Last week the National Home Builders Association (NHBA) hosted its annual International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Orlando, Florida. IBS is the largest light construction show with over 47,000 building industry attendees and over 800 exhibitors. Although the home building industry is still crawling back to its former self, IBS has held steady with attendees and exhibitors over the last several years. In 2012, the attendance numbers were almost identical to 2011, but last year consumers were window-shopping and non-committal. This year, many industry experts and exhibitors noticed one major difference – People Are Buying!

So why are tradeshows consistently well attended, and in a recovering but still weak economy, how do exhibitors justify the large expense of attending tradeshows?

Tradeshows are historically a traditional marketing practice dating back to the first New York World’s Fair in 1853 (photo credit: Otis Elevator Co. Historic Archives).

Today, with customers at our fingertips on the web, why do consumers and exhibitors still flock to tradeshows? Is it the attraction of being able to touch and feel products at shows like IBS or the opportunity to meet face to face with customers and size up the competition? What if large companies begin to pull out of tradeshow exhibition, would tradeshows cease to exist?

Back in 1988, I attended my first tradeshow as a press correspondent – The Detroit Auto Show. This show has historically been one of the largest and most well attended shows in America for many years. Although the Auto Show has seen dramatic declines in attendance over the last several years, exhibitors and the show itself have responded to the need to reinvent themselves to attract attendees. Traditional booths with product displays, brochures and a nice movie are not good enough anymore. Companies like Toyota have found a new way to attract a different audience and to interact hands-on with consumers. Their popular, interactive vision wall allows customers to personalize their “dream car” while learning about the benefits offered by Toyota's vehicles.

Exhibit booths at home builder shows, such as IBS have come a long way from their bikiniclad displays, and exhibitors are finding fun ways to attract consumers, such as fresh baked cookies and games of chance to win prizes, but the industry as a whole has a long way to go to catch up with interactive technology. Which shows are on your marketing budget this year? Are there any must-see exhibits or did we already see the best of the light construction industry at IBS 2012?

While not usually a leading indicator, Madison’s is taking the sharp movement upward in all panel prices last week as a sign that the lumber industry turnaround is upon us. Should that prediction bear out with further increases in solid wood prices this week, all players must understand that the downturn is indeed over.

OSB 7/16” in the Ontario region, and its slightly less-consumed cousin, softwood Plywood in Toronto both surged $11, to C$205 and C$329 msf respectively. Both commodities have recovered from recent price lows. Traders indicated last week that demand had absolutely gathered momentum, in fact they were so busy they hardly took the time to provide market information. A reminder of the heady days of 2005/06!

Continued resurgence in demand from China post the Chinese New Year break drove up utility grade dimension lumber prices across all species. In fact, the volume of Asian buying was enough to cause price hikes on standard grade products as well.

Producers indicated that the supply/demand balance has finally been achieved, particularly in the most hard-hit species like Douglas fir. Customers have come to realize that the practice of just-in-tme buying of the past four years is no longer a good idea. With even a small increase in demand, sawmills find their order files are pushed out to three weeks or longer. All participants are anxiously waiting to see what will happen when spring arrives in earnest; inventories throughout the supply chain are so depleted that all shipments of wood come directly from producers. The standard habit for well over a year now.

During that time, however, demand was so low that mills could fill all orders with ease, even when curtailed to 70 per cent capacity.

What is new, is that now capacity remains at that level but demand is increasing. Regardless, inventories remain at zero because no one trusts their judgement in this fragile market therefore there is no replenishment.

The old looming concern over replacement costs is trumping new indications of a recovering market. By the time players figure out that they need much more wood on hand, it will be April and sawmills will be enjoying a six week

order file. Lumber prices, of course, will respond significantly upward.

Potentially by the order of another $100 mfbm.

Heady days, indeed.
