This is an internship where you won’t be an average intern – you will be a fully integrated team member at Compass Digital Labs. Working directly with our teams, you will contribute and learn as any new employee would.

The Compass Digital Labs internship program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from a wide range of educational programs. You will dive right into challenging but exciting real-world projects that we are currently working on.

Core Team Internship Solve real problems.

The CDL U Core Program focuses on the fundamental aspects of our business. Interns will join the team corresponding to their educational discipline and they will work on building, evolving, and improving our in-market products and initiatives. Interns work on an agile team of designers, developers, engineers, and marketers to meet deadlines, solve business problems, and build new product features, driving revenue along the way.

Incubator Internship Realize your ideas.

Every applicant to CDL U has the opportunity to submit a great innovative product concept on how to disrupt customer service in the hospitality industry. Every CDL U semester one idea will be selected and realized by our CDL U Incubator team. A pod comprised of students filling the roles of product managers, developers, engineers, and designers will bring the selected idea to fruition. With the guidance of CDL team mentors and the resources of a technology company, the pod will plan, resource, and develop their product so that it can be considered for investment at a final presentation to Compass Digital Labs’ executive leadership. If the pod-produced product proves valuable to the business it will be fully funded and brought to market.

Brian is a long-time member of the CDL Team. He is one of the Scrum Masters at CDL and has been an important asset in leading our development interns, mentoring them not only on their hard skills but, teaching them how to navigate the inter-team waters of development.

As a product manager, Iwona is a pioneer of our product road map.

Juggling the needs of the business and the experience of the customer, Iwona assures that our products stay top of mind to our customers and at the front of the market.

Pilar co-leads the UX Design team.

She mentors UX Design interns, driving them to think about user experience from a human perspective. Pilar works with both the Core and Incubator programs.

You will be provided with all the office essentials you will need to get started. Every intern will get a professional headshot – make sure to come photo-ready on your first day.

This experience was truly enriching because I was passionate about the project. I was able to learn coding through experimentation on various platforms – this grew my interest in web development. I enjoyed working in a pod as I got the opportunity to develop meaningful connections, ask for feedback and incorporate our ideas together. As my first internship, it was a surreal experience, in a supportive environment and I know that I will always hold it close to my heart.

As Incubator interns we were able to work as our own little department. We made all the decisions, set our own deadlines, and took responsibility for our own tasks, but had a network of mentors to guide us. This gave us a lot of room to expand our knowledge and skills. Everyone at CDL was willing to answer questions and give feedback, teaching us something new. I have acquired so many new skills being able to work so closely with nearly every team/departments at CDL.

This is the second internship that I’ve done and while I learned a lot from my first, the amount of knowledge and hands-on experience I’ve gained while working at CDL is unbelievable.

I’ve learned more than I thought possible about UX design, working in an agile environment, and working as part of a team. From day one, I was treated like a new colleague, with similar expectations to any other member of the team.

The work I’ve been doing has had a real impact and I feel like my ideas and input are not only recognized but appreciated.

My internship at CDL was a very authentic learning experience and the environment was very positive. People are very encouraging and supportive. I felt very comfortable throughout the entire time with my leads and with other teams. On top of that, this entire experience made me learn more about myself in terms of how I can use my mind and skill set in a professional environment as a student, and into my future.

This is was my first internship and my experience at CDL has been nothing short of amazing. Day in and day out I was surrounded by the best designers ever! What struck me the most is CDL’s drive towards innovation. I was encouraged to bring my own ideas to the table and then given the chance to realize them. CDL offered me a chance to grow immensely both as a designer and as a person in an incredibly diverse environment that thrives on creativity.

Part of the advantage of the internship at CDL is that it didn’t make me feel like an intern. I feel like a designer.

CDL gave us the freedom to work in the way that’s best for us and to build a product from concept to reality. We researched, designed, and implemented the application from scratch.

As a developer, I got to use and learn the most current and powerful technology to build the application. Building an application from scratch provided me with great experience in programming for a web application.

2018 Incubator Project: Food Waste Goal: Reduce food waste and create a social impact.

The Incubator interns at Compass Digital Labs saw an actionable problem with food waste. Canadians waste nearly one-third of food produced. With such a great reach, Compass Group would provide an amazing opportunity to reduce food waste and aid in growing a substantial social impact.

The Solution The Compass Digital Labs Incubator interns built a web-based product that creates social connections for charities and businesses. That product is called “Shift,� which instantly connects charities to local businesses with a surplus of high-quality food that would otherwise go to waste. Charities can also actively voice their needs, which can then be matched by the appropriate businesses.

Project Time-line May Research and Discovery - Diving into the problem with qualitative research, surveys, on-site interviews, and observations, the pod got to know their audience first-hand through quantitative research analyzing data sources on local food waste.

June Design and Development - The pod assessed all of their findings and, with guidance from their mentors, began the process of creating their active sprints, building out the UX and UI in tandem with Development.

July Testing and MVP - As the product grows into an MVP, the pod works on final details and begins the QA process.

August Pilot - The pod takes initial findings from QA and begins iterations of their product before beginning a field pilot.

2018 Core Team Projects

Designing a Design System What do you know about Design Systems?

That was the first thing Jenna was asked as a core team intern at Compass Digital Labs. Jenna had a base knowledge of Design Systems but was eager to learn more.

Jenna’s contribution to the Compass Digital Labs Design system, playfully named The Playground Design System, was building and defining core rules and elements. In collaboration, Jenna and mentor Pilar, broke down the existing mobile app and categorized each element, component, and pattern to assemble the core rules of the system. From this, they were able to start modifying existing screens and UI into a new grid and build a foundation to use when building new features and screens.

Jenna was able to put this system to use by creating and organizing new icons, font styles, and elements and implemented changes within the current apps to better align with iOS and Android standards.

12X Project Creating a handcrafted and transformative product experience. “How can we create a product that our user truly loves?�

12X is part research, part strategic innovation, and part product design.

Mentored by Ashley Mauerhofer, Umar took a deep dive into understanding Compass Digital Labs product users, analyzing what drives them to products and using data, coupled with design, to imagine the best experience.

12X is built on three pillars.

1. The value of understanding the user you’re designing for.

The 12X project challenged Umar to learn first-hand the multiple types of end users and to understand them as people and not just in relation to the product.

2. A friend in data.

Mobile data gives clear visibility into the variety of food trends at particular times. This allowed Umar to validate or invalidate assumptions, leveraging data to influence design.

3. The balance between creativity and technicality.

As a designer, Umar had to walk a fine line between being technically minded and creatively minded. With 12X, he learned to balance the two, opening himself to new scenarios, journeys, and outcomes while juggling the constraints of data.
