Liz’s path to becoming Netwatch’s Quality Assurance Lead was anything but ordinary. A computer science graduate from Maynooth University, she had always admired Netwatch, a company well-regarded in her local community. When she first applied for a software developer position, the role went to another candidate, but instead of closing the door, it opened an even greater opportunity. Netwatch recognized the promise in her background and drive, and saw the chance to match her skills to a role where she could truly thrive.

At the time, the company was introducing Zendesk, a ticketing system Liz had used in a previous role.

Netwatch offered her a position to lead the rollout, and that short-term project turned into a launchpad.

When Netwatch began building its first-ever quality assurance department, her skills and technical background made her an ideal fit. She became the company's first QA hire, tasked with shaping the department from the ground up.

From there, her career accelerated. Today, Liz leads a team of two QA engineers, overseeing processes that ensure the systems clients receive, from software updates to system integrations, work

seamlessly when it matters most.

"Quality is in our name," Liz said. “Our job is to make sure customers get something that works exactly the way it's meant to."

Launched in the UK in 2001, WCCTV is a worldwide leader in manufacturing and supplying mobile video surveillance products specifically engineered to operate via cellular networks. The company’s mission has always been to pair technological innovation with robust service, creating solutions that work in realworld environments where connectivity and power are often unavailable.

That success story crossed the Atlantic in 2015 when WCCTV established its U.S. headquarters in Dallas.

Since that time, growth has been rapid, with the

customers across key markets while maintaining close proximity to major infrastructure and construction hubs.

The company’s origin traces back to a joint venture between a mobile phone provider and a video surveillance firm. The idea was straightforward yet significantly different than other solutions available at the time: insert a SIM card into a camera and stream the video over 2G networks.

“We didn’t know the traditional methods of breaking into the security industry,” Haworth recalls. “We simply tested the concept with our existing customers. Very quickly, public safety agencies saw the potential.”

This early traction catapulted WCCTV into supplying security cameras for government use across the country. But when the global financial crisis unfolded in 2008, public funding streams tightened, forcing WCCTV to reimagine its business model and get creative.

“We realized we had to diversify and make the business more resilient,” Haworth explains. The solution was the development of fully standalone surveillance towers, launched in 2009, which marked the beginning of WCCTV’s entry into the technology-as-a-service model.

By focusing on critical infrastructure projects, WCCTV unlocked steady, long-term revenue streams. Early partnerships with the country’s critical infrastructure agencies demonstrated the value of recurring contracts and reinforced the company’s reputation as a trusted solutions provider.

“We were privately owned, so everything we reinvested was self-funded,” Haworth notes. “But the demand grew quickly, and the rental model became a scalable business that played to our strengths in wireless connectivity and surveillance.”

The success in the UK laid the foundation for international expansion. By 2013, WCCTV set its sights on the United States, where Haworth personally spearheaded the effort.

“I went back to the beginning — two people, an office in Texas, and the goal of proving the model all over again,” he says.

The formula worked. Focusing initially on public safety and construction sectors, WCCTV’s U.S. business steadily expanded, eventually attracting private equity investment to accelerate growth.

WCCTV differentiates itself by offering a true turn-key solution. Beyond providing market-leading surveillance hardware, the company delivers end-to-end services including equipment installation, LTE connectivity, video monitoring, maintenance, and U.S.-based customer support. This approach ensures customers are not left to stitch together disparate systems; instead, they receive an integrated solution that is fully operational from day one.

“Our value proposition sits at the high end of technical capability while remaining nimble in cost,” Haworth explains. “We’ll never be the cheapest in the market, but we pride ourselves on making sure our systems are always operational, and our customers are always supported.”

The U.S. expansion also led WCCTV to Netwatch. Early on, the company struggled to find a monitoring partner aligned with its vision. Many monitoring stations were more focused on driving volume than delivering service excellence. Netwatch and its sister company, National Monitoring Center, however, stood out.

“They really understood our value proposition,” says Haworth. “Netwatch positioned themselves as a true partner — helping us deliver service, innovate together, and grow. Our cultures are very similar: we are both ambitious, growth-minded, and focused on quality.”

The partnership has enabled WCCTV to scale its business and impact, combining its video surveillance solutions with Netwatch’s AI-driven video monitoring services. Together, they provide customers with not just cameras, but comprehensive security infrastructures.

When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted industries worldwide, WCCTV’s business model proved to be highly valuable. Construction sites and real estate projects faced reduced staff presence, which left onsite assets vulnerable. Public safety agencies grappled with empty schools and municipal buildings. WCCTV’s

mobile units, powered by solar energy and managed remotely, were able to fill a critical gap.

“Customers wanted the ability to monitor projects from afar without deploying personnel on-site,” Haworth explains. “We were able to provide those solutions immediately. It underscored the adaptability of our platform and business model.”

The security industry has long been reactive — focused on responding after incidents occur. WCCTV is working to change that. Over the past five years, the company has invested in building a next-generation platform capable of managing far more than intrusion alerts.

“We’ve created a system that integrates IoT sensors for fire detection, environmental monitoring, weather alerts, and even worker safety compliance,” says Haworth. For example, a single lightning detector on a large construction site can now trigger multiple devices across the area, automatically issuing safety warnings.

Artificial intelligence at the edge is also becoming central. Instead of merely identifying a person, intelligent technologies can analyze behavior before

sending alerts to monitoring stations. This ability to pair video with sensor data provides customers with actionable intelligence, not just raw video footage.

“Our goal is to help customers become more proactive in managing risk,” Haworth emphasizes. “We’re turning the video we’ve been providing to our customers for 25 years into data-driven insights that build efficiency and strengthen safety.”

What began as a small start-up in the UK has grown into a thriving transatlantic business, driven by WCCTV’s ability to adapt, its focus on customers, and the strength of the partnerships it has built along the way.

“Our team thrives on growth and shares a real dedication to service,” Haworth says. “That commitment is what sets us apart.”

MASTERING THE SKY

By Andrew Corsaro In a recent article, security thought leaders discussed the proliferation of unmanned aerial systems (UASs), better known as drones, and their potential as a new threat vector in many physical security scenarios ranging from smuggling and aviation interference to espionage and terrorist acts. The outcome of these discussions emphasized that drone security awareness entails looking and thinking beyond our industry's traditional, terrestrial measures for threat prevention, investigation, and response.

When forming a strategy to deal with this threat, companies have multiple drone detection technologies to consider, including radar, passive radio frequency (RF), electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) pan-tilt-zoom (PTV) cameras, and acoustic. While it’s possible to build a solution using only one of these,

the best solutions combine multiple sensor types to get a more informative picture of the detected drone. This “sensor fusion” approach incorporates the strengths of each system element and uses them in orchestration to produce superior results.

Determining your sensor modalities is crucial in counter-drone planning because different sensors provide diverse and complementary data essential for accurate detection, identification, and tracking.

Let’s briefly examine the sensor types individually, including their key strengths and limitations.

Radar sensors are active sensors that emit radio waves, which travel through the air and reflect off objects in their paths. By analyzing the returned signals, radars can determine the presence, position, and movement of objects.

This tech is essential in counter-drone programs where detecting and tracking small, low-flying drones are paramount. Be aware that active radar systems that monitor ground or airspace are subject to FCC license requirements.

Passive RF sensors are tools for detecting and tracking drones. Unlike active radar systems, passive RF sensors do not emit signals. Instead, they monitor the RF emissions from drones and their ground control stations (GCS). By analyzing these RF signals, passive RF sensors can identify and locate drones based on their unique radio signatures. This reduces the risk of alerting drone operators to counter-drone activities while minimizing interference with other electronic systems. Passive RF sensors are especially effective in environments where covert drone detection is crucial.

Electro-optical (EO)/Infrared (IR) sensors, commonly known as pan-tiltzoom (PTZ) cameras, use advanced camera technologies to capture visual (EO) and thermal (IR) data, providing a comprehensive picture of your environment. EO sensors are highly effective in daylight conditions, capturing high-resolution images that can be analyzed to identify drones based on their visual signatures. IR sensors, on the other hand, detect heat emissions from drones, making them invaluable for nighttime operations or scenarios where visual detection is challenging.

Acoustic sensors are a technology for detecting drones based on their sound signatures. These systems utilize arrays of sensitive microphones to capture the unique acoustic emissions generated by drone motors and propellers. Each drone model produces distinct sound patterns and frequencies, both of which can be analyzed to identify and locate the source. Acoustic detection is particularly useful in environments where visual or RF-based methods may be less effective, such as in dense urban areas or heavily forested regions.

The ideal drone detection system has three sensor components: RF, radar, and EO/IR (PTZ cameras.) Each system has unique capabilities that complement the others while offsetting their limitations.

Passive RF is one of the most common methods for detecting drone activity because it is cost-effective and reasonably reliable for identifying the presence of drones and other RF-emitting devices. RF detection can capture technical details such as the drone’s make, model, and communication signals, and in some cases, its Remote ID — a unique identifier required by the FAA. These details provide valuable data for assessing a detected drone’s activity and comparing it against historical records.

However, used on its own, RF drone detection creates visibility gaps in cases where a drone is “flying dark” by not emitting an RF signal.

Dark drones generally evade RF signal emission by being programmed to travel to a specific GPS waypoint. In many cases, this can be suspiciously elusive and serve nefarious purposes for dangerous payload delivery or malicious activity.

To spot dark drones, you need a secondary method like radar. Radar sensors don’t care whether a drone is emitting a signal; they just know the drone is present. When a dark drone flies into the security perimeter, radar will likely pick it up. And yet on its own, radar without RF also presents many challenges. Unlike RF, radar lacks the ability to capture technical details. Radar also has frequent blind spots at low altitudes, difficulty differentiating targets, and susceptibility to interference.

What happens next is crucial. As soon as your solution detects a drone, you want to visualize the drone as quickly as possible using cameras to start assessing its payload and taking action as needed.

By closing the gaps of an RF-only or radar-only system and using PTZ cameras to complete the picture, a multi-sensor solution decreases your risk of missing an imminent threat.

Multi-sensor solutions succeed by fusing two or more sensor types within a single drone detection solution and delivering their output to a central dashboard for assessment and response. This response typically takes the form of security personnel pursuing manual action, but you might also design your system to execute programmatic tasks based on thresholds you have set for dronerelated events, including specific alerts and their corresponding actions. Alerts in a multi-sensor solution are more reliable and actionable than alerts in a single-sensor system, because of the granular data provided by multiple sensors.

By this centralized method, a multi-sensor solution can automate the tracking of a detected drone in helpful ways. The system can track a drone’s movements on cameras pointed directly at it, rather than relying on drone response operators to follow the drone using a joystick as it flies around.

Meanwhile, the system can capture comprehensive information about the drone and check it against historical data you’ve collected to see whether it’s a known device to you, and if so, how its current movements compare to its behavior in the past.

Much of a counter-drone program’s success relies on the ready availability of data. While you can store drone ID data in a local database, a common enhancement is to contract with software solution providers who deliver this storage service. The main advantage of outsourcing this role is that the external provider will continuously update your system with new information about drone types and capabilities, like the over-the-air updates you might receive on the navigation system in your car.

Using this means your drone detection solution can always identify new drone models that have arrived on the market, as well as any new signal types.

As for telemetry, a superior drone detection solution will also store historical data pertaining to drone activity at your facility. This means that you can look up a drone by its serial number (which you detect via RF sensor) and look up what flights it's flown previously and take action based on actual intelligence, not guesswork. Local telemetry data is also useful for whitelisting drones you know to be harmless based on previous identification and the telemetry patterns you’ve observed.

Think about the alternative to having a centralized dashboard: data arriving piecemeal in various locations at different times. Without a clear and composite visual of the drone with its information in one place, drone response operators spend valuable time piecing together data and trying to locate the drone on cameras as it continues to move. In this lost time might lie the vulnerability to grievous error.

It’s crucial that you continually assess your company’s risk from the threat of drone activities. If you find you are vulnerable and need drone detection capabilities, it’s likely that a multi-sensor design will be your best option. A multi-sensor drone detection system offers a comprehensive, futureready approach, enabling you to visualize, coordinate, and respond to aerial threats in real time. By fusing data from multiple inputs, it enhances situational awareness and strengthens your operational readiness with meaningful alerts, better-informed procedures, and a growing historical database. If your risk assessment reveals a vulnerability, investing in this type of layered solution may be the most effective step you can take.

How does Altura prioritize security across its branch locations and digital services?

Security is always top of mind for us — it's layered into everything we do, both physically and digitally. At our branches, we focus on creating a strong security presence that doesn’t feel intrusive but is clearly there to protect our members and employees. On the digital side, we work closely with our Information Security team to ensure our systems are protected with up-to-date tools, monitoring, and protocols. Whether someone walks into a branch or logs in online, our goal is to make sure they feel safe and confident in that experience.

How do you ensure members feel secure?

It really comes down to being proactive, visible, and thoughtful. We want our members to know we’re paying attention. From secure entry protocols to ATM monitoring

and after-hours virtual guarding, every detail matters. But it’s also about how we show up — our team is trained to be aware and responsive, and our members notice that.

In what ways has Altura adapted its security practices to support a more customer-centric banking experience?

We’ve really leaned into the idea that security should enhance the member experience, not be in the way of it. We’ve also opened up more two-way communication with members, so they feel informed and empowered, especially around things like fraud prevention and personal safety.

How does your team stay informed about emerging risks or evolving security concerns?

We’re constantly learning — whether it’s through industry webinars, local partnerships, or vendor updates, my team stays plugged into what’s happening in the field. I also believe in building strong relationships with other departments and external partners so we’re never operating in a silo. Threats evolve, so we have to evolve with them. That means staying curious, staying connected, and sharing what we learn with the broader organization.

How do you balance security with convenience for members?

That’s probably one of the biggest challenges, but also where thoughtful design comes in. We don’t want members to feel like they’re walking into a fortress. Our goal is to make security seamless — strong but not heavy-handed. That might look like implementing technology that reduces friction while still keeping control in place. We want members to move through our spaces and systems with ease while we quietly do the work of keeping them safe.

What role does employee training or member education play in maintaining a secure environment?

It’s huge. We can put all the systems and cameras in place, but if people aren’t trained or aware, we’re missing the mark. Our team members go through ongoing training to recognize risks, follow procedures, and know how to respond under pressure. For our members, education is just as important — especially when it comes to digital safety. We try to meet them where they are, whether that’s through workshops, oneon-one conversations, or easily accessible resources.

How has your role evolved over the years? How have the credit union’s operations evolved or changed?

My role has definitely grown with the organization.

When I’m looking at Corporate Security, I’m always looking for the next advancement. How we secure our buildings must be fluid — just like the threat landscape is. It’s vital to surround yourself with innovative partners who can take a forward vision and bring it to life.

Her proudest achievement is not a single milestone but her ongoing ability to balance a fast-paced career with her family life.

"In the next five years, AI will transform how we detect, analyze, and respond to threats,” she says. “With predictive capabilities, systems will move from simply reacting to risks to anticipating and preventing them before they occur."

Danny Carthy, a student from Bagenalstown and member of the Irish Traveller community, redefined what it means to lead. By mentoring others through the Big Brother and Big Sister program, he created a culture of encouragement in his school, showing classmates that

leadership is rooted in respect and care. Danny’s example demonstrates how choosing to uplift others can alter how a whole community sees its own potential.

A team of students from St. Leo’s College sparked dialogue with their “Phoneless Phobia” project, exploring the impact of constant digital connection on real-world relationships and mental health. Their work ignited conversations among peers and earned them the Community Safety Award, reminding everyone that awareness and reflection are essential building blocks of community wellbeing.

Superintendent Anthony Farrell praised the winners for their selflessness and spirit, noting how many overcame adversity to better the lives of others. “Through their actions,” he said, “they have changed focus from themselves to others in their community – small acts of thoughtfulness and kindness do make a real difference.”
