Never Rule Out the Unexpected Life is unpredictable. I know you’ve heard that before, but it bears repeating…and repeating. As we grow older, we think we know stuff. That’s natural. It started when we were children – every time we learned something, we knew we were a little smarter and, by the same token, that we had ascended another stair on the way to knowing everything we needed to know. And, of course, knowing stuff means we think we know what to expect.

Odds, Averages, and Best Guesses I haven’t lived in Oklahoma long enough to really know what’s normal for the weather, but I sure didn’t think that reaching 92º on the first day of spring was normal! As many parts of the country experienced in March, the weather has been crazy lately. As it happens, that day broke the high temperature record set back in 1907 (which incidentally is the year Oklahoma became the 46th State). Nope, the “average temperature” for March 20th is 64º.

Averages, after all, are calculated from highs and lows. There are no guarantees that any particular occurrence will be near an average – it could be high or low, almost normal or not even close. I think of gambling that way too. You can have excellent strategies toward any game of chance, but you can’t eliminate the element of chance.

Business is like that too. You can be very smart. You can have an excellent plan for supporting and growing your company…but you will always have to react to the surprises. An excellent strategy is your best bet for weathering the storms and being successful, but how you handle the unexpected will teach you a lot.

What Oklahoma and Vegas have in Common Life in Oklahoma, life in Vegas, and life in wherever you happen to be at this moment all have that one, inescapable thing in common – there is always that element of unpredictability. We’ll never know everything, even if we think or act like we do. But, what Vegas teaches us is equally important – remember to enjoy the ride!

he path of factory innovation is leading us to automated systems rather than true robotics. Though industrial robotics has been used for 30 years in our industry, it has served mainly as a forerunner to later systems. Its earliest commercialization, the robotic arms of the Koskovich component saw, is being displaced by linear sawing systems. Its most ambitious adaptation, the robotic-aided truss assembly by Jim Urmson, has not progressed. And today’s most advanced system, Randek’s AutoEye, employs no robots.

4. Setting the jig: Virtek projected the truss perimeter and joint geometry. Koskovich and Alpine introduced “pucks-on-acme-screw” setup systems that had design limitations, but were forerunners to today’s widely used Planx and Wizard systems. Urmson employed automated pedestals to form the jig.

Let’s examine each fabrication step and follow the evolution of technology:

6. Fetching and pressing connectors: Urmson and Randek both innovated a magazine fed conveying system that delivered truss plates to magnetic hydraulic press heads.

1. Picking lumber: Jerry Koskovich pioneered a bunk and magazine lumber feeding system on his linear (Miser) saw, and not, significantly, on his much more popular component saw. The two-bunk limitation of this system was overcome much later by the Wood Runner (and now the Ranger) retrieval system(s).

2. Feeding the saw: Linearly feeding lumber to saws became the preferred method overseas in order to safeguard operators, but only lately has it become the American standard. Linear saws enable pre-marking along the entire length of boards, and insure more precise lengths and cutting angles. Accuracy of cuts is crucial when fitting automated jigging (see 4 below).

5. Stitching members: Urmson added stapling fixtures to the robot’s arms to secure joints and outside perimeters.

7. Controlling plate placement: Randek employs a state-of-the-art vision system to insure accuracy of plate placement. Urmson mechanically secured the truss perimeter until pressing cycle.

Las Vegas: OQM 2017

ell, I just returned from the SBCA Open Quarterly Meeting in Las Vegas.

It was almost historical. This was the first time that I can remember the OQM being in Las Vegas. It seems a place that has a way of drawing greater attendance for any event and this was true for the OQM. A great time was had by all and a lot of solid discussion occurred. We had all of the regular attendees in addition to several first time attendees. I arrived early on Tuesday for a round of golf with a few industry leaders. It was a bit windy, but we all had fun and had the chance to speak in a less formal atmosphere. The discussions were wide ranging…..as were many of my tee shots. It was all good and primed us for the meetings to come.

The dinners were also fantastic. SBCA President, Jack Dermer, arranged for the group to enjoy wonderful meals at wonderful restaurants. Some of us might have over consumed. TPI members split the tab for the drinks and we all learned something. The bar tab grows with each meal in Las Vegas.

The meetings were insightful and the many first timers remarked about how much they learned from the discussions.

Most were happy to hear that the committee for the new bracing standard is going to pause and enter discussions with a broader group before continuing. This is important to everyone in the industry. The wrong direction could impact component manufacturers, plate suppliers, and installers alike. Jack Dermer led the charge to slow the process and gather more input. In the end, everyone lined up with Jack and we now have a direction that we can move toward…together.

First time attendee, Apex Industries from Virginia, provided a lot of input.

There is a group of bright, young people in our industry. Jared Dix of Apex is one of them and has shown his desire to be a leader in getting more young people into the industry. His ideas are thrilling to everyone. Jared is going to produce videos to entice and enlighten young people. His thought is that we have to reach out to young PHONE: 800-289-5627

people in a different way. This was reinforced by others stating that we need to change the format of the meetings to keep younger people engaged. Josh, from California TrusFrame, remarked that all of the statistics and line items should be sent electronically and not reviewed in monotonous detail at the meeting just to fill time. BRAVO! Someone finally said what many of have thought for a long time.

We must figure out a way not only to get more young people involved but also to keep them engaged.

First time attendees from Utah and Texas, A Truss and Longhorn Truss, engaged in the conversations almost immediately. Everyone felt comfortable and everyone’s views were respected and discussed as valid ideas. There were a number of discussions about regional issues that turned out to be similar problems occurring in other parts of the country.

These are the kind of things that we need to know about as an industry. Individuals think something might be a local issue until the discussion begins and we learn that something similar is happening in another area. It was great!

many others involved with Operation Finally Home. It has been extremely rewarding for all. It will be a high bar to be measured against, but Dwight set a standard that we should all try to achieve and this award is a small way to honor a great man.

Another award that I didn’t know existed is the Barry Dixon Award.

Apparently, I set a new indoor world record and received recognition. If you want to know more about this award, you will have to attend the next OQM in Baltimore, MD.

One of the highlights for me was the announcement of a new award. With the recent passing of Dwight Hikel and in remembrance of his altruistic nature, the association created the Dwight Hikel Humanitarian Award. It may not be an annual award.

It is going to recognize a member who exhibits the values that Dwight lived by his entire life. Someone who gives back to the community and never does so for self-gain or recognition. This is how Dwight lived. He gave a lot, not only to his community but many others as well. Dwight is the guy who got me, SBCA, and

It was by far one of the most interesting meetings we have had in a long time. Many of the attendees stayed over for another day or two either for recovery and to complete the Las Vegas Experience. In my opinion, Las Vegas should become a permanent location for one OQM each year. High attendance, lots of discussion, and lots of fun. Those sound like good reasons to return.

A simplified view of the workflow for engineering and constructing a set of roof trusses for a home is as follows: 1. The builder submits a set of plans to the BFS design department. These plans are used by truss designers to create a detailed set of roof truss designs that will later be used by the production department in physically cutting the lumber and assembling the complete package of roof trusses to be used for a house.

2. Before actual production of the roof trusses can commence, the original house plans and the newly-completed truss designs are sent to the county permitting agency for design review and approval.

3. Once the approval is received, the production department takes the design, cuts the necessary lumber and assembles the roof trusses for delivery to the home site.

4. After delivery, the accounting department bills the customer (homebuilder) for the delivered truss package.

5. If any repairs or adjustments to the finished trusses are required in the field, BFS has crews who must quickly respond to the customer (homebuilder) and address any quality issues or design errors that are found.

At each point in the basic workflow, valuable time was lost in keeping track of which designer had what jobs (which were originally in paper folders routed to various design desks), finding out what stage the county permitting process was at and communicating with the customer to clarify design requirements. In addition, if communication with the customer were not thoroughly documented, BFS would become responsible for costly after-production design changes, which would often eliminate any profit margin in the original order. hold designers accountable for timely completion of assignments. The average time from job intake to a finished design ready for production was 20 days prior to BFS implementing AppWright JobCenter. Six months after implementation, average job turnaround time was reduced to just 10 days. (End of case study) Do not fall for the “we got something just like it and works just as well” line from common vendors. No, they do not. Citrix-type systems require a complicated setup, maintenance work, very large central servers, a skilled IT staff to support it and a much higher bandwidth internet connection. Modern truly web-based design applications like AW will always outperform the older terminal server technology and do it for much less of an investment in support staff, whereas browsers are nearly maintenance free. Anyone who has to use a terminal server application is always concerned about internet speed, but companies using AW can use any web browser and have far fewer issues with their internet throughput. When I cut my lumber, do I affect the lumber grade?

A

s a general rule, when you cut lumber to length, the lumber grade is unchanged. In those cases, care should be taken to transfer that grade verification along with the cut lumber. This can be done with a lumber crayon, segregation, tagging, or many other suitable ways.

Ripping lumber, however, can impact the grade.

Because lumber grading is dependent on the width as to what knots or defects are allowed, ripping lumber can have a significant effect on the lumber grade. In fact, when lumber is ripped, a new grading process must occur in order to determine if the grade marks should be changed.

Prescriptive codes sometimes allow for ripping. An example might be tapering a floor member to provide slope on an exterior floor. The framer is required to evaluate the tapered member and determine suitability. In some municipalities, however, this tapering is not allowed. The joist would have to be installed at an angle to provide drainage.

A similar situation can occur when manufacturing trusses. In the diagram below, a notch is created in a wall vertical in this attic frame. This notch is not allowed without specific engineering, so it cannot be done without a proper analysis. The trusses manufactured in the photo have this specific instruction; however, in the engineering, the engineer purposely specifies that the notch should not be over cut. A good method of making this notch would be to drill a smooth hole at the point of intersection of the edges of the notches. This hole helps to eliminate surface defect concentrations.

The cuts are made to the hole taking special care not to score or cut the opposite side of the hole.

Most importantly, the general rule you should always follow is – keep in mind your common sense. If something looks like it may have affected the lumber grade, then look more closely at it! Being careful and observant will help you avoid potential problems before they happen.

Growing Forward with Oregon Truss

O

regon is one of the strongest building markets in the country, and Oregon Truss is preparing for the next chapter of our future. Thanks to our founder Wayne Beebe’s foresight to plan for expansion, we have a brand new factory that enables us to maintain normal lead times while our competitors are struggling to meet customer expectations. All investments are being carefully planned to enhance safety, efficiency, and productivity per employee. Soon we will complete our spacious, efficient, and comfortable offices. Our state-of-the-art office building includes SIPs walls and roof, along with ground water/in-floor heating cooling systems, and we are looking forward to moving in. The new office is attached to a new, innovative manufacturing plant which was put on-line in early 2016. A highlyautomated floor truss line was developed for us by Square 1 – it will be installed upon completion of the new building that will house the expanded saw, jack table along with the floor truss lines.

We are rethinking every aspect of the business including our business model, organizational structure, and all aspects of manufacturing and logistics. Sales increased significantly in 2016 and look to be even higher in 2017. We are growing quickly and looking for good people to grow with us. We are currently recruiting for Estimators, Designers, and Production Managers to join our team. As good designers are scarce and take years to develop, we are developing the facilitation of remote designers as a core competency. We need good people in many areas to support our growth, so if you know of anyone near, or wanting to move to, the Pacific Northwest, please give them my name.

To help with the transition from survival mode necessitated by the recent recession and take advantage of growth opportunities, Wayne Beebe approached me to join Oregon Truss last year. Although I had recently retired to the Oregon Coast after 34 years with Simpson Strong-Tie, I was ready for the right challenge so I agreed to explore ways to help Wayne achieve his vision. I had never been part of a truss manufacturing operation, but I’ve had extensive exposure to the truss industry and the wonderful people who have committed their careers to improving this unique aspect of light-frame construction around the world. Initially I was brought on as a consultant to help refine business plans, explore company structure, and help evolve the company culture. But soon I realized the potential of this company. The timing, location, company life cycle stage, and potential for me to add significant value all aligned to make this a perfect fit. The opportunity to grow something great excited me so much that I bought in as a minority partner.

How Quality Control is Essential in your Lean Program Part 4 in our TIMWOODS Series

S

higeo Shingo, who is considered the world’s leading expert on manufacturing practices and the Toyota Production System, wrote “humans are animals that make mistakes.” But how often do we make mistakes in our lumber yards, millwork, and component operations? Trained military technicians make mistakes 20% of the time in simulated emergency situations. (Scary, isn’t it?) So is the solution to mistakes and defects getting rid of human operators and automating the whole process? No. Even if everything could be automated, we would still have imperfect raw material. We will always need to address the reality that “animals that make mistakes” are at the heart of our operations. We cannot eliminate all defects, but we can work to limit them.

Defects are what most people think of when you talk about waste, but these are only one small part of the eight wastes. Defects are mistakes that require additional time, resources, and money to fix. In a lumber yard, a defect might be moldy material that is passed on to a customer that you have to make a special trip to go back out and replace. In our component yards, it may be material with excessive wane or knots that passes through our saws and makes it to the assembly tables only to be rejected and stop production.

Recently I was in one of the many operations I work with each year and I saw both the good and bad of how defects get through our system. But let’s start with this philosophy right up front that should be non-negotiable for everyone: TIM WOODS: Our “friend” and acronym for the eight wastes in Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over-Processing, OverProduction, Defects, and Skills.

These three principles serve as good best practice for any quality control program in any operation. Indeed, defects can be limited using best practices including standardized work plans, more stringent quality control at all levels, a full understanding of work requirements and customer needs, and simple job aids such as checklists and visuals.

One of the best practices I always teach at component operations is that you have three opportunities to catch defects before you assemble product: picking product, feeding a saw, and a sawyer. (Yes, this reduces to two opportunities with linear saws) Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at least two or three sets of eyes on your raw material before it gets to the assemblers, and that provides opportunities to downfall material without stopping production.

We do not pass on bad work or material. This best practice was on display for me recently when I observed a sawyer and catcher working in tandem defecting parts (though not a high percentage) to ensure only good material reached the assembly tables. With no QC program in place yet, I asked the sawyer why he was doing this. His answer was that it would be what he would expect if he were at the table so he was not delayed any further.

Costs of Defects Defects cost a lot more than what most managers think. It is not only the cost of the defect itself. Think about what has to happen: we have to rework the product or service, processes are interrupted, and, in many cases, manpower and machinery are stopped, and sometimes we have to go out to the site of the customer to rework material. We have already lost the time and capacity spent producing the part, then we have to reschedule and use more time and capacity to produce replacement(s). Most estimates calculate that the true cost of a defect is around ten times higher than the initial cost!

We do not do bad work. In contrast to the sawyer and catcher, a forklift operator pulling an order in the same customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lumber yard did not take steps to correct defects.

When pulling loose material, they hit a bunk of material with their tines but still loaded the same material on that order. When I questioned him, he said the customer would probably accept it and, if not, they would be out to the site in a few days again. (Note: not to worry, we corrected the load before it left.)

Eliminating Defects Best practices that you can implement in eliminating defects always start with your management team. You have to lead by example, set the standard, and show your team the importance of why we eliminate defects/waste in our operations. Quality Control programs are sometimes seen as necessary nuisances, but they are valuable lean management tools which can eliminate waste and defects in your yards and component plants.

Various QC programs exist for millwork operations and I have helped to write several for many clients. And for lumber yards, though there are no standardized QC programs, I always advocate for a program of back checks, material quality checks, etc. Again the focus should be on never allowing bad material to pass from our hands to our customers. For component operations (truss and wall panel) I always advise clients to use the SBCA QC programs. These programs have existed for more than 20 years and have been used by hundreds of operations across North America including the operations I owned. In fact, my father Don Hershey spent much time at Imperial Components writing some of the foundation of the original program along with several other Past Presidents and their operations. Today the SBCA QC program is even easier to use with the new data management program that SBCA staff has implemented. Many operations using the SBCA program have experienced cost savings due to reduced call backs and repairs, in some cases up to 65-75%. QC programs provide focus for each of our associates to recognize what we provide and produce for our customers.

QC Visual Aids Defects, as evidenced above, come in many forms, so visual aids really help to identify what our management expectations are for each area of the operation. Particularly with Millennials and Generation Z, a visual aid may be all they are going to look at since reading could take ‘too much time.’ The more common types of visual aids are simple tools used to show such things as standards, examples of good and bad, and methods for inspection.

These visual aids come in many different forms, and can be as creative as necessary to produce the desired results. To assist with visual inspection, mistake-proofing devices can be used to speed up the inspection process.

In many of our operations, sample boards showing bad, marginally bad, and good material may be used to help employees differentiate the various levels of parts being inspected. This can make it easier to identify and remove defects from the process. Other types of visual aids include photographs, drawings, diagrams, and samples of substitute parts. The concept behind these visual aids is to make it easier for employees to identify defects before value is added. Then add the simple “KISS” of reminding employees that passing bad material down the line is only going to cause additional downtime the further it gets in the process.

Lean Manufacturing and Quality Control really do go handin-hand. With attention from the entire team and a recognition that Quality Control is not just one individual’s responsibility in the operation, you will end up saving substantial time by eliminating defects and waste throughout the process. How the Green Building Revolution is Encouraging the Wood Products Market

hile it’s well known that wood products offer a wide variety of environmental benefits – typically less embodied energy, lower air and water pollution, and a lighter carbon footprint than other commonly used building materials – it can often be a challenge to translate this information in a tangible way for customers looking to build green or earn points under a green building system evaluation. Fortunately, almost all principal green building rating systems now recognize environmental performance data based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which has encouraged development of environmental product declarations (EPDs), a standardized reporting tool used to convey the environmental footprint of building materials in simple terms.

Together with the Canadian Wood Council and California Redwood Association, the American Wood Council (AWC) has produced 12 third-party verified EPDs that describe the environmental impacts and manufacturing energy consumption for generic wood products, including softwood lumber, softwood plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), glued laminated timber (Glulam), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), wood I-Joists, redwood decking, medium-density fiberboard, and particleboard. AWC and UL Environment (ULE), the program operator and third-party verifier, also created transparency briefs to summarize the most critical data presented in the EPDs, with the intent of providing design and construction professionals a very quick way to identify environmental details for key products. The transparency briefs are often all that is required by green building rating systems to demonstrate conformance with the requirement.

The EPDs and transparency briefs are compliant with the relevant standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and are available as free downloads at www.awc.org. They take into account everything from composition and environmental impacts to water and energy usage, along with other product information. It’s all in a standardized format to make it easier to digest and translate the environmental characteristics of the wood industry’s products and where they can earn points in green building codes and rating systems.

The booming green building industry, paired with evolving green rating systems and building codes that embrace a more systematic, multi-attribute assessment of building products, has resulted in an opportunity to strengthen the wood products market in North America. To have an informed conversation with developers, construction professionals and even homeowners, ensure you are up to speed on the latest changes that recognize the environmental benefits of wood. Transition From Multi-Family to Single Family is Here

For a few months now, I have detected an uneasiness among lumber buyers. Near term expectations are bullish, however, there is an underlying sense of caution. Something is just not quite right in the housing sector. I believe I know what it is.

Winds of Change Several years ago, when Canadian lumber producers began courting the Chinese for their lumber business, I warned not to put too many lumber eggs in the China basket. The reason was, as soon as the trade became lucrative, Russia would come strong-arming for the business. It took about three years before the Communist allies struck a deal and sent shock waves through the North American Softwood lumber industry. What we were reminded of was, “when something seems too good to be true, it usually is.”

I see a similar situation developing in the multi-family housing boom. On the same ground, and in a fraction of time that it takes to build 20 new single family homes, a multi-family builder can construct 200 apartments. This inflates housing starts data.

Both the component industry and lumber dealers have become very dependent upon these $2 million-ish framing packages. Is it too good to be true? Can it last?

Single vs. Multi-Family Demand I believe the uneasy feeling among lumber buyers is the next big surprise in housing. That is going to be multi-family saturation, i.e., ample supply and a shift to single family homeownership or rental.

Here is why. The driving force behind the multi-family boom is millennials, the largest pool of potential home buyers who desire location on a budget. Multi-family builders are making renting more desirable than owning, primarily by putting them closer to their desired living area at a lower price than buying.

What could possibly cause these young adults to change their priorities and shift from renters to owners and move? One tiny thing. A baby.

The social implications for a young married couple completely change when they become a family. On the average, 3.2 years into a marriage or co-habitation, millennials have a child together. In a matter of a just a few months, these hard-core renters need more space, a yard, privacy, and security. They need a fence for the baby and the dog. They become responsible adults thinking about the future. They realize that investing in a home is desirable and makes financial sense. The reasons for renting, rather excuses for not buying, evaporate.

Seeing the Signs One question now is, when will the number of “transitioners” reach critical mass? The multi-family market grew for five years, 2011–2015, and 2014–15 were surge years with many metro areas doubling their output during those two years. The second half of 2016 saw a decline in growth.

Is this our leading indicator of shift in demand from multi-family to single-family housing? I think so.

The initial reaction will be evident in building permits. We should see a decline in multi-family permits 5 or more units. That will show up in starts in the subsequent months. But not to panic. This decline in multi-family will also forecast an increase in single family starts.

I wonder out loud if MPC wood trusses could be used to design and construct a “prefabricated truss-frame” storage shed/safe room building that would safely resist the FEMA recommended wind speeds? With the requisite hold-down-hardware embedded into the truss-frame, the building could be delivered to the site ready for the concrete foundation work needed to secure the shed/safe room.

Some readers might remember the efforts of the US Forest Products Laboratory in the late 1970s to develop and test a “truss frame house.” One obstacle to implementing the idea stemmed from the lack of architectural flexibility as the system utilized identical truss frames for the roof, walls, and floor framing. However, for the case of a small storage shed, a simple rectangular shape may not be viewed as an obstacle, but as the norm for a storage shed.

The most common method for residential construction is light-frame construction using either balloon-framing or platform-framing methods. Standardized dimensional lumber has become the dominant building material in light-frame construction because of its economy. The other method is heavy-timber construction, which often uses large solid-wood sections for nonresidential construction, such as for storage, mercantile and industrial buildings.

In Europe, there is a trend to create larger “laminated” wood sections using the more traditional standardized dimensional lumber of the 1990s. This trend culminated in what is now classified as cross-laminated timber, or CLT. CLT can be used to create floor panels and roof panels. In North America, this is classified either as cross-laminated timber (CLT) or generically as mass timber.

CLT is essentially multiple layers of wood panels. Each layer of wooden panels is laid crosswise on the one before at approximately a 90° angle and glued using a polyurethane adhesive to increase the stability of the entire panel. Typical thickness of the individual boards can vary from 3/8” to 2” thick. Typical board width can vary from 2-3/8” to 9-1/2” wide. CLT panels are fabricated and marketed from 3-ply CLT up to 7-ply CLT. CLT manufacturers normally publish characteristic properties for their panels – such as bending strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and panel stiffness – to assist Designers in specifying these products.

A Cross Laminated Timber Handbook has been published by FPInnovations in Canada as an introduction to CLT, which can be downloaded for free on their website. The American Wood Council has a self-study guide on CLT that is also available for download on their website.

As in all wood buildings, connection designs are critical to the success of this new type of building material. Simpson Strong-Tie offices in Europe have been instrumental in developing and supplying connectors and fasteners in the CLT market. Specialized ring-shank nails and long metal screws have been developed as well. In mid-2014, Simpson Strong-Tie North America (Pleasanton, California Testing Facility) embarked on an initial test program to assess those connectors and fasteners developed for the CLT market by Simpson Strong-Tie Europe, using North American CLT panels to verify and quantify the performance characteristics according to North American testing protocols (American Society for Testing and Materials and Canadian Construction Materials Centre).

The initial test program used CLT panels fabricated in Western Canada using Canadian Spruce-Pine-Fir (S-P-F) lumber.

The connectors and ring-shank nails were imported from the Simpson Strong-Tie European manufacturing facilities.

Testing of the connectors also included the Simpson Strong-Tie Strong-Drive® SD Connector screws, which, as expected, provided higher load capacity than the ring-shank nails.

Other types of long countersunk screws such as the Strong-Drive® SDWS Timber screw (countersunk) or Strong-Drive SDWH Timber-Hex (hex head) screw (shown) are used either to splice the floor panels together or to drag the diaphragm loads back to the column or post as necessary.

As CLT continues to gain acceptance in North America, other connection details will also become more popular. Simpson Strong-Tie intends to continue developing and improving connection details to support this type of construction.

Building code acceptance is another important requirement and development that is in progress in both Canada and the U.S. In Canada, the 2014 edition of CSA O86 “Engineering Design in Wood” has reserved a section for CLT. The 2015 edition of the International Building Code (IBC) recognized CLT when it is manufactured to the product standard. CLT walls and floors will be permitted in all types of combustible construction. The 2015 National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction was recently published and approved as an ANSI American National Standard. The 2015 National Design Specification is also referenced in the 2015 IBC. The future is here. Environmentally friendly mass timber (including CLT) is poised to grow in use, especially with the recognition of CLT in the building codes. North American manufacturing of CLT has been established and can only grow to support the expanding use of this new building material.

Vivian Hollinshed, R.I.P.

N

ot one of the fathers of our industry did more design work than Vivian Hollinshed. Over his 55 active years, on the small drafting board behind his desk, this magnificent man named Vivian crafted countless fine homes and innovative commercial buildings. All the while pioneering trusses in a stick framed market, and building an outstanding business.

Early on, at his father’s Cape Fear Building Supply in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Vivian foresaw the need to separate, literally with a fence, the truss business, newly named Comtech, from the lumber business. Vivian’s late brother Joe, and later his son Tom, managed the lumber yard next door as an independent entity. When Stock Building Supply offered to buy both businesses, but settled for the lumber yard, Comtech continued to prosper, and Tom came to run the truss plant.

Entering the lobby of Comtech you’d see Vivian bent over a design challenge, through the glass walls of his office. When he spotted you, he’d flash his wry smile and he’d summon a witty quip from his brilliant mind. If you asked Vivian for a truss price, he’d tell you to place your request in the larger of two stacks.

When asked why not the smaller stack, Vivian would remark, “Those plans don’t need bids.” As a further testament to his design acumen, if the foundation on the plans was inadequate, Vivian would redesign it. As an indication of his passion for accuracy, he’d perform the final QC check while his trusses were on the delivery trailer.

While we have lost another founder, Vivian, like Dwight Hikel, is survived by a fine son, Tom Hollinshed. Tom, like Joe Hikel, took Comtech to new heights under the watchful eye of his father. Tom revamped, enlarged, and automated his plant. He incented his design staff and conquered new markets. Tom greatly contributed to our industry as a founding member of the North Carolina SBCA Chapter. He collaborated closely with state code officials and developed the data, with Kirk Grundahl, that freed truss designers of a code dictate that attempted to impose wall design responsibility on our industry.

Vivian’s legacy endures most powerfully in the people he nurtured and mentored. John Freeman, Carol Dees, and Chuck Rogers are just three of those who he powerfully influenced.

As Vivian has left us far too early, I am reminded of his playful humor at a time he had to leave the office early, when Vivian said, “He had to go see a sick aunt.”

I loved and revered the man. It was a great honor to know him and serve him.

Never Accept Your Employer’s Counter-Offer

Y

ou’ve been hunting for months for a new job offer.

You’re just not happy with one, some, or all parts of your current job and it’s been stressful to say the least. Finally, after constant interviews, follow-ups, follow up interviews, follow up interview follow-ups, and hesitant follow up calls as to your applicant status, you finally get the job offer. It might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s a step in the right direction. Maybe the company has more to offer you in terms of benefits, or growth, or maybe the pay is closer to what you think you’re worth. Whatever the case is, you are happy with the offer. Happy enough to leave your current employer, at least.

You’d be surprised. This happens more frequently than you think (not quite literally, though). Don’t take the offer. I repeat: Don’t. Take. The. Offer. I’ll break down why.

First: Why are they giving you this money? They value you.

That’s great, but they didn’t value you enough to give you the money until the threat of your leaving came to fruition. That in itself tells you a lot about the company, and it’s a pretty good sign that it’s not a company you want to work for, because they’ll take advantage of the information asymmetry regarding salaries at the first opportunity. It’s also important to remember; they are not going to give you that money if they can find someone that is as good as you are for the same price. In effect, they are trying to keep you and are willing to pay closer to your market value because they know what your output is, versus taking a risk on a new candidate. What this means is that the second they find someone who can produce at your level, your head is on the chopping block. Second, that money always comes with strings.

Higher quotas, less leniency when it comes to sick time, vacation time, missing benchmarks, etc. They will hang that money over your head for the rest of the time you work within the company.

The time comes to meet with your boss and break the news.

Maybe you despise them and you revel at the thought of watching them realize that one of their hardest working employees realized their value. Possibly, you like your boss, and feel bad- or even worse, guilty- for leaving them to clean up the mess that will inevitably get left behind because of the time between your last day and the first day of your replacement, which will likely be months down the road. MiTek Releases USP® Adhesive Anchor Design Program Powerful Design Tool Optimizes Epoxy Connection Solutions for Threaded Rod and Re-bar Anchors Post-Installed in Concrete with CIA-GEL 7000-C CHESTERFIELD, MO – March 15, 2017 – MiTek announced today that it has launched a new USP Adhesive Anchor Design program. With French and Spanish language options, the software automatically scans for updates and will alert the user when updates are available.

A Tribute to Caring…

“If I didn’t care for him so much, I’d let him go,” said the late Vivian Hollinshed about an aspiring young designer, Chuck Rogers. Chuck knew nothing about trusses when he came to Vivian’s company, Comtech in Fayetteville, NC. And now, nearly 20 years later, thanks to Vivian, he’s lifted his family out of poverty and found a great career.

This great truss man named Vivian passed away last week at age 85, and was memorialized in a packed church under trusses that he helped design. Over his 50 years of hard work in this business, Vivian showed us the key to success.

According to Chuck, “Vivian cared about people. He ran a meritocracy. If you worked really hard for him he recognized it … he was hard to work for and wonderful to work for … I have never worked for anyone I respected as much.”

Comtech continues to thrive under Vivian’s star “pupil,” his son Tom, who has nearly doubled Comtech’s business since Vivian turned it over to him.
