The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) further refined the specifics of its design value reductions to include No. 2 dense wood, which it originally planned to eliminate as a category, in a request submitted today to the American Lumber Standard Committee’s (ALSC) Board of Review.

In its original design value reduction proposal, SPIB omitted the dense category and instead intended to lump it with an “unclassified” category, stating there was not enough data to justify publishing separate design values for dense lumber.

Transition to New Design Values Effective June 1, 2012 The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) has issued Supplement No.9 to the 2002 Standard Grading Rules for Southern Pine Lumber providing new design values effective June 1, 2012. The only design values that will change on June 1 apply to visually graded Southern Pine and Mixed Southern Pine sized 2” to 4” wide and 2” to 4” thick (2x2s through 4x4s) in No.2 and lower grades (No.2, No.3, Stud, Construction, Standard and Utility). SPIB is in the process of submitting new design values for No.2 Dense and No.2 NonDense to the Board of Review of the American Lumber Standard Committee for approval. The new design values for No.2 Dense and No.2 NonDense will also become effective June 1, 2012. Design values for all other grades and sizes of visually graded Southern Pine remain the same, pending results of testing scheduled for completion later in 2012.

“The effective date of June 1 allows for an orderly transition to the new design values,” says Cathy Kaake, SFPA’s senior director of engineered and framing markets. “The intent of the sixmonth transition period is to allow the marketplace to begin to use the new design values or switch to other Southern Pine grades or sizes meeting strength and stiffness requirements,” she adds.

Southern Pine users should establish and begin implementation of a transition plan, but exactly how that is accomplished is up to each individual. One choice could be to complete projects in process with the current design values and to begin using the new design values for new projects.

Another approach could be to begin using the new design values between now and June 1, 2012 to allow for a smooth design and inventory transition.

The Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) continues to facilitate the dialog among key industry segments to help formulate a unified approach to implementation of the new design values.

“We are receiving positive reactions from customer groups and will continue to work with them going forward. The ALSC rulings and SPIB’s supplement provide time for a smooth transition,” Cathy says. Between now and June 1, SFPA will provide more information as it becomes available; check www.southernpine.com frequently for updates, including a new set of questions and answers scheduled for release next week.

BACKGROUND: The last major change for visually graded dimension lumber occurred in 1991 when design values for Southern Pine and other North American species were published based on In-Grade testing of full-size samples of commercially produced lumber. Since 1994, SPIB has conducted an annual resource monitoring program developed in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory (FPL). SPIB is the first rules-writing agency to publish new design values.

Rules-writing agencies responsible for other species are in different stages for evaluating design values.

SFPA does not test lumber or establish design values. SFPA’s primary function is to market lumber products and to help users understand Southern Pine grading rules and design values.

Tips for Learning New Software

Christina Huerta - Friday, January 20, 2012 Do you want to leave your comfort zone, learn a new software program and produce your work with new software today? You probably just answered “No.” Asking people to change the primary software they use every day can be like asking them to enter the frozen tundra in a swimsuit, but the payoff far outweighs the frustration if we can just keep things in perspective. Here are some basic tips to keep in mind when learning new software: •

Patience matters: As daily technology users, we tend to expect to rush through new programs and learn in rapid fire motion, however this method can leave us frustrated, confused and asking ourselves, “How did I get here?” Remember to slow down, give yourself a break and don’t expect to learn everything in one day.

•

Online training webinars: One of the most useful inventions that greatly aids in learning new software is a webinar. Webinars allow a trainer to walk you through specific functions in a step-by-step manner. In addition, most live webinars, like Keymark’s Designer’s Edge, offer attendees an open question forum and deliver a recorded copy of training sessions. Being able to “pause and replay” can be invaluable when learning a new software program.

Practice makes perfect: Hands-on practice is the best way to dig in and learn how to use new software. If you are reluctant to jump right in, you will always feel more frustrated down the road when your boss asks you how it is going on the new software and you haven’t opened the program since your initial training session.

The North American lumber market flatlined last week. Orders made the previous two weeks, and wood that had been making its way through the pipeline, began reaching its destination. Customers switched from building inventory to cataloguing and digesting their new orders. Lumber producers sat by idle phones twiddling their thumbs with little real work.

Benchmark WSPF KD 2x4 #2&Btr prices reacted to the softened demand by losing $10 from the previous week, to land at US$250 mfbm. Most sizes and grades of dimension lumber prices followed suit, across all regions and species.

The lone stand-out with an uptick in prices was Douglas fir, which is generally traded green (as opposed to almost all other lumber which must be kiln dried). Douglas fir lumber producers have had a very difficult time of it in the past couple of years due to a combination of bottoming-out demand and significantly increased fir log exports to Asia.

When lumber prices are depressed, lumber producers keep afloat by selling logs off their land. The margins are much smaller than on milling the timber, but when no one wants the wood and lumber prices are incredibly low, selling logs is a good stop-gap option. It just so happened that on the west coast of the US, small and medium-sized, mostly family-owned, Douglas fir sawmills got caught up in white-hot log demand from offshore. A year ago this situation got so bad that even if a mill had some orders and actually wanted to run wood they could not because they were consistently being outbid for their own logs by hungry Asian buyers.

US west coast log prices shot up as a reflection of this supply-demand situation, and have since stabilized a bit. Douglas fir lumber prices, however, continued to struggle. Only capacity restrictions and a few more mills going out of business eventually brought balance back to the west coast lumber market.

This may well have finally been achieved last week, with green Douglas fir 2x4’s shooting up $12 to end the week at US$230 mfbm, a record high for the past almost two years. Although it should be mentioned that at $230 the lumber is still deeply undervalued and the mills are hard pressed to make any profits at that level.

But at least its a move in the right direction.

In panel, plywood prices returned close to level prior to the hysteria which followed a wildfire that burned down a single plywood plant in Chile early in the New Year.

Software experience includes MiTek, Truswal, Comsoft/IBS, TJ Expert, AutoCAD, and I am willing to learn new software.
