Members of Congress represent the people of their district in the United States Congress by holding hearings, as well as developing and voting on legislation. All bills must pass Congress before they can go to the President to be signed into law. This is an elected position.

The five-member Board of Supervisors is the governing body of the County of Los Angeles. Created by the state Legislature in 1852, the Board has executive, legislative and quasi-judicial roles.
Members are elected by voters in their respective districts and are limited to three four-year terms. This is an elected position.

The Senate has an additional responsibility which the Assembly does not share. It is responsible for the confirmation of hundreds of the officials nominated by the Governor for service in the executive branch. This procedure gives the Senate an extra “check and balance” in the way the Legislature's laws are enforced.
