a real hurry, though the Spider-Society can’t stop him just yet for reasons that tie into that great responsibility for Miles.

I’m just skimming the surface of the story, which includes the return of Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), now married with a baby, and a lengthy trip to a universe where NYC and India combine into the city of Mumb-hattan. The action is exciting, the jokes are funny,

‘A Soldier’s Play’ delivers

The task of making “A Soldier’s Play” work and relevant today has been charged to Kenny Leon, the production’s director. Leon has taken the baton from Fuller and has hit the finish line with a closeout flurry with his take on “A Soldier’s Play.” “A Soldier’s Play” has been billed and hyped to be that production that is a must-see.

There’s a strong reason behind that. If you have sensitive ears then “A Soldier’s Play” is not for you. This is not a show to see for the faint of heart. Playing at the Ahmanson Theatre (Center Theatre Group) through June 23, “A Solder’s Play” brings the heat during many of its conversational scenes. That’s what’s good about it.

“A Soldier’s Play” is good old-fashioned storytelling. Perhaps the best thing about the Tony Award winning production is that each of the characters make you feel what they are going through.

Set in 1944 on a Louisiana

Army base, “A Soldier’s Play” has a plethora of topics it tries to hit head on. Fuller, and later Leon, do a masterful job of somehow bridging the murder of a top-ranked Black soldier into an incredibly compelling whodunit mystery.

Without going into fullblown spoiler alert, both the protagonist and hero are given an A grade for their performances. Norm Lewis, the first Black man to play Phantom in “Phantom of the Opera,” takes

the animation is stunning, and the pace is frantic. Plus there are literally hundreds of secret goodies hiding in every corner of the screen that are easy to miss on a first viewing, but if any movie this year is worth seeing more than once, it’s this one.

The movie ends on a cliffhanger and a setup for a future movie, much like the recent “Fast X.” But unlike that movie, I don’t feel like this movie was “sacrificed” to set up a more exciting movie down the line, it’s an entire feature in and of itself. That said, I’m actually skeptical of the upcoming “Beyond the Spider-Verse” because the ending of this one sets up some twists that represent some of my least-favorite conventions of comic book movies. “Across the Spider-Verse” never officially loses its footing, but it ends weirdly, by giving me the feeling that this series is about to plummet in quality.

Grade: B

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is rated PG for sequences of animated action violence, some language and thematic elements. Its running time is 140 minutes. Contact Bob Garver at rrg251@nyu.edu.

over the leading role as Capt. Richard Davenport.

It is Davenport’s responsibility to investigate the murder of Sgt. Vernon C. Waters (Eugene Lee) just outside an all-Black infantry unit. Lewis looms as an imposing presence as Capt. Davenport. A man of self-professed discipline, Capt. Davenport is stern and unshakable in his approach to investigating the death of Sgt. Waters. Capt.

Davenport has a no BS meter that seems to be running at all hours of the day. With a host of credits under his belt-on stage as well on the big screen-Lewis swallows up the stage as Capt. Davenport. Without question, Lewis is the man for the role of Capt. Davenport. But he has an equal in Lee. If there is one word to best describe Lee’s sensational portrayal of Sgt. Waters, it would be ferocious.

Sgt. Waters is a bully. He degrades them and constantly humiliates the soldiers under his command. He pushes his men

into near mutiny against him, even going to the length of educating them on who is and who is not fit to be part of the Negro race. It is such degradation that pits Sgt. Waters at odds with his men, especially with Pvt. First Class Melvin Peterson (Tarik Lowe).

Lee’s rapid-fire tonguewhipping of his soldiers eventually draw the ire of his men. And since Sgt. Waters is reviled, this leads to everybody under his watch automatically being hit with the suspect tag. Lee is brilliant as Sgt. Waters. He commands the stage with his villainous and self-righteous ways as well as Lewis does as Capt. Davenport.

In a way, both Capt. Davenport and Sgt. Waters are one of the same, except they are on opposite sides of the fence. They are both Black men serving in the U.S. military with the country’s in-your-face racism serving as a backdrop to this drama-laden tale.
