Georgia-Pacific Wood Products (GP) announced a new strategic direction for its engineered lumber business today designed to facilitate more direct involvement with its customers. The initiative coincides with the expiration of GP's distribution agreement with BlueLinx, which is set to occur on Feb. 12, and will allow for GP to begin to phase out its Broadspan line of engineered wood products.

"This new strategy will help expand market opportunities for GP, our customers, distributors, and supply partners," Mark Luetters, president of Georgia-Pacific Wood Products, said in a news release. "We feel this will help us better meet customer needs through a strong network of independent distributors with a primary focus on engineered lumber products."

As part of its strategy, GP will provide inside and outside account management personnel, business development support, engineering and technical services, and software development and support to all its engineered lumber customers. The company will continue to supply its complete line of engineered lumber products. Jeff Key, GP's senior manager for marketing communications, said these services will be offered on an "as needed" basis to dealers, since some already provide them. GP said it is currently in the process of negotiating with distributors to sell and move its products after the end of its contract with BlueLinx.

Paul Watterson, general manager of Georgia-Pacific Wood Products, said the initiative will allow the company to offer brands such as Wood I Beam joists, GP Lam LVL, GP Lam 3000 Glulam, and Fiberstrong rim board to a broader set of customers.

On Nov. 4, BlueLinx revealed plans to launch its own line of privately branded engineered wood products, which the company said will replace the GP products following the distribution agreement expiration. The company also announced that same day that its net loss for the third quarter deepened to $14.9 million from $13.5 million in the year-earlier period even though sales rose 3.4% to $464.7 million.

BlueLinx traces its history back to the former distribution division of Georgia-Pacific Wood Products that began operating in 1954 and remained a part of the company until 2004. That year, it was bought by Cerberus Capital Management and a team of senior division leaders and renamed as BlueLinx.

"We're looking forward to working more closely with our customers and will remain committed to offering high-quality wood products and innovative solutions to the industry," said Watterson.

When you want to change the properties of an object on a computer, you must first select it by moving the cursor to a point near the object and clicking. The computer responds by highlighting the selected object, but what really goes on behind the scenes? Wherever you click, the computer registers the pixel location (mx,my) – or screen coordinates – of the cursor. It then converts this location to the corresponding world coordinates [x,y], reversing the equations presented in the previous blog:

Then from Blog #4 we can convert the two lines into vectors A(u1– u0, v1 – v0) and B(x – u, y – v). The final piece of the puzzle comes from the fact that the dot product (see Blog #5) of two perpendicular vectors is always zero: A * B = (u1 – u0)(x – u) + (v1 – v0)(y – v) = 0 Combining these three equations and solving for s produces:

It performs these calculations almost instantaneously for every line on the screen, keeping track of the one that is closest to (x,y).

This circumstance can be used to disqualify a segment if the perpendicular projection from (x,y) falls beyond its endpoints – e.g. from (x’,y’) or (x”,y”) in the above example.

To gain a better understanding of these calculations, try using a pocket calculator to compute the values of s, u, v and distance from the point (4,2) to a line segment from (2,2) to (5,4). [The answers are s = 0.4615, u = 3.3846 and v = 2.9231; so the distance from (4,2) to the line is 1.1094.] Then imagine having to perform this calculation on 100 candidate line segments; you can see why a computer is a virtual necessity.

In summary, you have now seen two vector products that are particularly useful to software engineers: A * B = 0 => Vectors are perpendicular A x B = 0 => Vectors are parallel You may also begin to appreciate how mathematical concepts build upon each other and weave themselves into the fabric of computer graphics. As a former professor once declared, “Your algebra will never fail you” (double meaning notwithstanding).

SFPA’s primary function is to market lumber products and to help users understand Southern Pine grading rules and design values developed by the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) and approved by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) Board of Review.

The North American lumber industry is in the midst of its normal annual slowing, which really comes into effect after the US Thanksgiving long weekend.

Currently, lumber producers and customers are maintaining a delicate supplydemand balance as both parties always want to end the year with no inventory on hand. As the weather turns ugly across the continent and home building and renovation activity grinds to a halt at this time of year, more sawmill curtailments and indefinite closures will be announced. Manufacturing discipline on the part of producers is the only way to keep the price of lumber from sliding below cost of production, as it has at times in the past few years.

Customers in Asia maintain a steady demand for wood products, but so far this November no monster-sized jumps in volumes going to China have been seen.

The British Columbia Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation has released September export figures for that province, with significant increases being reported in wood products going both to China and the US. What the carefully crafted government statements don’t say, however, is that these volumes are coming off annual lows for July and August. It was actually July that saw the highest exports of lumber, both in volume and value. The September figures, while an improvement over the previous two months, are still quite a bit lower than in July.

Future numbers coming for October and November will reveal a pull back in demand overseas. Sources at the sawmills and wholesalers told Madison’s Lumber Reporter that demand around Labour Day spiked significantly, enough to drive the price of lumber up and to push mill order files out to the end of September. Those order files shrank back down to just a few days as soon as that surge of demand was satisfied. Since then it has been difficult for producers to keep lumber prices from softening even further, which will prompt more curtailments before the end of this year.

Meanwhile, the Japan Research Institute of Construction and Economy has released its home building projections. For fiscal-year 2011, ending in March 2012, Japan will count over 900,000 new units in total, the highest in four years.

Total starts for 2012 are also projected to exceed 900,000 units. With a wellestablished wood building culture and focus on higher value, high grade, lumber products, Japan is poised to retake its position as North America’s second largest destination for softwood lumber exports.

grades of lumber. These decisions will have no impact on the design values of Machine Stress Rated (MSR) lumber and Machine Evaluated Lumber (MEL) because of the way these products are manufactured and tested.
