TRACEE ELLIS ROSS, ANYA TAYLOR-JOY, AND EILEEN GU Give Me The T in

Tiffany & Co. has introduced three incredible women to usher in their latest “Give Me the T” campaign. A contemporary, storied vision that highlights the letter T in modern designs with brilliant pavé diamonds and 18K white gold. The exceptional craftsmanship the House is known for calls for celebration as they push forward new ways to share inspiring people at the forefront of their newest collections. “Growing up, I would often wander through the flagship store on Fifth Avenue imagining myself as a grown woman wear the bold elegance of Tiffany’s signature diamonds,” Ellis shares. “All these years later, to be the face of this iconic brand and to represent the T1 Collection is a dream come true. Shooting the campaign was a welcome moment of inspiration and glamour after the challenging year that we’ve all experienced.”

Taylor-Joy and Gu will continue in the Tiffany campaigns with “Knot Your Typical City” for an exclusive collection that will be releasing for fall in North America and then internationally next year. Set in the streets of Manhattan, the campaign will bring together the bustling scenery and the people that make New York — New York. Anya Taylor-Joy expresses, “I love jewelry that has symbolism in it. I love it to mean something to me. It doesn’t necessarily have to mean anything to anybody else, but I like to look down at my fingers and have a story.”

“Wearing a beautiful piece of jewelry, especially one that is meaningful or motivational in a personal sense, is an inexorable feeling,” shares Gu. “It’s empowering, inspiring, and exciting to express myself, to feel seen and heard without having to utter a single word. I’m obsessed with the balance between elegant simplicity and striking boldness that the new T1 Collection offers.”

A LOOK AT

JUNICHI ABE’s

KOLOR S/S 2022 Junichi Abe presents his latest collections in the pursuit of “the new style of minimalism.” While designs may carry a rather casual look, Abe always finds a way to create intricacies within each piece. Looking closely, you’ll see tapes, seams, overlooked elements that are only on the inside of a garment, but here they are used as a rather beautiful highlight on the outer surfaces. Along with the idea of bringing forth hidden features, the brand shares how it is applied to “the accessory pieces—especially the bag, which has one side being normal and another side covered by a transparent material. On the latter side, cloth duct tapes and a forgotten-and-left pencil are revealed to be inside—a full playfulness by Kolor here and there.” Oversized styles are brought together with an equilibrium of both bright colors and neutrals. Beiges, greys, and 14 COMPOSURE

browns are offset with vivid purples, reds, and greens. Themes of blue carry nearly every piece of the entire collection, providing stability to the different patterns and colorways presented. The retro feel to the S/S collections only adds to the distinctive styles that Abe has become so widely renowned for, “by balancing and controlling, the garments in this collection still carry a uniqueness of Kolor and a little bit of complexity but are simple as a whole in the new approach of minimalism.” Before we go, let’s dive into the show’s mechanics, the technology used to capture each model’s look, from the moving robotics to the conveyer belt each of them walks on, is just as fascinating as the clothing. An evident mix of past and present can be found in every single aspect of Abe’s presentation— flawless. It truly is about a balance that keeps in line with the vision of Kolor.

CARLA GUGINO THE ENCHANTING

Photography Stephanie Diani Makeup Ermahn Ospina Hair Sebastian Scolarici Styling Cat Pope Text Min A. Lee

A young teen trying to survive Shelley Long’s flamboyant, adventurous Phyllis Nefler in the hit comedy Troop Beverly Hills, joining Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids franchise in a mother’s role at just 27 years old to the being the mother who will do anything to save her daughter alongside Dwayne Johnson in San Andreas, along with a solid line up of cult classics, Sin City to Sucker Punch and Watchmen—Carla Gugino has graced over a hundred films, television series, and the theater stage.

The wide array of roles we’ve seen the incredibly talented Gugino step into are just the beginning of our long admiration for her as an actress. There’s a grounded gracefulness to Gugino while on the set for Composure’s cover shoot, and through each look, her inner beauty radiates. When speaking of her latest movie, Gunpowder Milkshake, we can sense a sharp intellect that makes one realize this is a crucial part of what carried her through such a wonderfully successful career that spans over three decades.

27

Going more into the work of Gugino, we asked what attracts her to specific roles: “I inevitably feel attracted to whatever is the opposite of what I’ve just done! At first, I confused people doing Tennessee Williams on stage, playing the Mom in Spy Kids, when I was too young for the part, and following that up playing the lesbian parole officer in Sin City, etc.,” she shares with us. “One of the perks of having acted most of my life and wanting to keep surprising and pushing myself is that now it is being recognized as a body of work. I’ve always been interested in being a shapeshifter.” Focusing on her career thus far, we asked Gugino if there is one performance that taught her what it takes to be an actor or perhaps presented more challenges than were expected. “I made my Broadway debut in Arthur Miller’s After The Fall,” she says. “I was 32 and had been acting successfully in film and television for almost 20 years at that point. I had very little theater experience. I fought for [it] and won the role. It would prove to be one of my most transformative and creative experiences of my career. I felt somehow completely at home on the stage. It marked a new chapter for me, one that would include a lot of theater!” It’s worthy to note that going from film sets to the stage is no easy feat by any means. The ability to continue for an entire act without stopping on pure memorization is extremely difficult. Some actors stay with film and tv, while others only prefer the stage. Seeing Gugino handle both aptly shows her versatility, as well as the passion for reaching those seemingly impossible goals.

Shifting back over to the excitement and action of Gunpowder Milkshake, which of course, we watched twice because it drew us in on many levels. We asked Gugino about her role as Madeleine and what captivated her during the first readings. “As a child, I moved almost every year of my life. The two constants were school and libraries. Libraries always seemed magical to me. And librarians, the keepers of all the knowledge. Madeleine’s reverence for the sanctity of the library and her love for children made me want to play her.” Knowing these sides of her character brought us to ask about the dynamic between all the different personalities of the librarians and what were Gugino’s favorite scenes to film with the cast. “Anytime all of the women were together, there was a tangible dynamic energy in the room,” she tells us. “I particularly loved the scenes when we were deep in our librarian’s lair. That was an old bunker beneath a gorgeous park in Berlin. It felt like we were ACTUALLY hiding out.” We admit we cried watching the scenes leading up to the end, but it’s from being absorbed into the softer, maternal, protective side of Madeleine. Her storyline was crucial for how the ending would play out. “In violent movies, it’s important that the violence has consequences. The sequence you’re referring to needed to really hit that notion home. For the audience as well as the other characters,” Gugino explains. “With Madeleine, it felt important that once a child enters into the picture, she is completely resolute in her mission: to try and protect her at all costs whether she makes it out alive or not.”

33

With filmography ranging from drama and action to some romance, we are looking at the powerful portrayals Gugino has done. From the brilliant female-led cast of Gunpowder Milkshake to her primary role in the series Jett, the industry has been making more progressive changes, although it took a long time to reach the point where it lies now. We wondered what Gugino’s thoughts and feelings were on this unfurling movement. “I have seen significant progress since I began acting as a teenager. The fact that women writing, directing, starring, and creating their own shows is quite common now is testament to movement in the right direction. That wasn’t happening then.” She continues to say, “I’m heartened

that the girls in my life in their late teens/early 20s feel that their voices are valid and wanted and can be lucrative. As with any movement towards inclusivity, it takes time. The wheels move slower than we’d like, but the more women can work and get their visions out there, the more opportunities will emerge. I’m intrinsically an optimist. We’re moving in the right direction.” We take that as a great sign of hope that this shift will continue forward and more diversity will present itself on film and behind-the-scenes. Knowing that fearless actresses like Carla Gugino are always there to continue pushing for better, more powerful roles garners a great deal of reverence.

JAQUET DROZ

300th Anniversary Edition — Bird Repeater “Paying Homage to the Birthplace of Swiss Watchmaking” In celebration of the 300th anniversary of Pierre Jaquet-Droz, a special collection release of only eight pieces of the Bird Repeater, with its fine complications and hand-engraved, painted scenery encased in an 18k red gold, embodies all that is Jaquet Droz’s Ateliers d’Art. The background comes to life before your eyes with two grown robins against a replica of Jaquet-Droz’s birthplace — a quiet farmhouse alongside the lush La Chaux-de-Fonds valley. The Flora and fauna of this region have been etched in exquisite detail, noting the coming of summer. Peer closely, and you’ll find a dragonfly and grasshopper, each included for their symbolic strength and power to take risks. Each robin moves fluidly as the mother feeds its young and the feathered wings of the male open and close while the egg hatches to reveal a baby. It’s just incredible to watch the animation knowing it is happening all upon a 47mm case. Breaking into the technical aspect of the timepiece, you’ll find it has a power reserve of 48 hours, hand-wound movement, and a stunning white mother-of-pearl and black onyx dial. Every carefully added element tells a story of heritage and wonder. The watch is a fascinating mix of Haute Horlogerie techniques and mechanical movement expertise, putting Jaquet Droz continuously at the top of the Swiss watchmaking world.

NEW LINE DROP

UNDERCOVERISM Since 1990, we have been following Jun Takahashi’s Undercover label for his ability to marry high-end to streetwear seamlessly. With collaborations from Off-White and Supreme to Nike, watching the evolution of Undercover has always been exciting. Knowing Takahashi’s history with mentor Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, we felt the label was pre-destined for international acclaim. When it did propel into mainstream markets, we celebrated the hard-earned success. To start summer, we got a peek into Undercover’s newest men’s line, “Undercoverism.” “This collection is for men of next-generation who resonate and empathize with Undercover’s ‘ism,’” shares the brand. “For 2021-22 AW collection, elements which formulate clothes are distorted in [an] unbalanced, irregular and asymmetric way. Designs express the sense of neutral found between perfection and imperfection and freedom.” A perfect preview into Undercoverism’s first collection aptly named Neoboy. 41

The Italian designer, Maria Grazia Chiuri, presents her breathtaking 2022 Dior Cruise Collection at the Panathenaic Stadium, located in the heart of Athens, Greece. Inspired by the 1951 Parthenon Dior photoshoot, the show starts off with a mysterious opening that transitions to a vibrant, awe-inspiring interplay of Ancient Greece and the present-day designs.

Then, the dynamic show takes us into profound elegance, unveiling a romantic story of the evolution of freedom through movement while incorporating the vision of Greek goddesses. For this collection, Chiuri furthered her studies of the history and archaeology of Ancient Greece, equipped with a different kind of awareness. She visited the archaeological site of Delphi and Akrotiri as well as the Palace of Knossos. Chiuri had discovered that all the legends had more shared elements than differences and centered around Mother Earth’s figure. She believes that in the end, this should enable the understanding of how much humanity is interconnected. Rich in creams, whites, and the iconic blue of Greece, the graceful Cruise Collection consisted of traditional and contemporary pieces of peplos, bomber jackets, drawstring shorts, futuristic sneakers, and other athleisure wear. The sartorial elegance of the collection utilized the collaborative efforts of local ateliers and artisans to incorporate traditional methods of creation. 48 COMPOSURE

The silk fabric used in this collection was created by “Silk Line,” a factory based in Soufli. This family-owned factory uses a jacquard loom which carries on the traditional Greek silk weaving technique. The fabrics designed with stripes and houndstooth were created by this small factory where the warp and weft are made of silk and use metallic gold thread. The resulting material is elegantly transparent with a contrast of thick silk, which flows exquisitely within the Panathenaic Stadium lighting. One of the collection highlights included a variety of peplos, a piece of cloth worn using a graceful draping technique. Each design radiated with natural grace and sublimity. The ethereal dresses were designed to be universal and free-flowing, with a more sportswear approach. Some pieces were modernized with drawstrings, pleated folds, asymmetrical cuts, a more contemporary approach to the traditional peplos. Aside from the extravagant weaving techniques and embroideries, gold is one of the critical elements of the 2022 Dior Cruise collection. The alluring gold jewelry was the perfect finishing touch. Headpieces were adorned with pearls and golden butterflies, which emerged with a brilliant luminescence. The new essentials enhance and complete the eloquent collection.

Taken from an idiom by Japanese tea masters, “Sen no Rikyu,” which translates to “once in a lifetime,” is the ideal behind Jun Takahashi’s latest collection for Undercover. Speaking on the pieces, Takahashi shares, “I worked in a great environment which is a brand new studio located in a mountain where I can walk down to the beach. Cherish the ordinary. It reflects my wish to create designs that are not excessively decorative but deeply rooted in everyday life.” Working in collaboration with Japanese rock band ‘OGRE YOU ASSHOLE,’ the graphic details reflect looks that speak to Takahashi’s understanding that time is fleeting, and once it has passed by, it is gone. He says, “any moment in life cannot be repeated. Treasure every single day of your life...it is the theme for this collection.”
