A unit of the private equity firm Blue Wolf Capital Partners LLC acquired ABS in March 2011. Blue Wolf's news release announcing the CBS deal describes ABS as the largest independent supplier of doors, windows and trusses to homebuilders in Florida, but did not provide figures backing up that claim. It is based in Sanford, Fla., near Orlando, with manufacturing and distribution facilities in Winter Haven, Melbourne, and Jacksonville.

Despite a lull in orders last week, dimension lumber commodity prices rose slightly. Momentum from the demand of previous weeks, and continued good weather, helped keep lumber prices up.

Benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 #2&Btr prices firmed up another $5 last week, to US$267 mmfbm.

In general, North American solid wood prices across species and grades continue their uptick from mid-January. Should this good weather indeed hold until spring, increased home builder confidence will translate into more ordering of wood products. Most veteran lumber traders, however, expect some kind of cold snap between now and spring as there has not been an occurrence of sustained mild temperatures for an entire winter in recent memory. The US weather service is predicting another severe storm season if these warm temperatures do continue.

On the west coast, Douglas fir mills seem to finally be getting a handle on production in their region. Enough capacity has disappeared either through bankruptcy or permanent closure that the supply/demand balance has been achieved. While fir lumber prices remain soft, barely matching cost of production, they are at least moving in the right direction and show no signs of falling yet again. A drop in fir log buying by offshore customers, specifically from China, has resulted in less expensive fibre costs on the west coast, giving fir mills an additional break.

On the east side of Canada, the practice of sending raw ESPF logs straight into the chipper then to the pulp mill of a couple of weeks ago has thankfully abated. As a short term solution to a drop in buying, log chipping is a good idea because it prevents overproduction of lumber and a drop in prices. This strategy has backfired more than once, however, particularly when pulp prices are strong -- which right now they are not.

By last week mills in Quebec were back to running lumber from their existing log supplies rather than simply selling the chips.

A final note on the weather; a source in northern Canada -- at the government of Northwest Territories -- notified Madison’s that if these mild temperatures continue the regular seasonal road ban will go into effect much earlier than usual. If constricted log supplies coincide with resurgence in lumber demand this spring, lumber mills in BC, Quebec and the US west coast will suffer a drop in fibre supply. Buyers will then naturally be faced with steadily rising lumber prices.

Single/Multi-Family Engineered Component Sales. Responsible for a sales region which covers the Southeastern areas of North Carolina and the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina. I service singlefamily, multi-family, and commercial contractors. I also work with local building supply companies in order to provide them a link to component sales. I am responsible for making contact and then building and maintaining relationships with these contractors and building supply companies.

I am responsible for the estimating and preliminary design of all projects I come in contact with, utilizing the design software.
