presidents report
Welcome to spring 2024
Maine Mail, it’s a great honor to have become the CMAA president and what an exciting time to be a Maine enthusiast and cattle producer. Becoming the CMAA president is a task I will not take lightly having been on the board since 2017 and a Maine Anjou breeder since 1981. We as an association need to thank Stu Byman for his guidance over the last several years.
The fall of 2023 saw record calf sale prices and now we see those prices once again climbing and that should make for an exciting bull sale season that is really gearing up this week. Theres never been a better time to go select your next herd sire and this year there are more Maine Genetics Bull sales then ever before in this decade. We thank the progressive breeders that have supported this magazine with their advertising and encourage you to support the magazine.
Josie Pashulka
2024 is already shaping up to being a great year with the breed-it seems every week new memberships are being applied for and new juniors are interested in Maine Anjou genetics. This past fall show season saw an increase in Maine Anjou cattle in the barns, some terrific sales and a big thank you goes out to those working to promote Maine genetics at shows and sales.
This spring as you progress through your calving season, possibly pursue a new Maine Bull purchase look to support the CMAA breeders we have across the country. The fall of 2024 will have an exciting line up of shows and sales once again, one of the highlights will be the 50 th Anniversary of Farmfair International and the hosting of the National Maine Anjou Show. Consider venturing out this summer to see and visit with other CMAA breeders.
Wishing you much success with calving and bull sales.
Sincerely,
Josie Pashulka

herd book & data services report
This past year has been a year of high prices across the cattle markets which we hope to see continue into 2024 for our producers. Manie genetics are in demand and the Maine influence animals are exceling at auction marts and feedlots across Canada and the US.
On behalf of the board of directors, I am happy to announce there was once again an incentive raffle for those who have renewed their memberships by February 14th. All paid memberships will be entered in the draw which will take place on February 20th for a sale credit to the lucky winner to be applied for the purchase of an animal from any Active Canadian Member. Annual memberships will be entered for the chance to win $1000 and Junior Members the chance at $500 in sale credits. Good luck to all!
This is another reminder about the potential of nonqualified semen for Canada being used. All semen that is brought into Canada requires a CFIA permit, and all semen needs to be CSS-qualified to be imported into Canada. We will be working together amongst breed associations and CFIA to closely monitor the use of foreign genetics as they pertain to qualified use in Canada, and we will be requesting CSS semen codes on those animals in question. If CSS semen codes cannot be provided, the CMAA will be reaching out to CFIA for confirmation going forward. Please be diligent and ensure all the necessary information is included to avoid any processing delays.
We remind our members that it is crucial to test any Bulls or Donor Dams with carriers or TH or PHA on their
Ciara Mattheis
pedigree to complete registrations and ensure eligibility of future offspring. TH/PHA tests are $40 and can be ordered through the association at the same time as SNP parentage and require no additional hair to be pulled on the animal.
Effective January 1, 2024, the board has put in place the following motion.
“All bull calves beginning in 2024 will get a conditional black and white certificate noting that TH/ PHA testing is incomplete until which time testing is completed (unless animal is confirmed Free by pedigree). This conditional registration is not transferable or eligible for breeding by natural or AI service until test results are back and Free. If the animal tests positive, and registration is pursued, all progeny of both sexes must be tested Free to be registered.”
The board made this decision to align more closely with the recommendations of AMAA and based on feedback received from our membership. We hope this will assist in alleviating some of the shortfalls of implementing this program going forward.
We should be proud where our Maine Anjou animals stand in the industry and the quality of animals our association represents whether it be in the show ring, pasture, or feed yard. We need to continue that enthusiasm moving forward and continue encouraging young breeders to take on a Maine or Maine influence project. We look forward to another great year of our Mane-Anjou breeders producing quality seedstock for the cattle industry!
Best regards,
Ciara Matthies Director of Herdbook and Data Services

Miss Ronsko 60 K is our Junior High Point Champion Female. Emily won or placed in 15 shows with her this past year. Congratulations to Emily on your incredible year.
Our reserve High point show female is a Maintainer Heifer also having had a great year placing at over 12 shows- KMS Iconic Margie 802F 40K owned by Taylor Reid. Taylor purchased this heifer from Katie SongerLucky Springs Farms.
Josie Pashulka
Congratulations girls and we have Honourable mentions to Taylor Reid with Reids Aurora 166J who’s big win was Supreme Commercial Female at Summer Synergy, Emily Yaremko with Carps Kraze as well as Aubrey Fraser and Ethan Yaremko. We will be doing the High Point Award again next year so best wishes to everyone.

WINNERS
TWO JUNIOR MAINE ANJOU BREEDERS WIN CANADIAN WESTERN AGRIBITION SCHOLARSHIPS
Maine Anjou junior breeders, Adrian Byman and Kylie Berner both received a Canadian Western Agribition scholarship in 2023. CWA scholarships are a well-known achievement that any youth is honoured to say they’ve been awarded. The scholarships are given out to youth that have a passionate background in agriculture and have previously partaken in Agribition. In total, four scholarships are given out each year and as a breed, we should be extremely proud that two were awarded to these up and coming Maine Anjou breeders. Adrian Byman, from Wadena, SK, received the Canadian Western Agribition Scholarship, and Kylie Berner, from Verwood, SK, received the Barry Andrew Family Award.
These young females are big upcoming producers in this business, both in agriculture programs at the University of Saskatchewan and a drive in the livestock industry. Adrian and Kylie are active Canadian Maine-Anjou Junior members, breeders, and enthusiasts. Both have shown in the CWA Maine show and proudly represent the Maine breed at many youth shows year round. Not only are they a part of the CJMAA, Kylie is also board director on the Saskatchewan Maine Anjou Association.
Congratulations ladies on your achievements!

BREEDER SPOTLIGHT
Daines Cattle & O’Niell Livetsock
Long time Maine-Anjou breeders growing thier numbers of a breed they feel offers a lot to the commercial industry
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE MAINE-ANJOU BREED?
Our family purchased our first Maines in 1982. Originally, we operated under the name Daines Maines. The past few years, we have been starting to grow our Maine program again. They are popular with our commercial customers. They are a breed with a lot to offer the industry.
WHICH TRAIT DO YOU VALUE MOST IN YOUR COWHERD?
I value a functional producer, a cow that can thrive under real ranch conditions and that produces in a way that makes dollars and cents.
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AS A MAINEANJOU BREEDER?
We are just getting our Maine program back rolling, but I am proud of what my dad, Grant, and Uncle Michael accomplished while they raised them. I am digging in the bottom of the semen tank and using semen from their proven herd sires. It is always fun to listen to their stories from back in the day, lots to learn from them that’s for sure.
“THE PAST FEW YEARS, WE HAVE BEEN STARTING TO GROW OUR MAINE PROGRAM AGAIN. THEY ARE POPULAR WITH OUR COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS. THEY ARE A BREED WITH A LOT TO OFFER THE INDUSTRY.”
WHAT ANIMAL HAS HAD THE LARGEST IMPACT ON YOUR PROGRAM?
We are really excited about the NAGE Kodiak calves. Our first calf crop out of him is just hitting the ground, but they are really cool made and impressive. The RDRL First Time Solution 280G bull has done a nice job for us too. He is working really good in our crossbred program and his calves have awesome vigor. Going back, there is no denying the impact that Smithbuilt, Caesar, Copenhagen and Energizer had – those bulls and the way they worked are a big reason why we are wanting to raise more.
WHICH DIRECTION DO YOU SEE YOUR PROGRAM GOING IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
We are planning on continuing to grow this Maine deal. We will continue to raise the Charolais and Simmentals, as well as a few Angus. That’s one of the things that we love about the Maines, they cross so well with all three of those breeds.

CANADA-US TRADE
Our strong advocacy efforts continue with the beef industry’s largest trading partner – the US. CCA was in Washington, DC with Canada’s ag minister, Honourable Lawrence MacAulay in January to meet with key industry, agri-food stakeholders and US officials with goals of strengthening and advancing shared US-Canada priorities. Key topics included ways to reduce trade barriers and the important integrated nature of our beef supply chains. For example, proposed changes in voluntary “Product of USA” labelling regulations for meat and livestock have the potential to restrict trade and disrupt supply chains and both countries need to continue to work collaboratively.
CANADA-UK TRADE
CCA has been closely monitoring the progress of trade negotiations between Canada and the United Kingdom (UK) – particularly when it comes to the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). In late January, trade talks broke down between the UK and Canada. While this was disappointing, CCA’s stance is we aren’t saying no to trade. We are saying no to a bad deal for Canadian beef producers. The Canadian beef industry will continue to oppose the accession of the UK to the Comprehensive and Progressive Transpacific Partnership (CPTPP) until the fundamental
Nathan Phinney
obstacles to export Canadian beef to the UK are fully addressed. Unfortunately, the UK has shown no indication that it is prepared to fully accept Canada’s food safety system which is widely recognized as one of the finest in the world. CCA, on behalf of beef producers, is encouraging the Government of Canada to re-examine the UK’s current beef access to Canada in both the Trade Continuity Agreement (TCA) and the CPTPP to ensure fairness and equitable access. It’s not fair to make only one side play by the regulations and we will stand up for our rights to defend a fair deal for producers.
SUSTAINABILITY PROGRESS
In 2020/21, the Canadian Beef Advisors set a goal to reduce primary production GHG emissions intensity by 33 per cent by 2030, among a suite of other goals to support research, innovation, and technology adoption to support both the environmental and economical sustainability of the sector.
We were pleased to see the positive results of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef’s (CRSB) National Beef Sustainability Assessment (NBSA), which will help our advocacy and communications efforts to support the Canadian beef industry. Key environmental Improvements include a 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to produce 1 kg of beef (boneless and consumed) since 2014. This progress is directly attributed to our producers who work hard to sustainably produce the world’s best beef by increasing production efficiencies, reducing the time needed to produce an individual animal, and ultimately reducing the number of resources to produce the same amount of beef.
MAINE MAIL 20
SPRING ISSUE 2024
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) approval of 3-Nitrooxypropanol (3NOP) as a new livestock feed ingredient aimed at reducing methane emissions from cattle was welcome news for the industry.
Canadian farmers and ranchers are long-time partners with the environment and manage their land and animals to ensure sustainable and viable operations for the long-term. The approval of 3NOP offers a tremendous opportunity for our industry, particularly within the feedlot sector, to further advance our efforts to reduce methane emissions. This approval algins with the beef industry’s commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship while meeting the need for innovative and practical tools to help reduce GHG emissions in the beef cattle sector.
While the progress mentioned is notable, we still have many issues looming. There are still some things we do not have control over – like the weather – but our producers continue to look for ways to be more efficient and to deliver the highest quality of beef for our domestic and international markets. CCA will be amping up its efforts to share how hard producers across the country are working to benefit our industry’s reputation and competitiveness.

ow that 2023 is in the books and 2024 is upon us we can look back on the positivity surrounding Maine-Anjou cattle in 2023 and look to build on that in 2024. Agribition once again saw a very strong MaineAnjou show with a lot of great quality cattle in the barn, hats off to all the exhibitors for showcasing your herds so well and making the week a great one! The Maines on the Plains sale was a highlight of Agribition week once again, so many top-quality animals and frozen genetics were consigned and the interest and support of the sale was second to none. Thank you so much to all the consignors for putting such a high-quality group together and to all the bidders and buyers, we thank you for supporting our Maine-Anjou breeders and helping to promote the breed.
The annual Maine Attraction Heifer Calf Jackpot was a wonderful showcase of the diversity that our breed has to offer. The best percentage, purebred and fullblood heifer calves were on display for our judging panel to sort through. Seeing the different ways that Maine-Anjou cattle are being utilized in so many different operations is exciting, and to be able to show others just how many options the breed can offer is

just one of many reasons why the Maine Attraction jackpot is a must see.
We are once again looking forward to seeing another strong group of junior members exhibiting MaineAnjou animals at their 4-H and junior shows across the province this spring and summer, remember to reach out to our board if you exhibit a champion or reserve champion at your regional 4-H show as we have prizes for those accomplishments (saskmaineanjou@yahoo. com).
Our board would like to welcome Jordan Retzlaff on as a director with the SMAA, we are excited to have him be a part of the board and work with him as we try to keep the breed’s momentum going. We would like to thank Gary Graham for his years of dedication to the SMAA board and the Maine-Anou breed. The Canadian Maine Anjou Association AGM is going to be hosted in Saskatchewan this summer so be sure to stay tuned for updates and more information about that once it is available.

Gilcroft Farms also have bulls on test in Manitoba which are also entered in the sale. There have been 2 new full blood bulls introduced to Ontario this spring. Gilcroft purchased a mature bull from Alberta and Bobbie Smith bought a yearling out of Saskatchewan. The CMAA has a sit down meeting in Calgary for the board of directors on April 24th. Dave and Kim Perry plan to fly to Alberta for the meeting and then spend a week visiting breeders and their daughter Kaitlyn who lives in
Grand Prairie. Ron Gilbert is driving his truck and trailer out to the meeting, he will probably make a couple of quick stops at breeders and head back to Ontario by Sunday night. ( he doesn’t sit idle very long on his road trips ) We are starting to plan our summer show circuit and look forward to breeders bringing a good representation of our great breed. We would like to have a summer picnic which would allow breeders some leisure time to socialize and view some Maine breeding stock. CANADIAN BEEF BREEDS COUNCIL
Driving Change in an Industry Founded on Tradition
United we stand, divided we fall” is a phrase that is often used to inspire collaborative efforts and one that is an important reminder for Canadian beef producers to remember. With ever tightening budgets and limited resources, organizations look to every way possible to eliminate costs and investment in collaborative and innovative projects are often hard to maintain. Is there really value in working together? Do we really need a unified organization to represent the seedstock sector? As we all look to advance the value of genetic data in the ongoing effort to produce sustainable and profitable beef, now more than ever the investment in membership in unified representation to advance beef cattle genetics is critical.
At CBBC, we believe our diversity is our biggest advantage in the beef cattle industry but it is also our biggest challenge. If we lose our diversity, we lose our advantage. Within our member organizations there are many similarities and many differences. The key to maintaining strong members and driving value is to find efficiencies in managing those things that are similar amongst us all so that we can continue to thrive in our uniqueness. Operating in isolation and trying to independently manage our challenges will only result in fewer and fewer successful organizations within the sector.
Sandy Russell
The Canadian Beef Breeds Council’s (CBBC) mandate continues to be to:
• support the Canadian seedstock sector by developing partnerships that advance genetic improvement, research extension services, information dissemination and our role in Canada’s National Beef Strategy;
• promote Canadian beef cattle genetics both domestically and internationally by identifying market opportunities and facilitating market development; and
• advocate on behalf of the Canadian seedstock sector for effective policy, meaningful market access and enhanced competitiveness.
All of which are critically important for all our members, regardless of size and all of which require time and money to advance. When working collaboratively our efforts and resources go much further and all voices at the table are represented.
CBBC held another extremely successful Annual General Meeting in Regina, Saskatchewan during Canadian Western Agribition with over fifty members and industry stakeholders in attendance. During the meeting the CBBC membership elected new Directors Eddie Marsman, current President of the Canadian Gelbvieh Association and Andy Schuepbach, a current Director of the Canadian Hereford Association to the Board and re-elected for another term Kevin Blair, Marlin Leblanc, Rod McLeod, Scott Severtson and Shawn Wilson. They join currently serving Directors Ken Friesen, Dennis Serhienko, David Sibbald and Brett Wildman to comprise the 2023/24 CBBC Board of Directors.
MAINE MAIL 24 SPRING ISSUE 2024
The awareness of the role that beef cattle genetics and CBBC’s members play in sustainable beef production has increased substantially in recent years. Throughout 2023 CBBC continued to focus on building collaborative partnerships both within the seedstock sector and across the entire beef production chain to advance our vision of being a world leader in developing profitable and sustainable beef cattle genetics. Driving these advancements is not an easy feat and has been met with challenges as we push to move the needle on collaboration and increasing the value of genetic data within the beef production system.
Change is hard within any industry and especially so in a traditionally independent industry such as beef cattle production. The disruption that the leadership and partners of CBBC have created has not always been met with a warm reception but that has not deterred the leadership from continuing to work to achieve tangible outcomes for Canadian beef cattle breeders and producers. CBBC membership and collaborative partnerships continue to increase and we will remain focused on working with those who believe in the importance of collaboration and the value of data-driven genetic advancements in beef production to capture increased value.
This year represents 30 years since the creation of the Canadian Beef Breeds Council and those past leaders responsible for the creation of CBBC clearly saw value in a collective voice representing the seedstock sector and we believe more than ever that unified representation of the seedstock sector is critical for not only the sector to thrive but the entire beef industry in Canada to thrive. As we enter our 30th year of operations we will not only be celebrating our past achievements but working with our members and partners to leverage collaborative resources to capture the substantial opportunities that we believe the future holds for Canadian beef cattle genetics both domestically and internationally. More than ever CBBC is looked to as a leader in the Canadian beef industry and we will continue to work to represent our members and partners as effectively and efficiently as possible to assist in securing a sustainable future for Canadian beef cattle breeders and producers.
