reetings fellow Maine Breeders and enthusiast!

As I sit down to write down this fall’s President’s Address, I hope the fall moisture has found your ranch and you were able to put up enough feed.

The second half of 2023 will go down as record cattle prices, so I’m hoping everyone can take advantage of them and they hang around for the future. I believe as long as cow numbers remain low, prices will. All I have to say is that no ranch should have average or below-average cows or bulls with these kinds of prices across the board; it’s a perfect time to strictly cull the cow herd and sire pen. So go out and replace them with those top-end producing cattle. As you look through the Maine Mail, feel free to reach out to breeders and see what they have to improve your program. The demand for those top-end bulls last spring was unprecedented for Maine Anjou sires. As you can see, this fall, those Maine females are demanding record dollars. We’ve noticed many commercial and purebred Angus operations seeing the value and demand for the Maine Angus females, whether building a commercial cow herd or seeing the high demand in breeding up the high Maine seedstock off the Maine Angus females.

The breeds compliment each other so well. Not only in herds, but feeder cattle excel in the feed yards and packing plants. All I have to say is if you have a predominantly Angus commercial base or a Sim Angus cow herd, try a Maine bull, and you’ll be very impressed with the results.

This past summer, we had our AGM meeting in Kingston, Ontario, and as always, it was wonderful. The meeting was pretty uneventful itself, but the cattle tours and visiting with fellow 4 MAINE MAIL FALL ISSUE 2023

Stu Byman breeders made for a tremendous time. Anytime you can get everyone together to talk cattle and visit predominantly about the Maine Anjou breed, it is excellent. Everyone is very passionate, whether you’re breeding fullbloods, purebreds, or percentage; we are all working with Maine Genetics to obtain the same goal: producing top end Maine influenced cattle that go out and work for the commercial cattlemen. I really want to touch on the hospitality that was given by the Ontario group. Our weekend entailed breakfast and a tour shown by the dairy producers of Ontario, a Riverboat dinner cruise, Kim Perry’s homemade pies, and the Benders hosting everyone on Sunday for a beautiful brisket meal.

There were phenomenal Maine Anjou cattle to view with some great socializing; there isn’t a better combo.

This fall, please take the time to get out and view the Maine Anjou cattle at the fall shows and see if that next female or sire might be there for your program. Farmfair International has significantly large prize money that draws out some of the very best Maine Cattle, and Canadian Western Agribition will have very high-end females in Maines on the Plaines sale from producers all across Canada. If you have bulls this coming year, please take the time to care and develop them for breeding season, so they are in the ultimate condition for breeding. From the association, we haven’t seen the demand for Maine Anjou bulls for commercial use like we have in previous years. Furthermore, if you have sires for sale, take advantage of this spring’s sire directory for advertising. Good luck with everyone’s upcoming show season!

T

his year has been a productive and exciting year for Maine Anjou cattle. Manie genetics are in demand and the Maine influence animals are exceling at auction marts and feedlots across Canada and the US.

The Ontario Association worked hard to put together some great events and activities for us at the 2023 AGM held in Kingston, Ontario on Aug 26-27, 2023. The events were well received, and it was great to see many of our eastern members in attendance.

We understand the transition to mandatory testing for Bull calves has been difficult for not only our members, but also running efficiently and effectively within our registry system at the office. We have more information in the attached document as to long-term costeffective solutions for our membership going forward.

It was realized during this process that the board and office was not fully prepared for what would be involved on both sides to proceed with these changes.

Effective January 1, 2024, the board has put in place the following motion: “All bull calves beginning in 2024 will get a conditional black and white certificate noting that TH/ PHA testing is incomplete until which time testing is completed (unless animal is confirmed Free by pedigree). This conditional registration is not transferable or eligible for breeding by natural or AI service until test results are back and Free.

If the animal tests positive, and registration is pursued, all progeny of both sexes must be tested Free to be registered.”

The board make this decision to align more closely with the recommendations of AMAA and based on feedback received from our membership. We hope this will assist in alleviating some of the shortfalls of implementing this program going forward.

It has come to our attention and that of other Canadian Breed Associations that there has potentially been use of US genetics in Canada that were not qualified for export from the US. We will be working together to closely monitor the use of foreign genetics as they pertain to qualified use in Canada, and we will be requesting CSS semen codes on those animals in question.

Our Junior Calendar for 2023 was a great success and we are in the final stages of building the 2024 calendar. There are still a few spaces left for those wishing to advertise.

We should be proud where our Maine Anjou animals stand in the industry and the quality of animals our association represents whether it be in the show ring, pasture or feed yard. We need to continue that enthusiasm moving forward and continue encouraging young breeders to take on a Maine or Maine influence project. We look forward to another great year of our Mane-Anjou breeders producing quality seedstock for the cattle industry!

1. STUART BYMAN PRESIDENT Hi my name is Stuart Byman, I am the current president and have been the past 3 years. I was also president for 5 years around 2010 and have been a director for many years. I reside close to Wadena Sask where my wife, Susanne and son Jonas, operate a grain and cattle operation. My sons Tyson, Winston and Daughter Adrian the Jr (herdsman) all help out on the farm when home, but are all attending the University of Saskatchewan right now. I have been involved with Maine Anjou breed for 35 years, and our cow herd is predominantly Maines, we do have some Angus and Simmental. I am very passionate about the Maine Anjou breed and what they have to offer to the cattle industry. If your ever our way stop by for a tour of the cattle and a coffee.

2. KODY RODDICK VICE PRESIDENT I grew up in Wyoming On, showing Maine Anjou cattle in 4H and in various Jr. Shows across Canada and the US. My interest in cattle and farming continued and as I studied Livestock Production at Lakeland College, before moving back to Ontario to start my own herd.

I now run 80 Maine and Maintainer pairs with my wife and our 3 daughters. I’m very excited about watching the next generation in the show ring.

3. JOSIE PASHULKA SECRETARY Owns Rusylvia Cattle Co with husband Ken and 3 sons Tyson, Riley and Taylor. They Run 400 cows with Purebred herds of Maine Anjou, Black Angus and Simmental including a commercial cow herd. They also grow 2500 acres of hay, cereal silage, grazing corn ,barley, oats, soft white wheat and canola. The family has enjoyed showing cattle across western Canada and Denver with many show champions at purebred, junior and jackpot shows.

They use AI and ET extensively in their herd and Josie has enjoyed teaching AI at Lakeland College for the last 17 years as well as being an auditor for the Verifed Beef Program. Josie has been on the CMAA board for 4 years and is focused on developing and maintaining a junior program within the CMAA.

4. JORDAN RETZLAFF TREASURER Joined the CMAA board in 2019, currently the treasurer.

Grew up in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. Exposed to the Maine-Anjou breed early through my Grandpa, Glenn

Davidson. Got a diploma in Livestock Production from Lakeland College in Vermilion. Started Pick Six Cattle in 2014 when we decided to get back into purebred Maine-Anjou cattle. Currently running about 130 head of Purebred and Commercial cattle, bred to entirely Maine bulls.

recently built within the breed moving forward. I am involved with organizing the annual Ontario Select Maine Anjou Sale at Hoards STN., Ont,Saturday November 19,2022. I have also work fulltime as an Agribussiness Instructor for the Corrctional Sevices of Canada for over 30 years.

5. JUSTIN VANDEWOESTYNE DIRECTOR I along with my wife, Nicole, own and operate Vandy Cattle near Estevan, SK on the family farm where I was raised. We have a growing seedstock herd of primarily Maine-Anjou cattle as well as some Simmental and Angus cattle. I am very passionate about the breed, and as we focus on the future of the breed and watch the breed develop I think we have a lot to offer the ever-evolving beef industry.

8. RON GILBERT DIRECTOR My name is Ron Gilbert . I live in Demorestville On, a little town about 2 hrs east of Toronto in Prince Edward County . I work in construction as a site supervisor building houses. I have been in the construction buisness for about 35 yrs. I grew up on a cow calf operation of about 100 head of commercial cattle with my parents and 4 siblings, 2 older sisters and 2 younger brothers. We started crossbreeding with Maine Anjou in 1975 . My parents purchased their first fullblood bull in 1979 and started breeding up to where we are today. Today my parents and I calve out around 30 cows. Our herd is about 50 percent fullblood and 50 percent red and white purebreds. We market females through our annual fall production sale and bulls through test stations primarily in Ontario and Manitoba . We also show at a few local fairs as well as a couple bigger shows with the help of other family members and friends. We enjoy the breed very much for its many great characteristics and enjoy promoting them across North America. I am currently serving my second term as a director on the CMAA board as well as being Vice president on the OMAA board .

6. MYLES HANSEN DIRECTOR Myles has been a Director on the Canadian MaineAnjou Association board for 9 years, being involved in various committees during that time. He was the Chairman of the 2020 Maine-Anjou Congress Committee. He has raised Maine-Anjou and MaineAnjou cross cattle all his life. Along with his wife and children they operate Hansen Livestock near Weldon, SK, bordering the Fort a la Corne Forestry near the Saskatchewan River. They breed all facets of Maine-Anjou – Purebred, Fullblood, and Percentage, along with commercial cattle. Being a CMAA board member has allowed Myles to meet many other Maine-Anjou breeders across the country and help to promote the breed and Association and all it can offer. In addition to his role with the CMAA, he is also the President of the Saskatchewan Maine-Anjou Association, as well as a long time 4-H club leader.

7. DAVE PERRY DIRECTOR Hello, I am Dave Perry from Harrowsmith, Ont. We farm just north of Kingston [ where the ST. Lawrence River meets Lake Ontario ]. I have been breeding Maine Anjou beef cattle since 1973. Our cattle are either retained and or sold for breeding stock or are direct marketed to consumers through our own local food store. We exhibit our black maine Anjou breeding stock at several fairs throughout Ontario and did show 2 heifers at Agribition 2021. Our family take part in several community events to promote the consumption of locally grown food. We have just recently received an award for The Ontario Farm Family of The Year Award. [ group photo was previously forwarded to you ]. My Maine interest with the CMAA board is to promote Maine Anjou genetics were ever possible and to keep the momentum that we have

9. PATRICK JOHNSON DIRECTOR I am the director from Manitoba, I farm with my wife and son and his wife in southwestern Manitoba we have a mixed farm growing grain and calve 130 cows. I grew up showing cattle belonging to 4h and junior Hereford program. We got into Maine Anjou in 1990s looking to ad performance and style. Our son and daughter showed maines in 4h local fairs and Brandon AGEX. I look forward to representing Manitoba on the board.

2022 junior scholarship WINNERS Essay Scholarship Winner Kylie Berner I’m Kylie Berner a second-year student at the University of Saskatchewan working towards a Bachelor Degree in Crop Science. I grew up on a progressive commercial cow-calf ranch near Verwood, SK. From a young age I have been actively involved in its operation, while building my own Maine Anjou influenced cattle herd.

My passion for agriculture and the livestock industry influences all aspects of my life including many of my extracurricular activities.

I am a member of the U of S Beef Team, I have been an active 4-H Beef Club member for 14 years, and am on the Saskatchewan Maine Anjou Association board of directors. I have raised and shown Maine Anjou and Maine Anjou influenced cattle for the past 14 years. I would like to thank the Canadian Maine Anjou Association for supporting Maine Anjou juniors on our future endeavors.

Video Reel Schorlarship Winner Riley Pashulka Riley Pashulka is from Derwent Alberta where he farms with his family Ken, Josie, Tyson and Taylor Pashulka of Rusylvia Cattle Co. Riley has shown Cattle since he was 8 years old and has his own herd of Angus, Simmental and Maine Anjou Cattle. Showing cattle has always been a passion of Rileys and he’s enjoyed a great junior career showing heifers and steers across western Canada in junior, jackpot and breed shows. He’s passionate about all aspects feeding, training and showing animals to their full potential. Riley also has an interesting in breeding cattle and has been AI cattle for 5 years with great results. He’s enjoyed participating in judging competitions across western Canada, Casper Wyoming and National Western Stock Show in Denver.

JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT

EMILY YAREMKO Young Maine-Anjou breeder promotes the breed in and out of the show ring

HOW IS YOUR FAMILY INVOLVED IN AGRICULTURE AND THE MAINE-ANJOU BREED? Our family has a mixed grain, cattle, and sheep operation at St. Paul, AB. We have a large commercial cattle operation and have been using AI genetics for many years. When us kids started 4-H and showing cattle we decided that we wanted to have our own herds and between the 4 of us now we have built substantial purebred Angus, Simmental, and Maine-Anjou herds. I have been working really hard on showing my Maine-Anjou’s at as many junior shows as I can to get the breed promoted and back in the public eye. Whenever someone says to me “I really like your heifer,” I make a point to reply back with “Thanks, she’s a Maine-Anjou” and most of them are surprised and say “Oh wow, she’s a Maine” including the judges. I believe that it is key to the future of the breed having good breeding stock being promoted and out in the public.

WHAT MAINE-ANJOU ANIMAL HAS HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT IN YOUR HERD AND YOUR LIFE? I have always admired the Maine-Anjou breed and watching local juniors showing them and their success. I love all my cows and have some that I am really excited about but Glamour is the one that started my Maine-Anjou herd. In 2019 I got the opportunity to buy my first Maine-Anjou in an online sale, Miss Rusylvia 71G (Glamour Girl). I remember that sale very clearly I was 13 years old and she was going for more than what money I had.

Mom hit the bid button again and I was literally crying because she had spent all my money. Mom knew Glamour Girl was going to be special and mom & dad helped me finance her until I sold my next years 4-H steer. Her first flush calves are on the ground and I am pretty excited about them and what I have in recip cows for next year.

“I LOVE ALL MY COWS AND HAVE SOME THAT I AM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT BUT GLAMOUR IS THE ONE THAT STARTED MY MAINE-ANJOU HERD.” WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE MAINE-ANJOU BREED? I love the temperament of my Maine-Anjou. They are so sweet and of course I love their big booties.

The amount of hip and thickness makes them really great for crossing with maternal breeds for amazing replacement heifers and breeding them terminal gets you the extra weight for selling market calves. And I’m not going to lie they have done extremely well in the show ring for me too which is a bonus.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE OF THE MAINE-ANJOU BREED AND THE AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY? I plan to continue building my herd and genetics to produce cattle that are easy keeping, sound, and functional and showing off what the breed is capable of. I plan to keep showing my cattle and promoting the breed. The future is in the youth and I can already see that this is making an impact and know of families that have just bought Maine’s to start exhibiting this year for the first time. I am very excited to have enough purebred Maine’s to offer some fantastic females and bulls for sale this year.

I would like to see more breeders working together and have an active Alberta Maine Assc start up again and start some multi producer production sales and become a junior board member if there is opportunity on either the Alberta or Canadian Associations. Next fall I plan to go to postsecondary school and I am interested in becoming an embryo tech.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST GOAL? I’d like to see more commercial cattlemen recognizing the value of the Maine-Anjou breed and I hope to help overcome some stereotypes and myths about the breed to help grow the Maine-Anjou breed again. Hopefully in the next couple years I will be able to do some pen shows to promote the breed that way too. Sometimes I feel like the Maine-Anjou are the underdogs and are overlooked so I would ultimately like to see one win a Supreme show. I know there are some really astute breeders out there with stock that deserve a place in that ring, we just need to start making the breed more visible again in Canada to help it regain momentum.

We became Sullivan Supply Dealers in the fall of 2016, we are very grateful for friends Mary Kate Robertson and Alvin Pawlitza who had a conversation with the USA Stock Show University Director at that time, Taylor. Taylor had expressed that Sullivans was in need of a traveling dealer in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and MaryKate stated that she knew the perfect couple for the job. This opportunity came at the perfect time, as Suzanne was looking to come off the road as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Elanco Animal Health, and to focus on our growing family and building a legacy of our own.

HOW HAS FLAT-TOP CATTLE CO. EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

WHAT SHOWS DOES FLAT-TOP CATTLE CO. ATTEND?

The first few years we operated the business out of a stock trailer, we would load the stock trailer, attend a show, and then come home and unload the trailer to use it to haul cows the next day. After several years of loading and unloading the trailer, it came apparent that it was time that the Show Supply Business needed a home of its own. After months of searching, we found the perfect trailer and Suzanne used her carpentry skills to build shelving and drawers, to create a functional work space for our needs.

Olds Fall Classic will be the next stop, followed by a booth space at Canadian Western Agribition.

Look for the Flat-Top Cattle Co. booth at CWA in the Canada Centre Exhibit Mall. Following that the supply trailer takes a break for the winter as Canadian Shows wind down for the season. Once spring hits we gear up for the Spring Shows, where we are back on the road nearly every weekend including shows like the Cody Sibbald Legacy Classic and Olds Spring Classic.

Passionate young breeder works hard to establish his elite herd of fullblood Maine-Anjou genetics.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE MAINE-ANJOU BREED? Although the Maine Anjou breed has never been a part of the 116 year old Knoll family farm until the purchase of 2 Maine females in 2018, cattle have always walked the hill sides here in the Red Fox Creek where Red Fox Maines calls home.

Selling registered breeding stock and having my own bull sale was always something I wanted to do, but was never sure on a breed of cattle until I discovered the fullblood Maines. In 2016 while custom hauling cattle is when I first had the opportunity to deal with these big dark red and white cattle. A local cattlemen had a number of red and white females which he bred Charolais and the big tan calves were the best calves I have ever seen. It was at that moment I knew my next herd bull would be a red and white Maine to use on the predominately char cross commercial cow herd I was running. After searching and attending Agribition only to realize there is not many fullblood Maine breeders around is when I realized there is a need for a young motivated cattlemen to get involved with this breed. While at Agribtion in 2018 is when I first met Gary Graham of Manitou Maine Anjou and first laid eyes on Manitou’s Echo and glad I did as Gary handed me a sale catalogue for his upcoming fall production sale. That December I made the 7 hour drive to Marsden, SK with big plans on filling the trailer with red and white Maine’s only to

come home with a bred cow and heifer calf. Over the next year these 2 females and the male born calf to the bred really made me fall in love with the breed. The size, colour, temperament and udder from these 3 animals were just something I wanted to be apart of. The fall of 2019 after seeing Manitou Echo once again at Agribtion and knowing he was being offered in the Manitou Maine Anjou fall sale, I once again made the trip to Marsden, SK only difference was this time I took the semi and the big trailer. I came home with 26 red and white Maine Anjou females and 1 bull.

I’ve been competitively buying fullblood Maine cattle since with the purchase of 15 animals from 3 different herd dispersals in 2022 alone.

Registered animals under the Red Fox name is approaching the 100 head mark now with plans on growing and replacing the commercial cattle with more fullblood Maines.

WHICH TRAIT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN YOUR COWHERD? The Maine Anjou Breed has many desirable traits that I value. Start with the feet, good solid foot to support the Maine frame. Heavily boned. Milk and udder, milking ability to grow big thick calves and good suspended udders that don’t break down at 5 years of age. Docility, it’s a hard enough lifestyle why do it with cows that want to kill you, Maine’s are extremely docile.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AS A MAINE-ANJOU BREEDER? The response to this question may seem a little silly, but with only being involved with the Maine Anjou breed for 6 years and jumping into the fullblood side of things where most of the fullblood breeders have been breeding and making names for themselves for 10 times longer than I have, its hard to stand out and make waves. That being said there are a couple accomplishments that may not seem like much to the established breeder but to my family and I are very proud moments. First was being asked to be apart of the Candiac Choice Bull Sale were 5 bulls with the Red Fox prefix sold successfully.

Second is attending 2022 Agribiton with my heifer calf Red Fox Kiwi who held her own with me not knowing a single thing about showing cattle (big thanks to Hanna Kemp). Third would be selling breeding bulls to 2 Maine Anjou breeders in the 2023 bull sale thank you Mel’s Maines & TMP Cattle Company.

WHAT ANIMAL HAS HAD THE LARGEST IMPACT ON YOUR PROGRAM? Again being so new to the breed and still piecing together the puzzle and acquiring animals from multiple breeders across Canada to see what I can breed, its hard to put a finger on one specific animal. In another 5 years I’m sure this will be a very simple question to answer. As of now Manitou’s Echo would definitely be the animal with the biggest impact as he’s given me a very nice group of females and the Red Fox Jack bull that I am extremely proud of and plan to build off of him. Red Fox Jack has his first calf crop on the ground and they are very consistent in BW, colour and style.

WHICH DIRECTION DO YOU SEE YOUR PROGRAM GOING IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS? I feel I started in with the Fullbloods at just the right time with many long time breeders dispersing in 2022 and very few new breeders

getting into the fullbloods. For the foreseeable future I will continue with the Full Bloods and keep growing the Red Fox herd to keep these traditional Maines alive. It will be a difficult task to keep up and continue doing what these long time breeders have done but I’m up for the challenge. At some point I would like to have a fall production sale but not sure how soon that can take place as I’m still building and not ready to part with many females. The live bull sales will stay and would like to increase the number of bulls on offer as demand grows. The biggest next step will be looking into flushing some females.

he arrival of fall always brings a flurry of activity at the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) and renewed energy to advance the key priorities of importance to cattle producers. This year is no different and we have important work that needs to continue on many important policy fronts.

With the return of Parliament in mid-September,our tradition of helping kick off the Fall Parliamentary session with our annual Barbecue on the Hill continued. I enjoy attending this event each year, as it gives our team an opportunity to connect with Members of Parliament (MPs), Senators, and their staff in an informal setting. There were many great conversations over delicious Canadian beef brisket supporting farming and ranching practices that meet Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) standards.

A special thank you goes out to Senator Rob Black for co-hosting the event as well as our partners, Propane Canada and InterCity Packers for helping make the barbecue a big success!

In preparation for on our upcoming involvement in international policy discussions on climate change and biodiversity, we hosted a virtual climate adaptation and sustainable livestock systems event. Held in partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), we shared our

36 MAINE MAIL FALL ISSUE 2023

Nathan Phinney priorities for this year’s United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP28). The event brought together key government, industry, academia, conservation partners, and cattle producers to explore the positive connections between sustainable livestock systems, climate change, and biodiversity.

We were pleased by the positive discussions that took place through the sessions and how we were able to showcase the strong collaborative efforts underway in Canada to harness the true value of working landscapes and their environmental benefits. Our team looks forward to sharing our positive story and building on these conversations at COP28 in Dubai later this fall.

Over the next four months, CCA’s engagement with Parliamentarians will focus on priorities including trade, sustainability, and our 2024 federal budget asks.

Trade remains a hot policy area for us. We continue to monitor developments on Bill C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management) that moved to the Senate before Parliament recessed for the summer. This bill seeks to take supply management off the table during future trade negotiations. We continue to emphasize the ramifications this bill could have on our economy and cattle producers with Senators and will carry this message forward in our advocacy work through the fall session.

CCA has ramped up advocacy efforts on trade with the United Kingdom (UK). The main sticking point is that the UK does not recognize our world-class food safety system. The CCA board

and staff will continue to reiterate with elected officials how Canadian beef is disadvantaged in the interim trade agreement with the UK. Nontariff trade barriers continue to shut Canada out of this market, while UK has unfettered access to the Canadian market. We are pushing for the Government of Canada to delay the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) until our barriers in the UK market can be addressed.

As I mentioned in my last column, grassroots producers and industry partners can easily support our advocacy efforts on equitable trade with the UK by supporting the Say No to a Bad Deal campaign. We are pleased with the support that we’ve received so far from producers and industry stakeholders – thank you! If you haven’t done so already, please visit www.saynotoabaddeal.ca to send an email to your MP. Lastly, our advocacy efforts this fall will also highlight our four key recommendations for the upcoming 2024 Federal Budget.

We are asking for the Government of Canada to partner and invest in the Grassland Conservation Initiative (GCI), led by CCA with support from DUC and the NCC. This initiative works to find voluntary solutions to help conserve our prairie native grasslands and aims to be another incentive-based tool in the toolkit for producers.

We are also seeking an amendment to the Livestock Tax Deferral (LTD) provision in the Income Tax Act to give producers the ability to self-elect rather than rely on a geographic

determination. This change would enable access for producers who fall outside of the boundary lines and those who are impacted by consecutive years of adverse weather under the current provision.

We are also advocating for the interest-free portion of the Advanced Payments Program (APP) to remain at the current level of $350,000.

A return to $100,000 at the end of this federal budget cycle does not accurately reflect the profound inflation of farm input costs.

Lastly, CCA recommends that the Government of Canada take a science-based approach and align our specified risk material (SRM) regulations with those in the United States (U.S.).

Differences in our SRM regulations have reduced the competitiveness of our industry by adding approximately C$31 million in additional costs.

This change would help us get more Canadian beef to international markets. It would also help our processors (existing and potential) to compete internationally.

Before signing off, I wanted to quickly mention that at the time of writing this column, the AgriRecovery response hasn’t been announced.

We are monitoring the situation and pushing for support to be rolled out immediately.

he Maine breed had a strong showing throughout Alberta this summer with a number of juniors excelling with their Maine Genetics at various junior and jackpot shows. Congratulations!

The AMAA is sponsoring the Maine Anjou show at Farmfair international Nov 7-11 with the Maine show having great numbers entered for the Nov.8 show at 9am. Farmfair is gearing up for 2024 for its 50 th Anniversary and National Breed Shows.

There will also be Maine Breeders attending Olds Fall Classic, Lloydminster Stockade Round Up and Canadian Western Agribition this fall.

ntario Maine-anjou breeders have had a busy summer showing cattle at several fairs. We had a very good group of cattle at our Provincial show in Lindsay Ontario.

We hosted the CMAA Annual Meeting this past August in Kingston, Ontario. It seemed that everyone involved had a great time with a combination of great people, great food and beverages and capped off with a dinner cruise on the St. Lawrence River.

Several of us are busy planning our OMAA Annual Select Sale at Hoards Station on Saturday Dec 2nd, 2023 at 1PM, Also available on DLMS. This sale is in conjunction with the

annual Gilcroft Farms Production Sale There will be a great selection of Maine-Anjou cattle, plan to check it out.

Challenging Collaboration Sandy Russell

H

istorically, the seedstock sector has struggled with unified representation within the beef industry for many reasons, one of which is the considerable amount of diversity that exists within beef cattle genetics. I have often said that our diversity is our biggest challenge but is also our biggest opportunity. The absence of unified representation at times though has often resulted in the important role that cattle breeders or ‘genetic influencers’ play in beef production not being acknowledged by the entire production chain. It has also led to the seedstock sector not being engaged in some of the critical conversations and decision making that drives the industry forward.

The Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) works hard to represent the interests of our collective membership and support constructive, collaborative conversations between the diverse interests of the seedstock sector to ensure that the collective voice is heard within the entire Canadian beef industry. Whether it is through representation at industry events, active engagement and participation with other national industry organizations or through the Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN), our increased efforts to engage in collaborative efforts has clearly started to capture the attention of some within our industry as more and more organizations are reaching out to connect or engage in advancing the awareness of the value of genetics in beef cattle production and sustainability. Increasingly, CBBC is being invited to participate in critical conversations for our industry and that collective representation for the seedstock sector is absolutely essential as the beef industry faces some of our biggest challenges including declining cow herd numbers, skyrocketing costs and validating sustainable production methods.

Whether it is the individual sectors (seedstock, cow/ calf, feeder, packer, retailer) or individual breeds, tackling these issues independently is often not as effective and can even be detrimental to consistent communication and achieving solutions. We are more powerful when we work collaboratively.

Advancing the utilization of genetic data and innovative technologies within the beef industry is no different. It is something that has been pursued for a very long time by many with minimal success. I believe the only way to accomplish this very difficult goal is collaboratively. That being said, collaboration is not easy.

It has been known for some time that the beef industry has lagged other livestock sectors in adopting innovative genetic tools and capturing the full value potential of genetic selection. And while we don’t want to become pork or chicken we do want to fully utilize all the tools that we have to remain competitive and capture value for breeders, producers and the entire beef production chain. It is for this reason that CBIN is such an important initiative for the Canadian beef industry.

While I know, and we work hard to promote, the fact that Canadian beef producers offer some of the highest quality beef cattle genetics in the world, other countries are investing and driving genetic improvements in beef cattle at an aggressive pace and are making considerable gains. If we are too busy competing amongst ourselves or become complacent in driving tangible investments in genetic improvement, we will be surpassed by others. Our competition should not be others within the Canadian beef

industry… our competition is other countries and other protein options.

While some collective efforts across our industry with various partners are underway, we know we have a long way to go. Collaboration is not easy and it does take compromise and cooperation but there is no doubt that we will go much farther as a seedstock sector if we can focus on healthy competition while also collectively driving the ultimate goal of providing top quality genetics to beef producers both domestically and internationally.

One example of this important collaboration was this past July when CBBC hosted the Beef Improvement Federation’s Symposium in Calgary. Leading experts in beef cattle genetics and guests from around the world gathered in Calgary to discuss advancements in genetics while seeing the quality of Canada’s diverse beef industry. CBBC will continue to work hard to support collaborative opportunities like this for all our members.

The idea of capturing value from data driven genetic selection decisions is no doubt advancing within the industry as many are trying to find the key to unlock this substantial opportunity.

We can each choose to work independently and duplicate investments and resources in the ongoing pursuit of this goal or we can work collaboratively to leverage our collective investments and resources. I for one believe that collaboration is the key to cracking this incredibly difficult issue and that breeders and producers should be in the driver’s seat in order to fully reap the benefits.

There is no doubt that beef production will continue to evolve and data is the currency that can truly inform decisions to increase value in our production chain. I have heard it said that determining how best to capture that value from genetics can be done by us, can be done with us or will be done for us. I believe it should be done by us collaboratively and CBBC will continue to

memorial scholarship BAXTER BLAIR

In 2016, after the sudden loss of Gary Smith, the Smith family began the Gary D. Smith Memorial Scholarship at the Summer Synergy Junior Show. Gary Smith was a founding member of Poplar Haven Farms, a well-known purebred Maine-Anjou operation, as well as a livestock genetics exporter. Gary operated, with his family, NuHaven Cattle Co at Pine Lake, AB raising Maine Anjou and club calf cattle.

The Gary D Smith Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the senior contestant with the highest combined scores of the Beef confirmation judging and Marketing competitions.

The 2023 scholarship was awarded to Baxter Blair of McLean, Sk. Baxter is well known on the show circuit with his own operation, Double B Angus. Currently Baxter is a member of the Oklahoma State University Livestock Judging team.

Gary’s daughter Kelly and granddaughter Aubrey were very pleased to award Baxter with his $1000 scholarship during the banquet at Summer Synergy. The Smith family enjoy awarding the scholarship to an individual that truly represents the future of industry.
