Welcome to Myrtle Beach
Angela Smith
Welcome, everyone, to Myrtle Beach—the magical destination where you can savor mouthwatering seafood, unwind on sun-kissed shores, and bring all your softball dreams to life.
The amazing ASANA board and I are proud and excited to showcase this incredible place.
As you take in the week’s events, take a moment to enjoy the soothing sounds of the ocean and allow yourself to slow down and relax. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, playing a round of putt-putt golf, or indulging in one of the many seafood buffets, be sure to connect with friends and create lasting memories.
As we celebrate another incredible ASANA Softball World Series, I’m reminded of the many powerful quotes from one of my favorite movies, Field of Dreams.
“If you build it, they will come.”
“Did you ever hold a ball or a glove to your face?”
“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again.”
“But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again.”
“Ohhhhhhhhh, people will come, Ray. People will definitely come.”
Thank you for coming to Myrtle Beach and for making ASANA great!
On behalf of myself, the ASANA board, the city of Myrtle Beach, and our amazing volunteers, we welcome you to the beach and a week filled with softball and memories.
See you around the ballpark,

Angela Smith ASANA Executive Director executivedirector@asanaseries.org

From Life Stress to Game Focus:
How Adult Athletes Can Manage Performance Anxiety by Controlling What Matters
Kelly Oberle, Access Human Potential

For many adult athletes, competition day doesn’t just start on game day. It starts days earlier— juggling work deadlines, family commitments, and the inevitable curveballs life throws our way. Those responsibilities don’t disappear when it’s time to compete, and the mental weight they carry can spill over into performance, fueling anxiety and making it harder to focus. The good news? You can’t stop life from being busy, but you can learn to shift your attention toward what you can control—on and off the field—so you show up ready, composed, and confident.
The Link Between Life Stress and Performance Anxiety
Adult athletes face a unique challenge: sport is a passion, not a paycheck. That means you’re competing because you love it—but you also have a full life outside of it. When your mind is overloaded with work meetings, relationship issues, or personal responsibilities, it’s easy for those thoughts to linger as you step into competition.
This mental “carryover effect” blurs the line between everyday stress and gameday focus.
You might find yourself:
• Overthinking every play or movement
• Feeling unusually tense or jittery before a game
• Losing confidence in situations you normally handle well
• Struggling to stay present and react quickly.
Performance anxiety in these moments isn’t just about the game—it’s about being overloaded mentally and trying to do too much at once.
Why Controllables Matter
The fastest way to free your mind from unnecessary pressure is to separate what you can control from what you can’t.
Controllables are the elements you directly influence:
• Effort you put into each play
• Your preparation before the game
• How you communicate with teammates and coaches
• Your body language and energy level
• Your focus in the moment
Uncontrollables are everything else:
• Your opponent’s skill level
• Weather conditions
• Umpires, coaches and players actions
• Spectator behavior
• Unexpected life disruptions before the game.
Focusing on controllables isn’t about ignoring reality, it’s about making sure your energy is spent where it counts. The more you anchor your attention to what you can influence, the less mental space you give to things that drain focus and confidence.
Final Thoughts: Winning the Mental Game
Life stress is part of being an adult athlete. But performance anxiety doesn’t have to control the way you compete. By focusing on the controllables—your effort, preparation, mindset, and presence—you create a mental buffer between outside-life challenges and your ability to perform.

What is Gullah–Geechee Culture?
Kelly Oberle, Access Human Potential
The Gullah–Geechee story is one of survival, creativity, and enduring community. These are the descendants of West Africans brought to the Carolina, Georgia, and Florida coasts during the transatlantic slave trade. In the Lowcountry and Sea Islands— often in isolated, self-sustaining communities—they kept alive much of their African heritage while blending it with new-world experiences. The result is a culture with its own language, crafts, food, music, and traditions that remain vibrant today.
Why is it important to know?
Because Gullah–Geechee culture is more than history—it’s a living thread in the fabric of the South Carolina coast. Understanding it means recognizing the resilience of a people who built and preserved their identity in the face of systemic oppression. It means honoring contributions that shaped the region’s cuisine, architecture, agriculture, and music—many of which we still enjoy today without always knowing their roots.
Its impact is all around us. From the sweetgrass baskets sold along the roadside, to the flavors of shrimp and grits, to the rhythms of storytelling and song, the Gullah–Geechee influence runs deep.
Learning about it enriches any visit to Myrtle Beach, connecting you not just to a destination, but to the generations who made this coastline home.
Who Are They?
The Gullah–Geechee people are descendants of West Africans brought to the Lowcountry and Sea Islands of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida during the transatlantic slave trade. Thanks to geographic isolation and strong community ties, they developed a distinctive culture that blends African traditions with new-world adaptations—preserving language, foodways, music, and craftwork that remain vibrant today.
Myrtle Beach sits within the federally designated Gullah–Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, a National Heritage Area established by the U.S. Congress in 2006. This corridor recognizes the rich history, resilience, and living traditions of Gullah–Geechee communities along the southeastern coast.
What is Gullah–Geechee Culture?
Key Elements of Gullah–Geechee Culture
• Language & Storytelling –The Gullah language is an Englishbased creole with strong African linguistic roots. It survives through oral storytelling, spirituals, and family traditions.
• Sweetgrass Basketry – Handwoven baskets made from local marsh grasses reflect West African craftsmanship, passed down through generations.
• Cuisine – Dishes like hoppin’ John, okra soup, gumbo, and red rice connect directly to West African foodways, celebrating community and history.
• Spiritual & Musical Traditions – The ‘ring shout,’ spirituals, and call-andresponse singing are deeply rooted in African worship practices.
Ties to the Myrtle Beach Area

Atlantic Beach – Known as ‘The Black Pearl,’ Atlantic Beach is a four block oceanside gem and was one of the few beaches Black families could visit during segregation. Founded by Gullah–Geechee families in the 1930s, it became a haven for leisure, culture, and entrepreneurship.

Sweetgrass Markets – Along the South Carolina coast, you can find artisans selling traditional baskets, a skill still practiced by Gullah–Geechee weavers.
Booker T. Washington Neighborhood – Historically significant in Myrtle Beach for its African American community life, with cultural and civic institutions that echo Gullah–Geechee heritage.
Ties to the Myrtle Beach Area
Atlantic Beach – Explore the historic ‘Black Pearl’ and its cultural events. Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum – Offers insight into African American education during segregation.
Located at 900 Dunbar Street, the museum is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday Wednesday and Friday.)
Freewoods Farm – This is a 40-acre living farm museum showing life on a small African American family farm between 1865 and 1900. 9515 Freewoods Road Myrtle Beach, SC 29588
Visiting these sites offers more than history—it’s an opportunity to honor the resilience of the Gullah–Geechee people, connect with living traditions, and better understand the rich cultural fabric of the Myrtle Beach region.

Myrtle Beach Group Cooking Recipes
Team-tested meals that turn any rental kitchen into home base.

Traveling for the Series isn’t just about the games — it’s about the people you share them with. After a long day on the fields, nothing beats a meal that feeds the whole crew, fuels tomorrow’s games, and makes the trip feel like a true team experience.
These three recipes are built for the road: they serve eight or more, use simple, easy-to-find ingredients, and can be made in just about any rental kitchen.
Pro Tip for Rental Kitchens
Pack one or two large skillets, a sharp knife, and a cutting board. These basics make group cooking so much easier — and faster.
And because no Myrtle Beach trip is complete without it, we’ve included a true local classic — Lowcountry Shrimp & Grits.
Lowcountry Shrimp & Grits (Regional Favorite)
Serves: 8–10 | Total Time: ~45 minutes
This dish is a Myrtle Beach must-have. Creamy, cheesy grits topped with smoky sausage and tender shrimp bring that signature Lowcountry flavor straight to your rental kitchen.
Ingredients

• 2 lbs large shrimp, peeled & deveined
• 1 lb andouille sausage, sliced
• 1 large onion, diced
• 1 green bell pepper, diced
• 3 cloves garlic, minced
• 4 cups chicken broth
• 2 cups stone-ground grits
• 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
• ½ cup heavy cream
• 4 tbsp butter
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp smoked paprika
• Salt & pepper to taste
• Green onions for garnish
Instructions
1. Bring chicken broth to a boil in a large pot. Slowly whisk in grits, reduce heat, and simmer for 20–25 minutes until thickened. Stir in cheese, cream, and 2 tbsp butter.
2. In a skillet, heat olive oil. Brown the sausage, then add onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes.
3. Add shrimp, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until shrimp turn pink, about 3–4 minutes.
4. Spoon the sausage-and-shrimp mixture over the cheesy grits. Garnish with chopped green onions.
5. Pair it with: A crisp Sauvignon Blanc or a local wheat beer.
Sheet Pan BBQ Chicken & Veggies

This sheet pan dinner is low-fuss, hearty, and easy to clean up. Perfect after a long beach day.
Ingredients
• 4 lbs bone-in chicken thighs or drumsticks

• 1 large red onion, cut into wedges
• 3 tbsp olive oil
• Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

2. Toss potatoes, carrots, and onion with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread across two large baking sheets.
3. Arrange chicken on top and brush generously with BBQ sauce.
4. Bake 40–50 minutes, basting chicken halfway through.
5. Serve right from the pans for a family-style dinner with minimal cleanup.
6. Pair it with: Sweet iced tea, peach sangria, or a South Carolina pale ale.
One-Pot Creamy Cajun Pasta
Serves: 8–9 | Total Time: ~35 Minutes
