(Nasdaq: UFPI) today announced that a subsidiary of the Company has purchased certain assets of Haleyville, Ala.-based MSR Forest Products, LLC, a supplier of roof trusses and cut-to-size lumber to the region’s manufactured housing producers. The purchase was completed on May 16, 2012. The move allows Universal to enhance its capacity utilization and reduce costs as the Company merges its existing Haleyville, Ala., operations with the operations of MSR. In addition to its Alabama facility, MSR has a plant in Waycross, Ga., which also is a part of the transaction. In 2011, MSR had annual sales of $10 million. “MSR has been a strong company that has grown its success with great determination and skill,” said Matthew J. Missad, CEO of Universal Forest Products, Inc. “However, with shrinking volume in the manufactured housing arena, it was difficult to maintain efficiencies and create profitable business. This move will benefit both companies. North American solid wood prices last week continued their inexorable climb of late. The shock of a sudden decrease in stud production after the loss of the Lakeland stud mill to a catastrophic explosion at the end of April has worked its way through the lumber market. The reality of very low inventories throughout the supply chain is finally impossible to deny. Even last week customers had to call around to several sources to find the exact product mix they were looking for, causing emboldened producers to push prices up even higher. It was demand out of the US, particularly for multi-family building, that was driving the price increases. Again it was wides, particularly 2x10’s, that had the sharpest increases.

Benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 R/L prices rose $4 to US$304 mfbm, an $86 -- or 28 per cent -- increase over the same time last year. 2x10’s, meanwhile, popped up $24 to US$354, a $94 -- or 27 per cent -- gain over last year. The approaching close of the current futures contract, on May 15, forced futures prices to rise. Futures had been lingering below cash price levels for most of the May contract, so picked up value through last week to correct for the price discount. By the May 15 close, futures matched cash exactly at US$304 mfbm. Demand for studs continued fierce, in all species and regions. WSPF KD 2x6 PET studs prices jumped $20 to end the week at US$345, a $95 -- or 28 per cent -- improvement over one year ago. The run on studs resulted in price increases in the east as well. ESPF KD 2x4 8’ studs rose $10 compared to the previous week, to US$410 mfbm. This is a $105 -- or 26 per cent -- hike over the same time last year. Transportation provided little problems last week, apart from the usual grumbling about the monopoly railroad companies in Canada and their practice of taking long-mouldering rail cars out of storage and sending them to the mills unchecked. Only after these cars are loaded and sent on their way are maintenance issues discovered. Already running under tight schedules and growing order files, staff at sawmills could only grind their teeth as the wood was unloaded, the cars greased up, tightened up, cleaned up, then reloaded to finally get on their way. With no other railroads serving many remote Canadian communities, there is little these sawmills can do about this seemingly relentless situation.
