It was a busy openings and closures period for dealers across the country over the past few weeks, including a number of moves involving ProSales 100 dealers. Stock Building Supply, ProBuild, Carter Lumber, and Meek’s all either closed or announced the closure of at least one location. Parr Lumber added an opening.

Stock, No. 7 on the ProSales 100, will close its North Little Rock, Conway, and Fort Smith, Ark., lumberyards on Dec. 16. Those locations were originally part of National Home Centers, which Stock acquired in 2010. The Raleigh, N.C.-based dealer will continue to operate its lumber facility in Springdale, Ark., and its flooring design center in Conway. The three new closures means Stock has now closed four former National Home Center locations.

No. 2-ranked ProBuild said it plans to close its Smyrna, Tenn., location and remove its lumber, millwork, and component manufacturing operations from the Nashville, Tenn., market on Dec. 16. All it will leave behind is a Gypsum yard in Spring Hill, Tenn. The moves come just over two years since ProBuild announced the opening of the component facility and the doubling of the size of its Smyrna operation.

Carter Lumber, No. 11 on the listing, announced the closure of its location in Centerville, Ind., on Dec. 5.

Branding or Selling?

The difference between the Advertiser and most trade publications is lead time. The average monthly publication takes too long for advertisers to get into specifics that can change by the time the reader picks up the newest issue, hot off the press, so most advertisers chose to “Sell the Brand”.

Publication lead times may vary but the “freshness” problem persists. The goal with Branding is to make sure that the company name and product lines stay “fresh” in the reader’s minds and be visible when the reader finally decides to act.

It wasn’t all bad news, however, as a few companies managed to expand and open new locations. Parr Lumber, another ProSales 100 member, based in Hillsboro, Ore., will open a new location in Marysville, Wash., on Dec. 14.

Hughes Lumber, a Catoosa, Okla.-based dealer, will host the grand 2004 Monet DeSauw "Desawyer opening of its new Fairland, Okla., location on Dec. 9. The opening is a 2000" Five Blade Automated relocation within Fairland.

Component Saw ProSales was also informed of a number of other closures in Northern California that occurred in 2008 and 2009. Those closures included Gabbert Edwards, a wholesale lumber distributor in Sacramento; Piedmont Lumber, with locations in Tracy and Ukiah; ProBuild in Sacramento; and Longfellow Lumber in Chico.

To explain the mathematics of rotating an object on the computer screen, we must resort to a little trigonometry. Suppose you want to rotate point (4,1) 40o around the origin to a new location (x’, y’):

How does the computer calculate the new point (x’, y’)? (Rotations are always performed in a counterclockwise direction; to rotate in a clockwise direction, you simply reverse the sign of the angle.) Let’s answer the question in general for any point (x,y) and any angle q. Then we’ll plug in the actual numbers and see how well the calculated value of (x’, y’) agrees with expectations. To derive the necessary equations, we need to draw two more lines perpendicular to each axis, plus one more angle r:

[If point (x,y) is (4,1), then h = 4.1321, but its actual value will turn out to be immaterial.] From elementary trigonometry we have: • x = h cos r • y = h sin r • x’ = h cos(r + q) • y’ = h sin(r + q) Also from trigonometry you may recall that for any two angles r and q: • sin(r + q) = sin r cos q + cos r sin q • cos(r + q) = cos r cos q - sin r sin q Combining these equations, we can solve for x’ and y’ in terms of x and y: • x’ = h cos(r + q) = h [(x/h) cos q - (y/h) sin q] = x cos q - y sin q • y’ = h sin(r + q) = h [(y/h) cos q + (x/h) sin q] = x sin q + y sin q [Do you see why the value of h doesn’t matter? Every so often something nice happens in algebra.] These are the formulas we need to calculate (x’, y’). If q = 40o, then sin q = 0.64279 and cos q = 0.76604; so: • x’ = (4)(0.76604) – (1)(0.64279) = 2.42138 y’ = (4)(0.64279) + (1)(0.76604) = 3.33719 • Referring back to the original graph, you can verify that (2.42, 3.34) is the approximate location of point (x’, y’). Of course, the computer must still convert this point into screen coordinates (using the equations from Blog #6) to identify the pixel location on the screen.

It must then perform identical calculations for every other point in your model, so that the entire image appears to have been rotated 40o around the origin.

We’ll conclude with two important observations: (1) So far, we have assumed that the center of rotation is always the origin. To rotate around any other point (say, the midpoint of a line segment), we need two more steps. (2) Rotating a point does not by itself create the illusion of an object spinning on the screen. To achieve this effect, you have to display the object in small successive angular increments, like a sequence of motion picture frames.

A possible choice of q is 1o. At each increment the previously-calculated coordinate (x’, y’) becomes the new point (x,y) to be rotated, summarized in the following steps: x’ = x cos 1o – y sin 1o • y’ = x sin 1o + y cos 1o • Redraw point (x’,y’) • • x = x’ y = y’ • Repeat from the top • Dave Corbin

Madison’s is a North American lumber and panel commodity price guide and market analysis newsletter, which has been published every Friday out of Vancouver, BC since 1952. As expected the business of lumber slowed down significantly last week, although there was enough lumber trading activity to keep commodity prices firm, generally speaking. Sawmills are still running down order files built around the US Thanksgiving long weekend, and are now preparing for seasonal shutdowns.

In Quebec, lumber producers will close for a full three weeks around Christmas and New Year’s, particularly in remote areas. In BC, mills will shut for two weeks. In the west an entire week of closures is normal, this year it will be longer due to log supply issues. The weather has created prohibitive conditions in the woodlands, and heavy equipment simply will not be able to access forests until the ground freezes up, usually in later January. American mills also close for several days or a week depending on the region, however this year the decreased demand and potentially softening prices will prompt more than a few US lumber producers to take longer downtime.

The log supply situation, long-discussed by Madison’s, will truly become a problem next year, likely quite early on.

Ultra-conservative business practices in the forest industry have proven correct for the past two years as the long-stalled US housing market simply refused to come back up off bottom. At this time mills feel justified in continuing to restrict investment in logging. However, the past two years are over and it is time to look toward next spring. Almost no one in the North American lumber industry is doing that, with their negative feelings about the short term future being ever more confirmed by dire economic realities.

The lag of time between when lumber demand starts to trickle back next year, however slowly, and mills are able to build a sufficient log supply will be much longer than most anticipate. During that lag, sawmill order files will stretch out as lumber producers scramble to source enough fibre to run through their mills, which in turn will cause the price of lumber to rise. Volumes, however, will be low precisely due to the amount of time it will take to fill orders.

A maddening situation to be sure: just when demand for lumber begins to recover, sawmills will find themselves poorly positioned to respond in a timely manner. Larger producers with dedicated loggers and with equipment waiting in warm storage will be the quickest to respond. Smaller operations and those relying on logging contractors will have a difficult time finding people, and equipment, to send back out into the bush.
