an you feel it? The end of the year is approaching fast. It’s funny how time doesn’t fly at a constant speed, but rather it seems to quicken or slow depending on how much is happening. Now that it’s November, it will keep moving fast until New Years.

Time to Say Hello Fortunately, a lot of old friends, and new ones, had the opportunity to get together for a few days at the end of October. As our contributors in this issue can attest, the annual tradeshow was a great opportunity to see the latest, hear the updates, and keep looking forward. Part business and part pleasure, the show brought some face-to-face connection at a time when more and more of our lives are conducted electronically.

Sad to Say Goodbye Unfortunately, the fall also brought the loss of more industry veterans. South Florida said goodbye to the legendary Phyllis Chambers. Smart and meticulous, it’s difficult to imagine Chambers Truss without her.

Renowned legal counsel to the Capital Area and Carolinas Chapters, A. Holt Gwyn also passed away in September. With his remarkable insight and expertise, he was a fixture at these chapter meetings. Indeed, The Advertiser was very grateful to be able to print an excellent article from Holt in January, “The Dirty Dozen Subcontract Clauses.” It’s hard to imagine how he managed to juggle so many things and accomplish all that he did.

his year’s Show, some 45 years after my first, brought some amazing revelations. The most awesome sight was an actual working truss plant on the Show floor. The most intriguing experience was being transported inside a robotic plant. And, the most welcome sounds were good economic projections specifically targeted to our business.

MiTek’s truss plant brought before our eyes automation of the entire assembly process: picking, cutting, and delivering parts to truss tables without a human touch, via our Component Delivery System (CDS). Unseen, but essential to its success, is its ‘brain’, the advanced shop floor software, MiTek’s Virtual Plant (MVP). When Larry and Sheryl Dix, owners of Apex Truss, watched from the elevated observation platform, they were awestruck by this display, and its promise for the future.

Trussmatic’s virtual reality experience took us to Finland, via VR goggles, and stationed us right next to their fearsome robotic assembly machines, a viewpoint we could never safely attain in their plant. Robotics is now being deployed in the U.S., and by the next BCMC we will know much more about its applicability to our business.

The economic forecast, by Todd Tomalak, provided some welcome practicality. His firm, John Burns Consulting, has gained success observing housing on the grassroots level. Their thesis, that “all housing economics are local” can be confirmed by most component manufacturers. B. J. Louws, for instance, reports strong demand in his Seattle market today, but sees the rapidly declining affordability of local housing clouding his future. Contrarily, CMs in the South observe more modest demand, but take comfort in the lack of overbuilding. Burns Consultants do see the lack of developable land holding back housing growth in most major markets for the next 2–3 years. However, they also observe that 12.5 million new household formations between now and 2025 will ramp up housing demand in a few short years.

Mr. Tomalak closed by highlighting the increased value of (no surprise) pre-made components, particularly wall panels to address labor shortages. To answer his call, several semi-automated nailing bridges and plate markers were arrayed on the show floor. While both systems have been exhibited previously, they now have been deployed with great success across the country. The bridges operate with a fraction of the tools, and they staple or nail automatically at preset spacings after being manually positioned. Generally, their advantage is not blazing speed, but improved accuracy and less complexity than their 30+ tool predecessors. In addition, top and bottom wall plate-marking and cutting is now addressed with multiple ink-jet marking solutions. Unique to this application is the incorporation of easily-changeable ink-cartridges in the Hornet system.

The 1972 Show presumed that housing would be built with modules on a moving assembly line with lots of manual labor. The 2007 Show projected that housing will be built with components made on an automated assembly line with little or no manual labor. During both shows we sold a record amount of truss equipment. During both shows we heard generally optimistic economic forecasts, but were concerned about the sustainability of the housing expansion. What’s different is the exuberance (I still recall) that we felt leaving Louisville in 1972, and the cautious optimism we experienced leaving Omaha this year. What’s also delightfully reassuring is that, in 2017, we have only half the housing starts that we had in 1972, while we have twice the number of household formations and fifty percent more people. Steady growth ahead until an even better 2018 BCMC in Milwaukee.

Making a Big Impression For the nearly 1,500 attendees at the 2017 BCMC, a clear majority perused the Square 1 Design booth. Witnessing a more efficient way an individual person could stack more than four roof truss setups, or could produce more than 1,250 lineal feet of wall panels.

It took considerable effort to bring an operational factory to the trade show, but educating our audience was our key focus.

We demonstrated that an individual can stack at least 4 different truss setups with a single remote control, while still hand stacking small trusses. Reducing labor in multiple cases from 5 men down to 1 man. With a payoff of less than 12 months, it is foolish to not further investigate Square 1 Design’s Intelligent Stacking Systems.

Wall Panel Extrusion For years, we have attempted to educate the North American market on a better, faster, and more efficient way to build wall panels. Bringing a wall panel factory to the 2017 BCMC was the best path forward. Overwhelmed by the response from the attendees and exhibitors, we would like you to know that we appreciate your time and attendance. A special Thank You to the Spida Extruder operator Jonathan Kent from New Zealand whose first trip to North America was under extreme duress! Few realize Jonathan’s first look at the Spida Software was Tuesday night, when he was given a brief demo and a little time to build his first four wall panels ever on Spida Extruder. You could witness an individual who only learned the software a few hours earlier. Imagine how efficient an experienced operator could extrude a house.

Labor shortages continue to grow and that is often at the top of the list of things to improve. Square 1 Design demonstrated multiple ways to repurpose staff throughout the factory. russ designers be aware: energy codes are changing HVAC systems. Until recently, duct layouts were designed like truss layouts of the 1970s – hand-drawn on blue prints. Since Building Officials don’t require residential heating/AC layouts, you may have not known of collisions until truss members were cut. Fortunately, the changes ahead may lessen duct runs and possible interferences with trusses, and may actually favor floor trusses. And, you may soon receive engineered duct layouts electronically that ultimately will integrate into whole house models like Sapphire Structure.

It’s about time that heating/AC contractors engineer every house like we are required to do. Their old “rules of thumb” that sized mechanical systems on the ‘worst’ combination of options often fail on site-specific plans. The impact of overdesign in mechanical systems departs significantly from conservative structural design. For example, if we supply a two ply girder where a maxed out single member will work, the homeowner derives a better value. However, if a two ton cooling system is supplied where a one ton is adequate, the homeowner may never be comfortable. A good HVAC design must be properly sized and balanced, and involves at least as much engineering as a roof truss system. Every individual component of a heating and cooling system, even a register in the back bedroom, affects the entire system.

Scott Austin, owner of Structural, Inc. in Maryland, knows the value of coordinating truss layouts with his local HVAC providers. By designing floors, walls, and roofs in a single model, the locations of both duct runs and risers can be preplanned (see figure). And, most significantly, Scott’s high density projects require the flexibility of open web floor trusses to accommodate ductwork. Floor trusses are also advantageous in single family applications in order to keep ducts within conditioned spaces that are often code mandated.

Finally, truss designers should be aware of the powerful mechanical design software that is used increasingly by builders and their subcontractors. Wrightsoft, by MiTek, and similar programs enable faster and more accurate site-specific mechanical layouts that may lessen interferences. Additionally, by right-sizing components and minimizing the size and length of duct runs, potential collisions are minimized. In summary, collaborating with local HVAC contractors enables component designers to add significant value to their design work.

Is a Linear Saw Paired with Each Roof Truss Assembly Table a Magic Cure for the Best Lean System?

A current trend in our industry is that the component manufacturers are being advised that one should have a fully automated lumber retrieval system linked to an automated linear saw that pushes the cut lumber directly to the assembly table with an auto puck system. This type of setup is often touted as being the best for truss assembly to lower the cost of labor and get the most from your investment. Well, is it really in all cases?

Any of the different manufacturers’ equipment could be set up in this configuration. This setup involves a four-person team, with three on the table and one cutting. This system is frequently being hyped as the perfected just-in-time cut and assembly system. By the way, the just-in-time lean principle is one of the most often misunderstood and misapplied tools in lean terminology. Now, is this the best system for every condition? Is the just-in-time tool being used effectively?

Labor savings is normally the biggest point of this four-man team configuration. So, how many people are you saving? Let us agree that any linear saw that is or is not linked to the truss table could be paired with an automated lumber retrieval system.

Having one person on the linear saw is not the issue in this setup. It comes down to how many linear saws you have and the material movement toward each of the assembly workstations. Matching one linear saw for each assembly workstation is an expensive investment and needs further consideration of other factors. Nor is the factor of an auto puck system on the table a condition of this type of configuration. One could have auto pucks with or without this pairing of the linear saw with each workstation.

Point #1 - Pairing the linear saw with each assembly table and using a chain or roller system to move the cut material to each assembly table will reduce the labor count by 1/3 of a person or 1/4 of a person. For example, if one would have a person moving the cut material using carts, one should expect this person to keep up with at least 3 or 4 build teams on a full-time basis. This means, so far, the true reduction is at best 1/3 of a single crew person.

Point #2 - Where does the conveyor system position the cut lumber every time? Is it all along the span of the truss, so that each of the pieces requires only a few steps for placement and carts can be positioned with ease? An example is if the top and bottom chords (T1 & B1) are positioned on the left end of the span, and the last chords are positioned on the other end of the truss span, which would mean less walking and therefore fewer man-minutes per unit. Or is all the material being positioned in the center of the span, no matter the span of the truss, which would mean more walking and therefore more man-minutes per truss the longer the truss span? There is too much walking the longer the spans with this system.

Point #3 - Having a three-person build crew versus adding additional personnel can be a true hindrance when pairing the linear saw with each build workstation. Most linear saws cannot consistently cut more than what a three-person crew can assemble (called line balance in industrial engineering). TDC has yet to conduct a time study involving a single automated linear saw feeding the stock pieces and cutting each piece while averaging 400 pieces per hour with precision cutting. The one linear saw coming close to that output has an accuracy of +/-1/4”, which is not recommended by TDC (see linear saw performance report offered by TDC). Knowing that what if you have a run quantity of 40 trusses with a span of 55 feet? To maximize the gross dollars per hour or day, one needs to add personnel to the assembly team so that more trusses per hour can be produced. More personnel equal more people to move material onto the table to assemble each truss more quickly. With a 55-foot truss, one could easily have five or even six people assembling that run of trusses. If one did add personnel to the assembly workstation beyond the three or four-person team, the linear saw’s output would be exceeded. Limiting the output of the assembly workstation is not a proper use of the just-in-time lean principle. The goal of the company should be maximizing the gross margin dollars per day and not getting blinded by reducing the number of personnel at each workstation in the hope of reducing labor cost. One can increase the number of crew and yet still maintain or reduce labor cost per unit with added efficiencies.

Point #4 - If more than two personnel are removing the lumber from the linear saw’s live deck system, they can be in each other’s way. How can three or more personnel remove long lumber from a single point without being in each other’s way? The answer is they cannot. However, if multiple carts are positioning the lumber along the span of the truss, it could be much easier for multiple people to move material onto the table from any point along the span.

Point #5 - Regarding a linear saw versus an automated five-blade component saw, they each have unique roles. Cutting the material needed for a run of one-one-one is the realm of the linear saw. But cutting a much greater quantity run is easily done more quickly by the auto five-blade saw so that the greater the quantity needed, the more noticeable the difference between the two types of saws. If the quantity run on the table exceeds the breakeven process time of a linear saw versus a fiveblade component saw, why would you think the linear saw works in all conditions for every build table? The answer is it does not, and this is especially true for large-span trusses with large run quantities.

Point #6 - A linear saw can reduce the lumber cut waste by batching and combining different cuts of various pieces (lumber optimization). However, this cannot be easily done when the linear saw is only cutting the trusses as the trusses are being built. To maximize the assembly time, theoretically one would only cut a quantity of one every time, no matter the run quantity, thereby losing the lumber optimization benefits of the linear saw. Otherwise, the truss assemblers must sort all the lumber at the table after waiting for the entire quantity run to be cut, which would be a huge time-wasting mistake.

Point #7 – Pairing a linear saw with each workstation creates such a rigid system that, if one part of the system fails, the entire system comes to a standstill. A single burnt motor, lost drive shaft key or computer failure and the entire workstation comes to a complete stop until every position is working again. Whether it is a brand new linear saw or an older one, they all break down.

No experienced industrial engineer worth his/her salt would ever design a process without allowing for flexibility to keep the work flowing during unforeseen events.

When does the pairing of a linear saw with each workstation make sense? It is simply when the quantity run is the lowest, such as one-one-one, and the span is not so great that it would make sense to add more assemblers to the workstation. The greater the quantity run and the greater the span, the less it makes sense to pair a linear saw with every build workstation. One configuration of equipment is simply not the best for all conditions.

So Who Exactly is Responsible for Lumber Quality?

I

n the United States, we are blessed with an abundance of quality building materials we may chose to use while fabricating our wood truss products. As long as we are able to confidently predict lumber values and our truss design software has the proper values entered, we can be assured a quality product is produced. Or can we?

Lumber manufacturers strive to evaluate lumber in the most economical, practical ways in order to compete in the market place. Their reputation depends upon sound methods and procedures. In order to stay in business, they must meet demand and meet or exceed quality standards. The lumber producer, however, is not the ultimate decision maker in determining what gets used in the truss. This is the responsibility of the component manufacturer.

In addition to verifying grade stamps, lumber traceability, and qualifications, the component manufacturer must further evaluate the suitability of any given member. Careful inspection and evaluation must happen with each piece. Lumber soundness is sometimes missed or is not apparent during lumber manufacturing. If defects exist, often times the damage occurs while processing the component. Thorough understanding must exist within the workforce to be able to make good decisions.

What are some of the hidden defects that might exist? In this article, let’s address one of the more subtle issues that is sometimes overlooked. While it’s a quality attribute analyzed during grading, grain pattern is very important to sound lumber. Short grain conditions can exist where the lumber while growing makes abrupt changes in grain direction. This can cause difficult to identify issues with strength. The photo illustration is an example of a short grain failure. The problem did not manifest itself until 30 years of service. Could the truss manufacturer have caught this problem before the truss was used? Probably not. Attic conditions exacerbated the strength of the lumber at the defect due to the drying of the lumber in high attic temperatures over time. Fortunately in this case redundancy in adjoining components carry the applied loads as this component shown failed. Repetitive bending, system design protected us from catastrophic failure. Despite careful inspection, sometimes these defects are not identifiable, however, understanding short grain characteristics is an important aspect to keep in mind when determining quality.

O

ur journey through the various waste topics in Lean brings us to the final letter in our series on TIMWOODS: Skills. Many companies, managers, and supervisors forget when improving their operations to look at their team and review how their skills are being used, or in this case wasted, while making continual improvements to their operations.

Our friend, Tim Woods, has helped us focus on the wastes of Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over-Production, Over-Processing, and Defects. Skills, though, are often overlooked at Component and Millwork Manufacturers as well as Lumber Dealers and other building industry distributors. If you recall other articles I have written, I have talked about the importance of developing our associates, of mentoring and educating. This really is a long-term continual journey, thus why we see Skills wasted in our operations.

What is the Waste of Skills As defined by the Toyota Way Fieldbook, Skills represents underutilized capabilities, losing time, delegating tasks with inadequate training, ideas, improvements, and learning opportunities by not engaging or listening to your employees.

Underutilized skills is generally driven by the skills required to achieve the action required. If those skills are doing a task that a lower-skilled associate could achieve with the same outcome, then process time is being wasted.

It is important to understand that this should be considered in the sense of process time—thus the process is to understand where the burden of the higher-skilled associates can be reduced by the lower-skilled associates. For example, if an assembler is stacking material on a cart at the saw when they could be focused on production of a product, then it is wasteful of his limited resource.

How the Waste of Skill Occurs in the LBM/Component Industry Practically every area of our industry can show us a waste of skills. Many companies simply are not spending the time/resources to improve their teams. Some examples include: • Training your sales team on product knowledge, building science knowledge, etc. Owners/Managers should expect their sales team to know how to help their customers, have the ability to review building plans and provide value added suggestions, know the products they are working with, or even suggest an alternative product (wall panels, composite walls, panelization, etc.). If your sales team becomes the one stop key individual/vendor for your customer, you will see increased margins, and increased efficiency in the sales process.

• Training and improving the knowledge of your Component Technicians is vital not only to eliminating waste in mistakes or omissions, but also in increasing the efficient use of their time to produce the work you expect in a timely fashion. Too many times we hire a designer, get them going on our specific specs/details or the way we process work; but then it seems to stop there. A common answer I hear so often from Owners and Managers is that they just do not have time to train their technicians. But you have to take this time, even if it is an hour a week, if you want top caliber technicians who are always focused on value engineered solutions, etc. I suggest often that the technician team get together (even remotely) at least 30 minutes a week. • Training your team in Lean skills and knowledge should be very important to you. You cannot rely on just one individual in the operation to lead your lean efforts. You can see throughout our series where everyone plays a part in the continual improvement process.

Beyond Just Training How are you using your Human Resources team or associate?

I often see this position used only to onboard new employees, process payroll, and handle other HR functions. But with your HR associate and your supervision team, you should be continually developing all employees and in the process discovering other skills they may have.

It occurs many times where you hire an assembler or forklift operator to pick a job and then one day they let you know that they have other skills you are not using. And in a tight job market, this may occur as they are leaving for another opportunity that has provided them the chance to use that hidden skill. By coaching and developing our associates and interacting with them on Gemba walks, you will fast discover there are other hidden talents on your team that you can use to enhance the operation and improve profitability. Unlocking these hidden skills/talents requires managers and supervisors to recognize that their role as “supervisor” also means coach and mentor.

Best Practice Tip One of the aspects of the work I do with customers is encouraging the use of technology to put information in the hands of associates and managers/supervisors in the field, on the production floor, or in the yard. Tablets are becoming more prevalent and have the ability to keep your team up-to-date with changing information, or simply to provide information and move you to a paperless system. But with this comes damage to tablets. A good best practice would be to encase the tablet with one of the several products on the market to protect them.

I am not advocating any particular brand, but there are several on the market now. I saw the one pictured here in my doctor’s office. So stop worrying about tablets being prone to damage and get a protective cover for them. Your team will be more efficient with the information at their fingertips and have a lot less paper.

In 2016, the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) proposed to significantly lower the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of wood dust from 5 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) to 1 mg/m3. Earlier this year the Cal/OSHA Standards Board considered that proposal. However, after testimony from the American Wood Council (AWC), supported by a broader coalition, the Board rejected the staff recommendation.

While softwood manufacturing did not appear to be significantly impacted by the proposed reduction, the consensus of AWC member companies was that it was an issue with potential precedential impacts. An informal survey of industry manufacturers had indicated that almost all could comply with a 2 mg/m3 threshold.

As wood dust is a key AWC member issue, the organization had been engaged in the California process for several years, building a coalition of interested trade associations. All joined in providing extensive comments to Cal/OSHA and some later met with them in-person. Additionally, AWC testified at a public meeting of the Standards Board, providing an extensive presentation on both technical feasibility and problems with using historical references to support a PEL, as had been proposed by Cal/OSHA. At the end, the Board chair voted against the proposal, stating that it did not show adequate proof of feasibility.

Following additional discussions, Cal/OSHA then agreed with industry and quickly restarted rulemaking on a PEL equal to 2 mg/m3.

“Cal/OSHA staff had not generated sufficient information to claim the 1 milligram per cubic meter level was feasible to achieve,” said AWC Chief Scientist Stewart Holm, who testified.

Cal/OSHA has now finalized this rulemaking with the 2 mg/m3 dust value in place. The effective date of the rule was July 1, 2017.

Is Your Organization Ready for Change?

he pace of today’s business requires agility and the ability to change. But beware, “change” can be difficult on you, your staff, and your company. Sometimes change is accomplished with small steps, other times you might have to destruct the very structures that have taken your company to its current point of achievements.

This article will help you clarify your reason to take on the difficult task of change and to assess whether your employees are prepared to follow you.

Are you ready for change? Perhaps you can relate to one of these problems: 1. Work has become the obsession of your life.

2. It’s just not fun anymore.

3. Complex decisions are becoming increasingly difficult.

4. You have become increasingly less effective over time and may be suffering from burnout.

5. The stress to address a new challenge is greater than maintaining the status quo, even if the company sales are not hitting projections, profits are below yours or industry expectations, or other inefficiencies are not being addressed.

If any of these 5 concepts or other pain points have struck a chord, then you may have reached a tipping point. Stay the course or accept the need to change.

You have come to the healthy realization that change will bring benefits. But what about your team — are they ready for change? Only when (and if) the key members understand and are ready to accept the changes you seek can everyone take the first steps toward implementing change.

Safe Lifting Techniques

The back is a network of fragile ligaments, discs, and muscles which can easily be thrown out of order. The back’s complex design breaks down when it’s forced to perform activities it was not designed to do. Lifting with the back twisted or bent just begs for a pulled muscle or ruptured disc. One sure way to risk injuring the back is to lift heavy or bulky loads improperly or unassisted. Never be afraid to ask for help with loads that you know you cannot lift safely. Lift with good sense and a little extra help from a co-worker or mechanical aid when necessary.

If you decide you are capable of lifting a light load, make sure you lift correctly.

Move in so that your feet are close to the base of the object to be lifted.

Face the object squarely. Bend your knees and squat over the item to be lifted. In this position, the back gets added lifting strength and power from the legs and arms.

Move up close to the item, because the backbone must act as a supporting column, and it takes the least strain close in.

Tilt the item on edge with its long axis straight up so that the center of the weight is as high as possible above the ground.

Still squatting, the feet should be set with legs pointed right at the load, with the back straightened, the worker may then grasp the load with both arms and slowly stand up with it, pushing up with the leg muscles. If you can’t lift slowly, you can’t lift safely.

A good way to learn the right from the wrong way to lift is to practice lifting correctly a few times. You will notice that the correct way to lift is the easiest way to lift the load, with the least strain and awkwardness.

To lift the wrong way will, over time, cause injury and pain. The back can be damaged quickly but can take a long time to heal.

Remote Designer’s Glass Ceiling Thomas McAnally The

T

he Glass Ceiling is not just a gender or education-based obstacle, it can sometimes be created by career path choices. In our industry, a new Glass Ceiling is coming from Truss Designers deciding to pursue a Home-Based (Remote) position. By remote, we’re talking about at least 4 hours away from the plant or on-site office. While the perks of working from home are many, the job can kill advancement opportunities.

The largest concern my employers have about hiring remote designers is team cohesion. Even more than the team at the moment, however, is how that team will develop over time and how remote positions will affect advancement too. It’s hard to be promoted to Design Manager or a Design Team Supervisor position if you’re not in the office on a regular basis. “Where is my next Design Manager coming from” is a common question employers ask when I suggest hiring a remote designer. They want someone who they can get to know and mentor, see how they interact with people, and hopefully promote in the future.

If your goal is to retire as a remote truss designer in 5–25 years, no worries. Just be one of the best, go to work for a reputable company with benefits for your state (please not as a 1099 contractor for just one company), and hope your boss values you as much as in-office counterparts. Also, hope that your value isn’t diminished by the mass of people looking to make that jump too. Supply and demand will likely drive remote compensation down in the near future.

Hope, for example, that when things get slow, you keep getting work at the same level as the in-office designers do.

Hope that when it comes time to lay someone off, like in the slow season, it is merit-based, not because someone seen every day is perceived to be more loyal, more valuable, or a friend.

If you are hoping to grow and someday be promoted to a management position, or looking to maximize compensation, or build relationships that can result in better job security, the advantage is still in favor of the in-office designer. While not all remote designers are left hanging, it is a possibility that always will be present. Sure, the threat can be less with the more time that you spend on-site, so if you can get to the office each week your options may improve. And, you could resume full-time work in the office in the future. But, it can likely be a step back if others have been there for years, working their way up.

If you want to consider remote as an option, maybe discuss both options with your employer to see if the decision you make will end up with a glass ceiling. Introducing the New and Improved Simpson Strong-Tie® Strong-Wall® Bracing Selector

By Caleb Knudson, R&D Engineer It’s been said that the World Wide Web is the wave of the future. Okay, maybe this is slightly outdated news, as it’s been 25 years since Bill Gates penned his internet tidal-wave memorandum, but it’s a good lead-in to this topic – web apps. More specifically, those apps that have been developed to address the wall-bracing requirements defined in the International Residential Code® (IRC). Designers and engineers have no doubt noticed that, over the last several code cycles, the wall-bracing provisions in the IRC have become increasingly complex. To help navigate these requirements and calculate the required bracing length for a given wall line, Simpson Strong-Tie introduced the Wall-BracingLength Calculator (WBLC) a few years back, as discussed in an earlier blog post. I’ll also mention that the WBLC has since been updated to the 2015 IRC.

Those familiar with the wall-bracing provisions in the IRC know that there are twelve intermittent wallbracing methods and four continuous-sheathing methods to address wall-bracing requirements. Each of these methods may be used in most applications, and, while some provide advantages over others, the codebased methods provide Designers with quite a bit of flexibility. However, there may be cases where the sitespecific conditions are beyond the scope of the IRC, or there just isn’t enough available full-height wall space to accommodate the required wall-bracing length.

These cases are most likely to occur at large window openings or at garage fronts.

Let’s take the following example of a house on Lake Washington – assuming the house is being designed in accordance with the IRC. Presumably, one might prefer to have unobstructed lake views, which of course means lots of large picture windows and not much room left for braced wall panels. Let’s also suppose you’ve got a brand-new Chris Craft that you’d like to protect against the weather when it’s not in the water – this means wide garage doors and, again, not much room for conventional wall bracing.

So what do we do now? Thankfully, the International Residential Code provides some guidance. Section R301.1.3 states that when a building, or portion thereof, is outside the scope of the IRC, the element(s) may be designed in accordance with accepted engineering practice. The code goes on to state that the extent of the design shall be such that the engineered element(s) are compatible with the performance of conventional methods prescribed in the code.

get the lake views and wide garage we want. The next option, and one we’ll focus on here, is the code-approved prefabricated Simpson Strong-Tie® Strong-Wall® shearwall.

In an earlier blog post, as previously mentioned, we introduced the Strong-Wall Bracing Selector (SWBS) and defined just how we determine equivalence to conventional bracing methods. We further described the benefit of using the selector in conjunction with the Wall-Bracing-Length Calculator (WBLC). To refresh your memory, when Designers start with the WBLC to determine required wall-bracing-lengths for up to seven parallel wall lines, they can export those bracing lengths as well as project and jobsite information directly to the SWBS with the click of a button. The SWBS will then provide a list of Strong-Wall panels that provide an equivalent bracing length, evaluate their anchorage requirements, and return a list of preengineered anchor solutions for a variety of foundation types.

On to the present: We just launched the Strong-Wall Bracing Selector web app version 2.0, and there are a few new features worth noting.

First, I’ll mention that all Strong-Wall solutions have been evaluated according to the 2015 I-Codes. Next, and hopefully this doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, the original wood Strong-Wall shearwall (SW) is being phased out with guaranteed availability through December 31, 2018. In light of this planned obsolescence, we have removed the SW solutions from the latest version of the bracing selector.

Here’s the good news – and this is big: We’ve now added the new Strong-Wall wood shearwall (WSW) to the app and recommend this as a replacement for the SW in all applications.

In the interim, while the original wall is still available, version 1.0 of the bracing selector app may be used if an SW bracing solution is required.

Lastly, we’ve provided the Designer with a bit more flexibility and control over the Strong-Wall bracing solutions provided by the app. If you recall, version 1.0 provided a solution using the minimum possible number of Strong-Wall panels to satisfy the bracing length requirement. Designers may still select a solution using the minimum number of panels, but they may also select the exact number of Strong-Wall panels to satisfy their wall-bracing-length requirements. Typically, it’s desirable to address the bracing requirement with the minimum number of Strong-Wall shearwall panels possible. Sometimes, however, it may be advantageous to increase the number of panels used, in order to decrease the Strong-Wall panel width used for a solution or to reduce anchorage requirements, i.e., lesser footing dimensions and anchor embedment depths. Stated a little differently, we’re providing the option to find the right balance between the braced wall panel design and the anchorage design – i.e., the Goldilocks zone for prescriptive wall bracing.

So now that we’ve reviewed just why a Designer may need to specify a Strong-Wall shearwall in prescriptive applications and how the Wall-Bracing-Length Calculator and Strong-Wall Bracing Selector web apps help to navigate this process, we’re interested to see what you think. News & Announcements Redesigned Strong-Rod™ System Components from Simpson Strong-Tie Reduce Installation Time and Costs Pleasanton, Calif. – October 25, 2017 – To lower construction cost and streamline installation time on mid-rise wood construction projects, Simpson Strong-Tie has launched the new Strong-Rod Systems rod-to-steel-beam connector (ATS-SBC). The new, design-based connector forms part of a continuous-rod solution that helps wood-frame structures resist shearwall-overturning forces and uplift forces resulting from seismic activity or wind events.

The rod-to-steel-beam connector has been redesigned to reduce the overall number of rod system components for a simpler, more efficient installation that saves contractors both time and money. The company’s engineering support team works with customers to design the most economical rod-run holdown solutions that are compliant with all relevant seismic and high-wind building codes. Among rod tiedown solutions, the Strong-Rod System has the lowest possible deflection holdown values while meeting the structural design demand loads.

The new ATS-SBC replaces the older field-assembled half-cage system with a complete part featuring a rod already affixed to the bearing plate. It also features a weldable plate for attachment to steel beams in the field. Where the previous system comprised seven individual components, the rod-to-steel-beam connector consists of just two.

The rod-to-steel-beam connector is available in six different rod diameters ranging from 5/8” to 1 ½”, all 12” in height. The bearing plate ranges in size from 3” x 3” x 3/4” to 7” x 3” x 1 ¾”. Fillet welds – with weld lengths provided by the project Designer – must be used to attach the ATS-SBC to the steel beam according to the project design. Allowable tension capacity for the rod-to-steel-beam connector starts at 13,805 lb. for the smallest model and reaches 82,835 lb. for the largest.

The rod-to-steel-beam connector complements the woodbeam plate (WBP) that was launched in 2016. Available in 10 different sizes, the WBP is used where the rod run is attached to a wood beam, and eliminates the need for more costly isolator nuts and coupling take-up devices. Two SDS Heavy-Duty Connector screws (provided with the kit) are installed through the WBP fastener holes and into the bottom of the wood beam to support the self-weight of the bearing plate and rod above, sparing Designers and installers the need for an additional smaller bearing plate and nut on the top side of the beam.

This unique connection also provides a fixed point at the very bottom of the rod run, allowing the take-up devices above to address shrinkage of all the wood framing including any from the wood beam itself.

HBI, the workforce development arm of NAHB, just got an important assist as it gears up to help prepare the local workforce for reconstruction in Texas and Florida hard-hit by hurricanes Harvey and Irma: Norbord Inc.’s recent donation of $1 million to HBI will help train individuals in the building industry to rebuild.

October is Careers in Construction Month, an important time for all of us in the housing industry to increase public awareness about the great jobs available in residential construction and related trade professions.

NAHB recently launched a Careers in the Construction Trades section on its website to highlight the opportunities in six popular trades. We encourage businesses and HBAs to share this information with educators, students and their parents.

If you are looking for ideas to highlight construction careers in your community, check out the Careers in Construction Month Toolkit. Some activities include:  Open Up Your Site: Work with your local middle or high school to host a field trip for students to visit your construction site. Arrange for students to tour the site and gather first-hand information about what it takes to have a successful career in construction.  Host a Job Shadow Day: Invite students to spend the entire day at your business to learn various aspects of the industry and the range of career opportunities. Learn how Toll Brothers hosted a national job shadow day.  Honor a Local Educator: Select a day to recognize a local teacher for their contribution to developing the future construction workforce. Honor instructors in high schools, universities, job corps centers and apprenticeship training programs.

“HBI is planning training programs that will expand current HBI programs and set up new ones in Texas and Florida over the next two years. FEMA estimates billions of dollars of damage in the devastated areas. With the current labor shortage in the building industry, we know we need even more skilled workers to take on this challenge.

HBI’s 50 years of career technical training and our Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training position us well,” Courson said.

APA Updates Build a Better Home Series for Builders and Designers Updated guides, a revised series of CAD details, and new website pages are part of a comprehensive update of the Build a Better Home tools published this month by APA – The Engineered Wood Association. The Build a Better Home series is designed to provide builders and designers with construction guidelines they need to protect homes against damaging moisture infiltration.

Preventing moisture from getting trapped in the building envelope (roofs, walls, and foundation) is key to constructing long-lasting homes that stay dry and comfortable.

“Moisture in the building envelope can lead to a number of performance issues,” said Field Services Division Director Tom Kositzky. “By following proper design recommendations, builders can reduce moisture-related problems and take one more step toward building wood-frame homes that last the test of time.”

News & Announcements Simpson Strong-Tie Launches New Microsite for OSHA Silica Dust Regulations Pleasanton, Calif. – October 4, 2017 – In response to the new Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations to protect workers from exposure to respirable crystalline silica dust, Simpson Strong-Tie, an industry leader in engineered structural connectors, anchors and fasteners, has launched a new silica dust microsite to help contractors, builders, engineers and other building professionals safely comply with the new construction standards.

Effective September 23, 2017, OSHA has mandated an 80% reduction in jobsite exposure to silica dust, a byproduct from drilling into concrete and concrete blocks. BCMC Athletics – A Perfectly Roaring Success

MiTek Industries, Inc. Look at these folks in the picture (I am not naming names) and tell me that www.mii.com they look like a bunch of sterling athletes. None of them excels at running, all are just trying to maintain reasonable conditioning, while having a little fun. One has lost 30 pounds in the last year when he started running. Another is on a path to do his first marathon. Another signed up with Orange Theory and can work out vigorously nearly anywhere he stops on the road.

Working to lose weight, or just to keep from gaining weight, is a good reason to get outside and exercise. Walking or cycling is a fine way to start. On a perfect day like Thursday of BCMC, we enjoyed traversing the beautiful pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River, within sight of the casinos in Iowa. And into a roaring wind on Tuesday of BCMC we had a tough bike ride, but folks of all skill levels finished the ride. When we got back to the Show, we knew we had done something good for ourselves.

“The toughest step to good fitness is your first step out of bed,” a wise person once said.

Likewise, the first step you take to exercise will be difficult, and your body may bark for a time, but after a couple of months, you’ll know you’re doing a good thing. It’s never too late to start, and please join us walking, running, or cycling at BCMC 2018 in Milwaukee.
