Celebrating an Industry Legend Anna L. Stamm Director of Communications and Marketing Component Manufacturing Advertiser.

A quick internet search of the term “legendary” will reveal this among the possible definitions: “remarkable enough to be famous; very well known.” Unfortunately, our industry has lost another member who was very well known, very well respected, and very well liked.

Remembering Dwight Hikel Dwight Hikel of Shelter Systems Limited in Westminster, MD passed away in February, and there is no doubt that our industry has said goodbye to a pioneer whose work and success will last long into the future. Ask anyone who knew or knew of him, they will reply that he was many things: smart, generous, committed . . . the list goes on and on.

Many of his peers were able to celebrate his success in combination with his family at the impressive 40th Anniversary of Shelter Systems Limited last fall. As Carl Schoening reported in his article in our October issue: [In September, we] attended to the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Shelter Systems in Westminster, MD. We saw a lot of longtime friends and met a few new ones. Dwight, Joe, and Linda really know how to celebrate. There were government officials in attendance along with Shelter employees and invited guests from all over the country. It is a remarkable feat for any business to be that successful for that many years. We talked about it, and there is less than a handful that have been around that long, been profitable, and still maintain the same ownership.

My most sincere congratulations to Shelter Systems. Being invited to that event is humbling.

Shelter is a very special business. They now have third generation employees working and moving the business forward. It is so unheard of and rightly recognized by the Maryland Secretary of Commerce. I sat front row as Dwight gave a tearful, moving speech about how he managed to get into the business and the people who supported his efforts (many were in the audience).

But, Dwight recognized that his part was overshadowed by all of the great people who work for him and have worked for him in the past. Dwight called them the “Starting Lineup” and said without them he couldn’t have made it. The commitment of everyone who has been associated with Shelter Systems made them the incredibly successful and resilient company they are.

Certainly Dwight, Linda, and Joe made all of the pieces fit together and worked really hard to make Shelter what it is, but I thought it very gracious for Dwight to recognize his employees for their efforts. That is the kind of people we have in this industry and what has been the greatest pleasure for me.

A Lasting Impression Moving forward, it’s good to know that many people will continue to benefit from the hard work and dedication Dwight brought to all of his endeavors. And that is what truly makes him a legend. His success isn’t measured by a dollar sign attached to his bank account but by the lasting impression he has left with everyone around him. It is the success of a very good man.

GROWING INTEREST – WALL PANELS Our team is often asked how a single operator can produce over 1000 lineal feet of wall panels. The answer comes from both the process flow and the material flow. We know, when an operator leaves their workstation, production is lost. Production can be lost at their station as well as other positions. When they stop and talk, use the restroom, or even leave to gather materials, they are reducing the production output.

Square 1 Design & Spida work with each customer to build an individual solution for the specific factory. In the following three layouts, each system delivers the material to the Spida Extruder Operator. These

systems minimize reasons to travel throughout the factory which cost production time.

In all cases, the plates are delivered directly behind the Spida Extruder Operator. In the first layout, the minor subcomponents are manufactured to the side the extruder, set on a conveyor, and ultimately delivered to the front of the Spida Extruder Operator. This limits the need to leave the station, limits the need for lifting and twisting, and contributes to the increased production. The rough openings are then subsequently placed inside the wall.

In the second layout, the customer was limited by floor space. Therefore, the minor subcomponents are manufactured above the extruder and delivered to the Spida Extruder Operator via a sloped conveyor. Again, there is little reason for the Spida Extruder Operator to leave the station. It is easy to point out here the roles of each person. Extruder Operator is the workhorse behind the operation. He controls the speed at which rough openings are installed, walls are produced, and how quickly they need to be sheathed.

Finally, a higher production facility may have multiple lines, as seen in the third layout. Here the rough openings are produced on the left side, transferred to the Spida Extruder Operator, and installed inside the wall earlier in the process. While the minor subcomponents are delivered by a curved conveyor again placing studs, “C” & “L” profiles directly in front of the Spida Extruder Operator. Here we are also showing the location of the plates on carts, inside the Spida Extruder Rails.

The Passing of Greatness

I said I wouldn’t write again, but I felt compelled to, at the very least, commemorate the passing of a great human being.

In the past few weeks, many of you have read articles about the passing of Dwight Hikel. Dwight was something pretty special.

Not just as a businessman or component manufacturer, but he was truly a great human and left quite a mark on all those he came in contact with. It is the kind of imprint that changes you forever.

I had met Dwight in passing over the years, but never really got to know him until 2001. I was trying to capture new business for the hardware company I was working for. My first impression was that he would be a hard sell. He was, but not for the reasons you may think. Dwight wasn’t challenging me to reduce prices or increase service. Dwight was challenging me to be a better version of myself. The only way I would get a win with Dwight was by going to a place I had never been before. I have had great mentors over the years, but my interactions with Dwight forced me to think in a way that was different. He wanted to do business with people he liked and that were like him. I had to be more confident and more knowledgeable than ever before. Dwight wanted my best effort.....every time.

Dwight set the stage for me to use my new skills in every facet of my life, as he had. Be better at everything you do and be confident that when you make a decision that it is the best decision. Embrace that decision and fight for your ideas and ideals. I learned to do that. Sometimes it shocked people. Sometimes it was on the unpopular side of an issue. Sometimes I had to endure negative reactions, but I would stand for what I believed regardless of the consequences. Dwight instilled in me through our business interactions a new way to be me.

Dwight was a leader in this industry from the beginning. I have friends who worked with him in his earliest days in the industry and all have said the same things about him. His energy was the highest, his passion never waned, and his joy was unquenchable.

Dwight found joy in many things. Dwight worked extremely hard to move a fledgling industry into the mainstream. Then, with the help of his wife and son, he built the prototype truss plant that all truss plants aspire to be. Dwight took chances and the new plant was a chance taken based on his decision to try something new. He stood by the decision and made Shelter Systems the greatest show on earth. Things weren’t always easy, but he stuck with his plan and made success bend to his will.

I attended the 40th anniversary of Shelter Systems. My take-away may have been different than some. While important people with titles were pouring accolades on Dwight, he was recognizing all of the people who helped him achieve his dreams. He talked about his employees most fondly. Dwight expressed that, without all of those people who did the hard, daily work, Shelter Systems couldn’t exist. Dwight had inspired each of them to be the best they could be. Each employee who I spoke with cared about Shelter Systems and cared deeply for Dwight.

competitors, customers, and industry leaders. People traveled from across the United States to pay their last respects to Dwight Hikel. The service is one that won’t be soon forgotten. Speakers took the stage to talk about first meeting Dwight and the impact he immediately had on them. Each story sounded so much like my own. Dwight had drawn the best out of each of them, convincing them that his idea was the right one and how we could all be successful together.

Images from his childhood touched everyone. Images from his early adulthood revealed the same determination that we had all experienced. The video showed many times with family and friends cashing “fun tickets” as Dwight referred to the good times.

Dwight’s son, Joe, told stories of many fun tickets being cashed.

Dwight worked hard, but loved to have fun.

Dwight always expressed the greatest pride when talking about his family, his business, and his fun! That light in his eyes never dimmed. He was always looking for the next excuse to promote someone else. Dwight treated everyone with respect.

This came through in everything he did. It was one of the many ways he disarmed people to win them over to his ideas and gain their respect.

Dwight was the man who got SBCA involved with Operation Finally Home. Dwight had many passions and this was one of them. He was a believer that we owe a debt to these soldiers who fight and die for our freedom. The linear saw and auto-jigging reduce plant labor but they don’t increase the selling price of components, like the Blueprint Robotics panelization does, in spades. And, as more plants automate, component sales dollars may actually be eroded by price-cutting in a flat housing market. Is it time for CM’s to differentiate themselves by adding value to components with the closed-panelization model? Clues to the success of this technology are found in the DC-Baltimore suburbs not far from the Blueprint facility.

Established home builders first began considering closed wall panels to counter the threat that large industrialized housing entities would displace their site-built methods. When the factory housing industry nearly collapsed in the severe mid-1970s recession, and the economy began to climb out of that recession, Ed Ryan and his brother Jim began experimenting in the rapidly growing metroDC market. Ed’s company, Ryan Homes, had mastered fabrication of “open” wall panels and trusses in multiple plants in the East.

Fabricating “closed” wall panels seemed the next logical step, and Ed set up a large factory in suburban Maryland called “Closed-Wall Thurmont” or CWT. Dick Marriott, current MiTek President, helped install the truss equipment there in 1980. Jim Ryan’s company, Ryland Homes, built an even larger modular housing plant about 25 miles from his brother’s. Joe Hikel, SBCA Past President, was assembling components nearby to Ryland, at the plant owned by his father, the late Dwight Hikel.

Yet, by the early 1990s, Ryan’s CWT plant, now NVR Building Products, and Ryland’s plant, now Universal Forest Products, had both reverted to open panels and trusses. Joe Hikel’s plant, Shelter Systems, no longer builds wall panels. Why did this wall technology fail? According to the late Fred Schenkel, former BFS Manufacturing VP, foundation problems defeated closed wall panels. When Fred worked for Ryland, he continually faced the daunting task of adjusting electrical wiring, plumbing, and finishes to compensate for foundation gaps.

In the late 1990s, Bill Pulte, chairman of the namesake company, created Pulte Home Sciences to discover factory alternatives to field labor. After 7 years of R&D in Detroit, he constructed a huge facility in DC’s Virginia suburbs in 2003. Inside this factory, concrete foundations were sectionalized and pre-cast. Wall sections were built with SIPS, Structural Insulated Panel Systems, and floor panels incorporated duct work. Yet this facility closed as housing spiraled downward in 2007.

Do housing’s ups and downs preclude building closed wall panels? Do we have enough housing growth to assure their feasibility? Our industry is currently operating in a nearly flat housing economy. The 2017’s projected 1.2 Million housing starts are barely half the levels which had stimulated the industrial housing industry of the 1970s and the closed-panelization of the 1980s. In spite of these drawbacks, jobsite labor shortages continue to create opportunities which may be better addressed in the factory. In addition to the Blueprint Robotics facility, a factory in Central Florida has begun employing European automation that may point to the future . . .

In the wood truss component industry, we have the independents, who are not associated with lumberyards, and then we have those who are owned by lumberyards. What I found striking is that the lumberyard owned and operated component manufacturers (CMs) consistently make far less money than the independently owned and operated CMs. Far too many lumberyards own unsuccessful CMs. These operations usually have a single digit net profit and are often considered to be a problem area for their company. However, the CM division should be a huge cash cow. When it comes to the CM net profit averages, it is common to make up 15%+ EBITDA in normal markets, in which the sales exceed a two-week lead time. Many independents garner in the 20+ EBITDA in good years. The main difference between the two is management philosophies and culture. If you want to garner better net profits, the best route is to embrace the lean manufacturing (LM) practices to create the environment that will result in better net profits.

LM practices should be thought of like a big tool box filled with different tools to uncover and fix problem areas in your company. Better yet, LM helps you improve areas you did not know that could be improved upon. These important tools have names—5S, just-in-time, kaizen (continuous improvement) and much more. What is more important is the philosophy and culture change that happens within every organization. Most companies that fail to embrace LM do so because they truly cannot let go of their ingrained ways of thinking and management practices. Failure of implementing LM principles to garner real, positive results starts at the top and ends at the very bottom of the organization.

LM principles are more than your tools. LM changes the culture of the company because management and the employees are embracing continuous improvement in every area beyond the manufacturing. Every area such as employee retention, communication, management, training, sales and project processes are all constantly refined and improved for the company. In other words, you may not be able to use one of the coined LM terms, such as 5S, but your company can refine and improve a previously un-improvable area. A common example is when a company human resource department stands in the way of a needed pay scale change for the manufacturing group. Too often a company policy for the lumberyards may somehow be keeping the CM division from offering a pay scale adjustment or an incentive program. LM does not allow such short-sighted rulemaking to affect needed improvements.

Here is something that is not often stated openly about LM or the application of Six Sigma.

(Six Sigma is an offshoot of LM.) These LM philosophies and practices, which include Six Sigma, apply common sense to overcome the egos that have been preventing needed changes. Six Sigma allows companies to display statistical data to prove or disprove a given idea for a particular area. An example is stated in the January 7th 2015 ProSales article, “US LBM uses technology and training to blaze its growth path.” The article shows how this company had great results because their mindsets were changed by LM. One example is rearranging the lumberyard so that trucks could be loaded quicker: “A redesign of facilities according to lean management techniques that, at one yard, have reduced forklift driving distances by 30% for most loads, improved traffic flow, and cut labor distribution costs as a percentage of yard revenue by 23%.” Does this seem like common sense? Component manufacturing should be a cash cow, making lumberyards increased net profits – unfortunately most fall short. The failing net profits for most CMs are due primarily to company culture and management routines that inhibit the adoption of improved practices for that type of business.

Which has had a very positive effect on employee morale and therefore on speed, and quality, of production.

It has been a few years since his consultation, but even now we still occasionally look over the material he provided for making further improvements.

What is a better way to survey, inspect, and record data when making truss inspections?

When you write a letter or series of paragraphs, sometimes it’s difficult to proof the very thing you just wrote. Why is that?

Because you don’t approach it with a clean-slate perspective but with an expectation of what you think it says. Likewise in our industry, it’s often said that a better way to check a truss takeoff is to have someone else check the design because the on-looker will have a different perspective. Inspecting trusses for TPI compliance poses a similar issue.

Often we read the truss drawing and then look at the plates used. On occasion, we see what we just read rather than what we see.

Just like proofreading or reviewing a truss takeoff, the information sticks in our minds. It’s difficult to flush this data and give the review a clear reflection. It’s human nature. Because of this human fallacy, a great way to measure and record as-built information when inspecting trusses is to record data before comparing data. This can be done with all of the collected information.

For example, instead of looking at the drawing, look at the truss first; e.g., •

Identify the plate size, gauge, particulars, and then record that information at the joint without concentrating on what the shop drawing actually shows.

•

Make a measurement of the overall length, then record the dimension prior to reading it off the drawing.

•

When verifying the wood grade and size, look at the truss and record the lumber grade mark in the general location of the mark on the shop drawing. Note which side the grade mark was located prior to looking at the lumber requirements.

If you do the inspection in this order, the chances of overlooking an error will be greatly reduced.

After the data is recorded, the inspector can compare the as-built data with the actual data. Above is an example where some of these techniques have been employed. The data is a clear record of what was built and a reviewer can look at the inspection process and determine with the data shown that the inspection was accurate.

By the way, did you look at the sample truss? Did it fail? Knowing why something fails is the first step in correcting the process issue that allowed the error to happen.

When I got the plan for the Edwards Residence, a two story home in Midland, Texas, the Architect had already worked with a Structural Engineer to come up with a framing plan. I worked closely with Siboney Diaz-Sanchez with Overland Partners Architects to be sure that our truss designs would meet all of their design criteria. With OPA acting as a go-between, I also worked with Richard Manning with Smith Engineering Company to replace some of the specified framing conditions with trusses.

The structural plan called for a combination of trusses and conventional framing; namely they were planning to scab on a three and a half foot cantilever on the second floor and also scab on a six foot overhang on the roof.

“The cantilever on the second floor was at one corner of the house and cantilevered out two sides; this is always a complicated design.

Fortunately they had steel beams above to support the roof.”

There were several beams in the floor system that were to be carrying framing from above; the Builder (Terry and Coyet Copeland with JCC Partners) asked if it would be possible to replace them with girder trusses. To devise a solution, I utilized flat trusses (as opposed to a “normal” system 42 floor truss), replaced the beams with girders, and built the 2x10 cantilever into the system.

There was a large room (for mechanical and storage) above the second floor; it was called out to be conventionally framed. I pointed out that I could build that into the roof truss (and actually give them a larger space) and also build in the six foot 2x10 overhangs so they wouldn’t need to be scabbed on.

Working closely with the Architect, Engineer, and Builder, I was able to present my ideas for their review and approval and ultimately come up with a fully trussed floor and roof system for the whole house. Our salesman, Finus Nolte, was able to sell the package to the builder because the process eliminated the need for all but a small amount of field framing, thereby saving them time, materials, and money.

I had the privilege of walking the job site after the second floor had been set (they were framing the second floor walls when I was there) and took some pictures of the progress to that point. I don't get out to job sites often, but when I do, it's great to see firsthand how everything goes together in the field.

Our friend, TIM WOODS, has been busy in many LBM and component operations and, as we continue our series, he has been seen sweeping “Inventory” down several operations’ drains. Inventory is another waste word in our TIMWOODS acronym for the eight deadly wastes (Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over-Processing, Over-Production, Defects, and Skills). TIM WOODS keeps the focus on eliminating the time waste, thereby adding value in the process, eliminating process time, and reducing lead time.

While no one wants inventory going down the drain, many of us have just that – we may not see some of the hidden forms of the waste (muda) of Inventory. So what is Inventory Waste?

What kind of inventory that we carry can be considered waste?

•

Stock lumber, OSB, EWP products, glue-laminated products, steel, plates, etc.

•

WIP (work in progress) for millwork and component operations which is in excess of what’s needed to meet Just-in-Time production

•

Unnecessary inventory that accumulates before or after a process where continuous flow has not been achieved

•

Long change-over times

•

Excessive stock ordered for projects

•

Large batch sizes

•

Excessive designs which have not been reviewed/value engineered to maximize inventory

•

Lack of balance in work flow which forces inventory build-ups

•

Stagnant materials where associates are neglecting first in/first out inventory rotations

•

Finished goods which sit in your yard for long periods because you are not being paid.

The list could continue, but you should see the pattern – excess raw material, WIP, or finished goods causing longer lead times, these are wastes of Inventory.

How much is my inventory costing me?

When it comes to inventory, one thing each of us should clearly understand is that “cash is king.” When you tie up cash in inventory, it is not available in another part of the business and it is costing money. Every piece of product tied up in raw material, work in progress, or finished goods has a cost and, until it is actually sold, that cost is on us. In addition to the pure cost of your inventory, it adds many additional costs; inventory feeds many other wastes. Inventory has to be stored, it needs packaging, it has to be transported around the facility, it has to be administered in accounting, someone has to count it, it has the chance of being damaged during transport, and may even become obsolete. The waste of inventory also can hide many of the other wastes in your systems. Every piece of inventory you hold has a physical cost associated with it, and that cost is shouldered directly by you either from your cash or from borrowings for which you pay interest. When you look at it from this prospective, why even store inventory?

What are some of the causes of waste to watch for?

Overproduction How many times have you heard a peer or even one of your managers say, “this stack over here is just a ‘comfort stock’?”

We overproduce for a number of reasons, ranging from concerns about our suppliers to doubts about our productivity, our process, and even our own customers. This overproduction gives us a buffer for when things don’t go according to plan, because plans often go wrong. But, because this comfort stock is in place, the pain we were trying to prevent can cause pain elsewhere – money on our bottom line. The levels of inventory we sometimes keep are like the sea; if you drop the level, you begin to expose some of the rocks that are hidden below, and you have to act by removing them or reducing them so your ship (production or LBM movement of orders) can continue without being scuttled completely.

Large Batches Our industry constantly talks about what is the proper size of a batch. When you see a cart or a pallet loaded with a tremendous amount of material from the saws, you should be thinking about just what is in that batch. Are we combining like parts, are we sending multiple trusses to the table, how is it being stacked on the cart, etc.? Many times we see sawyers and catchers stacking multiple parts and trusses on a cart, but in a way that makes it a jumble puzzle for the assemblers when it comes to the table. We also see large batches of materials being moved around due to machine set-ups requiring us to run over-sized batches to ensure we make good use of our machines. When inventory is idled in the process stream, it is also costing us money. We make a similar argument to a builder when selling components because of their advantages over stick frame – faster, less time, less material, no waste, etc.

So why not strive for these advantages for ourselves?

Rejects How many piles of rejects have you seen in your yard when you are walking around?

You shake your head and say to yourself, “I’ve got to do something about that.” You ask your teams to recirculate as much of the material as they can, but these piles keep showing up everywhere. We call this waste by words such as shrink, downfall, etc., and, when it gets to the customer, we have to go out to replace or fix, it is even more costly. Our first line of defense in the yard is our team pulling raw material orders either to the truck or to the manufacturing plant/mill. But, even before that, we need to work with our suppliers to reduce the waste we receive – not only because of the loss of material, but also because of the labor time to process it.

These are just a few examples of the waste of inventory you should seek to find in your operations.

Once you have found a few of these examples in your operation or others, you need to go about the process of eliminating this inventory waste. Look at the manufacturing areas (millwork/component operation) and the lumber yard; look at each of the process/ cell areas in them and ensure that WIP does not build up between processes. Even staging in a lumber yard can be a delay or waste of inventory. Between our people, our processes, and our equipment at the end of the day, we want to ensure that we balance everything and prevent this unnecessary build-up of the inventory.

Let’s look at one method for eliminating waste: Just-in-Time (JIT). Just-in-Time production is one of the main principles of the lean manufacturing value flow process and it directly helps us address the causes behind inventory waste.

By using just-in-time concepts, you reduce the need for raw materials and work-inprocess, while finished goods inventories should be close to non-existent. A few of the just-in-time inventory advantages include: •

Minimal amounts of stagnant inventory and a high rate of inventory turnover keeps any items from remaining in stock and becoming obsolete.

•

Smaller batch runs allow for quicker cycles at the assembly tables and, in that “rare” instance of a customer change in schedule, it allows us to change the production schedule with greater flexibility to meet changes in customer demand.

•

Low inventory levels mean inventory holding costs are minimized, which is especially beneficial because many of our yards have limited space.

•

The company is investing far less cash in its inventory, since less inventory is needed.

•

Less inventory can be damaged within the company, since it is not held long enough for storage-related accidents to arise.

Also, having less inventory gives materials handlers more room to maneuver, so they are less likely to run into any inventory and cause damage.

•

Production mistakes can be spotted more quickly and corrected, which results in fewer products being produced that contain defects.

Again, these are just a few examples and tips on the waste of inventory. In my work with several operations in the LBM and Component industry, I have helped devise solutions to unique problems as well as the things you typically see in every operation. Mass timber, including cross-laminated timber (CLT), has been in use worldwide for over 15 years, but most notably in Europe.

However, North American designers and engineers are increasingly showing interest in picking up the trend.

Building with mass timber for taller buildings has increased in popularity for many reasons including: just-in-time fabrication and job site delivery, speed and efficiency in construction, reduced job site noise and on-site labor force, substitution of high embodied materials with a renewable resource that sequesters carbon, and creating a living or work space that has the aesthetics of exposed wood.

The recent introduction of CLT in the 2015 National Design Specification® for Wood Construction (NDS®) and the 2015 International Building Code has opened up an exciting new chapter in wood construction. The use of CLT alone, or in combination with other mass timber elements, such as glued laminated timber (GLT), nail laminated timber (NLT), or structural composite lumber (SCL), is becoming more common in buildings complying with the latest building code.

There is also an effort underway by the International Code Council (ICC) to recognize the use of mass timber elements in even taller construction through the work of the ICC Tall Wood Ad Hoc Committee.

Lumber Market Volatility About to Binge

Have you heard the news? Lumber prices are up? Feel like punching me in the throat, don’t you? Over the past several months, we have been looking at ways to save money in the lumber market. Saving money adds money to your bank account, which means that saving money is part of our business plan to make money. It’s all about how much is left over after all of the expenses are paid. After all, isn’t that why we play the game?

Perhaps the most overlooked aspect of saving money in your component business is the area where you have the most exposure and vulnerability. That is lumber price volatility. I just read a story about a builder who signed a contract for a custom home the week before the current rally began in early February. The job is scheduled to break ground in April. His dealer advised him last week that the lumber package would be 30% higher.

That completely wiped out the builder’s entire profit. Now he is saddled with six months of work that will make him nothing.

Had this builder been advised of the likelihood of such an event, he could have priced more defensively. Not only did the builder get screwed, so did the truss plant supplier. He didn’t buy to cover the job because the contractor didn’t cover. Now they are both in a nasty pickle. Last month’s euphoria has turned into next month’s nightmare.

This of all reminds me of a true life story that happened to me. Back the early 1980s, I agreed to provide my best customer, a NJ truss plant, with a fixed price on 2 carloads of SYP 2x4’s per month…January through September…nine months.

That year, lumber prices rose like this year, though a bit slower. At the worst point in that contract, I lost $70 per thousand…over $7000 per carload. When July rolled around, I was upside down $60,000. I was sick.

As you might expect, the market began to retreat and, over the last three months of the deal, I recovered the losses and came out a little ahead. That was a miserable year for me and my family.

The point is, lumber price swings can cause a lot of stress on a person and I feel your pain.

I created this occupation, lumber market forecasting, out of the desire to help others avoid lumber market catastrophes like the one I endured in the 1980s and the hundreds that are happening right now.

I sincerely hope you have fared well during these trying times, and, rest assured, this is not the end of it.

Impact of Sustained Elevated Temperature on Wood Unlike solid-sawn lumber, the mechanical properties of some materials are greatly affected by ambient temperatures and solar-radiation heating, as depicted by the photograph.

However, while the engineering design properties of solid-sawn lumber are not affected by ambient temperatures, they can be affected by some elevated and sustained temperatures when used in special applications. The purpose of this discussion is to review the temperature conditions that require special consideration and applicable adjustments to the published design values for lumber.

The National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS) is the building code referenced standard for wood construction in the US and it includes provisions for adjusting design stresses of lumber when used in different applications. A free view-only edition of NDS is available from the AWC website.

Review of the NDS table reveals the wood science of the issue, notably interesting is the fact that the in-service moisture content (MC) further reduces the tabulated design values in four of the six properties listed and used in structural designs.

The role of MC and temperature was made clear to me as a graduate student at Purdue University when I learned that timber columns in a “cooling tower” had collapsed. Being a cooling tower, the timber support columns were kept wet and hot, thus negatively impacting the design properties of a timber column.

Truss Applications Regarding attics, Table 2.3.3 (viewed alone) might suggest typical attics require a Ct adjustment on design stresses; however, this is not the case for a typical attic as explained by Section 2.3.3: 2.3.3. Temperature Factor, Ct Reference design values shall be multiplied by the temperature factors, Ct, in Table 2.3.3 for structural members that will experience sustained exposure to elevated temperatures up to 150ºF (see Appendix C).

The key word in Section 2.3.3 is “sustained.” As discussed in NDS Appendix C, wood has the ability to tolerate elevated temperatures up to 150°F on an intermittent basis. Specifically, from NDS Appendix C: Up to 150°F, the immediate effect is reversible.

The member will recover essentially all its strength when the temperature is reduced to normal.

Prolonged heating to temperatures above 150°F can cause a permanent loss of strength.

Possible Exceptions Requiring Ct Of course, some truss applications may not be typical with respect to temperature thus consideration by the design professionals is needed. One example might be the attic of a laundromat over a bank of clothes dryers. For this case, it may reasonable to assume that the heating is “sustained” above the adjustment threshold of 100°F in NDS Table 2.3.3.

The project Building Designer or General Contractor should have knowledge of the expected in-use environment of the trusses to be designed and installed. The truss applications that trigger the temperature factors, Ct less than 1.0 in NDS Table 2.3.3, are probably atypical; however, when the Ct factors are required, they are a substantial and a significant aspect of the truss design process.

How to Pick a Connector Series: Selecting a Joist Hanger

A quick glance through the Simpson Strong-Tie® Wood Construction Connectors catalog shows that we manufacture at least 29 different models of face-mount wood-to-wood joist hangers, three separate models of face-mount wood-tomasonry hangers, 42 different models of top-flange wood-to-wood joist hangers, four different models of top-flange wood-to-masonry hangers and 15 models of specialty joist hangers. And that’s not even counting heavy truss girder hangers or multiple-member hangers. So it’s no wonder that sometimes it’s difficult to pick exactly the right hanger for your particular application.

There are many things to consider when picking a joist hanger. The first may be what your load requirements are, including their direction. That will sometimes determine the second consideration. Do you want to use a top-flange or a face-mount joist hanger? Top-flange hangers typically have higher down loads with fewer fasteners, but must be installed when there is access to the top of the supporting member and often before the joist is in place. On the other hand, facemount hangers can be installed after the joist is in place, and can have higher uplift loads, but will use more fasteners.

Speaking of fasteners, any fastener preference can determine your selection of a hanger. Joist hangers can be installed with common nails, screws (SD for lighter hangers and SDS for heavier hangers), or even bolts, for heavy glulam hangers.

Another thing to consider at the beginning is what types and sizes of members are being connected together. Is your connection all solid-sawn dimension lumber, engineered wood or structural composite lumber, glulam beams, or trusses?

Furthermore, joist hangers will have different capacities based on the species of wood to which they are being attached.

For example, the truss hangers in the table below have allowable loads listed for Douglas Fir-Larch, Southern Pine, and Spruce-Pine-Fir/Hem Fir. Most standard solid-sawn joist hangers, on the other hand, will only have two load ratings, DF/SP and SPF.

Top-flange hangers are sensitive both to the species of wood and to the type of engineered wood to which they are attached. Because of that sensitivity, they have to be tested to each different type of engineered wood that could be used as a header and may have different published allowable loads for each type as shown here.

Is the joist framing into the side or top of a concrete/masonry wall? Then a special joist hanger is required. Is the joist connecting to a nailer on top of a steel beam or concrete/masonry wall? Nailers require top-flange hangers and can result in loss of allowable load if you have to use shorter nails, so you need to check that carefully. There are special tables published for nailer loads for top-flange hangers.

Another consideration is the orientation of the members. In a perfect world, all connections will be between perfectly perpendicular members. But in the real world, joists may be rotated side to side (skewed), or up or down (sloped), or some combination of the two. There are a couple of options in those cases. Hangers such as the SUR/SUL series are available pre-skewed at 45 degrees. Adjustable hangers such as the LSU/LSSU series can be adjusted within limits to certain slopes, skews and slope/skew combinations. reductions required, are listed in the Hanger Options section of the catalog or website. The table there gives the various options available for each product and clicking on an individual hanger in the website table will send you to a page with the specific reductions for each option.

Another important consideration is the installed cost of the joist hanger. Simpson Strong-Tie publishes what we call an Installed Cost Index, where the total installed cost of a hanger, including fasteners and labor, can be compared for related hangers. For example, there are six joist hangers listed in the Solid Sawn section for a 2Ă—6 joist. They are listed in order of increasing Installed Cost Index. To choose one, simply find the one with the lowest installed cost that meets your load requirements.

Obviously, this is a lot to think about when trying to choose a simple joist hanger. In order to make choosing a connector as easy as possible for our customers, Simpson Strong-Tie offers two different software tools to help. The first is our old standby, the downloadable Connector Selector. This is a versatile program that will help the user pick a joist hanger, truss hanger, multi-truss hanger, column base, column cap, holdown, mudsill anchor, hurricane tie, multi-ply lumber fastener, embedded anchor bolt, or hinge connector. It can be downloaded from easily. You can see from this example that the Connector Selector gives several options for nailing of joist hangers that may not be directly listed in the catalog.

A final consideration in choosing a joist hanger is the finish desired. New “Easy Siding & Trim Attachment” Video from APA Video describes how plywood and OSB sheathing can be used as a code-compliant base for siding and trim A new video that explains how OSB and plywood sheathing can be used as a sturdy, code-compliant nail base for siding and trim is available from APA – The Engineered Wood Association. In Easy Siding & Trim Attachment, APA’s Engineered Wood Specialist Mary Uher talks to Jon Sukonik, a builder who has taken advantage of the capabilities of continuously sheathed walls for 16-inch on-center siding attachment with 24-inch on-center advanced framing. The 4:36 minute video was filmed at one of Sukonik’s jobsites in Pennsylvania.

“By making a simple switch to continuous wood structural panel sheathing and ring-shank nails, this builder was able to satisfy both the requirements for withdrawal pressures as mandated by code and the fastening requirements of the siding manufacturer,” Uher explained.

Continuous sheathing—sheathing all exterior walls with wood structural panels, including above and below openings and gable ends— is a practical and effective way to meet the code at an affordable cost.

Advantages to using continuously plywood or OSB wall sheathing as a nail base for siding and trim include: • Ensures that all siding ends and trim are fastened to a solid substrate.

• Eliminates the need to install additional wall studs, saving expense on time and materials.

• Allows for the use of popular siding products when studs are spaced 24 inches on center.

• Eliminates the need to locate hidden studs, which is especially tricky when house wrap or continuous insulation covers the walls.

• Reduces wind-related siding noise complaints and call-backs.

• Helps ensure that siding remains in place during high wind events.

• Maintains structural integrity of the building if the siding is penetrated during a high-wind event.

The environmental benefits of North American wood products are presented in a new guide from APA – The Engineered Wood Association. Sustainable Buildings, Sustainable Future, Form F305, contains facts and figures related to the sustainability of the forest resource, forest certification, life cycle assessment, and Environmental Product Declarations. The guide also compares energy consumption in the manufacture of wood, steel and concrete products, and provides a comparison of the net carbon impact of the building materials.

Sustainable Buildings, Sustainable Future also includes an in-depth look at how sustained demand for wood products fosters a cycle of growth in North American forests. As a result of forest management and extensive replanting, timber volume has steadily increased during the past 50 years. There are more trees in the U.S. today than there were in the early 1900s, according a National Report on Sustainable Forests, published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
