I’m sure many of you can repeat my words, and that’s just fine because we will do whatever we need to in order to survive and set the example for others to follow. If you’re walking your operation with one of your associates, be the first one to pick up that empty soda can, or that weed sticking up in-between the concrete. If you get to the next empty soda can and the person you’re walking with doesn’t grab it before you do, then maybe that person should be walking home.

Here at Kimal Lumber & Hardware, we take great pride in the cleanliness of our operations; a high standard was set many years ago by our President, Mr. Al Bavry. Many times I have heard the vendor reps (who travel around the state) tell me Kimal has the cleanest, most organized yards they have ever seen.

Getting your yard in order isn’t that hard, but maintaining it can be more difficult if the discipline isn’t instilled in your associates. Yet a clean, well-organized yard speaks volumes to the customer. For example, if you were car shopping and the dealer had unwashed cars and overflowing garbage cans lying around—that may tell you something about that dealer. If you pulled into another dealer’s lot with clean vehicles, maintained grounds, and a spotless showroom that gives off a much better, professional vibe, who would you be more inclined to buy from?

The celebrations among North America’s solid wood sellers continued last week, as shocked customers were once again faced with strong prices. Dimension lumber stayed flat or eased off slightly, particularly in the west. It was once again panel products that were the hottest items, with prices improving further on previous weeks’ gains.

Order files at dimension lumber mills were at four weeks, while plywood and OSB producers -- especially in the east -- continued to report a sold six week order file. Eastern plywood producers crowed about order files out to the first week of August. It is not reasonable to expect panel prices to remain flat, let alone soften, any time this season. And possibly far beyond it.

Benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 #2&Btr prices held firm at US$308 mfbm last week. This is a $78, or 25 per cent, improvement over mid-June 2011.

In panel, benchmark OSB 7/16” Ontario rested for another week at C$260 msf, a $20, or almost 8 per cent, increase over one month ago and a $60, or 23 per cent, rise over this time last year. Its plywood partner however, Canadian Softwood Plywood 3/8” was the star of the week, rising another $9 from the week before to C$410 msf. This plywood commodity as climbed $57, or 14 per cent, since last month, and a whopping $115, or 28 per cent, compared to mid-June last year.

Studs prices across species, sizes, and grades, remain at highs reached in May following the catastrophic loss of the Sinclar Group’s Lakeland stud mill in Prince George, BC. Hesitant customers tried, and failed, to bring prices down by delaying buying but only got caught having to pick up absolute necessity wood at higher prices in the following days. Mills are receiving rounds of calls asking for quotes; anyone who doesn’t jump in and buy is forced to call back later. But by then mills are quoting higher than the previously-unacceptable highs. Caught with no inventory, customers are forced to accept the increases. Counter-offers are being laughed off with impunity.

The banks of the mighty Fraser River have swelled to levels not seen since 1972. A combination of late snow melt and heavy rains has brought flood warnings to several regions of the BC interior, where many saw milling and logging operations take place. The Fraser is expected to crest at the end of this week.
