Following a season of heavy storms in areas of the Midwest and the rollout of manufacturer price increases nationwide, many dealers reported current or anticipated difficulties in securing product in quantities large enough, and in the required time frame, to meet customer demand.

Joe Corah, commodities division manager at Do it Best Corp., said that many member locations placed heavy orders in the fourth quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012 fearing that a replay of last summer’s allocation periods would leave them with insufficient inventories to meet another round of storm-centric demand. This year’s story adds another dimension with the industry-wide announcement that shingle prices would rise during the first quarter to keep up with increases in raw material costs, along with a general uptick in residential remodeling that Corah says is seeing more consumers replace their roofs.

Our vendors also bought really heavy.” Mike Schwarz, marketing director for ABC Supply, No. 1 on the 2012 ProSales 100, accredited the higher demand to slightly warmer weather, adding that the company didn’t adjust its winter buying habits in anticipation of spring and summer allocations. He said that some ABC Supply locations experienced extended ship times, but to no great extent. Yet Wuerdeman and other dealers who say they’ve yet to be affected by the side effects of the excessive demand aren’t entirely optimistic for the near-term. A roofing dealer in Omaha, Neb., who bought heavier in 4Q 2011, says that the uptick in demand following local storms could lead to another period of allocations. Manufacturers “can only produce so much,” he says. “If demand is there for it, they’re in the driver’s seat.” According to Corah, this is already contributing to delayed and staggered ship times for new orders as manufacturers work to keep pace with demand in part by pulling extra product from non-affected regions. “It’s not like all the orders are getting shipped in four to six weeks,” he says. “Some of them are five to eight weeks.” Meantime, he reports that some of his members are looking outside their area for manufacturers and distributors who have product on hand, even if it means paying a premium. The party with North American lumber producers continued last week, albeit with a wee slowdown by Friday due to the mass exodus of US staff in advance of the Memorial Day long weekend. Prices on almost all commodities stayed firm or rose slightly, causing conniptions to buyers who had been holding off restocking in hopes that prices would soften. Traders reported that customers called back repeatedly for endless rounds of small, fill-in orders. With secondary sources still refusing to stock wood and prices maintaining their current highs, one has to wonder what the business plan is for later in this US home building season. Again the wider sizes -- used most in multi-family building -- ruled the market, with WSPF 2x8’s popping up another $10 to end the week at US$310 mfbm. This item is now at a $60 premium over this time last year, and a $34 increase over one month ago. With no signs of slowing. One the west coast, green Douglas fir mills once more could not catch a break, with prices on that species softening after a brief rally. OSB in the central zone maintained its $20 increase of the previous week to close last week again at C$240 msf.

Fresh forest fires were sparked in northern Ontario and parts of the US. It appears a long, hot summer is looming. Concerns of fibre restrictions are becoming increasingly more real. Even in areas not suffering from wildfires there are likely to be bans in effect until it is safe to operate heavy equipment in the back country. Many mills have already invested in logging and are in fact right now waiting for access to the forest to pull the last of their logs from roadside to the sawmill. Whether this stockpile will be enough to last until probably September, when temperatures being cooling, remains to be seen. In the east of Canada several mills had to close or curtail due to a glut of wood chips. The pulp and paper sector in North America has been hit badly by the dual occurrences of a lagging US economy and aggressive pulp producers in the southern hemisphere. Demand for softwood chips regionally has dropped, and eastern spruce sawmills have had to halt production until they can find a home for their residuals. Wood chips can be a fire hazard of their own. One New Brunswick facility has reported a pile of wood chips two storeys high. This inconvenience, not to mention potential danger, must be resolved before operations resume.
