ProBuild continues to challenge 84 Lumber on its home turf with the announcement that it is opening a location in Altoona, Pa., marking the company’s third location in 84’s breadbasket.

Denver-based ProBuild, ranked No. 2 on the latest ProSales 100 listing, opened locations in White Oak, Pa., which is right outside of Pittsburgh, and Morgantown, W.Va., about six months ago. 84 Lumber, No. 5 on the ProSales 100, is located in Eighty-Four, Pa., and already operates a yard in Altoona as well as two others nearby.

ProBuild’s CEO at that time of the two openings, Bill Myrick, spent 25 years at 84 Lumber before moving to the top spot at ProBuild in 2007. Myrick left ProBuild in July and the company has since named Robert Marchbank as his permanent successor.

The company will hold a grand opening for the Altoona location on Jan. 20 from 12-4 p.m.

Did Automated Builder Get it Right?

I was a fan of Don Carlson and Automated Builder from the early 80’s. As a reader and advertiser, I watched as the Automated Builder was labeled as just for “Mobile Home” readers, and was saddened by their departure from the industry.

Automated Builder served multiple industry segments for decades. While some said Modular and Building Components were not remotely related, others like Don thought that they were not far apart and could benefit each other. Suppliers slowly left Automated Builder to target one industry or the other, not realizing that the commonality was internal, not external. It is not competition for the same markets, but similarities in manufacturing systems and suppliers. I didn’t have a problem flipping past pages that were not useful, but always found something that interested me. For whatever reason, I think both sides lost when Don and company left.

With still a week remaining in Chinese New Year celebrations, no one expected an uptick in trading activity of North American lumber and panel products last week. It just goes to show: traditional market cycles that went out the window in the run-up to the US home building bonanza of 2005 and 2006, and during the subsequent crash, do not seem to be returning any time soon.

Making projections of lumber demand, and predicting lumber price trends, will only become increasingly difficult in this brave new world.

It was US and Canadian buyers, plus healthy interest from Japan, that propped up most commodity lumber prices last week. After a wee dip the previous week, benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 #2&Btr jumped an unexpected $10, to end the week at US$255 mfbm.

Those attempting to use lumber futures as a gauge of lumber prices in the cash market in the next couple of months may by now be feeling a bit of motion sickness. Or whiplash, from watching futures plunge almost $9 one day in the March contract then going up-limit across all contracts the very next day. In this mid-week, futures had settled at US$265 for the current contract, with over 4,000 trades booked so far. At a $10 premium on cash, it is anyone’s guess if this week’s print will follow the upward path set by futures in mid-week, or if cash prices will prevail and futures will adjust downward before the end of the week.

Of course, there is always the possibility that the disconnect between futures and cash will continue. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange rules state only that futures prices must come within a dollar or two of cash as each three-month contract closes for all commodities. Any wackiness in the meantime occurs a the peril of speculators.

Two major Canadian sawmill fires the previous week, one in BC and one in Ontario, had little effect on lumber prices last week. With a one to two-year time frame set for rebuilding of Hampton’s Babine Forest Products mill and EACOM’s McChesney mill, this loss of capacity may have an impact on lumber prices as this year winds on.

Across North America sawmills are running at about 70 per cent capacity so there is a lot of production waiting to come back online at other operations before anyone needs to think seriously about those burned-out mills.

Lumber producers hoped last week that a return of their Chinese customers this week will continue this unseasonal trend of rising lumber prices. Normally this time of year is the lull before spring buying begins in earnest. Given the past six years’ divergence from what used to be “normal”, no one knows for sure what this years’ spring buy will look like.

Noise - Hear Today Gone Tomorrow

Most workers take good hearing for granted. Hearing loss can happen so gradually that it can go unnoticed until it’s too late. Then, even a hearing aid may not help. Some assume hearing loss is the unavoidable result of getting older, yet most hearing loss is due to noise over a lifetime. While loss of hearing may result from a single exposure to a noise or explosion, such traumatic losses are rare. Most cases of hearing loss begin gradually in frequencies slightly above that of human speech and then subtly spread to lower and higher frequencies. Hearing loss can disrupt job performance, cause stressrelated problems, increased heart rate, fatigue, irritability, tension and lead to unnecessary accidents or injuries on the job.

The workplace can be very noisy.

Both the amount of noise and the duration of exposure determine the ability to damage hearing. Workers may be exposed to noise from many sources: equipment, vehicles, or tools, to name a few. Any of these things can damage hearing when exposure accumulates over extended periods of time. How can you tell if work is too loud and may be causing hearing damage? It’s too loud if: •

You have to raise your voice to be heard.

•

You can’t hear someone less than two feet away without shouting.

•

Speech around you sounds muffled or dull after you leave a noisy area.

•

You have ringing in your ears after exposure to noise.

What can employers do to prevent their workers from developing hearing problems?

Good planning can prevent problems caused by excessive noise exposure.

Noise reduced at its source should be the first consideration. Employers should invest in noise-controlled equipment. When purchasing, employers can ask vendors if there is a "quiet" model or a noise-reducing option, such as enclosed or acoustically lined vehicular cabs and equipment. Work schedules can be adjusted so that exposure to high noise levels does not occur for the entire work day. This allows a noise recovery period to be part of the work shift. Equally important is the use of personal protection devices, such as ear plugs and ear muffs. Employers should provide training on the protection devices available and the effects of noise on hearing if workers do not use the protection. Training should include the fit, use, and care of any hearing protection device.

Employers can’t always prevent noise, but they can lessen the chance of workers experiencing hearing loss by having them follow established safety procedures and enforcing the use of proper hearing protection. Don’t risk losing a worker’s hearing on the job. Silence may be a great thing, but not when its permanent.

Cualquiera de estas fuentes de ruido puede afectar la audición si la exposición se acumula sobre largos períodos. ¿Cómo se puede determinar si el ruido en el trabajo es demasiado intenso y puede ocasionar lesiones auditivas?
