Builders FirstSource’s first quarter loss from continuing operations improved by $2 million from the same period a year ago to reach $19.2 million for the period ended March 31, the company announced today.

Sales jumped 35% to $219.4 million at the Dallas, Texas-based building material supplier and component manufacturer. Cost of sales also grew 33% to $174.2 million, which led to gross margins of 21%, up from the 19% revealed a year ago.

“Our sales growth continues to outpace construction activity as actual U.S. single-family housing starts were up only 16.8% compared to the same quarter last year and U.S. single-family units under construction actually decreased 5% over the same period,” said Floyd Sherman, CEO of Builders FirstSource. He said these were the company’s highest first-quarter sales since 2008.

The first full week back to work for North American lumber traders following the Easter long weekend and spring breaks of various lengths provided little in terms of solid wood price movement. Changes of $0 or $5 increments were posted across commodities, except green Douglas fir 2x10’s which tanked by $30, and central oriented strand board.

However, Madison’s feels confident in forecasting significant price hikes the following week, due to the difficulty in getting lumber buyers and sellers on the phone during our weekly survey on Thursday. In a sector known for alternating between wild swings of prices, whether up or down, and periods of stultifyingly boring flat prices, there are a few things which are consistent indicators.

One of these is lumber traders telling Madison’s, “I can’t talk now call back later.” When this statement is uttered several times consecutively throughout a single day, one can bet that prices are about to move. That they didn’t last week only further indicates price changes this week.

After waffling up and down by $15 increments in the past few weeks, benchmark panel commodity OSB 7/16” Ontario popped up $10 to end last week at C$215 msf. That’s a $20 improvement over price levels at this time last year. Still on panel, Canadian softwood plywood 9.5mm in Toronto, which is also traded at significant volumes, rose $10 in price as well, to finish the week at C$350 msf, a $45 increase over the same time last year.

Something important to note, especially in view of the next two years’ of new home building being dominated by multi-family units, Western SprucePine-Fir KD 2x6 PET studs jumped by $65 a couple of weeks ago and last week generally managed to maintain those price levels. WSPF KD 2x6 PET studs, used predominantly in multi-family building, landed at US$300 mfbm last week, a $20 improvement over this time last year.

Anyone looking at lumber price fluctuations and seasonality in 2011 for indication of what will happen this year would do well to rethink that strategy.

Circumstances in 2012 are more dissimilar to last year than they are the same.

It is quite safe to say that two months from now people will hardly recognize prices for North American lumber and panel products.
